"Her memory is excellent from what we could tell," said Lynda Rebel, a local resident who met Wrench.

Wrench was in the hospital for months, but now has been able to return home after recovering from serious head injuries.

Suwannee County Sheriff Deputies say Wrench was left for dead on Highway 90 near 153rd road.

She was in a medically induced coma and for a while no one knew her identity.

Officials believe her boyfriend, Shawn O'Bryan, beat and dragged her in a wooded area off of 90.

He was arrested in Illinois and extradited back to Suwannee County.

Lynda Rebel and Beth Beaver are two Live Oak residents who kept up with Wrench's story. They spoke to us about the emotional meeting they all had.

"She is more awesome than everyone thinks she ever could be, she's funny, she's smart," Rebel said.

"Now I don't have to wonder what if, what if. Now I can say yes, yes, she's on the road to recovery," said Beaver.

People locally and across the country pushed the media and each other to build awareness for Suwannee's 'Jane Doe.'

"Shannon said she would like to be a victim's advocate when she gets all better, she's on a long road," Rebel added.

Wrench has returned to Illinois with her mother. Rebel says she wanted to thank everyone who was in her corner this whole time.

BREAKING: Arrest made for attempted first degree murder of Shannon Wrench, formerly known as Jane Doe
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Jeff Waters, editor
Suwannee Democrat

Live Oak — Suwannee County Sheriff Tony Cameron told The Suwannee Democrat that Jane Doe is Shannon Wrench, 34, of Rantoul, Illinois and that a fellow Rantoulan was arrested for attempted first degree murder of Wrench.

Cameron gave the information first to the Democrat.

Cameron said that Wrench was able to give information to authorities so an arrest warrant could be obtained on Shawn Patrick O'Bryan, 38, of Rantoul, Illinois who was arrested today by the Rantoul Police Department on a charge of attempted first degree murder.

"We will be waiting to see if he waives extradition," Cameron said. "Either way, he is in jail in Rantoul, Illinois."

Cameron wouldn't give too many specifics, but stated that Wrench and O'Bryan knew each other somehow. He wouldn't elaborate on how the two ended up in Suwannee County only that O'Bryan has ties to the Gainesville area.

"From what we can understand he has family that lives in Gainesville," said Cameron.

O'Bryan is in jail with no bond.

He will eventually be brought back to Suwannee County, Cameron said.

Rantoul man arrested for attempted murder in Florida

Sat, 08/11/2012 - 11:29pm
By MARY SCHENK/For Rantoul Press

A Rantoul man was arrested Friday for allegedly trying to kill his own girlfriend, who had been in a medically induced coma in a Florida hospital and unidentified for almost a month.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Shawn P. O'Bryan, 38, remained in the Champaign County Jail in Urbana Saturday, held without bond on a warrant out of Suwannee County, Florida, for the attempted murder of Shannon M. Wrench, 34, also of Rantoul.

Rantoul police Sgt. Marcus Beach said it wasn't until earlier this week that authorities even learned the identity of the severely injured Wrench through fingerprints.

Badly beaten, Wrench was found about 10 a.m. on Monday, July 16, on the side of a rural county road off U.S. 90 near Live Oak, Fla., which is in northern Florida about mid-way between Tallahassee and Jacksonville.

"A passerby saw a leg protruding from bushes off the road. When the sheriff got there, they found who we now know to be Shannon Wrench, unconscious and not responsive about 80 feet off the roadway. She had no identification on her. She had a severe head injury and multiple abrasions and bruises," said Beach, who has actively worked the case with Florida authorities since Wednesday.

Wrench was airlifted to a University of Florida hospital in Gainesville, Beach said, where medical authorities put her in a coma to assist her recovery while police set about trying to learn her identity.

"They had no idea who she was. They submitted her fingerprints to AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) and also put out flyers in the area trying to identify who she was. They didn't have any luck. No one was able to identify her until Wednesday, Aug. 8, when they got the fingerprint results back," said Beach.

