Included in other court documents, police said that when they arrested Burrel E. Mohler Sr., they found pornography depicting incest at his Independence home, where he had lived for about 15 years with his wife and a woman who was given a separate room.

According to his wife, Mohler moved to the basement after she found his sexually explicit magazines and videos. Also included were numerous sex toys and videos showing girls under age 17.

The six children of Burrell Mohler, Jr. told investigators they were abused by the four sons of Burrell, Sr., and by their grandfather.

One victim told investigators she was afraid of her grandfather, father and uncles and had suppressed many of the memories of the abuse, according to the documents.

Charges against Mohler, Sr., involving that victim include allegations that she was forced to have intercourse with him, that she was forcibly sodomized, and that a dog was part of at least one of the abuse incidents.

The victim told police of eight instances of being abused, and a ninth incident where she was forced to watch the sexual abuse of her brother.

The victim also told police the abuse occurred before her 12th birthday, between March 1988 and March 1995.

She told police the abuse resulted in a pregnancy and she was forced to have an abortion when she was 11 years old, according to the court documents.

The court documents reveal the vicitm told authorities after her grandmother died, she and her siblings would take turns sleeping with their grandfather. That was when the sexual attacks occurred.

The increasingly bizarre allegations in the Bates City, Missouri child abuse case are reminiscent of satanic ritual abuse cases from the 1980’s and ‘90s. According to KCTV Channel 5 in Kansas City, Missouri, three of the accusers have said that in April 1988, Burrell Mohler, Jr. forced them to participate in the kidnapping and murder of a complete stranger, whose body was then buried somewhere on the Mohler property.

Another alleged victim has come forward with an allegation that should be easily provable or disprovable. She says that she was kept prisoner in the same Mohler basement “for years” while molested by all five of the accused members of the Mohler family. The new accuser says she got pregnant twice, and that one of the babies was buried in the basement.

These accusations are being called “chilling,” which is accurate if they are true. Still, they are also chillingly similar to accusations of ritual abuse which were later found to be entirely without evidence in the 1980's and '90s. Although horrible abuses do occur against children, many of the public accusations of extreme and barbaric abuse have later been found to be ungrounded.

In Bakersfield California, for example, thirty adults were convicted in the 1980’s of ritual sexual abuse of multiple children based only on the testimony of the accusers. In some cases, accusations included beatings, hanging from hooks, forced prostitution, and forced performance in child pornography. The accused said they were victimized by a sex ring that included their parents, grandparents, parents friends, and others. At least twenty-two of the convictions were eventually thrown out when it was discovered that the children had acted under coercion to accuse the adults.

Sean Penn, a later resident of Bakersfield, became interested and released a documentary in April 2009 on the case called Witch Hunt.

Similarly, the McMartin Preschool case involved accusations of multiple-victim ritual sexual abuse by adults based entirely on the testimony of the accused. Accusations included the murder of infants, sex with animals, ritual abuse in hidden rooms, and forced participation in murder, among many other bizarre claims. Juries failed to convict any of the adults when it became clear that the children had been guided to the accusations by therapists hired to evaluate whether or not they had been abused.

Nor is it only children who recount horrific stories of abuse that later turn out not to have occurred. Skeptical Inquirer recounts the story of two adult daughters who “recovered” memories of abuse that had allegedly occurred when they were children many years before. The alleged abuses included ritual abuse by their parents and a sex ring of adults, forced participation in the murder of infants, rapes resulting in pregnancies that were aborted, and forced prostitution. The women's parents were convicted despite the lack of evidence. It has since been proven that it it exceedingly easy to implant or develop false memories.

It takes incredible courage for an abuse victim to come forward, and it is understandable that the courts take extra precautions to hide the identity of alleged victims in these cases. Nevertheless, human memory is notoriously unreliable, which is why police look for supporting evidence. (It is also why crime scene investigators have become so popular on television in the past few years.) That being the case, perhaps care should be taken to hide the identity of the accused as well, at least until evidence is presented in court.

If reliable evidence is found in the Bates City abuse case, then there is little doubt the men involved will never see freedom again, and no sane person will wish otherwise. In the meantime, though, given past history, it makes sense to assume as our constitution does that the Mohler’s are innocent until proven guilty.

