An Amber Alert has been issued by Virginia State Police and Roanoke Police for an abducted child that they have reason to fear is in great danger.

Thursday night according to police, three men entered a duplex apartment in the Southeast Roanoke area and kidnapped little two year old Aveion Malik Lewis after knocking out his stepfather leaving him unconscious.

There also was a 4 year old girl there who was bound and restrained before they left with Lewis. Amber alert officials and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children the kidnappers left a note behind with a demand for money.

This morning just before daybreak the Richmond area police department says they were told that a vehicle believed to have been used in taking little Aveion might have been spotted in the area. They reported that the vehicle, a 1990 Chevrolet Blazer  was seen getting off Interstate 295 southbound at the Creighton Road exit in Hanover County.

The three suspected kidnappers have all been described as black males. One is said to be in his late 20’s and is about 6ft. 2 in. tall with a dark complexion with a stocky build and a beard. He was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt, jacket and a scarf. Another was in his late 20’s and is about 5ft. 11 in tall with a light complexion and a muscular upper body with dread locked hair and slanted eyes. He was wearing a red St. Louis Cardinals baseball cap. The third man was said to be 5 ft 11 in tall with a light complexion and thin build with no facial hair and about 23 or 24 years old. He was wearing a black hat with white writing on it. He also was wearing a white shirt and blue jeans.

The two year old baby is described to be black, with a black hair, close cut, and brown eyes. He stands to be about 2 feet tall. He was last seen wearing yellow Sponge Bob Squarepants footie pajamas.

If you have any information as to the whereabouts of Aveion Malik Lewis, please call Roanoke City Police Department at (540) 853-2211 or Virginia State Police at 1 (800) 822-4453.

Let’s keep praying for this child to be found soon. He must be scared not knowing what is going on. I add him to my special prayers for the children that are still missing which include Adji Desir, Haleigh Cummings, Hassani Campbell, Masaraha Ross (who remains missing with her Mom) and Marc Anthony Bookal. I keep praying and will continue to keep praying for these children to be found and brought home to their family that loves them.

God bless the children and all of you that care.

Police Search For Missing Toddler
Published on January 16, 2010

by EU News Network

(EUNewsNet.com and OfficialWire)

ROANOKE, VA

An Amber Alert was issued in Virginia for a toddler allegedly abducted by men who broke into his parents' Roanoke apartment, authorities said.

Aveion Malik Lewis was reported kidnapped Thursday evening, The Roanoke (Va.) Times reported. The boy's stepfather, Brandon Lockett, said someone knocked on the door and hit him when he opened it, knocking him unconscious.

Morgan Lockett said she returned from work to find her husband just coming round and her 4-year-old daughter tied up and gagged in a bedroom. Aveion was missing but two other young children had been left alone.

Someone had gone through the duplex apartment, turning over a sofa, she said. A note had been left telling the couple to pay $10,000.

"I just want my baby back," Morgan Lockett said.

She said Aveion was a premature baby who has had recurrent stomach problems.

Does anyone think that it's strange that the stepfather 'came to' at the exact time that his wife came home? I do.

Notice how the mom's are always at work and the child is alone with the boyfriend or step parent? Very suspicious to me, the whole scenario. Did the husband ask the wife for money and get refused?? Then came up with this plan?? I am very suspicious of the step dad.

Published: January 18, 2010http://www2.timesdispatch.com/rtd/news/local/crime/article/AMBGAT18_20100118-064601/318413/

An Amber Alert remained active today for a 2-year-old boy who was kidnapped last Thursday night in Roanoke.

Richmond-area police were put on the lookout Friday morning for a sport utility vehicle that may have been used in the kidnapping, but as of today, no arrests had been made in the case.

Police said a white, 1990s model Chevrolet Blazer is believed to have been used in the kidnapping of 2-year-old Aveion Malik Lewis.

Authorities said three men went in a Southeast Roanoke apartment, knocked the boy's stepfather unconscious, bound and restrained a 4-year-old girl and took Aveion with them. A note was left demanding money.

Roanoke police said their officers and FBI agents revisited the area Saturday and conducted a door-to-door canvass of the neighborhood.

