Infant Boy Slammed To Ground, Killed; Father Charged

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man will face murder charges after police said he slammed his infant son down on the ground several times, killing him.

It happened Tuesday at about 9:45 p.m. during a domestic dispute in the 1100 block of East 16th Avenue, 10TV's Maureen Kocot reported.

"The young man involved in the domestic dispute ended up grabbing the young child and during the course of the dispute, according to witness statements, he threw the young child to the ground," said Columbus police Det. James Day.

Witnesses said that after Quindell Sherman, 20, slammed his 3-month-old son on the ground he grabbed the child and ran down the street, police said.

Officers apprehended Sherman about a block away, where he was found hiding in a trash can, Kocot reported.

The boy was found with Sherman and transported to Nationwide Children's Hospital, where he later died of his injuries, investigators said.

A neighbor, who asked not to be identified, said she wishes she could forget what happened.

"When I looked around I saw him grab the baby, probably for the second time, and toss the baby on the pavers over there on the road," she said. "Head first and then dangle the baby with one arm in the air."

In January, when the baby's mother was still expecting, she told police Sherman pushed her down, struck her, and spit on her.

No charges were filed because the mother was not injured, and she admitted she struck Sherman as well, Kocot reported.

The child's identity was not immediately released by police.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man accused of slamming his infant son on the ground several times and killing him was ordered held on $2.5 million bond on Thursday.

Witnesses said that Quindell Sherman slammed his 3-month-old son Jayden Sherman on the ground and then grabbed the child and ran down East 16th Avenue on Tuesday night, 10TV's Shayla Reaves reported.

Police said the incident happened during a domestic dispute between Sherman, 20, and the baby's mother.

"Everyone is dealing with it the best way they can. With God and prayers we will make it through it," said the baby's uncle, Jermaine Mitchell. "At some point once (the baby's mother) feels ready and the family feels ready there will be a statement made concerning the situation."

Sherman was arrested Tuesday night after he was found hiding in a trash can about a block away.

The infant was found with Sherman and transported to Nationwide Children's Hospital, where he later died of his injuries, investigators said.

Police: Thrown-down Ohio baby Dragged Like Doll

Posted: 4:29 pm EST November 18, 2010
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Police who've charged a Columbus man with fatally throwing his baby son down on the ground said the infant also was dragged down the street "like a rag doll."

The Columbus Dispatch reports that detail is in a police report prepared for a court where 20-year-old Quindell Sherman appeared Thursday on a murder charge.

A Franklin County judge in Columbus set bond at $2.5 million. A court clerk says Sherman did not enter a plea and says he does not have an attorney listed.

Detectives say Sherman slammed the 3-month-old infant down several times Tuesday night amid a dispute with the boy's mother outside the woman's home.

The police report says the child at one point was flung 25 feet into the middle of the street. The baby was pronounced dead at a hospital.

I don't know what to say anymore. I have the sickest feeling not only in my stomach but all over. This week has been too much and to top it off, we read this.
I wish one of the witnesses would have grabbed that 'father' and done the same thing to him but much slower before anyone called the cops and I actually mean it.

Poor little baby! What on earth possesses these "men" to so viciously attack a helpless child? Isn't there any way that a psychological assessment can be made on potential fathers (and mothers) to make sure that they have a "sound mind" before they are allowed near their child? Just because they were involved in the creation of this child, doesn't give them the right to abuse & murder their child!!

I honestly believe that no young parent should be allowed to leave the hospital with their child until they have undergone some type of counselling on how to be a good parent. I don't know if that would have helped in this situation, but it may have. It just seems like there are so many young men (who are really big kids) becoming fathers & not having a clue how to be one! So very sad... crying

soap box In cases like this an eye for an eye is the only justice that seems appropriate. States keep cutting the budget at our department of human services every day. Doing that takes away some of the safety nets that could be put in place to screen and follow up with at risk families.

Quindell Sherman told Columbus police that he threw his 3-month-old son only once.

But the child's fatal injuries and witnesses tell a different story, according to a report prepared by police for Sherman's initial appearance yesterday in Franklin County Municipal Court.

The 20-year-old father repeatedly threw his baby onto the pavement outside a South Linden home Tuesday night, police said.

According to the investigation, Sherman threw the baby, Jayden Mitchell, onto a concrete landing outside 1121 E. 16th Ave. during a fight with the child's mother, Sonia Mitchell, about 9:45 p.m.

After punching the mother and the child's great-grandmother, Carolynne Holmes, Sherman picked up the baby from the landing and flung him an estimated 25 feet, into the middle of E. 16th Avenue. Sherman then ran into the street, grabbed the infant by an arm and "dragged him down the street like a rag doll," police reported.

Sherman then "ran into an alley north of 16th Avenue, turned around facing the house ... held the infant high above his head and slammed the baby into the ground."

He grabbed the baby again, ran to E. 17th Avenue and hid in a trash bin, where officers said they found him standing on the child.

Not to mention the witnesses that came forward after the baby was almost dead. It should be a crime to witness a baby being slammed to the concrete and not do something.

And you are exactly right, LM. How could anyone stand by, watch this and do nothing??

This poor excuse for a "man" is 20 years old. I imagine he never knew kindness or caring. I imagine his world revolves around himself only, and any woman who would get so mixed up with a man like this and have a child with him is just as guilty as he is. These people had only known each other less than a year. You do the math. What can the law do about the mother? Something should be done.

I had just turned 19 when I had my son. I knew exactly what to do to care for him. Part of it was instinct.

It's quite evident that this 20 year old kid did NOT want a child. He should have stayed out of the child's life and been honest about it instead of what he did. There is NO excuse for his actions.