The sprawling case has roiled this rural community, on the rolling bluffs above the Missouri River. And it is especially controversial because it involved what are said to be the years-old repressed memories of one woman.

Family and friends of the Mohlers are questioning the reliability and validity of such memories, which legal experts also debate.

The authorities, though, say they have physical evidence to back up at least some of the claims. Five siblings of the 26-year-old woman, four girls and a boy, have also come forward with similar accounts of abuse, law enforcement officials say.

Mr. Mohler, who has been characterized by prosecutors as presiding over the abuse, has been charged with forcible rape and the use of a child in a sexual performance. His sons — Burrell E. Mohler Jr., 53, Jared L. Mohler, 48, Roland N. Mohler, 47, and David A. Mohler, 52 — were also charged with various felonies, including rape.

On Tuesday, a sixth family member, Darrel Mohler, 72, a brother of the elder Mr. Mohler, was charged with rape, and prosecutors filed new charges of child sexual abuse against Burrel Mohler Sr. and his previously accused sons.

“The charges seem to be so absurd, they’re unbelievable,” said Robert Bruch, a friend and former employer of the elder Mr. Mohler. “Everybody’s in total shock.”

Mr. Bruch said he worshiped with Mr. Mohler at the Community of Christ Church in Bates City. “There was never a question about his loyalty to the church or Christ,” Mr. Bruch said. “Never one complaint about his behavior.”

A spokesman for the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Sgt. Collin Stosberg, when pressed on the question of “recovered” memories serving as the basis for criminal charges, said, “We feel like we have enough evidence, otherwise we wouldn’t have gotten to this point.”

Bob Ramsey, a retired chemistry professor who lives next to David Mohler in Lamoni, Iowa, said that he had been close to the Mohler family for 20 years and that he had worked with David Mohler and his wife at Graceland University. David Mohler worked in the technology department as a supervisor of the telephone system, and his wife was a secretary in the division where Mr. Ramsey used to work.

Mr. Ramsey, 71, said he had never had concerns about suspicious behavior or abuse in the Mohler family.

“My reaction was absolute unbelief,” he said. “It just does not fit the character of David. He has been a super helpful, kind individual.”

An investigator said in a court document that at the old farmhouse he found a broken glass jar, glass fragments, other jars and a bone, although it remains unclear what type of bone was recovered.

Law enforcement officials had been looking specifically for glass jars with written statements inside. The complainants, they said, told them that as children, they had written what happened to them on pieces of paper and buried them in glass jars in the backyard, hoping that once buried, the memories would go away.

When asked if investigators had found any written statements, Sergeant Stosberg declined to comment.

New evidence in the Mohler family sex investigation continues to add more twists and turns to the already bizarre case. In a search of 77-year-old Burrel Mohler Sr.'s home police seized numerous pornographic items, some depicting incest. Police said the wife of Burrel Mohler Sr., Sandra Mohler, voluntarily aided police in the search of their home on Tuesday, Nov. 10.

During the search police found an array of pornographic videos and magazines. A number of the magainzes included children appearing under the age of 17. Several of the magazines were incestuous in nature with titles like "Family Taboo," "Best of Family Touch," and "X Family Matters." The articles in the magazines described sexual relations between family members.

Some of the videos seized were home movies with unknown content. Others were pornographic in nature with titles like "Mystery Voyeur" and "Pornochio." A number of sex toys were also taken, including a penis pump and four plastic dildos.

Sandra Mohler told police that after she discovered Burrel Sr.'s stash of pornographic magazines and videos, an arrangement was made for him to move into the basement of their home where he would continue to live and sleep. Sandra said on at least two occasions, the most recent being two months ago, she searched his room and found numerous magazines depicting young females fully nude in sexually explicit poses. Other magazines referenced incestuous activity. Sandra said she took some of those magazines and locked them in a file cabinet in her bedroom.

During the search, police also seized several firearms from Mohler Sr.'s home, including a two shotguns, two rifles and two pellet guns. Ammunition and a gun cleaning rod was also taken. Other miscellaneous items that were seized by police include several adult pornographic books, a number of computers, video recorders, cameras and film.

