The man accused of murdering Lynn Jackenheimer is still on the run and family of the slain Ohio mother believe that someone is helping him stay off the radar. Friends also believe that Nate Summerfield's keen intelligence is helping him outsmart police. While the lawyers of the Jackenheimer family don't want them to discuss the details of an impending custody battle, it's curious to consider all of the elements at play. Could someone in the Summerfield family be helping Nate? This is just a question, but it would be nice to find out whether or not that thought is prominent in the minds of others. These latest updates in the case bring to attention just how volatile this entire situation really is.

It's reported that Nate Summerfield is highly intelligent with computer hacking abilities, giving him the ability to stay a few steps ahead of police. However, there aren't really any signs of this so called intelligence aside from the fact that someone who was friends with Lynn Jackenheimer says so. Not to judge a book by its cover, but he really doesn't look like he has what it takes to manipulate cellphone tower triangulation. Maybe he does, but it just seems unlikely.

What does seem likely, however, is the possibility that someone is helping him avoid capture. The type of person that would be helping Nate Summerfield could be of two particular personalities. It could be an impressionable female who is romantically linked with the man. This could be someone who is either younger than he, or of easy-to-manipulate mental stature; someone who has a low self esteem who is willing to protect someone who "acted in passion" against a "woman who deserved it." This isn't unlikely if you look at cases like the disappearance and murder of Kenia Monge, whose murderer was protected by his girlfriend Kerry Humphries. These are despicable women who deserve to be treated as accomplices regardless of their weakened emotional or mental states.

ASHLAND — An Ashland man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend during a vacation last month at the Outer Banks was caught at 9:30 a.m. today in Wadsworth.

During a press conference this morning, Ashland County Sheriff Wayne Risner said Nathan Summerfield, 27, had checked into Legacy Inn & Suites, 810 High St., under a fictitious name only yesterday.

“Today Ashland County brought Nate Summerfield to justice,” U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott said.

Summerfield’s car was found Aug. 8 in Michigan and had been there about three weeks, Elliott said.

Summerfield had not been seen in Ashland since July 8, the day he brought estranged girlfriend Lynn Jackenheimer’s two children back to Ashland after a vacation on Hatteras Island.

“Deputy U.S. Marshals and deputy sheriffs and police officers have tracked him all over this country,” Elliott said. Summerfield sightings had been reported in Columbus and West Virginia.

He said anyone believed to have been helping Summerfield will be prosecuted.

Summerfield is being held in Medina County Jail.

A murder warrant was issued for him after Jackenheimer’s body was found July 14 in a bag in a cul-de-sac on Hatteras Island, N.C. The causes of death were listed as strangulation and stab wounds.

Wanted posters of Summerfield have been put up all over Ohio, and digital billboards have displayed information about him in several states.

Ashland County Sheriff Wayne Risner today it was an exciting day and Ashland residents can start to take down some wanted posters that they’d put up with photos of Summerfield.

Risner said in his 23 years in law enforcement he has never seen an incident affect the community the way this one did. He said law enforcement worked 16 hours a day to find Summerfield.

“I’ve not seen so many people come together to give aid and comfort and support to the Johnson family and Lynn’s children as I’ve seen in the last month and a half. It’s just unbelievable how much impact this has had on our community,” Risner said. “You being here today the number of people being here today, makes a great statement on how close this has pulled us together.”

ASHLAND, Ohio — A 13-year-old girl put unimaginable emotions into words just hours after the man accused of murdering her mother was arrested.

The U.S. Marshals Office said Nate Summerfield, 27, was taken into custody in Wadsworth on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. after authorities tracked him to a motel on High Street.

Summerfield had been wanted for over a month after his estranged girlfriend, Lynn Jackenheimer, disappeared during a trip with him to North Carolina, where her body was later found.

Summerfield returned with the 3-year-old son he shared with Jackenheimer and Jackenheimer’s 13-year-old daughter, then took off.

Ciara Sheppard, Jackenheimer’s daughter, said the support that she received from the people in Ashland County has been overwhelming, and that she has stayed strong just like her mother would have wanted her to be through these tough times.