Quindell Sherman Claims He Threw His Son “Only Once”
Posted on November 19th, 2010 - By Bossip Staff

We wanted to update you on the horrific story about the young Ohio father who killed his infant son by throwing him against the pavement.

Quindell Sherman told Columbus police that he threw his 3-month-old son only once.

But the child’s fatal injuries and witnesses tell a different story, according to a report prepared by police for Sherman’s initial appearance yesterday in Franklin County Municipal Court.

The 20-year-old father repeatedly threw his baby onto the pavement outside a South Linden home Tuesday night, police said.

Judge Paul M. Herbert set bail at $2.5 million in a brief hearing in which Sherman, who is charged with murder, did not speak.

Police provided a graphic account of the allegations in a report that was reviewed by the judge but not read in court.

According to the investigation, Sherman threw the baby, Jayden Mitchell, onto a concrete landing outside 1121 E. 16th Ave. during a fight with the child’s mother, Sonia Mitchell, about 9:45 p.m.

After punching the mother and the child’s great-grandmother, Carolynne Holmes, Sherman picked up the baby from the landing and flung him an estimated 25 feet, into the middle of E. 16th Avenue. Sherman then ran into the street, grabbed the infant by an arm and “dragged him down the street like a rag doll,” police reported.

Sherman then “ran into an alley north of 16th Avenue, turned around facing the house … held the infant high above his head and slammed the baby into the ground.”

He grabbed the baby again, ran to E. 17th Avenue and hid in a trash bin, where officers said they found him standing on the child.

Officers attempted to resuscitate the boy, who was pronounced dead at Nationwide Children’s Hospital at 10:39 p.m.

Death was caused by “multiple injuries to the head, chest and abdomen,” Coroner Jan Gorniak ruled after an autopsy Wednesday.

Police said the father told homicide detectives that “he only threw his infant son into the air one time.”

Sherman, who had no adult criminal record, appeared in court wearing a green “suicide vest,” typically placed on high-profile jail inmates who might try to harm themselves. He is being held in protective isolation at the Franklin County jail.

Sonia Mitchell, 20, was among the family members who attended the hearing. She declined to comment on the case afterward.

Her uncle Jermaine Mitchell thanked “everyone for their concerns and prayers for our family at this time.”

He said the family “is dealing with it the best they can. With God and prayers, we’ll make it through.”

SMH (not sure what SMH means ~wrap~)at that suicide vest… He isn’t going to need to do anything to himself once the other inmates hear why he’s in there.

Here’s a photo of the child’s mother:

The family of a 3-month-old baby who died after allegedly being slammed on the ground by his father spoke out about the crime on Monday.

Jayden's mother preferred not to speak publicly but other relatives spoke on her behalf, saying they are still grieving but they are not angry, Mallett reported.

"In order for us to be able to move on, the one thing we need to be able to do is to forgive, definitely not forget, but to forgive the actions and the events that took place so we're not stuck in time," said the baby's great uncle, Jermaine Mitchell.

Mitchell, and his wife Patricia Mitchell, said they have no desire to speak to Sherman but the baby's great grandfather said he does.

"I would like to talk to him just to see what caused him (to do this) and to see if he even knows himself," said the baby's great grandfather Johnny Mitchell.

The Mitchell's said their family has reached out to Quindell Sherman's mother and both sides of the baby's family will be present in a private memorial service that is still being planned.

"We are a family and will remain one regardless of what happens," Jermaine Mitchell said.

OMG no way! I could barely read about what he did to that poor little baby and in NO way could I forgive him!
I am probably TOO much of a forgiving person and I don't hold grudges but maybe once in while but if anyone I knew did this? Oh no, no way no forgiveness!
I understand that in time (and I mean way down the road) that one needs to be able to forgive to move on but right after this horrific act? NO WAY.

I agree, Raine - it would be very difficult to forgive someone who did this to a helpless baby. The only comfort I can find is that this sweet little boy probably went to heaven immediately... no suffering. I just hope that this young "punk" who did this to him (I hate to call him a "father") experiences some of the suffering that this baby went through!! frying pan

An Ohio man has been sentenced to serve 25 years to life in prison in the aggravated murder of his infant son, who authorities say was thrown repeatedly to the concrete and dragged along the street.

During his sentencing hearing Tuesday in Franklin County, 20-year-old Quindell Sherman of Columbus apologized for killing 3-month-old Jayden Mitchell in November. He told the judge, "as a result of my actions, I won't have the chance to be his father."

Police have said the child was at one point flung 25 feet into the middle of the street during a dispute between Sherman and the baby's mother. Authorities say Sherman then hid in a trash bin, standing on the boy.

Sherman pleaded guilty in March in a deal with prosecutors to avoid a possible death sentence.

I hope that the inmates find out what this monster did and take care of him as slowly and w/ as much torture as possible until he's dead. He's a POS scum bag. moo.

Quindell Sherman is sorry he killed his son? Oh, well, I guess that's the story he thought might get him a lighter sentence? I'm sorry he killed his son, but he's not.

I remember the night my son-in-law came home and told me about this horrific incident. He works in Columbus and he was horrified about this story.

We used to live in Columbus and I can tell you that the majority of the people who live in that particular area (16th Ave.) are little more than savage beasts. They are criminal, they are psychotic, and they are always looking to push their weight around.

One night when I was 28 years old, I witnessed a fight from my upstairs bedroom window that involved a love triangle and 2 guns.

I woke my husband to let him know that I wanted out of Columbus. Even though we lived in one of the nicer parts of town, it was becoming a place I could not see raising my children any longer. Our son was in kindergarten and we had two younger daughters.

We left the city, and will never return. We live in a small town where we raised the kids, and where all the grandkids call home. If there ever comes a time where I feel that my family is unsafe here, I'll move again. But I will never return to any city where psychotic criminals kill anyone who is unfortunate enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Life is too precious.
