Plane crashes into Northwest Austin building
A small single-engine plane crashed into a building in Northwest Austin Thursday morning, sparking a fire. The crash happened near MoPac and Highway 183.

Witnesses report feeling a tremble, seeing smoke, and seeing the plane hitting the side of the building. The three-story building, which is next to the Grace Covenent Church, is currently being evacuated.

Several witnesses report still seeing explosions after the plane hit. The plane did not leave a smoke trail before hitting the side of the building, according to one witness.

A witness is saying the fire is spreading from the explosions on the plane.

Plumes of smoke are reportedly visible a mile away from a plane crash in Austin, Texas. KEYE television in Austin cites a witness to the small plane crash as describing a "huge fireball" when the small aircraft hit a 7-story office building. The witness said the plane was flying low before the crash. Amid reports of "walking wounded" at the scene, at least two patients have been taken to the hospital. Fire crews are working to douse flames. There are reports the building is located adjacent to the FBI headquarters in Austin.

The building is being evacuated but people are still trapped on the second floor.

Austin-Travis County EMS Assistant Director James Shamard told The Statesman that "smoke is visible for at least a mile and that paramedics have set up a triage center at the scene."

According to Ian Crawford, a reporter for KUT, NPR's member station in Austin, the crash happened just over an hour ago about 10 or 12 miles north of the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. He says there is no word on casualties.

NPR counterterrorism correspondent Dina Temple-Raston says that, at this stage, there is no indication of terrorism.

Update at 12:06 p.m. ET: A spokesman for the FAA, tracking the incident from Fort Worth, Texas, says that they know it was a single-engine plane. The Agency is trying to contact air traffic controllers in the area.

I am thinking was it an accident or on purpose? Same thing I asked myself when a plane crashed in to the WTC in 2001.

It looks like it was "on purpose".
The pilot set his own house on fire before crashing his plane into the building. I just heard this on CNN HLN.

UPDATE: NTSB official told Fox News that they are investigating Austin, Texas plane crash as an intentional act, and said it appears the pilot set his own house on fire and then got in his plane and flew it into the building. An NTSB spokesman, however, told FoxNews.com that “we can’t confirm any of that.”

The man set his house on fire WITH FAMILY MEMBERS INSIDE!

Austin fire officials say one person's unaccounted for after a small plane crashed into an building that houses offices of the Internal Revenue Service. According to CNN, The pilot of the plane had set his house on fire beforehand, stole the plane and crashed it intentionally, a federal official told CNN.

Assistant Austin Fire Chief Harry Evans says two people have been taken to a hospital, but their conditions aren't known yet.

The Federal Aviation Administration is reporting to CNN that the plane departed Georgetown airport north of Austin about 9:40 a.m. and was a Cirrus SR 22. The pilot evidently did not file a flight plan, according to reports. No flight plan is required because it is a VFR (visual flight rules) day, meaning clear weather.

There was still no information on the number of people in the plane, or on a tail number to confirm the ID of the pilot.

Officials are investigating a possible connection between the plane crash and the explosive fire around 9 a.m. in the house of a Georgetown pilot who has not been located.

Witnesses at the scene say that a single engine plane that appeared to be a Cherokee 140 did not appear to be having any trouble, but hit the building at an angle. No smoke or any sign of trouble was visible.

Thick black and gray smoke was billowing out of the second and third stories of the building today as fire crews using ladder trucks and hoses battled the fire.

Dozens of windows were blown out of the hulking black building and vehicles traveling on a nearby highway paused to look.

Joseph Andrew Stack has been identified as the pilot who crashed into the Austin Government building. Reports are surfacing that prior to taking off, he set his own house on fire, plus he had an ongoing feud with the IRS – the government agency located in the building in which the plane crashed. CNN has reported that the plane was single-engine Cirrus SR22.

An NTSB report indicates that the pilot set his house on fire before taking off. The building he hit contains an IRS office, and a neighboring building contains an FBI office. There is some speculation that this was his intended target.
Initial reports are that the pilot might be Joseph Andrew Stack, a software engineer. His wife Cheryl and his daughter were rescued from the burning home. The pilot might have stolen the plane from Georgetown airport.
Police received to a domestic disturbance call from that Stack home before the fire or the plane theft were reported.
“It was swooping down like it was going to buzz the apartments and then pull back up As soon as he cleared the apartments he just dropped down and we saw this ball of flame as tall or taller as the whole apartment complex itself.

The eyewitness said the plane “was within feet of the top of the apartment complex.”
Another eyewitness said the plane crashed into the building under full power.
Initial reports are that one person in the building is missing and two have been hospitalized.