Amber Alert officials with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children said the three suspects were as black males. One was in his late 20s and was 6 feet, 2 inches tall, with a dark complexion, medium build and was wearing a black sweatshirt, jacket and scarf. Another was in his late 20s and was 5 feet, 11 inches tall with a light complexion, medium to muscular build with dread-locked hair and slanted eyes and was wearing a red St. Louis Cardinals baseball cap. The third was 5 feet, 11 inches tall with a light complexion and thin build and was wearing a black hat with white writing on it, a white shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information can call Virginia State Police at (800) 822-4453 or Roanoke police at (540) 853-2211.

Body of Aveion Malik Lewis found in Landfill/ Aveion's stepfather, Brandon Lockett, and Aveion's mother, Morgan, charged in his death Empty Aveion Malik Lewis, Missing Roanoke Toddler Now Believed Dead. Police Don't Think Child Was Ever Abducted

Missing Roanoke Toddler Now Believed Dead
Police Don't Think Child Was Ever Abducted

January 19, 2010
ROANOKE - Roanoke Police now believe a missing two-year-old may be dead. They are now switching their search for him to a death investigation.

Below is a press release from Roanoke Police with the latest:

On January 14, 2010, the Roanoke Police Department received a report of the abduction of Aveion Malik Lewis from the 2100 block of King Charles Avenue. Since then, the department has investigated the reported abduction and received varying degrees of cooperation from key persons in the investigation; which lead police to question the validity of information received from some individuals.

As a result, investigators began to focus on the possibility that Brandon Lockett, Aveion' step-father was not providing accurate details. Based on conflicting statements given, and significant developments within the last 24 hours, police determined that it was necessary to expand the previous and ongoing ground search. As the search progressed, Police were advised that the reported abduction did not occur. It is with great regret and sadness that the Roanoke Police Department announces that our investigation has moved from an abduction to an investigation into the death of Aveion Malik Lewis. All indications are that Aveion was deceased prior to the 911 call made on January 14. This information has been provided by Brandon Lockett. Unfortunately, police do not yet have a known location of Aveion's body. The expanded ground search, which began this morning will continue in an effort locate Aveion.

Investigators are working to obtain more information surrounding the circumstances of Aveion's death, and those details cannot be released at this time. During this investigation we have received overwhelming support and cooperation from the public, and the Roanoke Police Department thanks everyone for their cooperation. The department asks for the public's continued support, assistance, and cooperation.

This investigation is ongoing, and anyone with additional information regarding this investigation should call the Roanoke Police Department. The department thanks the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Virginia State Police, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and numerous public safety agencies and search teams from across the state and outside Virginia.

Roanoke police have charged the stepfather of Aveion Malik Lewis with child neglect, improper disposal of a human body and obstruction of justice, police said in a news release this afternoon.

Brandon Lockett had told police that on Thursday three men knocked him out and abducted his 2-year-old stepson. On Tuesday, he told police that the child was dead even before he was reported missing.

Police are continuing to search for the toddler's body and have not released information on how Aveion might have died.

Step"father" indeed - they dont deserve to be called human let alone have a title of father. The mothers brother didnt believe this guy either - where is the mother in all this? She knew what happened - why do they cover up for these bastards?

maybe because he was ill treated and not fed is why he had medical problems now. And they gave him back to his torturers - lovely

Body of Aveion Malik Lewis found in Landfill/ Aveion's stepfather, Brandon Lockett, and Aveion's mother, Morgan, charged in his death Empty Brandon Lockett has admitted that he faked the kidnapping story and that Aveion was dead before he called 911.

Post by Nama Thu Jan 21, 2010 1:30 am

Tonight investigators in Virginia are searching for the body of 2-year-old Aveion Lewis. Aveion’s stepfather, Brandon Lockett has admitted that he faked the kidnapping story and that Aveion was dead before he called 911. He remains silent, however, and refuses to tell authorities where Aveion’s body is located. What happened to Aveion Malik Lewis?

Police do not know if Aveion was murdered or if his death was an accident and there are many other questions that need to be answered. Where is Aveion? Did his mother play a role in his death? Were other people involved or did Brandon Lockett act alone or was it an accident? Aveion’s mother, Morgan Lockett has reportedly not been helpful with the investigation.

New information also states that Aveion was in a foster home until April 2009. Was he a previous victim of abuse or neglect? According to Aveion’s aunt, the couple was investigated for child neglect but charges were never filed. Reports also say that when Aveion Lewis was 15 months old, he weighed 8 pounds. It is unclear why Aveion was so underweight.

Now, investigators are racing against time to find Aveion’s body. There is an expected storm to come tomorrow that would greatly hinder the search effort.

