Meetme.com is a social networking site with virtual games.
OKLAHOMA CITY - A social networking site has police looking into what they call a disturbing coincidence.
Carina Saunders and Jaray Wilson, who both went missing and may have links to human trafficking, both had profiles on meetme.com this week. And both profiles claimed they were older than their actual age.

Meetme.com is a social networking site with virtual games. News 9 searched around the site and found you can find and flirt with friends by sex and age. There are sexually suggestive messages and pleas for help from minors. omg

You can buy people and be sold. You can play games, reconnect with friends or hook up by accepting money and dates. Carina Saunders' troubled life and scary death have plagued Oklahomans for a year now; her 19-year-old body found dismembered last fall.

Investigator say she may have been connected to drugs and human trafficking. Saunders died last year and her is case still unsolved, but until Tuesday she had an active profile on meetme.com So did missing 16-year-old Jaray Wilson.

"I'm concerned that these young girls are on the internet and sites without any oversight," said Debra Forshee with Oklahoma Youth Services. "A human trafficker can groom his prey online for several months."

The site was founded as my yearbook.com in 2005. Six months ago it was rebranded and renamed.

"These types of sites these social networking sites crop up they leave the internet they crop again," Forshee said.

When News 9 inquired about the website and a possible connection, Saunders and Wilson's profiles were removed.

"It is somewhat alarming. It makes you question about the site," said Director of the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, Darrell Weaver.

Weaver pointed out that many predators lure behind computers and parents should safeguard kids, not websites. The agency hadn't investigated any complaints about the site, at this writing.

Agents will investigate any possible connection and are working with local police departments to solve the Saunders and Wilson cases.

Central Oklahoma Salvation Army engages in war on human trafficking

Oklahoma City , OK|Sex-Trafficking Minors|Thursday, November 8, 2012
By: ZEKE CAMPFIELD, NEWSOK.COM

It will take more than law enforcement and money to combat human trafficking in Oklahoma, said Maj. Francina Proctor, associate area commander of the Central Oklahoma Salvation Army Area Command, who spoke to an Oklahoma City women's networking group on Wednesday.

The trafficking of humans in and through Oklahoma — for both sexual and labor purposes — can only be defeated with public awareness and a concerted effort by the community as a whole, Proctor told about two dozen women with OKC Happy Hour at Bricktown Brewery.

Proctor, guest speaker for the group's fall luncheon, used the podium to call for more support in combating a growing local problem.

“Sometimes it's not very comfortable for a city or area to say there is a problem, (but) there is more attention to it now, which is what we want,” she said. “It's not just in somebody else's backyard. It can be your neighbors, too.”

Proctor said there are an estimated 14 “pockets” of girls and women being used locally for sexual purposes, and identified several high profile cases in recent years, including that of Carina Saunders, a 19-year-old Mustang woman. Saunders was found in October 2011 dismembered in a duffel bag near a Bethany grocery store.

Authorities believe Saunders was tortured and killed to warn victims of sexual trafficking to cooperate.

Proctor said girls as young as 12 and 13 are groomed to be prostituted, and that the Internet and social networking makes it easier for predators to “charm” their victims.

Sexual trafficking, she said, is rarely a case of kidnapping. Its victims are vulnerable because they often come from poverty or from homes of abuse.

“Many people who take advantage of these kids are opportunists,” she said.

“Men charm these young girls who you know already have self esteem issues growing up by acting as their boyfriend, by providing riches. He breaks her down, he builds her up.”

She lauded Oklahoma lawmakers for approving legislation in 2008 that makes it easier for law enforcement to fight human trafficking.

A new law went into effect Nov. 1 that creates a human trafficking division within Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Control.

Mark Woodward, spokesman for the bureau, said the new division makes sense logistically.

Federal agents in Oklahoma have made more than 70 arrests from prostitution stings since June, including four underage girls. And of 150 prostitution-related arrests made by Oklahoma City police in 2011, 127 were trafficking based. But the bureau's new trafficking division will be the first of its kind at the state level.

“We've been running into investigations off and on for years where it has a human trafficking nexus, but we don't have statutory authority to investigate those,” Woodward said. “Drug traffickers are also trafficking humans, weapons — anything for money.”