Editor’s note: We found this note on a Web site being pointed at by social media users. A search showed the domain that the note was posted on is registered to Joe Stack of San Marcos. A man by the same name, who has addresses in both Austin and San Marcos has been linked to today’s airplane crash.
If you’re reading this, you’re no doubt asking yourself, “Why did this have to happen?” The simple truth is that it is complicated and has been coming for a long time. The writing process, started many months ago, was intended to be therapy in the face of the looming realization that there isn’t enough therapy in the world that can fix what is really broken. Needless to say, this rant could fill volumes with example after example if I would let it. I find the process of writing it frustrating, tedious, and probably pointless… especially given my gross inability to gracefully articulate my thoughts in light of the storm raging in my head. Exactly what is therapeutic about that I’m not sure, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
We are all taught as children that without laws there would be no society, only anarchy. Sadly, starting at early ages we in this country have been brainwashed to believe that, in return for our dedication and service, our government stands for justice for all. We are further brainwashed to believe that there is freedom in this place, and that we should be ready to lay our lives down for the noble principals represented by its founding fathers. Remember? One of these was “no taxation without representation”. I have spent the total years of my adulthood unlearning that crap from only a few years of my childhood. These days anyone who really stands up for that principal is promptly labeled a “crackpot”, traitor and worse.
While very few working people would say they haven’t had their fair share of taxes (as can I), in my lifetime I can say with a great degree of certainty that there has never been a politician cast a vote on any matter with the likes of me or my interests in mind. Nor, for that matter, are they the least bit interested in me or anything I have to say.
Why is it that a handful of thugs and plunderers can commit unthinkable atrocities (and in the case of the GM executives, for scores of years) and when it’s time for their gravy train to crash under the weight of their gluttony and overwhelming stupidity, the force of the full federal government has no difficulty coming to their aid within days if not hours? Yet at the same time, the joke we call the American medical system, including the drug and insurance companies, are murdering tens of thousands of people a year and stealing from the corpses and victims they cripple, and this country’s leaders don’t see this as important as bailing out a few of their vile, rich cronies. Yet, the political “representatives” (thieves, liars, and self-serving scumbags is far more accurate) have endless time to sit around for year after year and debate the state of the “terrible health care problem”. It’s clear they see no crisis as long as the dead people don’t get in the way of their corporate profits rolling in.
And justice? You’ve got to be kidding!
How can any rational individual explain that white elephant conundrum in the middle of our tax system and, indeed, our entire legal system? Here we have a system that is, by far, too complicated for the brightest of the master scholars to understand. Yet, it mercilessly “holds accountable” its victims, claiming that they’re responsible for fully complying with laws not even the experts understand. The law “requires” a signature on the bottom of a tax filing; yet no one can say truthfully that they understand what they are signing; if that’s not “duress” than what is. If this is not the measure of a totalitarian regime, nothing is.
How did I get here?
My introduction to the real American nightmare starts back in the early ‘80s. Unfortunately after more than 16 years of school, somewhere along the line I picked up the absurd, pompous notion that I could read and understand plain English. Some friends introduced me to a group of people who were having ‘tax code’ readings and discussions. In particular, zeroed in on a section relating to the wonderful “exemptions” that make institutions like the vulgar, corrupt Catholic Church so incredibly wealthy. We carefully studied the law (with the help of some of the “best”, high-paid, experienced tax lawyers in the business), and then began to do exactly what the “big boys” were doing (except that we weren’t steeling from our congregation or lying to the government about our massive profits in the name of God). We took a great deal of care to make it all visible, following all of the rules, exactly the way the law said it was to be done.
The intent of this exercise and our efforts was to bring about a much-needed re-evaluation of the laws that allow the monsters of organized religion to make such a mockery of people who earn an honest living. However, this is where I learned that there are two “interpretations” for every law; one for the very rich, and one for the rest of us… Oh, and the monsters are the very ones making and enforcing the laws; the inquisition is still alive and well today in this country.
That little lesson in patriotism cost me $40,000+, 10 years of my life, and set my retirement plans back to 0. It made me realize for the first time that I live in a country with an ideology that is based on a total and complete lie. It also made me realize, not only how naive I had been, but also the incredible stupidity of the American public; that they buy, hook, line, and sinker, the crap about their “freedom”… and that they continue to do so with eyes closed in the face of overwhelming evidence and all that keeps happening in front of them.
Before even having to make a shaky recovery from the sting of the first lesson on what justice really means in this country (around 1984 after making my way through engineering school and still another five years of “paying my dues”), I felt I finally had to take a chance of launching my dream of becoming an independent engineer.
On the subjects of engineers and dreams of independence, I should digress somewhat to say that I’m sure that I inherited the fascination for creative problem solving from my father. I realized this at a very young age.
The significance of independence, however, came much later during my early years of college; at the age of 18 or 19 when I was living on my own as student in an apartment in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. My neighbor was an elderly retired woman (80+ seemed ancient to me at that age) who was the widowed wife of a retired steel worker. Her husband had worked all his life in the steel mills of central Pennsylvania with promises from big business and the union that, for his 30 years of service, he would have a pension and medical care to look forward to in his retirement. Instead he was one of the thousands who got nothing because the incompetent mill management and corrupt union (not to mention the government) raided their pension funds and stole their retirement. All she had was social security to live on.
In retrospect, the situation was laughable because here I was living on peanut butter and bread (or Ritz crackers when I could afford to splurge) for months at a time. When I got to know this poor figure and heard her story I felt worse for her plight than for my own (I, after all, I thought I had everything to in front of me). I was genuinely appalled at one point, as we exchanged stories and commiserated with each other over our situations, when she in her grandmotherly fashion tried to convince me that I would be “healthier” eating cat food (like her) rather than trying to get all my substance from peanut butter and bread. I couldn’t quite go there, but the impression was made. I decided that I didn’t trust big business to take care of me, and that I would take responsibility for my own future and myself.
Return to the early ‘80s, and here I was off to a terrifying start as a ‘wet-behind-the-ears’ contract software engineer… and two years later, thanks to the fine backroom, midnight effort by the sleazy executives of Arthur Andersen (the very same folks who later brought us Enron and other such calamities) and an equally sleazy New York Senator (Patrick Moynihan), we saw the passage of 1986 tax reform act with its section 1706.
For you who are unfamiliar, here is the core text of the IRS Section 1706, defining the treatment of workers (such as contract engineers) for tax purposes. (d) EXCEPTION. - This section shall not apply in the case of an individual who pursuant to an arrangement between the taxpayer and another person, provides services for such other person as an engineer, designer, drafter, computer programmer, systems analyst, or other similarly skilled worker engaged in a similar line of work.
