(CNN) -- Indiana authorities continued searching for answers and urging vigilance on Monday, one day after finding five bodies at two addresses in rural Franklin County.
"There are persons that we are looking for, (but) we don't have any idea where they are or what their mind-set is," Sheriff Ken Murphy told reporters Monday evening from Brookville.
Sgt. Jerry Goodin of the Indiana State Police noted there are not yet any "persons of interest" or suspects in the case. He added authorities couldn't rule out that the shooter or shooters are among the dead, describing the probe as "a very fluid situation."
"At this time, it's completely open," Goodin said of the investigation. "The person or persons responsible for this crime are the only ones who can tell us the motive. They're the only ones who know what happened."
Authorities first got a call Sunday afternoon from people concerned about a small child wandering near the street along Stipps Hill Road near Laurel, in eastern Indiana about halfway between Indianapolis and Cincinnati, Ohio. Not seeing any adults around, some citizens stayed with the child until police arrived.
After "gaining more information" by talking with the child and neighbors, a Franklin County sheriff's deputy requested help. That led to the discovery of a dead man at one address and four other fatalities -- two males and two females -- at an address across the street, Goodin said.
The state police sergeant said Monday night that "the child is safe," declining to elaborate.
He added that the state medical examiner in Indianapolis had conducted autopsies on four of the five bodies found. She had yet to positively identify all of them, said Goodin.
"Some of the victims at the scene looked as though they had sustained gunshot wounds," the state trooper said. But he cautioned this does not mean, necessarily, that all those found dead had been shot -- saying the medical examiner will likely make such a determination.
Both Murphy and Goodin stressed that law enforcement agents were "working around the clock" on the case. They urged people to call in tips or any information, with the sheriff predicting the public's help "is going to solve this case."
They also asked the public to be on alert, mindful those those responsible for the deaths could still be at large and dangerous.
"We should all be more vigilant than we normally are. This is a good reminder as to why," said Murphy. "We're just encouraging people to lock your doors, be vigilant, report any suspicious activity."

LAUREL, Ind. — Five people were found dead Sunday at two homes in rural southeastern Indiana, and authorities warned residents to be careful because it wasn't immediately clear whether there was one or more suspects on the loose.

The multi-agency investigation began after the Franklin County Sheriff's Department responded to a call Sunday afternoon about a child wandering around a roadway in the area, according to a news release from Indiana State Police.

After a deputy spoke with the child and neighbors, he called for backup to search two homes near the town of Laurel, about 50 miles southeast of Indianapolis. Police found a male's dead body at one residence, and the dead bodies of two males and two females at the other home across the street, authorities said.

The victims weren't identified pending notification of family members and autopsies scheduled for Monday in Indianapolis. Although the state police news release didn't indicate a cause of death, it said it was unknown "if the shooter or shooters could be among the deceased."

Sgt. Jerry Goodin, spokesman for the Indiana State Police, declined to confirm the cause of death or any other information about the victims. He told The Associated Press that it was too early in the investigation to rule out the possibility of one or more suspects on the loose and cautioned residents of the neighborhood to be careful until more is known.

"They should be vigilant," Goodin said. "They need to make sure they keep the doors locked. If they see any suspicious people, absolutely they should dial 911."

Thanks for your concern but I am way up NW and Laurel seems to be way down central..eastern part of the state.

There is a lot of meth down there so I would not be suprised if drugs aren't involved. Lots of poor folks down there.

We travel down that way often being that we have family down there. If you look just east of Laurel you will see the Brookville Dam. A beautiful resort area that a lot of people have houseboats and beautiful homes.

Connersville just North of Laurel is where the movie Hoosiers was shot.

No we are up North with all the crooked politicians in neighboring cities not down South with all the Meth.

What a world.

Actually Laurel is not that far from where Katelyn Markham went missing.

Katelyn went missing from Fairfield, Ohio which is about 47 miles from Laurel, Indiana. Hummm

What gets me in the above video is that woman Knew they were selling drugs out of that trailer and Knew they had a 4 year old. Wouldn't you, as a neighbor and concerned citizen, call the cops and complain of all the "traffic" in and out of there at all hours and let the cops Know you know they are drug dealers????

Relatives say they think drugs are to blame for the deaths of five people found dead in southeast Indiana.