“Ever since Nate Summerfield murdered my mother I felt so sad and I’m so glad he’s gonna be found and everything and he’s now either gonna go to the electric chair or go in jail and die,” said Sheppard. “I don’t care about him, he used me to get to my mother. I really liked my mom. I have these people now, I love you mom.”

Through her grief, Sheppard also expressed appreciation.

“I want to thank everybody for helping me and mom and everything. She was a great woman like me and I’m probably gonna be her replacement. I am like her,” Sheppard told Fox8 News.

The Ashland community has shown its support for Jackenheimer’s family by making t-shirts and posters with Summerfield’s picture to help the authorities locate and capture him.

“We wont forget it and we just had these (shirts) made to get his name out there and we’ve been selling them and the profits of the shirt sales go to the family. We’ve been doing everything we can to help (the family) get justice,” said Megan Cooper of Ashland.

After a press conference held on Wednesday, Jackenheimer’s family hugged each law enforcement officer and thanked them for the work they did in capturing Summerfield.

At the time of this report, Summerfield was in the Medina County jail awaiting extradition to North Carolina where he will be tried in Jackenheimer’s murder.

Authorities said they are currently investigating if anyone helped harbor Summerfield over the past five-and-half weeks.

WADSWORTH, Ohio - Suspected killer Nate Summerfield spent about 24 hours hiding inside a Wadsworth motel room as federal marshals moved in Wednesday morning and arrested him without incident.
Summerfield had been on the run since July 8 when he dropped his children off with a family member and was since on the run.
His brother told police that Summerfield killed his ex-girlfriend, Lynn Jackenheimer, while they vacationed in North Carolina.
NewsChannel5's investigative team first reported that Summerfield was arrested by the Northern Ohio Fugitive Task Force Wednesday morning at the Legacy Inn in Wadsworth.
Investigators had searched the room and removed the sheets searching for any possible evidence linking him to the murder.
Later, we gained access to the room where Summerfield was hiding and found he was living on a diet of microwave popcorn, Jello pudding and Pop-Tarts. There were empty Mountain Dew containers in the trash.
The room was dirty -- a cigarette butt, matches and a wet bath towel were all on the floor (as if Summerfield had just showered). The sheets were pulled off the king-size bed, but that could be due to police looking for evidence.
The curtains were pulled tight, and the do-not-disturb sign was on a chair.
The hotel said Summerfield checked in at about 8 a.m. Tuesday under the name "Jay Summerfield." The cost per night was $50 and Summerfield paid cash.
A maid said she was warned to get inside a safe room nearby when U.S. Marshals arrived outside room 211.
"Then, all the SWAT teams came and told us to get in the room and stay there so we wouldn't get hurt," said Marilyn Vickers. "Then, they ran into room 211, told the guy to get on the floor and don't move."
Vickers said federal marshals had guns drawn -- but Summerfield was captured without incident.
We also learned that Summerfield changed his first name when signing the motel registry that showed him as "Jay" Summerfield instead of "Nate." He listed a home address of Polk, Ohio -- a community just north of Ashland.
A hotel check-in clerk, who did not want to be identified, said Summerfield appeared pleasant and did not seem to be nervous.
The front door of the room was not broken down and that suggests a room key was used to gain access and take Summerfield by surprise.
Authorities would not comment how they gained access to the room.

MANTEO, N.C. - Murder suspect Nate Summerfield arrived at the Dare County detention center early Saturday morning.

A Dare County sheriff’s deputy said that Summerfield “arrived safely” at about 1:30 a.m.

Summerfield, 27, is being held in connection murder of his ex-girlfriend, Lynn Jackenheimer from Ashland, who was found dead in North Carolina.

The 33-year-old mother of two went on vacation with Summerfield, her estranged boyfriend, to the Outer Banks in North Carolina over the Fourth of July weekend. Jackenheimer never returned home.

Summerfield came back with their 3-year-old son and Jackenheimer’s 13-year-old daughter, dropped them off at a family friend's house and disappeared.

On July 14, a construction worker in Frisco, N.C. found Jackenheimer's body in a bag. Experts determined she was stabbed and strangled to death, prompting a nationwide manhunt for Summerfield.