(b) EFFECTIVE DATE. - The amendment made by this section shall apply to remuneration paid and services rendered after December 31, 1986.
Note:
· “another person” is the client in the traditional job-shop relationship.
· “taxpayer” is the recruiter, broker, agency, or job shop.
· “individual”, “employee”, or “worker” is you.
Admittedly, you need to read the treatment to understand what it is saying but it’s not very complicated. The bottom line is that they may as well have put my name right in the text of section (d). Moreover, they could only have been more blunt if they would have came out and directly declared me a criminal and non-citizen slave. Twenty years later, I still can’t believe my eyes.
During 1987, I spent close to $5000 of my ‘pocket change’, and at least 1000 hours of my time writing, printing, and mailing to any senator, congressman, governor, or slug that might listen; none did, and they universally treated me as if I was wasting their time. I spent countless hours on the L.A. freeways driving to meetings and any and all of the disorganized professional groups who were attempting to mount a campaign against this atrocity. This, only to discover that our efforts were being easily derailed by a few moles from the brokers who were just beginning to enjoy the windfall from the new declaration of their “freedom”. Oh, and don’t forget, for all of the time I was spending on this, I was loosing income that I couldn’t bill clients.
After months of struggling it had clearly gotten to be a futile exercise. The best we could get for all of our trouble is a pronouncement from an IRS mouthpiece that they weren’t going to enforce that provision (read harass engineers and scientists). This immediately proved to be a lie, and the mere existence of the regulation began to have its impact on my bottom line; this, of course, was the intended effect.
Again, rewind my retirement plans back to 0 and shift them into idle. If I had any sense, I clearly should have left abandoned engineering and never looked back.
Instead I got busy working 100-hour workweeks. Then came the L.A. depression of the early 1990s. Our leaders decided that they didn’t need the all of those extra Air Force bases they had in Southern California, so they were closed; just like that. The result was economic devastation in the region that rivaled the widely publicized Texas S&L fiasco. However, because the government caused it, no one gave a shit about all of the young families who lost their homes or street after street of boarded up houses abandoned to the wealthy loan companies who received government funds to “shore up” their windfall. Again, I lost my retirement.
Years later, after weathering a divorce and the constant struggle trying to build some momentum with my business, I find myself once again beginning to finally pick up some speed. Then came the .COM bust and the 911 nightmare. Our leaders decided that all aircraft were grounded for what seemed like an eternity; and long after that, ‘special’ facilities like San Francisco were on security alert for months. This made access to my customers prohibitively expensive. Ironically, after what they had done the Government came to the aid of the airlines with billions of our tax dollars … as usual they left me to rot and die while they bailed out their rich, incompetent cronies WITH MY MONEY! After these events, there went my business but not quite yet all of my retirement and savings.
By this time, I’m thinking that it might be good for a change. Bye to California, I’ll try Austin for a while. So I moved, only to find out that this is a place with a highly inflated sense of self-importance and where damn little real engineering work is done. I’ve never experienced such a hard time finding work. The rates are 1/3 of what I was earning before the crash, because pay rates here are fixed by the three or four large companies in the area who are in collusion to drive down prices and wages… and this happens because the justice department is all on the take and doesn’t give a f**k about serving anyone or anything but themselves and their rich buddies.
To survive, I was forced to cannibalize my savings and retirement, the last of which was a small IRA. This came in a year with mammoth expenses and not a single dollar of income. I filed no return that year thinking that because I didn’t have any income there was no need. The sleazy government decided that they disagreed. But they didn’t notify me in time for me to launch a legal objection so when I attempted to get a protest filed with the court I was told I was no longer entitled to due process because the time to file ran out. Bend over for another $10,000 helping of justice.
So now we come to the present. After my experience with the CPA world, following the business crash I swore that I’d never enter another accountant’s office again. But here I am with a new marriage and a boatload of undocumented income, not to mention an expensive new business asset, a piano, which I had no idea how to handle. After considerable thought I decided that it would be irresponsible NOT to get professional help; a very big mistake.
When we received the forms back I was very optimistic that they were in order. I had taken all of the years information to Bill Ross, and he came back with results very similar to what I was expecting. Except that he had neglected to include the contents of Sheryl’s unreported income; $12,700 worth of it. To make matters worse, Ross knew all along this was missing and I didn’t have a clue until he pointed it out in the middle of the audit. By that time it had become brutally evident that he was representing himself and not me.
This left me stuck in the middle of this disaster trying to defend transactions that have no relationship to anything tax-related (at least the tax-related transactions were poorly documented). Things I never knew anything about and things my wife had no clue would ever matter to anyone. The end result is… well, just look around.
I remember reading about the stock market crash before the “great” depression and how there were wealthy bankers and businessmen jumping out of windows when they realized they screwed up and lost everything. Isn’t it ironic how far we’ve come in 60 years in this country that they now know how to fix that little economic problem; they just steal from the middle class (who doesn’t have any say in it, elections are a joke) to cover their asses and it’s “business-as-usual”. Now when the wealthy f**k up, the poor get to die for the mistakes… isn’t that a clever, tidy solution.
As government agencies go, the FAA is often justifiably referred to as a tombstone agency, though they are hardly alone. The recent presidential puppet GW Bush and his cronies in their eight years certainly reinforced for all of us that this criticism rings equally true for all of the government. Nothing changes unless there is a body count (unless it is in the interest of the wealthy sows at the government trough). In a government full of hypocrites from top to bottom, life is as cheap as their lies and their self-serving laws.
I know I’m hardly the first one to decide I have had all I can stand. It has always been a myth that people have stopped dying for their freedom in this country, and it isn’t limited to the blacks, and poor immigrants. I know there have been countless before me and there are sure to be as many after. But I also know that by not adding my body to the count, I insure nothing will change. I choose to not keep looking over my shoulder at “big brother” while he strips my carcass, I choose not to ignore what is going on all around me, I choose not to pretend that business as usual won’t continue; I have just had enough.
I can only hope that the numbers quickly get too big to be white washed and ignored that the American zombies wake up and revolt; it will take nothing less. I would only hope that by striking a nerve that stimulates the inevitable double standard, knee-jerk government reaction that results in more stupid draconian restrictions people wake up and begin to see the pompous political thugs and their mindless minions for what they are. Sadly, though I spent my entire life trying to believe it wasn’t so, but violence not only is the answer, it is the only answer. The cruel joke is that the really big chunks of shit at the top have known this all along and have been laughing, at and using this awareness against, fools like me all along.
I saw it written once that the definition of insanity is repeating the same process over and over and expecting the outcome to suddenly be different. I am finally ready to stop this insanity. Well, Mr. Big Brother IRS man, let’s try something different; take my pound of flesh and sleep well.

