Melissa was found in this state on October 8 at her home only due to a welfare check her mother, Marian Mims, called in.

She was life-flighted to Pitt County Memorial where she underwent an immediate craniotomy. She was bruised from head to toe, black e...yes, jaw broken on both sides, brain bleed, blood clot, and strangulation marks on her neck.

She was in the ICU for 9 weeks and passed away from her injuries on December 17, 2008. Her boyfriend claimed the injuries were a result of her falling in the bathroom, however, the doctors said there was no way she could've sustained her injuries from a fall he described. The doctors also found she had old head injuries when they performed the craniotomy.

Her boyfriend told more than one story regarding what happened to her to detectives. Melissa was asked what happened to her, and when she was able to talk she said he dragged me out of the house by my neck, threw me on the ground and hit me over the head with something.

In January 2009, Melissa's mother, Marian, sent a letter to District Attorney Vickory and an investigation was initiated. Marian was told she would be informed when the investigation concluded and a decision was made, but they never contacted her. Marian had to call numerous times before she was finally able to speak to someone in District Attorney Vickory's office. The person told Marian Melissa's boyfriend wouldn't be charged. Marian insisted upon speaking to Vickory and only when she stated she would contact the Attorney General did he call her back. He told her even though he believed her boyfriend did this to her, he didn't feel he had enough evidence to take it to trial. She asked him if he would get charged with criminal neglect for leaving her there for 6 days, and he said that's only a misdemeanor and if he was charged with that he would probably only get probation and if any evidence of murder came out they wouldn't be able to charge him with anything else.

One would think this would be a clear cut case of murder, but her boyfriend has never been charged with anything to this day.

Melissa Sue Mims Platt is the daughter of Michael and Marian Mims. She has two sisters and one brother , Maria Ramsey of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Michelle Mims of Friendswood, Texas and Michael Mims Jr of Baytown, Texas. She has two daughters, Brianna and Chasidy Platt.
Melissa Sue Mims was born in Houston, Texas on February 3, 1977. She had hypoglycemia when she was born and had to stay in the hospital for a month. When she came home other than a bout with colic she was a happy and healthy baby, an adventurous and loving toddler.
When she was eight we moved from Houston, Texas to Jacksonville, North Carolina where we lived until she was twelve, at that time we moved back to Texas.
We moved to Baytown in 1989 where Melissa attended Horace Mann Middle School and Lee High School. I only found this out after the fact but two of the things that she enjoyed doing with her sister Michelle was jumping off the roof of our house onto a mattress while the neighborhood kids looked on and riding on a piece of cardboard down the stairs in the back room. When Melissa was fifteen she worked at the McDonalds in Baytown, she was in charge of the Birthday parties that were done at the McDonalds and she really enjoyed that.
When she was sixteen she moved to Jacksonville to live with her older sister Maria and her three children, she babysat her niece Joanna and her nephews Brandon and Michael when her sister Maria was at work.
She gave birth to her first baby on October 1,1995, a beautiful daughter Brianna, Melissa was so full of happiness and love at the birth of her child. Her sister Maria was at her side when she gave birth to share in her joy. She again experienced more love and happiness on July 4, 2003 at the birth of her second daughter, Chasidy. She got married in 2001 and seperated from her husband in 2005.
Melissa was a loving young woman and would help anyone in need, she had a bubbly personality, a smile that would make all those around her smile.
Melissa loved the race car driver Jeff Gordon, she would always tell her sister she wanted to marry him. She loved listening to music, she had a little parrot named Alvin that she adored.
She loved life, her children and her family. She was hurt on October 3, 2008 and was air-lifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, North Carolina on October 9, 2008. She fought long and hard but her little body could not fight all the damage that had been done to it and on December 17, 2008 at 7:17 pm she went to the Lord.
