FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Shirley Bowles shows the pile of brand new clothes she was planning to give her grandson for his first birthday. But little Kamarie Bowles Jr. will never learn to walk in the white Nike Air Jordans she got for him.
The little boy she called Bug died Wednesday morning after a violent encounter, police say, with his mother’s roommate.
“He was a goofy little, busy little fella, I mean babies are, he was only being a baby,” said Shirley Bowles, the victim’s grandmother.
22 year old Ian Arnold is accused of shaking Bowles Jr. on Monday inside the rented apartment in Northeast Fort Lauderdale, which he shared with the child’s mother.
According to police, Arnold called 911 to say the baby wasn’t breathing right and had no movement in his eyes.
At the hospital, police say, a doctor found hand-shaped bruises on the child’s body and brain injuries.
Arnold allegedly told detectives he must have “snatched” Kamarie away from the computer too hard while his mother was a work.
“Just frustrated, I guess, I don’t know, I just don’t know,” said the victim’s great aunt, Rosa Thomas.
Family members say Arnold and Kamarie Bowles Sr., the child’s father, grew up together and were long-time friends.
In fact, the older Bowles is currently in jail but his mother says he was allowing Arnold to stay at his apartment with his son and girlfriend while he looked for work.
“You’d never think that someone you’re trying to help could cause you so much pain,” Shirley Bowles said.
She will have to return the birthday clothes she bought for her son grandson, except for one.
She said he’ll be buried in the Elmo outfit he never got to wear.
Arnold is in the Broward County Jail charged with aggravated child abuse but police say those charges will likely be upgraded to murder charges when he appears before the judge on Thursday.

So sad!! Why, oh why, do mothers keep letting these "men with issues" near their precious children? Surely, the mother must have known that he had anger issues! Poor little guy...