Stack's daughter reportedly told authorities that her father set the home on fire.

MyFox Austin reported that Austin firefighters responded to a house fire in the 1800 block of Dapplegrey Lane. Upon arrival firefighters say the entire house was engulfed in flames.

Fifty-three-year-old Joseph Andrew Stack III deliberately flew a stolen Piper Cherokee PA-28 into an Austin federal building that housed the local office of the Internal Revenue Service today, according to CNN. So far two people have been reported injured and one missing. Stacks is the only officially reported death so far. Here's what we know so far about him:
1. He is a software engineer.
2. He started off the morning by burning down his own house.
3. He then went to Georgetown Municipal Airport north of Austin at about 9:40 a.m. and took off in the Piper. He did not file a flight plan because the weather was clear enough for one not to be required.
4. He quickly directed his plane at a seven-story office building at 9430 Research Boulevard in northwest Austin, where, among other companies, about 200 employees of the Internal Revenue Service work.
5. He was mad at the IRS, and left what CNN reports was a suicide note on a local website, detailing his trials with the agency. In fact, a lot of his rhetoric could have been taken directly from a handwritten sign at a tea party rally. For example:

The note, which is about six pages of text when printed, begins: “If you’re reading this, you’re no doubt asking yourself, ‘Why did this have to happen?’”
What follows is a rambling complaint about the tax system, how it affects organized religion and corporations, and how at several turns it has derailed Stack’s professional career as a software engineer.

At one point, the note says, Stack failed to file a tax return because he had no income. “The sleazy government decided they disagreed,” the note says. “Bend over for another $10,000 helping of justice.”
The note says that recently Stack was audited after a tax preparer neglected to report some of “Sheryl’s” unreported income.
“That left me … trying to defend transactions that have no relationship to anything tax related,” the note says. “The end result is… well, just look around.”
The note then says that the Federal Aviation Administration is often justifiably called a tombstone agency, calls President George W. Bush a “puppet,” and said “nothing changes unless there is a body count.”
“I choose to not keep looking over my shoulder at ‘big brother”’ while he strips my carcass, I choose not to ignore what is going on all around me, I choose not to pretend that business as usual won’t continue; I have just had enough.”
Website coding on the page where Stack’s manifesto was published showed that he created the page on February 16th, at 7:24 p.m. He revised the 2676-word manifesto 27 times. Between the time he created it on Tuesday and when it was last saved, at 6:42 a.m. on Thursday.
According to IRS bankruptcy court records, Stack was employed by DAC International, an Austin company on McNeil Drive that sells avionics technology.
In March 2009, Stack was owed two days back pay, accrued vacation, and money from an employer savings match plan, according to the court records.
A woman who answered the phone at DAC confirmed Stack was an employee but said she had no comment before hanging up the phone.