A grand jury is expected to hear the evidence against Summerfield on Sept. 10.

The Dare County Sheriff's Office said it could be a year or more before Summerfield goes on trial due a backlog of cases.

ASHLAND, Ohio - Police are looking into the possibility that murder suspect Nate Summerfield of Ashland had an accomplice.
Peter Elliot with the U.S. Marshal's Office said investigators are following up on tips and leads about a possible second person being involved in some way.
Summerfield, 27, was captured Aug. 15 at the Legacy Inn and Suites in Wadsworth after being on the run for more than a month. He's been charged with the murder of his ex-girlfriend Lynn Jackenheimer, whose body was found in North Carolina after she was reported missing.
Summerfield, Jackenheimer, their 3-year-old son and Jackenheimer's 13-year-old daughter all took a trip to the Outer Banks for the Fourth of July. On July 8, Summerfield dropped the children off with a family member and disappeared. His brother called 911, saying his brother told him he killed Jackenheimer.
On the day of his capture, NewsChannel5 Chief Investigator Ron Regan spoke to Marilyn Vickers, a member of the cleaning crew at the hotel who witnessed the arrest. She said she saw a man with a dog come out of room 211 – the same room where Summerfield was staying – and drive away in a red pickup truck. Moments later, law enforcement officials moved in on the room and arrested Summerfield.
The cleaning crew was taken into another room for safety, where they heard authorities yelling "get down, get down."
Summerfield checked in by himself the day before under the name "Jay Summerfield" of Polk, Ohio – a town north of Ashland. A check by Regan found that name corresponds with a relative of Nate Summerfield who lives in Polk and has a criminal record.
There's no confirmation about who that man may have been leaving Summerfield's room. Investigators would not comment when asked about that witness account.
Summerfield waived extradition in Medina County and was transported back to Dare County, North Carolina.
NewsChannel5 is continuing to follow this developing story. Keep checking newsnet5.com for more information.

BY NEEL KELLER | SENTINEL STAFF

The Dare County Grand Jury returned a True Bill of Indictment on Monday, Sept. 10, charging Nathan Summerfield with the first degree murder of Lynn Jackenheimer. The indictment was returned following the presentation of evidence by prosecutors in a closed hearing in Dare County Superior Court.

Summerfield, the subject of an intensive nationwide manhunt since his return to Ohio on July 8 from a vacation trip to the Outer Banks, was arrested in Wadsworth, Ohio on Aug. 15. After waiving extradition to North Carolina, he was transported to the Dare County Detention Center from Ohio by Dare County Sheriff's Office deputies.

At Summerfield's first appearance in Dare County District Court on Aug. 21, Judge Edgar Barnes confirmed that he had been informed of his rights and read the arrest warrant aloud, stating that Dare Magistrate M.P. Duprey had found probable cause to believe that on or about July 4 Summerfield "unlawfully, willfully and feloniously did of malice aforethought kill and murder Lynn A. Jackenheimer."

The phrase "of malice aforethought" signifies that a homicide was both intentional and premeditated. These are key elements in a charge of first degree murder.

Barnes also appointed attorney R. Andrew Womble from the District 1 Public Defenders office to represent Summerfield and scheduled a probable cause hearing for Sept. 28.

Womble has not requested bond for Summerfield, who remains in the custody of the Dare County Detention Center.

Catherine Kozak | September 24, 2012

The Ohio man accused of stabbing and strangling his former girlfriend while vacationing on Hatteras Island over the July 4th holiday had a record of violence with her and another young woman going back to 2004.

Nathan Summerfield, 27, a medical sleep technician from Ashland, Ohio, was arrested in August on a first-degree murder charge after Lynn Jackenheimer’s body was found in a plastic bag off an isolated cul-de-sac in Frisco.

Summerfield disappeared for nearly six weeks before authorities found him in a motel room not far from Ashland. He was indicted by a Dare County grand jury earlier this month and has not yet entered a plea. But in a 911 call shortly after the slaying, his brother said that Summerfield had admitted killing Jackenheimer, 33.