Learning she was from Rantoul, Suwannee County sheriff's investigators contacted Beach Wednesday to see if Rantoul police had had contact with her or her family members. Beach learned that in May, Wrench had been involved in a traffic stop in Rantoul in a Dodge Durango sport utility vehicle. They also found the name of a former boyfriend of hers through a separate police contact.

Based on that information, Beach interviewed the former boyfriend in Rantoul, who reported he had last seen Wrench around the first of July in Rantoul. Her SUV was loaded with personal items and she told him that she was moving to Florida. That man also identified O'Bryan as Wrench's current boyfriend.

Police then went to O'Bryan's house and found the Dodge Durango - which registered to both her and O'Bryan - in the back of the house. Working with the Florida authorities, Beach said Rantoul police obtained a search warrant for the SUV and interviewed O'Bryan. They talked with him but did not have probable cause to arrest him on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Aug. 9, Wrench regained consciousness and was able to talk to police.

"She was able to verify that she was with Shawn and he was the one that injured her," said Beach, declining to go into specifics of what she said. He did say that the beating occurred in the rural location where she was found.

Florida authorities then obtained the warrant for O'Bryan's arrest on Friday and Rantoul police arrested him at his home in the 600 block of St. Andrews Circle about 4:15 p.m. without incident.

Beach said O'Bryan on Wednesday had asked for a lawyer so police did not interview him further after his arrest Friday.

He said Wrench and O'Bryan were planning to move to Florida together to find work. O'Bryan apparently is from the area in Florida where she was found.

O'Bryan is expected to appear before a Champaign County judge Monday to address the question of his extradition to Florida.

A man accused of beating "Jane Doe" and leaving her for dead on the side of the road in Suwannee County will soon come back to Florida to stand trial for it.

The Suwannee County Sheriff says Shawn O'Bryan will likely be brought back in the next 10 days.

O'Bryan is accused of beating his girlfriend, Shannon Wrench, and dragging her body into the woods off Highway 90.

O'Bryan was arrested Friday at his apartment in the small town of Rantoul, Illinois. His neighbors are stunned by the allegations.

"We each came over and you know, talked from time to time. He's always been ... offered to help fix things. I just would have never thought, you know, this could go on so close to home," neighbor Anthony Chickini said. "It's scary, very scary. I guess it holds true, you don't know who your neighbors are."

Wrench was in a coma for weeks. She is recovering now at Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

A prison transport service will bring O'Bryan back to Florida. We'll let you know when he arrives in Suwannee County to face charges.

Suwannee County, Florida- August 13, 2012

Suwannee County Sheriff Tony Cameron told Eyewitness News reporter Eames Yates "I think we have a very strong case. I don't have any doubt that we can prove what occurred when the time comes."

What the sheriff says occurred was attempted murder in the first degree.
Shawn Patrick O'Bryan is accused of dragging Shannon Wrench onto the side of a Suwannee County road and leaving her for dead with a severe head injury. O'Bryan appeared in court in Champaign County, Illinois and waived extradition meaning he will be sent back to Florida to face his charges.

Suwannee County resident Thomas Mulkey said "it makes me feel very sad for her. My heart goes out for her, but no compassion for him whatsoever."

Another Suwannee County resident, Gloria Presley, said "I feel released because that was a terrible terrible thing for her to have to go through."

Wrench is currently at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida. Her health is improving and deputies say she is now able to communicate.

Sheriff Cameron went on to say "once we had him identified, she is responsible for knowing the situation, that she came to Florida with him in her vehicle. And the vehicle was back in Illinois there at his home."

A woman badly beaten and left on side of the road has now been identified.

Suwannee County Sheriff Tony Cameron tells us she is 34-year-old Shannon Wrench from Rantoul, Illinois.

"We never have something happen like that here and it was just a shock to me and the entire community really," said Joey Wade, local resident.

Once they figured her identity, that led them to 38-year-old Shawn O'Bryan. He was arrested in Rantoul by the police department on Friday.

Officials say Wrench continues to improve everyday. Local residents grew close to the story over the weeks and are happy about her recovery.