Man angry at IRS crashes plane into building

AUSTIN, Texas – A software engineer furious with the Internal Revenue Service launched a suicide attack on the agency Thursday by crashing his small plane into an office building containing nearly 200 IRS employees, setting off a raging fire that sent workers running for their lives.

Emergency crews recovered two bodies from the wreckage. The pilot was presumed dead and one worker in the building had been missing. Austin Fire Department Battalion Chief Palmer Buck declined to discuss the identities of those found, but said Thursday night that authorities had "accounted for everybody."

The FBI tentatively identified the pilot as A. Joseph Stack III, 53. Law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still going on, said that before taking off, Stack apparently set fire to his house and posted a long anti-government screed on the Web. It was dated Thursday and signed "Joe Stack (1956-2010)."

In it, the author cited run-ins he had with the IRS and ranted about the tax agency, government bailouts and corporate America's "thugs and plunderers."

"I have had all I can stand," he wrote, adding: "I choose not to keep looking over my shoulder at `big brother' while he strips my carcass."

The pilot took off in a four-seat, single engineer Piper PA-28 from an airport in Georgetown, about 30 miles from Austin, without filing a flight plan. He flew low over the Austin skyline before plowing into the side of the hulking, seven-story, black-glass building just before 10 a.m. with a thunderous explosion that instantly stirred memories of Sept. 11.

Flames shot from the building, windows exploded, a huge pillar of black smoke rose over the city, and terrified workers rushed to get out.

The Pentagon scrambled two F-16 fighter jets from Houston to patrol the skies over the burning building before it became clear that it was the act of a lone pilot, and President Barack Obama was briefed.

"It felt like a bomb blew off," said Peggy Walker, an IRS revenue officer who was sitting at her desk. "The ceiling caved in and windows blew in. We got up and ran."

At least 13 people were injured, with two reported in critical condition. About 190 IRS employees work in the building.

Gerry Cullen was eating breakfast at a restaurant across the street when the plane struck the building and "vanished in a fireball."

Matt Farney, who was in the parking lot of a nearby Home Depot, said he saw a low-flying plane near some apartments just before it crashed. "I figured he was going to buzz the apartments or he was showing off," Farney said. "It was insane. It didn't look like he was out of control or anything."

Sitting at her desk in another building a half-mile from the crash, Michelle Santibanez felt the vibrations and ran to the windows, where she and her co-workers witnessed a scene that reminded them of 9/11.

"It was the same kind of scenario, with window panels falling out and desks falling out and paperwork flying," said Santibanez, an accountant.

The building, in a heavily congested section of Austin, was still smoldering six hours later, with the worst of the damage on the second and third floors.

The entire outside of the second floor was gone on the side of the building where the plane hit. Support beams were bent inward. Venetian blinds dangled from blown-out windows, and large sections of the exterior were blackened with soot. It was not immediately clear if any tax records were destroyed.

Andrew Jacobson, an IRS revenue officer who was on the second floor when the plane hit with a "big whoomp" and then a second explosion, said about six people couldn't use the stairwell because of smoke and debris. He found a metal bar to break a window so the group could crawl out onto a concrete ledge, where they were rescued by firefighters. His bloody hands were bandaged.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said "heroic actions" by federal employees may explain why the death toll was so low.

The FBI was investigating. The National Transportation Safety Board sent an investigator as well.

Rep. Michael McCaul, a Republican from Austin on the Homeland Security Committee, said the panel will take up the issue of how to better protect buildings from attacks with planes.

In the long, rambling, self-described "rant" that Stack apparently posted on the Internet, he began: "If you're reading this, you're no doubt asking yourself, `Why did this have to happen?'"

He recounted his financial reverses, his difficulty finding work in Austin, and at least two clashes with the IRS, one of them after he filed no return because, he said, he had no income, the other after he failed to report his wife Sheryl's income.

He railed against politicians, the Catholic Church, the "unthinkable atrocities" committed by big business, and the government bailouts that followed. He said he slowly came to the conclusion that "violence not only is the answer, it is the only answer."

"I saw it written once that the definition of insanity is repeating the same process over and over and expecting the outcome to suddenly be different. I am finally ready to stop this insanity. Well, Mr. Big Brother IRS man, let's try something different; take my pound of flesh and sleep well," he wrote.

According to California state records, Stack had a troubled business history, twice starting software companies in California that ultimately were suspended by the state's tax board, one in 2000, the other in 2004. Also, his first wife filed for bankruptcy in 1999, listing a debt to the IRS of nearly $126,000.

The blaze at Stack's home, a red-brick house on a tree-lined street in a middle-class neighborhood six miles from the crash site, caved in the roof and blew out the windows.

Elbert Hutchins, who lives one house away, said the house caught fire about 9:15 a.m. He said a woman and her daughter drove up to the house before firefighters arrived.

"They both were very, very distraught," said Hutchins, a retiree who said he didn't know the family well. "'That's our house!' they cried. `That's our house!'"

Red Cross spokeswoman Marty McKellips said the agency was treating two people who live in the house and that the family had no comment Thursday. McKellips said the family would "give information and answer questions" on Friday.

Thursday was not the first time a tax protester went after an Austin IRS building. In 1995, Charles Ray Polk plotted to bomb the IRS Austin Service Center. He was released from prison in October of last year.