Sometimes drug cartels will traffic local girls and women, but often they will bring immigrants from Mexico or elsewhere to Oklahoma to be prostituted, Proctor said.

It's a trade involving as much as 30 million women and children worldwide, and traffickers can fetch as much as $23,000 per human per year, she said.

“I want to see people get angry about it. I want to see people angry about child pornography,” she said.

Salvation Army aids fight

The Salvation Army has partnered with law enforcement and several other organizations — notably Oklahomans Against Trafficking Humans — to bring attention to the problem.

A new series of public service announcements are set to roll out soon, but what's really needed are more advocates, she said.

There are only four centers nationwide equipped to take in and treat child trafficking victims, she said. Local law enforcement does not have the resources to care for these girls, she said, and many of them end up in jail or back out on the streets.

An Oklahoma County judge on Wednesday ordered a trial on drug trafficking charges for two men, one of whom also is charged with murder in the torture and killing of a 19-year-old Mustang woman.

Preliminary hearing for Jimmy Lee Massey Jr. who is accused of trafficking meth. Massey also is charged with first-degree murder in dismemberment death of Carina Saunders. In Judge Doak's courtroom in the Oklahoma County Courthouse on Wednesday.

Judge orders man charged in Carina Saunders' slaying to face trial on drug charges

Oklahoma County Special Judge D. Fred Doak ruled sufficient evidence exists to send Jimmy Lee Massey Jr. and Francisco Gomez to trial on charges of trafficking methamphetamine and conspiracy to traffic methamphetamine.

Prosecutors amended the charges against Massey to include three counts of distribution, authorities said.
Massey, 33, and Luis Enrique Ruiz, 37, were charged in July with first-degree murder in the October 2011 death of Carina Saunders, whose dismembered body was found in a duffel bag.

Massey, while jailed on the drug charges, shared details of Saunders' killing with two detainees, according to a probable cause affidavit filed with his murder charge.

“Much of the initial information in the Carina Saunders case came from that drug investigation,” Oklahoma County First District Attorney Scott Rowland said.

Non-Profit Opens 'Carina's Closet' In Honor Of Murdered Oklahoma Teen

While Carina's family waits for justice in their daughter's murder, volunteers behind this new outreach program are hoping to turn tragedy into a fresh start for other young women.

OKLAHOMA CITY - Volunteers are working to help young women get off the streets of Oklahoma City and get a fresh start. The group is opening a clothing closet for victims of addiction, prostitution and human trafficking.
It's called Carina's Closet, named in honor of Carina Saunders, the teenager who was brutally murdered in 2011.

While Carina's family waits for justice in their daughter's murder, volunteers behind this new outreach program are hoping to turn tragedy into a fresh start for other young women.

Debbie Ashford followed the disappearance and murder of Carina Saunders on the news.

"It was just horrific to me, to realize a young girl like that, such a beautiful girl, could lose her life in such a way," Ashford said.

Saunders' dismembered body was found behind a Bethany grocery store in 2011. Investigators initially said she might have been a victim of human trafficking.

"It just touched me in such a way," said Ashford. "I wanted to honor her in some way."

So she started Carina's Closet at a church in northwest Oklahoma City.

It's a free clothing closet for young women in need, organized by the non-profit No Boundaries International.

"When a girl leaves a horrific situation, she's got an attachment to, a dependency on the trafficker, on the person who's controlling her. So when she comes off the street she may not even have the basic needs met such as food and clothing," No Boundaries President Lori Basey said.

They're also giving away free toys because a lot of the young women have children. Their goal is that the things on their shelves and the mission behind it all will give hope to those who need it most.

"They need a way to get their dignity back," said Ashford. "They need a way to feel good about themselves, and to start their life over again."

Carina Saunders went to Pre-K at the church where the closet is named in her honor.

The two men charged with her murder will be in court for a preliminary hearing in May.

Carina's Closet opens on Wednesday.

Witness recants story in Carina Saunders case. Lawyer says client has drug charges against her.

Published 11:19 PM CST Feb 06, 2013

OKLAHOMA CITY —

A witness who claimed she was present when Bethany teen Carina Saunders was murdered has recanted her story.