"Every body kind of banded together to find out exactly who she was, what happened to her and why it happened to her," Wade added.

"Everybody wanted to know what they could do to help, everybody wanted to help," said Douglas Carl, another local resident following the story.

Formerly known as Jane Doe, Wrench was found July 16 by a passerby.

It was on highway 90 near 153rd road in Suwannee County.

Sheriff Cameron believes her body was dragged to a wooded area near the road.

Wrench continues to recover at Shands Hospital in Gainesville. She woke up from a medically induced coma on Tuesday.

Thursday, Cameron says they identified her through fingerprint analysis.

O'Bryan is still in the Champaign County Jail.

[UPDATE] Live Oak, Florida- August 9, 2012- 6:30pm

On July 16th a woman later deemed Jane Doe was found on a road just off of Highway 90 in Suwannee County. No one knew who she was but one thing was certain. She had a serious head wound as a result of blunt force trauma.
Suwannee County Sheriff Tony Cameron said "no matter how she got on that roadway whoever did this took her by her feat and drug her 30 to 40 feet off the roadway and into the bushes and left her."

The Suwannee County Sheriff's office immediately began trying to identify her. Those efforts have finally payed off. After broadening the search using her fingerprints they've confirmed who she is.. but they're not releasing her name due to the active investigation. Her ID isn't the only good news. On Tuesday she awoke from the her medically induced coma in the Shands Hospital at the University of Florida.

Sheriff Cameron went on to say "now that I think that her health is going ot be okay, and that we're going to get her back on her feet, and we know who she is now my next goal is that whoever did this to her needs to be behind bars."

The Sheriff said the woman has been speaking with authorities and confirmed that she is 34 years old.

[UPDATE] Live Oak, Florida- August 9, 2012

Suwannee County's 'Jane Doe' has been 100 percent identified according to Suwannee County Sheriff Tony Cameron. He said that she was identified by her fingerprints. The Sheriff's office continued to run checks through the local crime lab until she was positively ID'd.

Sheriff Cameron also said that she is not from the Suwannee County area but is not releasing her name at this time due to the active investigation. He did say that she is 34 years old and is "rapidly improving" after awaking from a medically induced coma on Tuesday (8/7).

The woman was found on the side of a road off of Highway 90 on July 16th with a severe head injury as a result of blunt force trauma. She was taken to the Shands Hospital at the University of Florida where she was placed in the medically induced coma.

Coming up tonight on Eyewitness News we'll bring you the interview with the Suwannee County Sheriff Tony Cameron.

[UPDATE] Live Oak, Florida- August 8, 2012

On July 16, a local resident found an unidentified woman on the side of the road battered and bruised. It was right off of Highway 90 near 153rd Road in Suwannee County.

"I don't know it's just something about her that says We're gonna fight for you girl," said Lynda Rebel, a Suwannee County resident.

The woman woke up from her medically induced coma on Tuesday.

She's recovering at Shands Hospital in Gainesville. Suwannee County Sheriff Tony Cameron said she is "Somewhat responsive."

She's giving signs like a 'thumbs up or thumbs down.'

"The second we get up, yes we look for who's got a new update... Is today gonna be the day someone tells us what her name is?" Rebel said.

Deputies still don't know the identity of this woman. They say people from across the country have been calling, emailing, hoping to have the right information about this Jane Doe.

A candlelight vigil was held Monday night in her honor, the next day, the woman came out of the coma.

"That's what we think about when we get up and that's what we go to bed thinking, we say our little prayers for her every single day," Rebel added.

The Sheriff's Office believes someone was involved in moving her body from the road off to the side. But, there are still no leads to how she got here in the first place.

The Sheriff's Office reminds anyone with information about this to call (386) 364-3412

Live Oak, Florida- August 6, 2012

Suwannnee County Sheriff Tony Cameron said "We had a resident that was riding by and looked over and said 'there's someone's legs!'"