It is also likely that law enforcement officers know more information than they have made public due to the fact that they have charged Brandon Lockett with felony child neglect. That charge indicates that Brandon told them something that indicated neglect. The investigation is being conducted as a death investigation and not a homicide.

Brandon Lockett currently faces three charges. These are felony child neglect, obstruction of justice, and improper disposal of a human body.

Body of Aveion Malik Lewis found in Landfill/ Aveion's stepfather, Brandon Lockett, and Aveion's mother, Morgan, charged in his death Empty Re: Body of Aveion Malik Lewis found in Landfill/ Aveion's stepfather, Brandon Lockett, and Aveion's mother, Morgan, charged in his death

Brandon Lockett, 24, is charged with felony child neglect, improper disposal of a human body and obstruction of justice.

Other charges may be considered by the grand jury in February, Roanoke Commonwealth's Attorney Donald Caldwell said.

Police have not released any information on how the boy may have died, and his body had not been found as of Wednesday night.

Neither Caldwell nor Roanoke police Capt. Curtis Davis would explain why Lockett has been charged with child neglect, or whether that led to the toddler's death, because of the ongoing investigation.

"The charges are appropriate for what we have developed at this time," Davis said.

Lockett has been cooperating in some aspects of the investigation but not others, Davis said.

Lockett has a criminal record in Georgia, where he is still on probation for possession of cocaine, according to court documents.

He also has a history of violence.

Court records from Bibb County, Ga., show that in 2006 Lockett was accused of striking Janet Balkcom, the mother of his infant, with a candleholder.

He pleaded guilty to the family violence simple battery charge and was sentenced to one year of probation, according to court records. He was also required to attend a family violence intervention program and pay a fine.

About a month later, Lockett forced his way into Balkcom's home and fought with a man, according to court records. Balkcom called police from a neighbor's house.

Officers noticed a large amount of blood on the floor, and that a table lamp was broken. The victim fled from the house and wasn't seen again.

Lockett pleaded guilty to family violence criminal trespassing in that case.

He served 60 days in jail and then returned to probation.

In two separate instances in Roanoke last year, Lockett was pulled over for speeding and for driving on a learner's permit without a licensed driver. Police also cited him both times for not having a child restraint in the car, according to court records.

Lockett is being held at the Roanoke City Jail without bond.

Another low-standing citizen who was given chance after chance. After the battery charges he should have been barred from being around any children of the mother whether is own or someone elses. He should have been in jail.

Investigators aren’t sure yet just how much Aveion’s mother is involved with this. Her brother, Chris Ward says she hasn’t reached out to her family for support during her son’s disappearance but he would think it would be more like she was scared of Lockett than she would have been involved. “I believe he has my sister scared to say something” he said.

Aveion Lewis, the two-year-old boy who was reported missing on January 14, 2010 and was the subject of an Amber Alert issued is believed to have been murdered. Aveion Lewis’ stepfather is in custody after confessing that Aveion was already deceased when he called 911 and could face charges of homicide in addition to felony child neglect, improper disposal of a human body, and obstruction of justice. Police continue their search for Aveion’s body. On Wednesday, over 60 volunteers combed wooded areas with the assistance of canine cadaver dogs, at this time, Aveion’s body has not been found.

According to police reports, an unsealed search warrant states that Aveion Lewis’ death is attributed to homicide. The search warrant also revealed details of neglect that the two year old suffered.

Aveion Malik Lewis was born with a medical condition called intestinal malrotation. The condition required that Aveion undergo medical surgery to have part of his intestine removed. Due to the medical condition, he was on a strict feeding schedule and required medical attention. When Aveion was 14 months old, he weighed approximately 8 pounds. It was determined that Aveion’s parents were not following medical advice and procedures and that their neglect had resulted in his severe malnutrition. He was placed in foster care and stayed in foster care for 16 months. During that time, Aveion doubled his weight.

The search warrant also revealed that Aveion had suffered burns on his legs that required medical attention, yet he was never seen by a physician. Aveion was taken into foster care on May 5, 2008 and began undergoing supervised visits with a therapist and his parents in December 2008. He was returned to his mother and stepfather on March 31, 2009, though the state of Virginia retained legal custody. On September 19, 2009, custody of Aveion Malik Lewis was transferred back to his mother and stepfather. On January 14, 2010, a little less than four months later, his stepfather would call 911 and report him kidnapped. Now, there is a homicide investigation into the child’s death.