Almost 16 months have passed since authorities said Saunders' dismembered body was found dumped in a field in Bethany. Police charged Luis Ruiz and Jimmy Massey in Saunders' death, but the witness, who earlier claimed to have been present during the killing, is now saying she wasn’t there.

"It came out she was just repeating what someone else had said," said the witness's lawyer, David Slane. "Sometimes people want to help the police. Sometimes they want to help an investigation. Also remember, she was in trouble herself and wanted to get out of trouble."

Slane said his client had drug charges against her, but he noted that the facts of the story are credible no matter what her motivation is.

"I absolutely believe the facts of the story are absolutely true," said Slane.

According to court documents, Ruiz "physically beat" Saunders before dragging the victim to an upstairs room, where he tied her to a small table, and then "cutting off her left foot" with a saw.

"We are going to put our forensic people on it, our investigators, crime scene investigators, whoever we need once we've looked at the information to see where we can help," said Jessica Brown, of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations.

OSBI said it hasn’t had a chance to look through the case files, but its investigators will be starting soon.

Slane said his client is not facing any repercussions yet, even though she lied.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — First-degree murder charges have been dismissed against two men accused of killing a 19-year-old Oklahoma woman whose dismembered body was found stuffed in a duffel bag.

Oklahoma County prosecutors filed a motion Friday to dismiss the charges and recall arrest warrants for Jimmy Lee Massey Jr., 34, and Luis Ruiz, 38, pending further investigation into the death of Carina Saunders, whose body was found Oct. 13, 2011, behind a grocery store in the Oklahoma City suburb of Bethany.

The motion, signed by District Judge Ray Elliott, said charges can be re-filed pending the outcome of the investigation. The prosecutor in the case, Assistant District Attorney Jimmy Harmon, declined comment Monday.

Prosecutors filed the motion less than a month after Bethany police asked the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to take over the case. A spokeswoman for OSBI, Jessica Brown, said the agency is in the process of gathering and studying reports from various law enforcement agencies that have worked on the case.

"It's in the very beginning stages," Brown said. "It will take a long time."

Massey was already in custody on a drug-related charge when murder charges were filed again him and Ruiz in July. Their defense attorneys, Mitch Solomon and Derek Chance, respectively, did not immediately return telephone calls seeking comment.

An autopsy report conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner found that the victim's body had been decapitated and was missing hands and feet. It also indicated there were cut marks around Saunders' neck and that a tattoo on her upper back of the words "Kween Spade" showed rectangular cut marks that appeared to be an attempt to remove it. It also said that limbs had been severed and separated.

The report found that Saunders' body contained traces of Tramadol, a prescription pain reliever, but that analysts couldn't determine the amount due to decomposition.

Bethany Police Chief Phil Cole has said Saunders' killing was linked with human trafficking, prostitution and a drug ring.

An affidavit filed in the case says a witness told Bethany police she and Saunders went to a south Oklahoma City house where Ruiz beat Saunders and tied her up. The witness said Ruiz dragged Saunders to an upstairs room, tied her to a table and cut off her left foot. The witness said he also tried to cut off her right foot, but his saw broke. The witness said she escaped through a window.

Another witness told police she had been told the killing was recorded on Ruiz's cellphone. She said she was with Ruiz in a hotel in May, looked at his phone while he was in the bathroom, saw the video of the killing and recognized Ruiz as the person who was cutting off Saunders' foot, an affidavit says.

Court records state that Massey told police he witnessed Saunders' death but claimed he wasn't involved. But police said he told a jail inmate he was involved in the killing and provided details that only investigators and the Medical Examiner's Office would know.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- First-degree murder charges have been dismissed against two men accused of killing a 19-year-old Oklahoma woman whose dismembered body was found stuffed in a duffel bag.

Massey's defense attorney, Mitch Solomon, said he and Massey are "obviously very pleased" that the charges have been dismissed.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Saunders family as this investigation begins," he said. Solomon also was critical of some media outlets who he said had sensationalized the case.

Ruiz' defense attorney, Derek Chance, did not immediately return telephone calls seeking comment.

