Thanks for posting this. His case is one that I have been following along with. It is bizarre that he lead such a normal life, a good student and engaged to be married yet he is a serial killer.

Craigslist Killer Victims' Names Released

The names of the victims of alleged "Craigslist Killer" Phillip Markoff have been made public. Markoff is accused of assaulting Keith Melton with a pistol and Cynthia Melton, a Las Vegas exotic dancer, with the intent to rob her. Melton called Warwick police and reported an attempted robbery by a customer with whom she'd arranged a lap dance in a hotel room, saying he bound her and tried to rob her at gunpoint when her husband Keith Melton entered the room and stopped the attack. Cynthia's description of her attacker matched that of Markoff, who was also wanted in the shooting death of 25-year-old Julissa Brisman in Boston just two days earlier. Markoff is also accused of the April 10th robbery of 29-year-old Las Vegas prostitute Trisha Leffler in Boston. He has since pled not guilty to first-degree murder and six other charges in connection to the Boston cases in Suffolk County Superior Court and is awaiting trial in the Nashau Street jail in Boston.

Alleged 'craigslist killer' Markoff's Boston trial postponed

The trial of Philip Markoff, charged with kllling a masseuse he met on the craigslist Web site, has been postponed until later this month, the Suffolk County, Mass. District Attorney's Office said in a news release on Monday.

Markoff, a former medical student who also has been accused in the attempted robbery of another woman at the Holiday Inn Express in Warwick on April 16, had been scheduled to go on trial on Tuesday in Superior Court.

The district attorney's office said that the postponement was necessary because the prosecutor assigned to the case is tried up in another trial. No date was given for the beginning of Markoff's trial, but the district attorney's office said it likely will begin during the week of Jan. 25.

Markoff is charged in Boston with the April 14 fatal shooting of Julissa Brisman of New York City and the armed robbery of another woman four days earlier, the Associated Press reported.

Authorities say he met both women through craigslist. Markoff has pleaded not guilty.

The victim in the Warwick case told police she was held at gunpoint at the Holiday Inn Express, but her assailant fled when her husband came into the room.

There is also a book that the 48 Hours Mystery was based on.

The new book is called "Seven Days of Rage" and is by Paul Larosa, a veteran producer for "48 Hours Mystery" CBS News, and Maria Cramer, a Boston Globe reporter.

“The biggest new thing in the book is about Philip Markoff’s online secret sexual life,” LaRosa said earlier this week. “He had posted profiles on bisexual and alternative lifestyle Web sites since 2007.”
Also in the book are two others who said they survived attacks by Markoff and interviews with former high school classmates. He has pleaded not guilty in the April 10 armed robbery of a 29-year-old Las Vegas woman and the homicide of 25-year-old masseuse Julissa Brisman four days later.

"48 Hours Mystery" is also running an hour long special on the case Saturday, Sept. 19 at 10 p.m. ET/PT in conjunction with the release of the book "Seven Days of Rage: The Deadly Crime Spree of The Craigslist Killer" (Pocket Books).

Moved from another thread:
by BJ in OR on Wed Jan 20, 2010 3:16 am

The latest court hearing for accused “Craigslist killer” Philip Markoff has been postponed because the prosecutor is scheduled to try a different murder case.

Markoff, 23, of Quincy, has pleaded not guilty in the April 14 fatal shooting of Julissa Brisman of New York City, and the April 10 robbing of a Las Vegas woman. Both of the crimes took place at Boston hotels.

Although a trial is still months away, a hearing scheduled for Tuesday was pushed back until the end of January because Edmond Zabin, the lead homicide prosecutor for the Suffolk County district attorney’s office, is also assigned to a murder trial that got under way on Monday.

On trial is 22-year-old Robert Iacoviello Jr., who is charged with fatally shooting a Revere police officer in September 2007. Jury selection was to begin Monday.

Jake Wark, spokesman for Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley, said Markoff’s hearing will likely be moved to late January.

Markoff is also charged in Rhode Island, for allegedly attacking a during the same week in which the Boston attacks took place.

Authorities say the Boston medical student met the three women through the classified-advertising Web site Craigslist.

