Missing toddler, Maurice Brown, Jr., found dead in dumpster/Father Charged With Murder In Death of 3-year-old
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A 3-year-old boy who disappeared Sunday from his father's Memphis home was found dead in a nearby dumpster Tuesday, MyFoxMemphis reports.
Police confirmed the body found was that of Maurice Brown Jr., who was reported missing by his father from his home a few miles away.
Maurice Brown Sr. reportedly told police he fell asleep for a few hours Sunday evening, and when he awoke his son was gone and the door was open. He claimed the child had been kidnapped.
However, a police affidavit contradicted his account. A witness told police that he saw Brown Sr. leaving his apartment with a child draped over his right shoulder and walk toward a parking lot on the north side of the apartment building between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday, according to the affidavit.
Police say they found evidence of spattered and pooled blood in the man's bathroom that was consistent with a beating. Police also found a white piece of cloth with blood on it, the affidavit said.
"Based upon the age of the missing child, and the blood evidence in the bathroom, which is consistent with blunt force trauma, the affiant has probable cause to believe that the child has sustained serious bodily injury," said the affidavit, signed by homicide detective Darren Goods.
Maurice Brown, Sr., was charged with child neglect or endangerment on Monday night. He is now in jail and could face additional charges.
The boy's mother, Latoya Kanneh, told The Commercial Appeal that she drove to Memphis from Pine Bluff, Ark., after being told by police that her son was missing. Kanneh, 23, said her son lived with her in Arkansas but was visiting his father in Memphis.

Father Charged With Murder In Death of 3-year-old
July 6, 2012
(Memphis) – Police say 3-year-old Maurice Brown, Jr. was bludgeoned to death by his own father, Maurice Brown, Sr.
He first told police his son walked out of the apartment Sunday night.
Then his story became to unravel. Police say they found blood in the bedroom, bathroom and living room of his Memphis Apartment.
The little boy’s body was then Tuesday in a dumpster, badly beaten and bruised.
The Medical Examiner says the child died from multiple hits on the head and torso.
“That’s bad how could you do that to your own son,” Tonya Harris said. Harris brought her children to pay their respects to the 3-year-old.
They dropped off stuffed animals Friday at the makeshift memorial outside the apartment where police say the boy was killed.
Many other people joined them, including Ayanna Humphrey who has followed the case closely.
“I kind of knew that it was him when they said there was blood in the bathroom,” she said.
She always suspected the father was to blame, and now she’s relieved to know he’s charged with murder.
“It’s great. Its’ good. Justice is served for the family that’s all that matters,” she said.
Getting Maurice Brown Sr. fingerprinted on murder charges was a struggle for police. They say he refused and made a fist with his hand.
There was a struggle, and they had to mace him. He is also facing a resisting arrest charge.
The funeral for Maurice Brown, Jr. will be held Saturday. R. S. Lewis Funeral Home is asking all mourners attending the wake and funeral services for Maurice Brown Jr. to wear blue and white. Maurice Brown, Jr. will be in a blue casket with white crape interior and dressed in a blue suit, white shirt, and blue tie.
The wake is Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a funeral at Progressive Baptist Church, 394 Vance Ave.
Maurice will be laid to rest in a vault at historic Elmwood Cemetery.