Teresa Richardson says police told her Monday that the victims included her sister, Angie Napier, her estranged husband, Roy Napier, and the couple’s two adult children, Melissa and Jacob Napier.

The Napiers were found in their home near Laurel, about 50 miles southeast of Indianapolis. Richardson says the family had been involved with drugs and thinks their deaths were a “drug deal gone bad.”

A fifth person, Henry Smith, was found dead on a nearby property.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin says some of the victims were shot. Autopsies were pending.

As authorities tried to piece together the events that left five people dead, family members and neighbors spun an array of scenarios but reached no consensus about who was behind the violence that shocked a rural Indiana neighborhood where residents often don't even lock their doors.
More than 24 hours after the bodies were found, police were still giving no assurances Monday about whether the danger had passed or if they believed a killer (or killers) remained at large in this stretch about 50 miles southeast of Indianapolis.

Sept. 26: Teresa Richardson leaves after talking with a state trooper at the entrance to the home of her former brother-in-law, Roy Napier, where four people were found dead near Laurel, Ind., in rural Franklin county. A fifth person was found dead across the street. The car in the background belongs to Richardson's sister, Angie Napier.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin declined to call the investigation a "manhunt" because authorities were unclear who -- if anyone -- they're seeking. He cautioned that residents be wary, although he did not rule out that one or more suspects may have been among the dead discovered Sunday.
While authorities gave no official identification of the victims, waiting until after the results of a final autopsy set for Tuesday, family members told The Associated Press they received confirmation from police about the deceased. They were identified as Angie Napier, Roy Napier, their two adult children Melissa Napier and Jacob Napier, and their friend Henry Smith, whose body was found at a separate property nearby.
Family and neighbors talked about their own theories, ranging from angry family members turning on one another to an acquaintance allegedly killing them all in a dispute. Some speculated that drug activity, which they said had been prevalent in the area, may have been to blame.
Teresa Richardson, who is Angie Napier's sister, said the family had been involved with drugs. Franklin County Sheriff Ken Murphy said his deputies had been to the address previously but did not say whether drugs were involved.
Richardson, who called the deaths a "senseless massacre," said her sister and Roy Napier would have arguments that sometimes got physical, but she didn't think any of the family members would have turned on the others. Angie Napier was visiting Roy Napier and the children Sunday at the mobile home, Richardson said.
Police first responded to the scene Sunday afternoon after a passerby found a 4-year-old girl walking a road near the Napier home. Police found the Napiers dead shortly after that, then found Smith's body at another residence.
"People who haven't locked their doors in years, they're definitely locking up tight now," said Ryan Renfro, who lives nearby. "I actually took off work today because I'm here with my elderly grandparents and I didn't want to leave them here alone until they caught who they are looking for."
Jewel Compston said her son, Henry Smith, 43, left the house they share Sunday morning to go to the home where the four bodies were found.
"He never made it back," she said, tearing up. Compston said police told her early Monday that Smith had been shot to death.
Smith's aunt, Evelyn Renfro, lives nearby and said she heard shots around noon Sunday.
"Nobody went out because they were loading the cattle here, and they didn't pay no attention to that," Renfro said.
Debra Richardson, who can see the home from the greenhouse at her Pretty Petals florist shop next to her house, said she has complained frequently to police about what she believed to be drug dealers in the area, including at the mobile home.
"I have a greenhouse business, and they had more traffic than I do," she said. "I'm in here working in the greenhouse and I see people pulling in all the time. You don't have that many people visit you."
Kerry Wren, a neighbor of the Napiers, said drug use has been a problem in the area for years but that the drugs of choice have changed, with painkillers becoming more popular than meth about a year ago. He said a family member was fatally shot in 2006 by someone who was high on meth.
"This whole county is burning up with the pills," he said.