Philip Markoff, the Boston University medical student suspected being the "Craigslist killer" found dead in his jail cell after an "apparent suicide"/ Case closed: Prosecutors drop charges against Philip Markoff Empty Internet Date Turned Out to be Gay Basher

Post by Nama Sat Mar 20, 2010 11:22 pm

A British man who had met what he thought was a prospective date online was assaulted, and his car vandalized, when he arrived at a park for an in-person encounter.

The 50-year-old unnamed victim had been corresponding with the alleged assailant via an online gay chat service, a March 18 article at the British new site Nuneaton News reported. When the victim arrived at the agreed-upon place, a park in the town of Burbage, at around 8:00 p.m. on the evening of March 14, he was confronted by four men who ordered him to surrender his money and proceeded to beat him. The victim told the men that he had no money with him, and they left the scene; the victim’s car was later found to have been vandalized.

The victim sought help from a nearby residence. He was treated at a hospital for his injuries, and released.

"It is appalling to think that this man was purposely targeted because of his sexual orientation, and we want the suspects to know that it is not something that we will tolerate," said Detective Constable Pete Watson. "It is always worth remembering that if you arrange to meet someone via an Internet chat room that you should never go alone and always meet in a public place," the officer added. "We would like anyone else who may have been a victim of an incident similar to this to call us immediately."

Similar incidents of violence in which gay men have been lured to remote places and then beaten or robbed have made headlines over the last few years in the United States. In October of 2006, four men used an Internet chat room to coax a gay man, 29-year-old Michael J. Sandy, to an isolated spot in Sheepshead Bay, an area of Brooklyn. The men beat Sandy and attempted to rob him; Sandy fled, but was struck and killed when he ran into traffic. The alleged assailants were tried on hate crimes charges.

In another incident that took place in New York, a resident of Queens, Michael Pecora, was found stabbed to death in his apartment. Police later arrested Alexys Fermaintt, who allegedly had been hired by Pecora online for sex and companionship.

One Internet service in particular, Craigslist, was associated with several high-profile crimes. In one instance, New York newsman George Weber solicited a heterosexual teenager to participate in rough sex sessions for a fee; the young man he hired, 16-year-old John Katehis, a bladed weapons enthusiast, stabbed Weber an estimated 50 times. Weber’s body was discovered two days later.

Most infamous was the so-called Craigslist Killer, a serial murderer who hired a female massage therapist through the popular online service, and then shot her to death in a hotel room on April 14, 2009. A student at the Boston University School of Medicine, Philip Markoff, was arrested in connection with the case; Markoff was also charged in the robbery of a female professional escort in Boston, and the attempted robbery of an exotic dancer in Warwick, Rhode Island. It was believed that the perpetrator had contacted all three victims through Craigslist. A claim was also made by at least one man who said that Markoff had answered a Craigslist ad looking for "males for transsexuals" and had sent explicit photos of himself.

Philip Markoff, the Boston University medical student suspected being the "Craigslist killer" found dead in his jail cell after an "apparent suicide"/ Case closed: Prosecutors drop charges against Philip Markoff Empty Judge says DNA can be taken in Craigslist killing

Post by Nama Sat Mar 20, 2010 11:23 pm

Prosecutors can obtain a DNA sample from the former Boston University medical student charged with killing a masseuse he met on Craigslist, a Massachusetts judge ruled Monday.

Discuss
COMMENTS (1)
Jake Wark, a spokesman for the Suffolk district attorney, said Superior Court Judge Frank Gaziano granted a motion to take DNA from an oral swab of Philip Markoff, who is being held without bail. The judge said the sample could only be compared to biological evidence seized by investigators in the case.

Markoff has pleaded not guilty in the April 14 shooting death of Julissa Brisman of New York City, and the armed robbery four days later of a Las Vegas woman, both at upscale Boston hotels. He has also been charged in an alleged attack on a stripper in Warwick, R.I.

Markoff met the women through advertisements for erotic services posted on Craigslist, a classified advertising Web site, prosecutors said.