Did Memphis Rapper Maurice 'Yung Chip' Brown Murder His 3 Yr
published: 07/09/12
Maurice Brown, Sr, who has been accused of killing his 3 year-old son, Maurice Brown, Jr, reportedly was a rapper who went under the name of Yung Chip. Maurice Brown Sr allegedly wasn't only a rapper but also reportedly a man with anger who assaulted his son's mother back in 2010, but did he kill his son?!
Since the death of his son, Maurice Brown, Sr's past has come to hunt him as experts and the authorities try to analyze and figure if he did indeed kill Maurice Brown, Jr and what may have triggered such an act. However, with a blood trail in his apartment and a witness, things are not looking too good as of now, for the father of the 3 year old.
After changes in Maurice Senior's story in which he initially stated that he had awaken to his son gone with the door open and believing that gang members had taken his son to retaliate against him on July 1st, it was later revealed that blood had been found in his apartment which linked to an act of possible murder, at the least accidental death.
A witness pointed out to authorities that they had seen Maurice Brown, Sr (Sunday evening) with a little child draped over his shoulder believed to be that of Maurice Jr around 8:30PM that evening.
The toddler's body was later found in a dumpster in the medical district in Downtown Memphis.
Since then, Maurice Brown, Sr has been charged with murder in the perpetration of aggravated child abuse and murder in the perpetration of aggravated child neglect.
Brown, Sr is being held on a $1 million bond and is due back in front a judge on July 26th.

Boy's funeral brings tensions, police response
Monday, July 9, 2012
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Ten Memphis police cars responded as tensions mounted at the funeral of a 3-year-old boy whose father has been charged with murder.
According to The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/LBBwt0 ), hundreds of people attended the services for Maurice Brown Jr. on Saturday. The funeral was under way when a man walked to the front of Progressive Missionary Baptist Church and said the boy died because his father "wasn't being a father."
The man was restrained by friends and taken outside. The congregation followed them, and several people called 911. The man, described as a cousin of the boy's father, rushed away, declining comment.
The Rev. James Collins, who officiated at the funeral, stood on the sidewalk afterward, saying that people must remember that anger is part of the grief cycle.
"It was already a volatile situation, and based on an insensitive remark, it escalated," Collins said.
Police on Friday charged the child's father, Maurice Brown Sr., with murder in the perpetration of aggravated child abuse and murder in the perpetration of aggravated child neglect.
The boy disappeared July 1, and his father told police he awoke from a nap and the boy was gone. But police said witness accounts contradicted the man's story, and the boy's body was found in a trash bin last Tuesday.
Brown Sr. made a brief appearance in General Sessions Court in Memphis on Monday. He told a judge that he has a lawyer who is out of town. A hearing has been set for July 26.
The funeral was donated by R.S. Lewis & Sons Funeral Home. Public relations spokeswoman Patricia A. Rogers said the cost of the funeral-related services would have been about $6,000.
The boy was in an open coffin with a baseball cap on his head to conceal autopsy scars. Some wept as they passed by the coffin.
Two relatives stepped to the podium to speak during the service but had to sit down without saying anything as they were overcome by tears.
The boy's mother, Latoya Page Kanneh, said a few words.
"Only God knows the pain I feel inside," she said. "I'm going to see him one day again. I know I am."

I don't know how a parent or any adult could even think of hurting a child. There are so many childless couples that would LOVE to adopt a child to love and raise and they would not injure or murder them. What a shame!!! I hope they throw the book at him. Thank goodness that someone saw the father, or he could have easily gotten away with it.

Father accused of murdering son appears in court
Jul 09, 2012 5:29 AM PDT
MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - Maurice Brown, Sr. was escorted into court by two jailers. He seemed calm and emotionless during his video arraignment Monday.
"He was advised of the new charges, which in this case is murder in the first degree, as well as resisting official detention," said Prosecutor Jennifer Nichols.
The resisting official detention charge came when Brown fought with jailers over getting his fingerprints.
"Last week, I was asked whether there would be additional charges added and, of course, I couldn't comment on that because I didn't know. The police continued their investigation and did find, obviously, additional evidence," said Nichols.
One week ago, Brown told police his 3-year-old son went missing while he was asleep. When he woke up, he said his son was gone.
Little Maurice Brown Jr. was found dead in a dumpster two days later.
Police found blood all over the bathroom of the family's apartment. The medical examiner determined the boy died of blunt force trauma.
"The new charge of murder resulted from finding the body and getting a cause of death," said Nichols.
Maurice Brown, Sr. now sits in jail without bond. He is charged with 1st degree murder in connection with the death of his 3-year-old son.