Burrel Mohler Sr., 77, is one of six members of the Mohler family all charged with sodomy and rape of children under the age of 14. Others charged in the case include Burrel Sr.'s four sons: Burrell Edward Mohler Jr., 53, David A. Mohler, 52, Jared Leroy Mohler, 48, and Roland Neil Mohler, 47. The brother of Burrel Mohler Sr., Darrel Mohler, 72, was also arrested in Silver Springs Fla., on Friday, Nov. 13. He remains in Florida but has waived his right to extradition.

The Mohler men will have their third court appearance in early December.

This seems like a true Horror story and I was thinking at first that maybe this chick was making it all up, especially when I read the part about Burrel Jr. making his young daughters help him murder that 300 lb man. Fox 4 is reporting what police found when they searched 77-year-old Burrel Mohler Sr.'s home, where he lived in basement exile. His wife reportedly found some of his alleged deviant-porn stash and socked some away just in case Johnny Law came looking. Well, they did, and she turned stuff over to them. Boy did she.

Here's a partial list of items allegedly recovered.

Jared Mohler, 48, is in jail in Lexington, along with his father and three brothers. The men are alleged to have committed years of rape, sodomy and bestiality against young children in the extended family.

According a search warrant affidavit, the victims told their mother about the abuse. The woman, however, took the complaints to the head of the family’s church rather than law enforcement.

Authorities now say the mother is cooperating with the investigation that began in August.

The alleged abuse occurred from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s when the victims at times were as young as five. The victims told investigators recently they remembered being taken from location to location for photographs of them with naked men and in provocative poses.

Earlier, investigators found incest pornography, video tapes and recording equipment at the Independence home of Burrell Mohler Sr. Lafayette County Prosecutor Kellie Ritchie said Wednesday she did not know what was on the tapes.

Similarly, cameras and computers also were taken from the home in the 1900 block of Fair Lane in Columbia.

A Kansas City metro father said he believes his son is likely one of the victims of a family charged with numerous child sex crimes and said he reported the abuse years ago.

"I found out from Burrell Ed Mohler Jr.'s ex-wife," Mark Young said.

Young said he tracked down Jeanette Mohler in 2000, after he said the Liberty School District called him to report his son had been missing from school for 30 days. The boy's mother married Ed Mohler Jr. in 1999.

"I couldn't conceive, the stories she was telling me about sexual abuse and she did advise my son was in extreme danger," Young said.

Since February 2000, Young said he has collected more than 300 pages of documents from the Division of Family Services. He said the documents consist of his verbal and written complaints that he believed Ed Mohler Jr. sexually abused his son. He said he even called the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department to check on his son's welfare and notified a court appointed guardian named in DFS reports as Pete Schloss.

"He said, 'Well, I don't know what you want me to do. I like Mr. Mohler and I think you're starting trouble,'" Young said.

Young showed KCTV5 a report taken by the the DFS in March of 2000. There is a box checked "no" next to "child sexual abuse suspected." Young said this the report was taken one month after he called the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department concerned his son was being held on a Bates City, Mo., farm.

The second wife found the porn about three months ago, locked it in a filing cabinet and banished her husband to the basement to live. Since then she has turned the porn over to LE.

I wonder what the officials of the Church told the one mother to do about the sexual abuse complaints from her children? Sweep the complaints under the rug, like the Catholic Church did for so many years? Those Church officials should be charged, too, if it can be proved that they were told and did nothing.

Of course some of the church members are standing up for these men. There is more to this than has been uncovered. The sex abuse and murder are no doubt the most horrendous, but there are other child abuses tied to this group of people, and NOT just these particular men. I pray it ALL comes out with this investigation.

The warrant also says authorities seized more than 60 videos from the Columbia home of Jared Mohler, one of the men charged. Also charged are Mohler's father and four brothers.

According to the Boone County warrant, the alleged victims told their mother about the abuse, but said she did not tell authorities. The warrant says she told church leaders instead.