Body of Aveion Malik Lewis found in Landfill/ Aveion's stepfather, Brandon Lockett, and Aveion's mother, Morgan, charged in his death 3950040

James Lewis took his son, Aveion, and daughter, Gabrielle, to family cookouts, and spent time with them at home. But that changed, Lewis said, when the children's mother began dating Brandon Lockett.

"It just seemed like she was shutting me out of my kids' lives," Lewis said Friday, the first time he's spoken publicly since Aveion's death.

Lewis, 23, also talked about his custody battles with Morgan Lockett and the Department of Social Services.

Social Services issued a statement Friday about Aveion's case. Social workers put him in foster care for 16 months after he was found to be severely underweight. He was returned to his home after the Locketts completed classes and other requirements, the news release said.

Police are still searching for the 2-year-old's body. The Locketts reported to police Jan. 14 that Aveion was abducted, but Brandon Lockett later told police that the toddler had died.

Police haven't said how Aveion might have died, but a search warrant said they are investigating the toddler's death as a homicide.

Brandon Lockett has been charged with felony child neglect, improper disposal of a human body and obstruction of justice.

Morgan Lockett has not been charged.

Aveion's case came to Social Services in May 2008, when the boy was 14 months old. The department got a report that Morgan Lockett was neglecting Aveion, and that he was severely underweight.

A search warrant filed this week in Roanoke City Circuit Court said Aveion weighed less than 9 pounds at that time.

Aveion was born with a medical problem that required surgery to remove part of his intestines, according to the warrant. As a result, he had a strict feeding schedule and needed medication.

Two days after Social Services was notified, Aveion was taken into protective custody so he could get the medical treatment he needed, the news release said.

Aveion remained in foster care until March. During that time, Social Services developed a plan for Aveion's mother and stepfather that was approved, and periodically reviewed, by the Roanoke Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

The plan included having Brandon Lockett attend an 18-week program on domestic violence alternatives, which he completed, the news release said.

He and Morgan Lockett also completed a parenting education class.

While in foster care, Aveion doubled in weight, according to the search warrant.

During that time, Lewis said he visited his son and tried to get custody of him.

"I was always worried about him," Lewis said.

In December 2008, Social Services allowed the Locketts to have extended visitations with Aveion at their home.

A clinical in-home therapist spent 20 to 30 hours per month observing the Locketts parenting, reinforcing and teaching good parenting practices, and watching Aveion's adjustment, the news release said.

In March, Aveion was returned home, but Social Services retained legal custody. The in-home therapy continued, and Aveion's social worker made scheduled and unscheduled visits to see that Aveion's medical needs were met.

In September, a judge awarded Morgan Lockett legal custody of Aveion on the recommendation of Social Services, the news release said.

Jane Conlin, director of Social Services in Roanoke, said Friday that the responsibility for what happened to Aveion does not rest with her department.

"The person who is responsible for this is not the social worker," she said. "I think we need to keep in mind that social workers aren't mind readers. We work with the best knowledge and information we have and within the law. Nobody can, with 100 percent accuracy, predict the behavior of another person."

Lewis, however, said he never trusted Brandon Lockett.

"The way Brandon was, it just seemed like he wanted to get to me," Lewis said.

The two would have confrontations during court hearings, and Lewis said that his children's mother's attitude toward him changed after she began dating Lockett.

That's when Lewis said he lost contact with his children.

He recalled several times that he tried to see them, such as on Aveion's first birthday, when he said Morgan Lockett wouldn't answer the door.

Lewis' mother, Briggitte Mason, also said she had to go to court to get visitation rights and, even then, found herself knocking on a door that wouldn't open.

"How many times can you get your heart broke?" Mason said.

Now Lewis, who works at Walmart and at the Roanoke Civic Center, wants custody of his daughter, who is about to turn 4.

She is currently staying with Morgan Lockett's mother, who is also looking after Brandon Lockett's two children, said Cara Ward, Morgan Lockett's sister.

Ward has been busy collecting donated items for the children because no one wants to go back to the Southeast Roanoke home where Aveion was last seen.

The Kirk Family YMCA, Total Action Against Poverty, Babies and Children Inc. and other businesses have donated toys, clothing and other items, Ward said.

She said her family has been touched by the community's support, and she praised Roanoke police for their dedication.

The support, and the family's faith, are keeping them going.

"We believe Aveion is in heaven," she said.