Those legs belonged to a still unidentified woman, being called Jane Doe, who appears to be 20 to 35 years old. She was found on July 16th with a head injury as a result of blunt force trauma. She was taken to the Shands Hospital at the University of Florida and is currently in a medically induced coma.

Her body was on the side of a road just off of Highway 90... Anything before that is a mystery.

The Suwannee County Sheriff's Office did say that someone was involved in moving Jane Doe's body to the side of the road. At last check there are no leads as to who that person may be.

Sheriff Cameron went on to say "did she fall off the back of a motorcycle and somebody say oh my gosh she's dead and just pulled her off to the side of the road and they were afraid they were going to be in trouble.. I don't know."

The candlelight vigil was held in front of the Suwannee County Courthouse. Many participants just want this girls family to know what happened to her.

Beth Beaver/Suwannee County Resident Beth Beaver said "It could be your sister, your mother, you know, a niece. You know, you just don't know and maybe by getting her information and her picture out there somebody will say wow that's my niece and I haven't seen her in ages."

O’Bryan, 39, was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Empty Shannon Wrench on the mend Former Jane Doe back home in Illinois

Post by raine1953 Sat Oct 06, 2012 2:21 pm

Live Oak — Shannon Wrench, a woman who Suwannee County residents knew as “Jane Doe” for sometime is now back home in Rantoul, Ill. and her mother, Kathleen Bateman reports she is doing well.

On July 16, Wrench was found unresponsive and badly beaten in some weeds off of 153rd Road by a motorist passing by at an intersection on US 90. She was discovered wearing cut off blue jean shorts and a Grateful Dead t-shirt with no shoes.

For three weeks and a day, Wrench was in a medically induced coma in a Gainesville hospital before she started showing vast signs of improvement. She awoke from the coma on Tuesday, Aug. 7.

“We knew she was in Florida, so to our knowledge she wasn’t missing or in danger,” said Wrench’s mother. Bateman was not notified of the incident until Aug. 8 when she received a call from her local police department.
“They called about a quarter after nine and asked if I was Shannon Wrench’s mom. I told them I was and they asked me to call the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office, so I did,” she said. “That’s when Sgt. Chris Fry told me my daughter was in a hospital in Gainesville and she had been in a coma since the 16th day of July and they didn’t know who she was.”

Wrench was admitted at Shands in Gainesville the day she was found, suffering from multiple skull fractures, and major cuts and bruises. She remained there until Aug. 27 and then was transferred to Signature Health Care in Gainesville for physical, occupational and speech therapy. She was discharged on Sept. 15 to go home.

Since returning home to Illinois, Wrench’s health status continues to improve.
“We had an uneventful trip back to Illinois,” Bateman stated. “Shannon is doing well and working hard on her recovery, and considering the injuries she had, she’s doing good. We know that it will be a long process but the kind words and thoughts from everyone in the area have helped us through this difficult time.”

“Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers,” Wrench said.
Her mother added, “You can’t tell me there wasn’t divine intervention. She was not supposed to be found. But something made her raise her leg up and she was able to be found. I tell her all the time she had guardian angels watching over her. We have just been overwhelmed with support by the people of the county and have felt each and every prayer.

Wrench went on to say, “A special thanks to the ladies that made me the blanket. I didn’t know that so many people could care about a stranger. God bless.”

Wrench’s boyfriend at the time, Shawn Patrick O’Bryan, 38, 646 St. Andrews Circle, Rantoul, Ill., was arrested by the Champaign County Illinois Sheriff’s Office for attempted first degree murder in the case. O’Bryan was transferred and booked into the Suwannee County Jail on Aug. 20 and awaits a trial that is set to be held Jan. 28 - Feb. 1, 2013.

Live Oak — The attorney for Shawn O’Bryan, the man accused of attempting to kill Shannon Wrench, was awarded a continuance during his pre-trial on Thursday, Nov. 8.
O’Bryan’s trial date is tentatively set for Jan. 28 to Feb. 1, 2013.