The tax protest movement has a long history in the U.S. and was a strong component of anti-government sentiments that surged during the 1990s. Anti-tax protesters typically believe that they do not have to pay income taxes. Some have been convicted in recent years for targeting IRS officials for harassment and even murder.

Pam Parker says, the software engineer–Joseph Stack–who plowed his small plane into an office building on Thursday, was an ex-member of band “Billy Eli”. Pam Parker is the wife of the leading singer of Billy Eli band Stacked. She told that he used to talk about politics like everyone and he never showed any obsession. There were 200 federal employees presented in the building at that time.
There are reports which say that on yesterday before the crash, Stack blasted the politicians and IRS on a web posting and declared that only violence was the answer of that. Parker further reported that he was a married person who had a full-time job. About one-and-half-year ago, he stopped playing with the band.
Parker said of the Web post, it “sounded like his (Stack’s) voice, but it was nothing I ever heard him say.” She added, “Clearly there was crazy in him but it must have been way in the back of his head, it wasn’t who Joe was.”
In his diary which he wrote before crash, Joseph Stack showed his anger at the IRS who works for the benefits of large corporations and not for average Americans. According to the records of California Secretary of State Records, for two times, Stack tried to started his own software business but each time State’s Franchise Tax Board suspended it.

It scares me too! My youngest daughter lives in Austin. She wasn't anywhere near the IRS building but until I talked to her I was shaking and saying prayers she was alright.

I fear a portion of what this man wrote is very true. He won't be the last person to commit such an act. We live in a frightening time, and it gets more frightening every day.

Joe Clerico remembers Andrew Joseph Stack III as just "Andy," a quiet, nerdy classmate at Milton Hershey School.
"He was an average person. Didn't show any signs of craziness," said Clerico, 53, a security-systems installer who lives on Fourth Street in Lancaster.
"He's world history now."
Bob Hawley remembers Stack's high intelligence and occasional habit of "accumulating a lot of wrongs" before reaching a point at which he would explode.
That was in 1974, when the three were classmates at what was then an all-boys school for orphans.
On Thursday, a far more disturbing portrait of Stack emerged — that of a deranged, frustrated man who held a deep mistrust of government and a particular grudge against the Internal Revenue Service.
Stack committed suicide by slamming his single-engine Piper PA-28 plane into an Austin, Texas, office building that houses the IRS, stunning those who knew him years ago in the 150-some-member Class of 1974 at Hershey. Also killed was an IRS worker.
"I just couldn't believe it," said Clerico. "It took a little while for me to put it together."
Stack was furious with the federal government — especially its tax code — because he believed it robbed him of his savings and destroyed his career while allowing corrupt executives to walk away with millions, according to his 3,000-word manifesto posted online.
Hawley, who lived in the same common housing unit with Stack during their years at Hershey, described his former classmate as "very intense."
"He was very tightly wound. He definitely had a temper, but not in a way that would suggest there was something that should have been done that wasn't done," said Hawley, a 1979 graduate of Lebanon Valley College who now lives in Alabama.
"He wasn't a raving maniac. He was a guy with a temper. He tended to accumulate a lot of wrongs. He would get to a certain point and explode," Hawley said. "He always had an us-versus-them mentality, but not unfriendly. Very smart. Very intelligent. A good musician."
Hawley, who played in the school's jazz band with Stack, said he was shocked and saddened by his former classmate's actions.
"I don't believe he was evil," Hawley said. "He was just terribly misguided."
Former classmate Bill Mottin told The Patriot-News in Harrisburg, where Stack lived while attending Harrisburg Area Community College, that Stack was "always a little off and unsteady."
"He also had a hair-trigger temper. Plus, he had a brilliant mind. Combined, they were a highly volatile cocktail just waiting to explode," Mottin, of Sewell, N.J., wrote to The Patriot-News.
Phil Day, another former classmate, told the newspaper that he had noticed in Stack a pent-up anger and a determination to remain separate from his peers.
"He was a part of the group, but he wasn't the party kind of guy," Day told The Patriot-News. "He wasn't the type that wanted to get together with his buddies. He was off on his own."
After his years in Harrisburg, Stack married and moved to California. He had a daughter, who married a Norwegian pilot; Stack went to Norway to visit her and his grandchildren each year.
"He was a good man. Frustrated with the IRS, yes, but a good man," Stack's former wife, Ginger Stack, told the Los Angeles Times from her home in Hemet, Calif. "I'm in shock right now. He had good values. He really did."
Stack, a 53-year-old contract software engineer, wrote that he spent months on the six-page diatribe in hopes that it would be therapeutic.
Instead, "there isn't enough therapy in the world that can fix what is really broken," Stack wrote. He lamented that he couldn't "gracefully articulate my thoughts in light of the storm raging in my head."
The letter is dated Thursday, with the years he lived: 1956-2010.

Joe Stack may have removed seats from the plane he flew into an Austin, Texas, office building to make room for extra fuel.

A law enforcement official speaking on condition of anonymity told CNN that several seats were missing from Stack's Piper Cherokee, and a fuel drum was also missing at Georgetown Municipal Airport.

"I think there is a good chance he might have put it on his plane," the official said.