"Investigators have recovered biological evidence in several locations in this case and one more DNA profile to compare that biological evidence against (Markoff) can only make that case stronger," Wark said.

Gaziano ruled on a motion originally made by the district attorney's office in October.

According to the motion, the Boston Police Department crime lab identified two blood stains taken from swabs on a handgun that was seized during a search of Markoff's apartment in Quincy, Mass. Prosecutors allege that Markoff used the weapon to bludgeon Brisman before the victim was shot three times at close range.

Investigators also found several other items in the apartment, including four pairs of women's underwear wrapped inside of socks and hidden in a box spring.

"A comparison of any DNA profiles generated from the items of evidence can be compared to the DNA profile of the defendant and the three victims to either include or exclude those individuals as possible donors of said profiles," the motion read.

In written arguments opposing the DNA request, Markoff's attorney, John Salsberg, argued that prosecutors were going on a "fishing expedition."

The prosecution's motion failed to explain what biological evidence it wished to compare to Markoff's DNA, nor did it back up its suggestion that the defendant's DNA might be found on the evidence, Salsberg wrote.

In court Monday, Salsberg said an appeal of the judge's ruling would be considered.

The next court date in the case is March 29, Wark said. A trial date has not been set.

Markoff was engaged to Megan McAllister at the time of his arrest. McAllister ended the relationship with Markoff after visiting him in jail in June, and their wedding scheduled for August was subsequently canceled.

Philip Markoff, the Boston University medical student suspected being the "Craigslist killer" found dead in his jail cell after an "apparent suicide"/ Case closed: Prosecutors drop charges against Philip Markoff Empty What Happened to Alleged Craigslist Killer Philip Markoff?

Post by Nama Wed May 26, 2010 12:34 pm

Whatever happened to Philip Markoff, the young, blond Boston University medical student who was dubbed the Craigslist Killer?

The public hasn't seen or heard from Markoff since he was indicted for the murder of New York aspiring model Julissa Brisman, and the robbery of another woman, nearly a year ago. The last time anyone caught a glimpse of him was June 2009, and now the trial most likely will not take place until January 2011.

Since then, court dates in his case have come and gone but Markoff never shows up....and that is by design. His canny lawyer, John Salsberg, one of the finest defense lawyers in Boston, has purposely kept Markoff out of sight. The reason is clear: Salsberg is trying to tamp down publicity in the case and has decried leaks from law enforcement.

Every hearing, no matter how small, has been attended by members of the press and at least one camera crew. By keeping Markoff out of court, Salsberg has successfully kept Markoff out of the public's mind. The lawyer knows that if Markoff were to show up, Markoff's face would be plastered on that night's evening news and, depending on how he looks at this stage if he grew a beard or lost or gained an inordinate amount of weight - maybe even on the front page.

Because Markoff never appears, the most the press does is run a small brief or carry a small mention on that night's newscast.

From working on the case and writing a book on the case, "Seven Days of Rage," I know that Markoff is acclimating to life at the Nashua Street jail, and that his one-time finance Megan McAlister has left the states to go to medical school in St. Kitts.

Now another book on the case - "A Date with Death" by radio talk show host Michele McPhee - claims that although Markoff has tried to kill himself three times while in custody, most of his time in jail is spent gambling with other inmates and making homemade liquor out of rotten fruit!

A couple of more trial dates are scheduled for this summer but Salsberg has indicated he will hew to his policy of trying to keep Markoff out of sight on those upcoming dates.

A new trial date will be set for the man accused of being the Craigslist killer, most likely for January.

The trial of Philip Markoff was supposed to start in June, but Markoff's defense is still putting together a witness list and the prosecution is waiting for DNA results.

The parties will return to court on June 29 to select a new date.

The former Boston University medical student is charged with murdering Julissa Brisman, a New York City masseuse he met on Craigslist.

Markoff is also accused of robbing another woman at a Boston hotel. He has plead not guilty.