A judge set bond Wednesday at $50,000 for a woman accused of helping a murder suspect rob a drug store.
Amanda Napier told police she was with David Ison when he went to buy drugs from a man who was later found shot to death, along with his wife, adult son and daughter and neighbor. She said she waited in the car and did not go inside the home.
Although Napier shares a last name with four of the victims -- Roy Napier, Angie Napier, Jacob Napier and Michelle Napier -- neither she nor her ex-husband is related to them. Neighbor Henry Smith was also found shot to death Sept. 25.
Ison was charged with five counts of murder in connection with the massacre, in addition to attempted robbery of an Osgood, Ind., store in May.
Amanda Napier said Ison initially denied involvement in the slayings, but she told police that he later admitted to killing them after Roy and Jacob Napier attempted to rob him, according to police.
Police said she told them Ison had become angry with the family after they raised the cost for him to buy OxyContin prescribed to Roy Napier from $10 to $12 per pill.

An Indiana prosecutor said Wednesday she might seek the death penalty against a man charged with fatally shooting his drug dealer, three of the dealer's family members and a neighbor in an apparent dispute over the price of oxycodone.

David Ison, 46, of Glenwood, Ind., pleaded not guilty Wednesday to five counts of murder. He appeared in Franklin Circuit Court wearing a protective vest, WCPO-TV reported.

Assistant Franklin County Prosecutor Melissa Wilhelm told WCPO the state might pursue the death penalty in the case.

When Judge Steve Cox asked him if he understood why he was in court, Ison replied, "Yes, your honor." Ison also told the judge he was not under the influence of drugs or being treated for mental illness.

Ison was charged Friday in the Sept. 25 slayings of Roy Napier, 50; his estranged wife, Angela, 47; their children, Melissa Napier, 23, and Jacob Napier, 18; and Henry Smith, 43, a neighbor who was found beaten and shot near the Napiers' mobile home in rural Laurel, about 50 miles southeast of Indianapolis.

A probable cause affidavit says the shootings followed an argument between Ison and Roy Napier over how much Napier was charging for the painkiller oxycodone.

Police said they found a .380-caliber handgun like the one they believe was used in the killings during a search of Ison's car and another one during a search of his home. Melissa Napier's cellphone, a pair of tennis shoes that matched bloody footprints found at the crime scene and a bloodstained T-shirt also were found at the home, police said.

Ison was being held on a $5 million bond on an unrelated charge of attempted robbery.

Post by raine1953 Sun May 19, 2013 3:19 am

The family of five Franklin County murder victims was angered today at a remark made by the killer after his sentencing. David Ison was sentenced to live in prison without the possibility of parole after admitting his role in the deaths.
David Ison killed four members of the Napier family of Laurel, Indiana in September. He also killed a neighbor. Prosecutors said Ison was mad that 50-year-old Roy Napier had changed the price of oxycodone pills he was selling. The 46-year-old Ison then shot Napier and his estranged 47-year-old wife, Angela; their children, 23-year-old Melissa Napier and 18-year-old Jacob Napier; and a 43-year-old neighbor, Henry X. Smith.

Local 12's Tiffany Wilson says the courtroom during the sentencing was very tense. Deputies even put a bullet proof vest on Ison because they've received so many death threats. No one was allowed to sit in the first two rows of the courtroom for the same reason.

The sentencing was quick but as he left, someone in the courtroom said, "I hope you die" and Ison responded by calling out, "Life over death." That comment angered the family. "He's standing up there saying life over death, being proud of what he did, haha to the family."

"They should have gave him the death penalty cause he got what he wanted...he said so right before he left."

On his way out of the courtroom, Ison told Local 12's Tiffany Wilson that his girlfriend is also to blame, saying "I think Amanda should pay for her part in the crime too it wasn't like she said it was, it was premeditated and she was part of the plan." So far, Ison's girlfriend is not facing any charges.

A four-year-old girl survived the shootings.

LAUREL, IN (FOX19) -
The girlfriend of an Indiana man who killed five people in September of last year is now facing charges in connection with the murders.

Amanda Napier, the live-in girlfriend of David Ison, is facing drug and robbery charges, according to a report in the Brookville American-Democrat.

Police say Napier sent text messages and helped set up a drug buy of Oxycontin that led to the deaths of Roy Napier, 50, his estranged wife, Angela, 47; their children, Melissa, 23, and Jacob, 18, and neighbor, Henry X. Smith, 43, in Laurel, Ind. Amanda Napier is not related to the victims.

She is also accused of driving Ison to a CVS in Brookville to commit an armed robbery there.

David Ison is serving a life sentence for the murders after pleading guilty in order to avoid the death penalty.

Napier faces six to 20 years in prison if convicted.