Stack reportedly set fire to his home before embarking on his mission to attack the office building, which houses offices of the Internal Revenue Service, against which Stack held a decades-long grievance.

Two people died and two others were hospitalized with injuries sustained during the attack.

So very sad that another innocent life has been taken. He seemed to realize the IRS is an agency of the government, but those who work for the agency were simply doing their jobs. How sad when the mind becomes so distorted that it cannot separate an agency from the people who work for it. Same mind set as a person who kills a law enforcement officer, judge, jury member, etc. because he/she hates the law. Could this man have been helped? Apparently he was able to disguise his rage from those closest to him. I never could understand the man who bombed the federal building OK. but now I am thinking he was another who targeted an agency, a building, out of a twisted sense that somehow he was making his point with whom ever he had issues. I fear we will see more and more of this sort of thing. Too many have rage toward government agencies and as our economy goes further south I feel these events will happen again and again.

An accountant says the pilot who crashed his plane into a building that housed an Internal Revenue Service office failed to disclose all of his income, prompting an audit by the agency.
Bill Ross said in a statement sent Saturday to The Associated Press that Andrew Joseph Stack III contacted his firm in 2008 for help with his personal taxes. But Stack failed to provide him with all his income and other information, triggering the audit.
Ross said Stack ignored the audit and his advice. He said his firm dropped Stack as client and has not been in contact with him since October 2009. He declined further comment.

Joe Stack's adult daughter, Samantha Bell, spoke to ABC's "Good Morning America" from her home in Norway. Asked during a phone interview broadcast Monday if she considered her father a hero, she said: "Yes. Because now maybe people will listen."

Authorities say Stack, 53, targeted the IRS office building in Austin on Thursday, killing employee Vernon Hunter and himself, after posting a ranting manifesto against the agency and the government. He apparently set fire to his home before flying his plane into the office building.

Hunter's son, Ken Hunter, said he's alarmed by comments that the pilot was a hero.

"How can you call someone a hero who after he burns down his house, he gets into his plane ... and flies it into a building to kill people?" Hunter told ABC." "My dad Vernon did two tours of duty in Vietnam. My dad's a hero."

Bell said she offered her deepest condolences to Hunter's family. She said her father's last actions were wrong.

"But if nobody comes out and speaks up on behalf of injustice, then nothing will ever be accomplished," she told ABC. "But I do not agree with his last action with what he did. But I do agree about the government,"

No, Laga. Because I live very close to that area and you never think something like this is going to happen in your back yard.

Austin is the Capitol and many who file w/the IRS deal with this office. Not just people in Texas. This building was all IRS and CIA. It shocked me that this man IMHO did a mini 911. He didn't give a tinker's damn about anything - who he hurt..not even his own family. He didn't care if he killed or maimed for life INNOCENT people that have a family, children, friends..a LIFE!

It is NOW shocking me that his daughter is saying her father was a "Hero".

There is absolutely NOTHING heroic about what Stack did. NOTHING! Blog, talk, write a book, bark at the moon, but DON'T take out innocent people just because of frustrations.

Laga, thanks..it really didn't affect me adversely for long. I was not in town at the time. It just shocked me (as I said earlier) that it happened in Austin. (It shouldn't have).

Top Internal Revenue Service administrators, in Austin on Monday to meet with employees after an attack on their office, said workers vowed to carry on despite what one of the officials called a "senseless act."

"People are angry this happened, sad to lose a colleague, but mostly I think people have a great resolve that they serve this country every day," said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. "They do hard work on behalf of the American citizens, and an act like this won't stop us from doing our jobs with dignity and respect for Americans."

The comments came four days after a man disgruntled at the U.S. tax system flew his single-engine plane into a four-story building that houses IRS offices, killing himself and an agency employee.

Officials with the Travis County medical examiner's office said Monday that they had positively identified the pilot as Andrew Joseph Stack III.

Sarah Scott, chief administrative officer for the office, said Stack died of blunt force injuries and that the manner of death was suicide. Vernon Hunter, 68, who was in the building and was killed, died of "conflagration injuries," and his manner of death was homicide, Scott said.

Authorities have said that before plowing his plane into the building, Stack, 53, set his North Austin home ablaze. He also left behind a lengthy Internet message, blaming many of his troubles on the U.S. tax system and the IRS.

During a news conference at the crash scene, U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said he had thanked IRS employees at the meeting for their service and read aloud a letter of support from President Barack Obama .

"I think all Americans owe them their support and their encouragement at this time of tragedy," Geithner said.

FBI officials said Monday that they are still trying to learn as much as they can about Stack and what happened in the days before the crash. They declined to comment further.

FBI spokesman Erik Vasys said the agency's investigation is continuing and that investigators have finished gathering evidence from the building. The structure has been released to its owners, he said.

"We are just now able to let engineers into the building who will determine the condition," said Kevin Kimball , manager of KVA Inc., the building's leasing and management company. "I expect it will be a long time before anyone other than workmen will be able to enter the building."

Fredric Ritter , an engineer who worked on the building's structural design in the early 1980s, said even though the crash didn't bring down the building, it may have been badly damaged. The extent of the damage would depend on how long and intensely the fire burned, he said.

