CBS/AP) TUCSON, Ariz. - Perla Morales, an Arizona mother, is in jail after authorities say she fatally shot her 17-month-old son and 4-year-old daughter before injuring herself during a Saturday night shooting attack.



Tucson police declined to release the suspected motive behind the shooting and did not specify how Morales, 25, injured herself.


Investigators said 17-month-old Richard Rosovich Jr. died at his home while 4-year-old Emma Rosovich was pronounced dead shortly after at a hospital.

Cause they want to make it look like they tried to take their life when in reality, that is not what they want to do. They figure they w/get sympathy. What a crock!

Twenty-five-year-old Perla Morales is facing two counts of first degree murder after authorities say she fatally shot her 17-month-old son and four-year-old daughter. The two children are both dead in a gruesome crime that has rocked the city of Tuscon, Ariz. The coward of a mother also tried to end her life after carrying out the horrendous murders of her own flesh and blood children.
Seventeen-month-old Richard Rosovich Jr. died immediately after being shot by his mother, but his older sister, Emma Rosovich, was pronounced dead at the hospital after suffering. Perla Morales allegedly took her own children's lives after fighting with her boyfriend, proving that some women are just unworthy of the biological process of breeding. She took the lives of her children after a simple dispute with a man, someone who didn't even want to be with her.

After he threatened to leave her, she shot those two innocent children "multiple times."

This case brings memories of the Diane Downs shootings, which occurred in the 1980s. Diane Downs rushed into an emergency room in Oregon claiming that a carjacker had shot her and her three children. Come to find out, she did it all by herself. While one child died, another indicated extreme fear when she was visited by her mother in the hospital, causing immediate suspicion. Her motive? She wanted to be free from motherhood to pursue an affair she was having. Naturally, the man wanted nothing more to do with her.

Mothers who kill their own children are a heartless variety of criminal.

Fighting with her boyfriend and he threatened to leave her because he no longer wants to be with her, so she kills her two innocent children and tries to kill herself also. Makes a lot of sense to me. Take your precious babies to your family instead of killing them. No man is worth killing your children and yourself over.

A 25-year-old mother who police said killed her two children told detectives she shot them after an argument with her boyfriend, a court document states.

A detective wrote in an interim complaint that Perla Morales said her boyfriend threatened to leave her and that she admitted to shooting her children "multiple times".

The shooting occurred Saturday shortly after 7 p.m. in the 900 block of West Calle Colado, near West Valencia Road and Interstate 19 in the Elvira Neighborhood.

Morales called 911 and said she needed an ambulance because her children were dead, the document states. When the 911 operator called Morales back, Morales told the operator that she shot her kids and cut her wrists, the complaint says.

Tucson Fire Department paramedics and police found 17-month-old Richard Rosovich Jr. and 4-year-old Emma Rosovich with multiple gunshot wounds, according to the complaint.

Richard was pronounced dead at the house at 7:27 p.m., and Emma was taken to a hospital, where she died at 8:06 p.m., the document states.

Morales also was taken to the hospital, with injuries that were not life-threatening, and she was arrested Sunday on suspicion of two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse.

Child Protective Services had no prior contact with Morales or the children, said Tasya C. Peterson, a state Department of Economic Security spokeswoman, on Monday.

"She loved her children. She was a good mother," said Sandy Ramirez, a cousin of Morales.

Morales struggled with depression, said Teddy Rosovich, the uncle of Morales' boyfriend, Richard Rosovich Sr., 36.

"I tried to get her to go for mental health counseling, or to see a therapist. But she would never go," Teddy Rosovich said Sunday.

Lupe Wilson, a family friend who was with Morales' mother Sunday, said family members are struggling and trying to cope because they have no answers. "The family needs a lot of prayers. That is what they need," Wilson said.

Morales and Richard Rosovich Sr. had been together about five years, Teddy Rosovich said. Emma was not his biological child, but Richard raised her as his own.

"Richard loved those children," said Teddy Rosovich, who described little Richard and Emma as very loving. "They would run and hug and kiss me when I'd go visit them," recalled Teddy Rosovich.

Morales, whose bail was set at $1 million, is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Pima County Justice Court on Aug. 22 at 1:30 p.m.

The death penalty trial for Perla Morales, the mom accused of killing her two young children, has been scheduled for Feb. 4, 2014.

Morales sat crying in court Monday as her attorney, Dawn Priestman, discussed the trial date. Priestman also informed Judge Jane Eikleberry Morales will not be having her IQ tested.

The U.S. does not allow people with intellectual disabilities to be executed, but apparently Priestman has come to the conclusion Morales' intelligence is high enough it would be a waste of time to have her tested.

Prosecutors believe Morales, 26, qualifies for the death penalty because she shot multiple victims and both were under 15.

Morales told police she shot 17-month-old Richard Rosovich Jr. and 4-year-old Emma Rosovich several times after her boyfriend, Richard Rosovich Sr., threatened to leave her Aug. 11, court documents say.

Morales called 911 and told the dispatcher she needed an ambulance because her children were dead, and hung up. When the dispatcher called back, Morales told the dispatcher she had shot her kids and cut her wrists, court documents state.

Richard was pronounced dead at the home near West Valencia Road and Interstate 19, and Emma died at the hospital an hour after the 911 call.

Forensic pathologist Jennifer Gardetto performed the autopsies on both children. She noted Emma was shot three times in the torso and one of the shots was fired close enough that soot was found around the wound.

Richard was shot twice in the torso and once in the left arm. Again, one of the shots was fired close enough to leave soot.

A status hearing has been scheduled for April 15.
