Yes, you did fine. The only thing I added was the suspects name. We always try to put a name on the subject line so that if someone is searching with the top right search engine, they can find it easily.

Thanks for this article. Thank God this killer was finally caught!!!

'Grim Sleeper' case brings flood of calls from families of missing women

Since the July arrest of "Grim Sleeper" serial killer suspect Lonnie David Franklin Jr. for allegedly killing 10 people, Los Angeles police investigators have received 75 calls from the family and friends of missing women, wanting to know the fate of their loved ones.

After comparing information in those calls with evidence gathered in the Franklin investigation, detectives were soon able to discount most of the cases, said veteran homicide Det. Dennis Kilcoyne, head of the task force that tracked down the former city sanitation worker and police garage attendant. But Kilcoyne said investigators were taking a hard look at information generated by a handful of those contacts.

Officials are bracing for more inquiries with Thursday's release of images of about 160 women who were photographed or videotaped by Franklin.

Any public tips will come on top of 30 cases that police investigators already are reviewing because they share similarities to the slayings in which Franklin is accused. Franklin has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

There is no DNA evidence in any of the 30 cases, which is significant because authorities said they tied Franklin to some of the 10 killings based on a combination DNA and ballistics evidence. Many of the cases are three decades old and occurred during a period when several serial killers were allegedly operating in South Los Angeles.

Franklin allegedly killed seven women between 1985 and 1988, then his crimes seemed to come to an abrupt stop, authorities said. The slayings resumed in 2002, with a killing that year, another in 2003 and a third in 2007, police said.

The L.A. Weekly dubbed the killer the Grim Sleeper because of the lengthy, unaccounted-for gap in the slayings. But officials have said repeatedly that they suspect Franklin may be responsible for more homicides, including during the apparent lull.

During the search of Franklin's South Los Angeles home, detectives collected photo albums, documents, business cards and other records that they hoped can provide a better picture of the suspect and perhaps provide links to other victims.

One of the more troubling discoveries was nearly 1,000 still photographs and hundreds of hours of home video showing women, almost all of them partly or completely nude and striking sexually graphic poses.

LAPD officials said that after months of trying to identify the women, they decided to go public with the images of about 160 in the hope that they, family or acquaintances will recognize the pictures and contact investigators.

"There's going to be a lot of speculation about the condition of some of the women in these photographs,' Kilcoyne told the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday. “Right now, I don't know the answer."

Police release 180-photo trove from 'Grim Sleeper' suspect

In a bold effort to determine whether there are additional "Grim Sleeper" victims, the Los Angeles Police Department is releasing photos of scores of women found in the possession of a man charged in 10 South Los Angeles killings.

Police hope the photo display will generate new tips from the public. Since the July arrest of Lonnie David Franklin Jr., the LAPD has received 75 calls from the family and friends of missing women wanting to know the fate of their loved ones.

This is not the first time Southern California law enforcement has employed the tactic to help deal with serial killings. Last year, the Huntington Beach Police Department made public photos of women taken by accused serial killer Rodney Alcala. In 2006, the L.A. Sheriff's Department released the photos of 50 women taken by another accused killer, Bill Bradford.

In the Grim Sleeper case, any public tips will come on top of 30 cases that police investigators already are reviewing because they share similarities to the slayings in which Franklin is accused. Franklin has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

There is no DNA evidence in any of the 30 cases, which is significant because authorities said they tied Franklin to some of the 10 killings based on a combination of DNA and ballistics evidence. Six more possible Grim Sleeper cases being investigated

Los Angeles detectives assigned to the Grim Sleeper serial killer case say they are investigating two additional homicides that may be the work of suspect Lonnie Franklin Jr., according to an aide for an L.A. councilman in whose district some of the killings took place.

The detectives also said there are four missing persons cases that may be related to the overall investigation, the aide told CNN.com Thursday.

In July, 57-year-old Lonnie David Franklin Jr. was arrested and charged with 10 murders and one attempted murder related to slayings that date to 1985. He has pleaded not guilty. In 2009, CNN.com published a special cold case interactive on the decades-long hunt for the killer. Police were led to Franklin after his 28-year-old son was arrested and gave a DNA swab, authorities said. When authorities announced the arrest, they revealed that Franklin had, for a time, worked as a garage attendant at a Los Angeles police station.

Who is Franklin?

Detectives delivered the news about the additional cases at a community meeting Wednesday night at Bethel AME Church in South Los Angeles. They were responding to a question from a family member of one of the two homicide victims, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Dennis Gleason, a spokesman for Eighth District Councilman Bernard Parks, told CNN that the possible additional homicide victims were identified through photographs related to the Grim Sleeper case that police released to the public in December.

Shortly after Franklin's arrest, police searched his home and said they found Polaroids and videotape of many women. In December, investigators released some of those photographs (viewable here), which generated leads, they said.

Franklin is in custody awaiting trial.

This is what the boogie man looks like. faint
Raine you have done a great job on this thread. The LA times have done a nice job of laying this out for all of us. All those pictures take a while to go through. It is kind of rough to look at them. Some pictures appear to be taken after they were dead.

Arrest made in Los Angeles Grim Sleeper serial killer case/The Los Angeles Times and KTLA are naming the suspect as Lonnie David Franklin Jr, 51 Empty LAPD Posts 'Grim Sleeper' Photos To Facebook, Twitter In To Help Identify Possible Victims

Post by Wrapitup Fri Oct 19, 2012 2:42 pm

The LAPD has posted photographs to Facebook and Twitter that were found in possession of "Grim Sleeper" suspect Lonnie David Franklin Jr.

In the hopes of identifying possible victims of the so-called "Grim Sleeper" killer, the Los Angeles Police Department has posted images of 42 women whose photos were found in the possession of Lonnie David Franklin Jr., a 59-year-old retired auto mechanic arrested in July 2010 in connection with a number of killings.

"These women have yet to be identified, and the Department is asking for the public’s help," the LAPD said in a press release. "If anyone recognizes any of the women in the photographs, Facebook or Twitter may be used to make a positive identification."

Two new social media accounts -- @LAPDGrimSleeper on Twitter and "LAPD Grim Sleeper" on Facebook -- were launched Thursday.

The photos, believed to have been taken between 1976 and 2010, are among thousands that police recovered from Franklin's home after DNA evidence allegedly linked him to the killings of 10 women that occurred between 1985 and 1988 and between 2002 and 2007. The serial killer was nicknamed the "Grim Sleeper" because of his unexplained 14-year hiatus.

All of the victims were black, and many were prostitutes. The victims were either shot with a handgun or strangled. Their bodies were dumped in alleyways and trash bins, authorities said.

This most recent appeal by the LAPD is not the first time they have sought help identifying potential victims. In December 2010, 180 photos found in Franklin's possession were released during a news conference. Some of the photos are duplicates, and police are not sure exactly how many different people were represented in them.

Following the initial release of the photos, all but 48 of the women were identified. That number has since been narrowed down to 42, according to the LAPD. Authorities have spent nearly two years trying to identify all of the women in the photos. Now they are hoping social media will help finish the job.

Franklin has pleaded not guilty to 10 counts of murder and one count of attempted murder that involved a near-fatal assault on a woman who was raped, shot and left for dead in November 1988.

Prosecutors said they will seek the death penalty in the case.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact police at 1-877-527-3247. Anonymous tipsters can also contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