Police records reveal that when a previous estranged girlfriend threatened to call her parents after repeatedly telling Summerfield to leave her room, he put his fist through two windows and slammed a door so hard it jammed shut.

As he left her house, he kicked out the window of her car. He was later arrested and charged with criminal damaging/endangering and criminal trespass.

Summerfield was then 18 years old.

The girl’s parents, Laura and Russell Stephens of Greenwich, Ohio, secured an order of protection to keep Summerfield away from their then- 16-year-old daughter, Kelly, according to reports provided by the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office. Over the next two years, Summerfield reportedly continued to call the parents and Kelly’s phone numbers, often hanging up when someone answered.

In May 2005, Laura Stephens told police that Summerfield was leaving messages, saying he was going to kill her husband. When police interviewed the family, Kelly admitted that she had been secretly dating Summerfield since that January, but they had broken up again. Summerfield later admitted to police that he had driven around a parking lot looking for Kelly, and had had a “heated” conversation with her father.

He was arrested and charged with menacing the parents.

About two weeks later, police received a call from Stephens saying Kelly had run away. After investigating, police found that she was with Summerfield. He was arrested for violation of the protection order.

More calls were made to the Stephenses and to Kelly, and even her little sister, in late June and again in July and August, many of them hang-ups, according to police reports. But it is not clear whether there were any subsequent arrests.

In January 2008, Laura Stephens called police and reported that Summerfield was at a bar where she was located. When police arrived, he was told to leave.

Numerous attempts to reach the Stephenses and their daughter were unsuccessful, and their telephone numbers were unavailable.

Kelly Van Driest, formerly Kelly Stephens, is now married and a new mother, according to her Facebook page. The page includes links to several Facebook pages supporting Jackenheimer.

“I’m a feminist, no matter what others say,” she wrote on her MySpace page. “Women and men are still not treated equally . . . and I fight for the right that they should be!”

Van Driest, who went to nursing school, also talked about how close she is to her parents.

When Jackenheimer died, apparently while Leland, her 3-year-old son with Summerfield, and her 13-year-old daughter, Ciara, were sleeping, she was vacationing as a family in an effort to have a civil relationship with the father of her child, Lora Johnson, Lynn’s mother, said in a telephone interview.

“She thought that was working,” Johnson said. “She was trying to have a cordial relationship with him.”

In recent months, he was writing her letters saying he had changed and had learned a lot in the three years they’d been apart. But Jackenheimer made sure that the vacation cottage they rented had separate bedrooms, Johnson said, and she was not looking to rekindle any romance.

“Lynn hasn’t been with him since the last domestic violence,” she said. “She had a restraining order on him in 2009.”

According to a report from Ashland City Police, on Dec. 21 of that year, Jackenheimer called police to the house she had shared with Summerfield for two years, saying he had grabbed her by the throat and choked her. He then pushed her onto the kitchen table and pinned her down by her throat, pulling her to the floor and dragging her to the living room by her neck. Screaming at her to shut up so the kids wouldn’t hear them, he finally let go and left.

Jackenheimer also told the officer that “Nathan is usually quiet and nice to her,” but in the previous months he’d “been on edge and blows up for the smallest things” and she thought he was using steroids.

In January, she said, he had pushed her out of the house when she was naked and locked the door. He thought she was cheating on him because of the time it took her to get back from a store.

“Victim said she is scared of the defendant,” the report said. “She said, ‘It’s hard telling what he would do to me.’ ”

Summerfield was arrested and charged with domestic violence. According to news reports, he was convicted, but his 60-day sentence was suspended.

Since then, Johnson said, she and her husband Raymond didn’t trust Summerfield. She and Lynn’s father broke up when Lynn was 2 years old, she said, and he moved to Texas. In 2009, would send Lynn nasty letters, she said, followed by “Oh, I’m so sorry” letters.

Lynn didn’t know anything about his past arrests until months into the relationship, she said.

“If you’re just running into him, not knowing the other side of him, he was just a quiet, shy guy,” Johnson said. “The other side? Very jealous, very controlling. Stalking.

“My daughter had to keep changing her password. He was very aggressive and violent.”