Roanoke Co., VA - Authorities searching a landfill for missing Roanoke toddler Aveion Mark Lewis say they've discovered the body of a small child.

Just like in the case of Morgan Harrington, investigators want to be certain, through the medical examiners office, that the child they have found is, in fact, Aveion.

As we reported Tuesday, crews have been searching the Smith Gap Landfill since Saturday. Around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, they found the body of a young child in a pile of trash that was traced back to the area from which Avieon was last seen alive.

While police are not saying the body is Aveion, Roanoke Police Chief Joe Gaskins did say that this discovery has brought closure for his department and everyone who has searched tirelessly for the young boy.

"This is a measure of closure for all of us. To see that this young person is found and hopefully... that the body is buried appropriately. That is very important to all of us," he said.

Chief Gaskins also made it clear that Aveion's stepfather, Brandon Lockett, has not been cooperating with investigators, especially when it came to telling police where Aveion's body was located.

That's why we have seen more than 200 people looking for Aveion all over Roanoke, in the Roanoke River, and then finally in the Smith Gap Landfill.

When Chief Gaskins was asked about what Lockett has told them, he said Lockett has provided them with all sorts of stories most of which were "fairy tales".

In cases like this, prosecutors almost always need a body in order to file murder charges. We can expect more charges against Lockett in the future.

PRESS RELEASE FROM ROANOKE POLICE:

Roanoke, VA- Since the initial report of the disappearance of Aveion Malik Lewis, the Roanoke Police Department has been committed to locating him. The initial investigation was treated as an abduction. However, due to conflicting information during the initial investigation, investigators identified and located trash collected from the immediate area of the 2100 block of King Charles Avenue. The trash was secured at the Smith Gap Landfill operated by the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority.

Searches of the trash were conducted as the weather permitted. On January 27, search teams made a discovery while searching the trash collected from the immediate area of the 2100 block of King Charles Avenue. The Medical Examiner's Office was contacted, and personnel from that office responded and confirmed the discovery is that of the body of a small child. The child's body has been transported to the Medical Examiner's Office to determine identity and cause of death.

The Roanoke Police Department thanks the community for its overwhelming support during this investigation. Numerous citizens have called providing tips in this investigation and offering to assist in the search for Aveion's body. The Department also thanks the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Roanoke Fire/EMS, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, and numerous local and state public safety agencies for their assistance. The Roanoke Police Department continues to call on citizens to help in this investigation. Anyone with information should call the Department at (540) 853-2212.

Lets see what they charge this bastard with. DCF
always tries to cover their ass - but they put this child back into a situation that was dangerous IMO and
they cant do damn thing to them. How would you like to have a job where you NEVER have to face up to your mistakes or take responsibility - because thats what these social workers have, a no retribution no
responsibility job - and you wonder why there are so many dead and damaged children.

They also need to fire and arrest the DCF workers who allowed this poor sweet little boy back in that home.

Bio dad wanted to see his children once in a while, but evidently didn't want full-time responsibility...or he would have fought hard and probably won custody when Aveion was put in foster care (I'm sorry if I'm being too critical...maybe he did try...IDK). At least he is trying to get his little girl now...I hope that is good...No telling what she has been through with that "Mom" and Step"Dad"...

It is very hard to find a child dumped with trash in a landfill. Even harder to gather important evidence in a landfill. I am grateful he has been found. I don't understand why more and more of this is happening.

A memorial service for Aveion Malik Lewis was cancelled Saturday and was not immediately rescheduled because the medical examiner's office has not released the boy's body, his father said.

"We're trying to make sure that we give him a respectful and proper burial," said Aveion's father, James Lewis. "We want to make sure that everyone from both families can come."

The medical examiner's office announced last week that the body found Jan. 27 in Roanoke County's Smith Gap Regional Landfill was that of 2-year-old Aveion. Also this week, the Roanoke Police Department said they were combing through an e-mail account linked to Aveion's stepfather to confirm who may have been involved in the toddler's death.

Authorities have not announced a cause of death. The investigation began Jan. 14, when the stepfather, Brandon Lockett, reported Aveion had been abducted. Police have said that Lockett has given varying accounts of what may have happened to the toddler. Lockett, 24, has been charged with felony child neglect, improper disposal of a body and obstruction of justice.

Lewis said he did not know when Aveion's body would be released. He said Saturday's memorial service was cancelled because of inclement weather and that he would later announce a new date.