Post by Nama Sun Jul 04, 2010 12:04 am

The trial of a former Boston University medical student accused of killing a masseuse he met through Craigslist is expected to take place in March 2011.
Prosecutors and lawyers for Philip Markoff agreed Tuesday on a tentative date of March 14. Markoff was not at the hearing in Suffolk Superior Court.
Markoff has pleaded not guilty in the April 2009 fatal shooting of Julissa Brisman, of New York City, and the armed robbery of a Las Vegas woman, both at Boston hotels.
An Aug. 4 hearing is set for a planned defense motion to suppress Markoff's statement to police the day he was arrested. Markoff's lawyer also plans to ask the judge not to require Markoff's presence at that hearing.

BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - Accused "Craigslist Killer" Philip Markoff committed suicide Saturday night in his Nashua Street jail cell, sources confirmed to FOX25. Further details have not been released.

Sources confirmed that 24-year-old Markoff committed suicide Saturday night at around 10:20 p.m.

Markoff was charged in the April 2009 fatal shooting of Julissa Brisman, 26, of New York City, and the armed robbery of Trisha Leffler, a 29-year-old Las Vegas prostitute, both at Boston hotels. Authorities say he used anonymous e-mail addresses and pre-paid cell phones to set up meetings with the women he met through Craigslist, where they had advertised in its "erotic services" category.

Markoff had plead not guilty. He was also charged in an alleged attack on a stripper in Warwick, R.I.

Markoff was scheduled to stand trial in March 2011.

I did fix that for you lisette.

Philip Markoff, the Boston University medical student arrested in April and suspected being the "Craigslist killer" has been found dead in his jail cell after an "apparent suicide".

Ed Geary, Deputy Director of External Affairs at the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office in Massachusetts told CBS News Markoff was pronounced dead by medics at 10:17 a.m. Eastern on Sunday.

Markoff was being held at the Nashua Street Jail in Boston.

A statement released by Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis and Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said the suspect "was alone in his cell and all evidence collected thus far indicates that he took his own life."
Markoff, 22, was arrested during a traffic stop on Interstate 95 in Walpole, south of Boston. He was charged with a shooting death in a hotel of a masseuse and the robbery of another woman who both advertised their services on Craigslist.

Markoff's trial was expected in March.

John Salsberg, who was Markoff's lawyer, said he was shocked and saddened about his client's death. He would not comment further.

Markoff, a former Boston University student, pleaded not guilty in the April 2009 fatal shooting of Julissa Brisman, of New York City, and the armed robbery of a Las Vegas woman, both at Boston hotels.

Markoff's arrest came days after his image was shown on surveillance video at the hotels. Davis said that authorities had him under observation for days before making the arrest.

Shortly after his arrest in 2009, Markoff was put on suicide watch after shoelace marks were found on his neck. At the time, John Salsberg said Markoff was having difficulty transitioning "from being free to being incarcerated."

Thanks, LM, for fixing that. And thank for the article and the posting on the home page.

The article didn't say HOW he took his life. It always amazes me that inmates end up dead in their cells. I thought the guards kept an eye on them.

One less pervert out there to waste the tax payers money!

Wow I had to read that "headline" twice.

How very sad for everybody concerned. He could have given so much to the world.

Just look at all the people he disappointed that loved him so much.

All victims of this man. The families, friends. Everybody connected in any little way have surely lost their faith in humanity.

How could this happen? He had it all.

Do you think it was the gambling addiction? I wonder about that.

Philip Markoff, the man suspected of killing 25-year-old Julissa Brisman in a Boston hotel room after contacting her via Craigslist, was found dead in his jail cell Sunday, the victim of an apparent suicide. The man the media dubbed the “Craigslist Killer” was found with a plastic bag tied around his head and a cut artery, according to the Boston Globe.
Just a day after he would have been married for a year had his fiancee, Megan McAllister, not called off the wedding, Philip Markoff, according to authorities, took his own life. The former medical student was accused of not only murdering New York masseuse Julissa Brisman in April 2009 but of two other attacks on women he met through Craigslist ads as well.
Markoff was arrested on his way to Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut. He was placed on suicide watch shortly after the arrest following a correction officer noticing red marks on his neck that looked like ligature marks from shoelaces.
Although authorities believe all evidence points toward a suicide, the investigation into the alleged Craigslist Killer is ongoing.
According to his lawyer, Markoff was due again in court in mid-September. He was to go on trial for Julissa Brisman’s murder in March 2011.
Philip Markoff was 24.