"The heat would have been the thing that would cause the problem," Ritter said. At hot enough temperatures, he said, steel can melt and collapse a building.

In an interview with ABC News that aired Monday, Stack's daughter, Samantha Bell, said her father's final actions were wrong, but she praised his anti-government stance.

When asked if she thought Stack was a hero, she said, "yes, because maybe now people will listen," but later backed off that statement and said Hunter was the only hero in the attack.

"His last actions, the suicide, the catastrophe that caused injuries and death, that was wrong," Bell said in an interview with the network. "But if nobody comes out and speaks up on behalf of injustice, then nothing will ever be accomplished. But I do not agree with his last action, with what he did."

Bell told ABC that she lives in Norway because she lost her job while pregnant in the United States and that Medicaid "would not take care of her."

Bell criticized the American tax system as "very faulty," and said she hopes "everything" will change because of her father's attack.

"But Rome was not built in one day," she said. "But one small step at a time."

Do people in the media ever listen to themselves?

We have a person who, aside from being a murderer, feels he's being unjustly treated by the taxman. And that person, who considers his woes so unbearable that he's willing to take human life, has at least one personal aircraft. I know what you're thinking: The poor man. It's like something out of Steinbeck.

A little surfing around the internet suggests that one could buy a used Piper Cherokee plane, like Stack's, for something in the neighborhood of $100,000 to $170,000, depending on how old the plane is and some other factors. So Stack, persecuted victim of the IRS, owned a pleasure craft whose resale value was either two or three times the national median income. What has this country come to?

This is what our national discourse, our national sense of what's normal, has come to: a man so rich that he can spend two or three years of average-middle-class income on a toy still feels entitled to talk about himself as an economic victim, and that part actually seems normal to people. Republican Congressmen, people in elected office, can say, yes, it's wrong what he did but the IRS really is a problem.

It's laughable. Or it should be. But people actually base successful political campaigns and real policies and actual legislation on this nonsense. Because let's face it: a lot of the people complaining most bitterly about taxation in our public forums, the people screaming about Big Government even as the effective tax rate on the rich stays at rock-bottom lows: those are almost all Guys with Planes. Sometimes it's actually a plane. Sometimes it's a boat. Sometimes it's a summer house, or a ski lodge. Sometimes it's a boat and a ski lodge and a Jaguar and a Vicodin addiction and love nest somewhere. You know what these people call themselves?

Regular guys. Average joes. Victims. "The middle class."

It would be funny if it weren't so ugly and so mean. You know who the real privileged in America are, according to these people? Mothers receiving food stamps. Illegal immigrants busing tables for half of minimum wage. The unemployed. According to the Guys with Planes, these people are not being punished enough, so the thing to do is cut off the food stamps, kick penniless immigrants out of the emergency rooms, and cut the capital gains tax.

Conservatives have been complaining for years about the culture of victimhood. And they're right. It's ugly. Anytime they want to drop the victim act is good with me. You can put the sense of entitlement next to it.

I'm tired of being poor-mouthed by guys with their own planes. Suck it up, fellas. Things are tough all over.

The widow of an Internal Revenue Service employee killed when a disgruntled taxpayer flew his plane into a seven-story building in Austin, Texas, last week is suing the pilot's wife, according to court documents.
Valerie Hunter, the wife of Vernon Hunter, is accusing Sheryl Stack, wife of Andrew Joseph "Joe" Stack III, of negligence, alleging she she knew or should have known that her husband was a threat to others and, thus, could have prevented the attack, according to the lawsuit filed Monday in Travis County District Court.
"Stack was threatened enough by Joseph Stack that she took her daughter and stayed at a hotel the night before the plane crash. [She] owed a duty to exercise reasonable care to avoid a foreseeable risk of injury to others including [Vernon Hunter]," the suit says.
The lawsuit also seeks to bar the release of Vernon Hunter's autopsy report, saying that, if made public, it would cause Hunter's family to suffer "severe and irreparable emotional distress."
Hunter was killed February 18 when, authorities say, Stack flew his Piper Cherokee PA-28 into a northwest Austin building that housed nearly 200 IRS employees.
Authorities say Stack set fire to his $230,000 home in Austin before embarking on his fatal flight.
Police have said Sheryl Stack spent the previous night in an Austin-area hotel but did not say why. Police said they had received no calls of domestic violence from the house. The only calls to police were made a couple of years ago and concerned barking dogs, officials said said.
A 3,000-word message on a Web site registered to Stack railed against the government, particularly the IRS.
"I saw it written once that the definition of insanity is repeating the same process over and over and expecting the outcome to suddenly be different," the online message said. "I am finally ready to stop this insanity. Well, Mr. Big Brother IRS man, let's try something different; take my pound of flesh and sleep well."
Sheryl Stack issued a statement after the attack expressing "sincere sympathy to the victims and their families."

I do NOT think the widow will win the lawsuit.

How could Mrs. Stack have known what her husband would do? I would think she would have immediately alerted the authorities if her husband was threatening to drive his plain into the Austin IRS building.

Strange how some don't ever recognize how very much they have been blessed in life----had he given thanks for those kids, their health, his prosperity, he would never have done such a callous, stupid, murderous, insane thing. Too bad he never realized what was really important in life.
