National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, Jan. 11

Fayetteville's Shaniya Davis case raised an awareness to the issue of human trafficking.

Most think that human trafficking happens outside the United States, in other third world countries. Back in 2009 it became painfully aware of these crimes took place in our city when 5-year-old Shaniya Davis was trafficked and murdered by people that she knew.

Antoniette Nicole Davis, her mother, and Mario Andrette McNeil both face murder charges. The trial has been scheduled for Feb. 18 according to a Fayetteville Observer report today. If convicted, McNeil could face the death penalty.

In 2012 Fayetteville and Fort Bragg has had its share of sex crimes that involved minors along with some human trafficking cases. Here are some of the past posted stories:

that included workshops and awareness talks by survivors from around the state and country. Hundreds turned out for Fayetteville's 4th annual Stop Child Trafficking walk at Festival Park to further increase awareness on the topic.