When the world first saw Philip Markoff, frozen on surveillance footage, he was breezing through the lobby of a luxury hotel, nonchalantly tapping away on his cellphone. He looked nothing like anyone’s idea of a murder suspect.

But Markoff’s boy-next-door image masked a sordid, secret life, prosecutors said, a predatory existence in the seamy underworld of online prostitution, attacking and robbing women he met through Craigslist in apparent support of a gambling habit.

International attention branded the medical school student as the Craigslist killer.

Yesterday, almost exactly one year after his scheduled wedding day, his life came to a wretched end in a jail cell. Any hope of learning more about the dark impulses that had allegedly led Markoff to rob and kill died with him.

In the days and weeks following Markoff’s arrest in the slaying of Julissa Brisman, a 25-year-old erotic masseuse, details of his double life stunned his friends and family.

Prosecutors said Markoff chose women whom he could dominate and abuse and who were unlikely to report robberies to police.

Before his arrest, Markoff appeared to have it all. A promising doctor-in-training planning a storybook wedding to his doting college sweetheart, the tall, blond 23-year-old was the picture of youthful ambition, a small-town boy made good.

In the aftermath of Markoff’s arrest, some friends and family spoke in his defense, as did his fiancée, Megan McAllister, who described him as a “beautiful person inside and out’’ who “would not hurt a fly.’’ Many insisted that the police must have made a mistake.

But as evidence mounted against Markoff, whom McAllister had met at the State University of New York at Albany, she canceled the wedding, and some who knew Markoff said he had shown troubling signs.

A lab partner who worked closely with Markoff at Boston University School of Medicine said he appeared to experience wide mood swings and would sometimes be mired in deep depression. She considered alerting school counselors that he might be suicidal.

“He just wasn’t right in the head, and I knew it, and probably other people did, too,’’ Tiffany B. Montgomery, told the Globe in April 2009. “I got the impression he was really disturbed.’’

College friends describe Markoff as a driven overachiever who often seemed ill at ease, despite his accomplishments. He was wound tight, treating casual poker games as fierce competitions and becoming bitter when he lost, they said.

After logging long hours in the library or lab, he partied with intensity. More conservative than his classmates, he went out of his way to debate politics, aggressively voicing his support for gun rights or the war in Iraq. While he sometimes kept his distance in a way that made him seem aloof, he had, as one student put it, a “sharp edge.’’

But, in some ways, Markoff came into his own in college, gaining confidence and finding a niche in medicine.

He pledged a fraternity with other premed students and volunteered at the emergency room at a local hospital, where he met McAllister during his sophomore year. He graduated with honors in just three years and came to Boston to study medicine at Boston University.

Markoff had shown academic aptitude from a young age, described by his first-grade teacher as a “skinny little towheaded boy’’ who did well on every test. Raised by his mother and stepfather in a small town in upstate New York, he grew up solidly middle class and showed few signs of teen rebellion or angst.

“He’s that type that you’d like to mother, because he was just that nice young man, just a nice, clean-cut boy,’’ Sonja Hluska, a neighbor who taught Markoff in a high school literature class, told the Globe after his arrest.

In high school yearbook pictures, he is shown smiling, his hair neat and cleanly parted. He played golf and excelled on the bowling team. In one championship victory, he was described in a local newspaper as the “picture of consistency.’’

“On the spares I had good shooting,’’ the paper quoted him as saying. “I was able to adjust to the lane conditions. As a team we were solid, and it was enough.’’

Markoff’s mother worked at a nearby casino gift shop, and Markoff boasted of his gambling prowess in his high school yearbook, saying he bequeathed his skills to a friend so he “won’t lose his dad’s house.’’

Markoff and McAllister told police they were on their way to Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut when police stopped them and arrested Markoff. He was put on suicide watch and later under video surveillance after a jail officer saw marks on his neck that suggested he had tried to use shoelaces to hang himself.