Eventually, Wrench started showing vast signs of improvement. She awoke from the coma on Tuesday, Aug. 7, and on Friday, Aug. 10, O’Bryan, 646 St. Andrews Circle, Rantoul, Ill., was arrested by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office out of Illinois for attempted first degree murder. O’Bryan was transferred and booked into the Suwannee County Jail on Aug. 20.

Live Oak — Shawn Patrick O’Bryan pleaded guilty Thursday for the July 16, 2012, attempted murder of Shannon Wrench, according to court records.
O’Bryan, 39, was sentenced to 15 years in prison and five years of probation following his prison release for attempted first degree murder during a pre-trial Thursday.
Wrench, 35, was found unresponsive and badly beaten in weeds alongside 153rd Road North in Suwannee County on July 16, 2012. She was discovered wearing cut off blue jean shorts and a grateful dead t-shirt with no shoes.

“I’m glad it’s finally over,” Wrench told the Democrat during a phone call on Monday. “I don’t think he got what he deserved, but I’m satisfied with the result.”
For three weeks and a day, Wrench was in a medically induced coma in a Gainesville hospital, suffering from multiple skull fractures, and major cuts and bruises. Wrench started showing vast signs of improvement. She awoke from the coma on Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012.

Just three days later on Friday, Aug. 10, 2012, O’Bryan, 646 St. Andrews Circle, Rantoul, Ill., was arrested by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office out of Illinois for attempted first degree murder. O’Bryan was transferred and booked into the Suwannee County Jail on Aug. 20, 2012.

Wrench’s mother told the story of how she received the dreadful news of her daughter being found in July 2012..

“They called about a quarter after nine and asked if I was Shannon Wrench’s mom. I told them I was and they asked me to call the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office, so I did,” Kathleen Bateman said. “That’s when Sgt. Chris Fry told me my daughter was in a hospital in Gainesville and she had been in a coma since the 16th day of July and they didn’t know who she was.”

Bateman made her way to Gainesville where Wrench was receiving medical treatment. Wrench was first admitted to Shands Gainesville for treatment. She remained there until Aug. 27, 2012, and then was transferred to Signature Health Care in Gainesville for physical, occupational and speech therapy. She was discharged on Sept. 15 to go home.

The sentencing comes after the case remained in the court system for nearly a year. O’Bryan was previously scheduled for trial on Jan. 28 to Feb. 1, 2013, however, O’Bryan’s attorney was awarded a continuance during his pre-trial. On July 11, O’Bryan was scheduled for another pre-trial, but this time he accepted a plea bargain and was sentenced.

On Thursday, Wrench was told by a secretary at the Third Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office O’Bryan had accepted the plea bargain.

“The defense attorney originally offered 10 years in prison and 10 years of probation, but we didn’t feel that was enough time behind bars,” Bateman said. “We counter offered 15 years in prison with five years of probation so he could be monitored after his release, and Shawn accepted that.”

Bateman continued, “We had no problem returning to Florida for trial, but we didn’t want him to be found guilty on a lesser charge, which would always be a possibility with a jury trial. We did not want that possibility; we wanted him guilty of attempted first degree murder.”

“Now that the legal part is over, it’s a sigh of relief for us. Most importantly, we’re glad society will be protected from him,” Bateman said.

Wrench said she is doing well and continues on the road to recovery.

“I’m doing pretty good,” Wrench said. “I just started with a program that will help me with school and job training. I’m just exploring my options.”

Regarding Wrench’s health concerns, Bateman said her daughter has more good days than bad now, although there are some physical effects from the incident she still battles.

“We can finally move on with life and put this behind us. Shannon can close that portion of her life and move on,” Bateman said.

What a worm he is. He doesn't look like he could beat up anybody. I might even be able to kick his ass. LOL. I am sure when he dragged her to that ditch he thought she was dead. This brave woman must have an incredible survival instinct. I am so glad it turned out well for her.
Maybe she will speak out on DV one day, who knows.

Hope they dragged her attacker across the road and dumped him in a jail cell for 30 hours. Not even the same, but still. Give him NO dignity.