Jackenheimer also had some rough times with her ex-husband, Ciara’s father.

In 2003, Jackenheimer called police and reported that her ex-husband, Matthew Sheppard, had thrown clothes in her face and verbally assaulted her during a child visitation exchange. Sheppard told police that they were throwing the items at each other. Police advised them to avoid confrontation while exchanging the child, and no charges were filed.

Records show that police were called again in 2007 over a physical argument between the couple, where family members found them rolling on the floor. Both accused the other of hitting, but neither wanted to file charges.

Johnson said her daughter was a devoted, loving mother. That’s why she thought the worst when Summerfield came back from North Carolina with the children, and no Lynn — “because she wouldn’t let her kids go home without her.”

Although she has a mild form of autism, Johnson said, Ciara has been able to talk about some details. While they were at the vacation house, she said that Summerfield kept telling her to go ask her mother if she loved him.

“For the most part, she only knows what happened after the fact,” Johnson said.

The night she was killed, Jackenheimer went ghost crab hunting on the beach with the children, then they went to bed. When Ciara woke up, her mother wasn’t there.

Summerfield told her that Jackenheimer had drank two bottles of wine and ran off to the ocean. He said he was going to take Leland with him to go look for their mother.

Johnson said that Summerfield had wanted to send Ciara back to Ohio on a plane or a bus, but she was too young. She now lives with the Johnsons, and Summerfield’s parents are challenging them for custody of Leland.

A lifelong resident of Ashland, Jackenheimer worked several jobs so she could take care of her children. Johnson said she was planning to go to school to become a radiologist.

By nature, she said, her daughter always tried to see the good in people. But she overestimated Summerfield.

“She just honestly didn’t think he was capable of going that far,” Johnson said. “She has a trusting heart — unfortunately.”

ASHLAND COUNTY, Ohio -- The parents of Nate Summerfield have filed a motion with the Ashland County Court requesting to be included in the custody hearings of Lynn Jackenheimer’s children.

Summerfield is the father of Jackenheimer’s son, according to court officials.

There was a hearing regarding visitation Tuesday. The hearing was postponed and no custody has been granted at this time, according to the court.

The court can confirm that an agreement has been met between the two parties.

Nate Summerfield is accused of killing Jackenheimer while they were on vacation in North Carolina.

ASHLAND, Ohio - Authorities in North Carolina will not seek the death penalty for an Ashland, Ohio man accused of killing his girlfriend.

Nate Summerfield is charged with stabbing and strangling 33-year-old Lynn Jackenheimer while the two were on vacation in Nags Head over the Fourth of July in 2012.

Attorney for the first district of North Carolina Frank Darrish said it is not a capital case because Summerfield was indicted on first-degree murder. Only aggravated murder charges are eligible for the death penalty in North Carolina, prosecutors said.

If convicted, Summerfield faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole.

After Jackenheimer's murder, Summerfield came back to Ohio, and dropped their then-3-year-old son and her teen daughter with a family friend, police said. On July 14, a construction worker found Jackenheimer’s remains in a bag in Frisco, North Carolina.

After five weeks on the run, Summerfield was arrested at a hotel in Wadsworth on Aug. 15 and extradited to Dare County.

MANSFIELD – A hearing on motions in the Lynn Jackenheimer murder case has been scheduled for next Monday, according to a press release by North Carolina Dare County Sheriff Chief Deputy Steve Hoggard.

Prosecuting Attorney H.P. Williams said the hearing will be during the Sept. 15 term of Dare County Superior Court.

Hoggard referred all questions regarding specifics on the types of motions or how they may affect the case to the District Attorney’s Office in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

District Attorney Andrew Womble and Prosecuting Attorney Williams could not be reached for comment. Messages were left at both offices.

In July 2012, Jackenheimer went to the Outer Banks for a vacation with her estranged boyfriend Nathan Summerfield, their son and her daughter. Summerfield returned the children to Ashland on July 8, 2012, but Jackenheimer was not with them.

She last was seen alive July 3. Jackenheimer's body was found July 14 on Hatteras Island, N.C. She had been strangled and stabbed, according to the autopsy.