“Everybody’s right when they say he was nice,’’ Montgomery told the Globe shortly after the arrest. “He was nice. But he was definitely strange, and he was strange in a dark way.’’

Before death, alleged Craigslist killer Markoff wrote ex-fiancee's name in blood

By Maria Cramer, Globe Staff

Philip Markoff, the accused "Craigslist killer," scrawled his ex-fiancee's name in blood on the wall of his cell before killing himself, according to several law enforcement officials with knowledge of the case.

Near the word "Megan" he also wrote the word "pocket," which had no immediate significance to investigators, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the case with the media. Markoff and his fiancee, Megan McAllister, had intended to marry Aug. 14, 2009 -- a year and a day before his body was found. Markoff's body was discovered yesterday morning in his jail cell in Boston.
The new details were revealed today as Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral, who runs the Nashua Street Jail where Markoff was being held, said there were no recent warning signs that the 24-year-old former medical student would try to kill himself. Markoff was awaiting trial on charges that he killed a New York masseuse he arranged to meet in a Back Bay hotel after seeing her ad on Craigslist.

Law enforcement officials said an autopsy had been performed on Markoff, but the medical examiner withheld the exact cause of death pending specialized testing. The Suffolk District Attorney's office declined further comment.

A spokeswoman for Boston Emergency Medical Services said that when emergency medical technicians arrived at the jail cell, Markoff was lying on the floor, with wounds to his neck and both ankles. A law enforcement official with knowledge of the case has told the Globe that Markoff severed an artery. Two other law enforcement officials told the Globe that he also was found with a plastic bag tied over his head.
The spokeswoman for EMS, Jennifer Mehigan, declined to comment on the bag.

Cabral refused to release any details about how Markoff, 24, killed himself or when he was last seen alive, saying she didn't want to compromise the ongoing investigation. But she said Markoff did not have any prohibited items in his cell when he was found, and that there was no indication at this point that her staff had done anything wrong.

"I don't believe that he had anything that he shouldn't have had in his cell,'' Cabral said during a telephone interview today. "I can tell you generally inmates don't sit naked in their cells with nothing to read and no clothes on.''

Markoff was scheduled to go on trial in March for allegedly killing 25-year-old masseuse Julissa Brisman in April 2009 at a luxurious Back Bay hotel, a woman authorities say he met through the Craigslist website.

Brian McGrory, Shelley Murphy, Jonathan Saltzman, and Andrea Estes of the Globe staff also contributed to this report.

Well,if he had a plastic bag and something sharp enough to cut an artery, than he had items in his cell that he should NOT have had. Again, don't the guards watch what is in someone's cell? Do they do inspections? How could he have gotten these items?

He was extremely high profile and suicidal. They should have had a camera on him 24/7.

This is a very sad case for all the families, as Jeanne said. And, I wonder what "pocket" meant.

Prosecutors have formally dropped the case against Philip Markoff, the man accused of killing a woman he met through Craigslist in 2009.

Markoff committed suicide in a Massachusetts jail last month.

The case against Philip Markoff has officially ended. The paperwork filed one month after Markoff committed suicide inside his jail cell. The so-called Craigslist killer never to stand trial.

"What he did was abhorrent, it was disgraceful and brutal and he would have been held accountable."

District Attorney Dan Conley says the evidence against Markoff was overwhelming. Evidence his office plans to release in the coming weeks so the public will also know. It was April 2009, when Markoff allegedly contacted Julissa Brisman through Craigslist, setting up a meeting at the Marriot Copley Hotel. What apparently began as a robbery, ended in murder.

"We come to court to speak for victims who can't speak for themselves. Today we would like to speak for Julissa Brisman. She was a vibrant young woman, a lot of promise and a full life ahead of her."

The Brisman family plans to speak out for the first time since the murder about the impact this loss has had on their lives. Then 34 other victims of homicide will be remembered during a rededication of the Garden of Peace memorial. Conley says he feels badly that the Brisman family has been robbed of seeing Markoff held accountable in a court of law.

"Sometimes we have to tell people justice is not always in this world. In this case I wish it had been but it's not going to be. It's going to have to wait until the next one."