Also new today, court documents revealed that some of the victims tried to escape the family farm but were captured. Three of the girls attempted to run away to a neighbor's house for help but were brought back home and court documents said their punishment was to watch the men sexually abuse one of the other children.

Mohler Sr. has been charged with five counts of sex with a child under the age of 14, one count of deviate sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 14, one count of using a child to have sexual performance with a horse and one count of forcing a child under the age of 17 to have sex with more than one minor child. Mohler Jr. has been charged with one count of having sex with a child under the age of 14 and one count of using a child to have sexual performance with a horse. Jared Mohler has been charged with using a child to have sexual performance with a horse.

The church where three Mohler men accused of sexual abuse were once lay ministers denies it ever heard reports of the alleged abuse.

Investigators have said the victims told their mother about the abuse. The mother then reported the matter to Community of Christ church leaders, investigators say. But the church denies the claim.

"We found no reports of sexual abuse of children (were) given to any Community of Christ leaders about the three lay ministers, suspended November 11," the church said in a statement. The three men are Burrell Mohler, Sr. and two sons, David and Jared Mohler.

"However, because the search of files was for anyone with the Mohler name, we discovered that Burrell Edward Mohler, Jr. and his wife, Jeanette Marie Mohler, joined the Mormon Church (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) in 1982 and their membership with Community of Christ was withdrawn," the church's statement continues.

New developments in the Mohler sex abuse case center on Jared Mohler, who lives in Columbia. A Columbia search warrant shows alleged victims told investigators their adult relatives had them pose for photos in "a sexual and provocative manner." Investigators seized more than 60 videos from Jared Mohler's Columbia home.

Also charged in the case are Jared Mohler's father, uncle, three brothers, and one other man. The counts include rape, sodomy and beastiality.

For the young sisters in the Mohler family, summers were the worst because that’s when they had to go to their grandfather’s farm.

That’s what the sisters, now grown women, have told authorities who on Thursday filed 11 more charges in a child sex abuse case that has shocked the country.

In court documents to support the latest charges, the sisters told of bestiality, mock weddings, sex in a church and being made to have sexual contact with each other while their father, grandfather and uncles watched and laughed.

Thursday’s charges, which raise the total to 42, could be the last in the Lafayette County case that has seen a 77-year-old Independence grandfather and his four middle-age sons arrested and locked up in the jail in Lexington, Mo. The men are alleged to have committed rape, sodomy and other assaults against children in the extended family for years.

Acting on evidence that some of the assaults were photographed, investigators searched the home of the grandfather, Burrell Mohler Sr., and found incest pornography, videotapes and recording equipment.

They also recovered 65 videotapes from an uncle’s home in Columbia.

Lafayette County Prosecutor Kellie Ritchie said she did not know what was on the tapes.

A brother of Burrell Mohler Sr., Darrel Mohler, is being held in Florida.

The alleged abuse occurred from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, when the sisters ranged in age from 5 to mid-teens. The case broke when one went to police in August. Her siblings have since supported her version of events.

They told investigators they remembered being taken from location to location for photographs on beds with naked men and in provocative poses.

In 1988, several of the sisters ran away to flee the abuse, but they later returned home. As punishment, their father, Burrell Mohler Jr., allegedly made them watch him sodomize another sibling.

According a search warrant affidavit for Jared Mohler’s house in Columbia, the victims told their mother about the abuse. The woman, however, took the complaints to the head of the family’s church rather than law enforcement. Authorities now say the mother is cooperating with the investigation.

Earlier stories about this case indicated the Mohler family had extensive ties with the Community of Christ. However, the mother — Jeanette Mohler, at the time the wife of Burrell Mohler Jr. — left in 1982 with him to join another church, a church official told The Kansas City Star on Thursday.

Ex-bishop Paul Tonga told Fox 4 that Burrel Mohler Jr.'s wife came to him several times and relayed fears that her husband was abusing their children.

Tonga, who was the leader of the church where Mohler Jr.'s worshiped, explained that he questioned Burrel Mohler Jr. and the children, but didn't learn anything.



"He denied the accusation," Tonga said. "Nobody admitted anything for the children."

Tonga said his investigation ended there. He did not explain why he never contacted police.