An autopsy report conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner found that the victim's body had been decapitated and was missing hands and feet. Ruiz and Massey Walk: Carina Saunders' Murder is Still Unsolved

It started to come apart on February 6th. That is when the Bethany Police Department turned over its records of the Carina Saunders murder to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. The Bethany P.D. had stepped into the grisly slaying ill prepared for an exhaustive and intense investigation. At first the leads were few and far between and when they did come they arrived in a tangled Gordian Knot with cords that went every which direction, then turned back onto themselves and refused to come undone. Rumors and urban myth rode side by side with the few hard facts that were actually available.

Today, The Oklahoman's Tim Willert has reported on line that murder charges in the case have been dropped by D.A. David Prater. The two men accused in the brutal slaying have, for now anyway, been exonerated. Jimmy Lee Massey will probably remain in the county lockup on charges of a separate crime, while according to defense attorney, Derek Chance, Luis Ruiz will walk out of that facility today.

The probable cause affidavits that caused both men to be arrested in the case have, at this time, proven, well, unprovable. All the rumors of a video of Ruiz torturing and dismembering Saunders are obviously just that, unsubstantiated rumors. The unnamed female witness who claims she saw him cut off Saunders' foot has either recanted, proven unreliable, or headed for the hills. The same can be said for the county jail inmates who claimed Massey told them all about the killing and how he had kidnapped another woman in order to force her to watch it. Other names in the case, Mindy Cottier, Christopher Banschbach, and Tia Downour, among them suddenly seem irrelevant and of no use to investigators at all. In short the OSBI is starting from the ground floor, only now it is has been nearly seventeen months since Saunders' body was discovered behind a grocery store in an empty field.

The only hard facts available to the media and public at this time come from the autopsy report and those deal only with the condition of Saunders' body and its state of decomposition. There is nothing there, even the unquantitative amount of Tramadol found in her liver, that would lead the OSBI toward a specific suspect.

Willert reports that Prater is not answering calls or questions regarding the case and Ruiz's attorney had no comment other than to say his client would be released today. Willert also wrote that charges could be refiled against the two men, but that certainly seems unlikely in the foreseeable future. The D.A's office has been burned once during this blind man's fire drill so it is doubtful it will move again until there is absolutely no doubt about who, when, and where.

If there is any justice at this time it is in the grim knowledge that Prater was getting ready to prosecute and perhaps convict the wrong guys, but he had to back out of it. At least that part of the system still seems to work. The rest of it appears to be a miasma of dysfunction and quackery.

So the killer, and or killers are still out there, walking among us. They are still doing whatever it is they do when they aren't hacking apart teenagers. They could be the assholes in line in front of you at the local 7-11 store. They might even be watching "Ancient Astronauts" on the History Channel right now.

Carina Saunders, however, isn't doing any of those things. She is still quite dead and for her justice remains not only elusive, but increasingly improbable.

The pooch, as they say, has been screwed and the getaway has been clean for someone.

There seems no bottom to this tragedy. And, to the disgrace of all those attempting to solve it, no end.

This makes me LIVID!! These are scary people..people that do not value human lives..people that traffic out young girls and kill them when they feel they are of no use to them anymore. Oklahoma should be ashamed of themselves! I feel for Carina's family!

Prosecutors dismissed murder charges against two men because Bethany police investigators submitted unsubstantiated paperwork in their rush to make an arrest in the dismemberment killing of a 19-year-old Mustang woman, The Oklahoman has learned.

Probable cause affidavits used to arrest and charge Jimmy Lee Massey Jr. and Luis Enrique Ruiz with the killing of Carina Saunders contained conflicting witness statements that did not support evidence in the case, according to multiple sources close to the investigation who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“Their information wasn't corroborated,” a source said. “They are trying to make it sound like they have enough probable cause to arrest (them).”

Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater dismissed the case against both men Feb. 22 because of insufficient evidence.

Charges can be refiled after further investigation, according to a judge's order.

Prater and Bethany police officials declined to comment.

Ruiz, 38, has been released from jail; Massey, 34, remains incarcerated on a drug charge. Their attorneys declined to comment.

Bethany police are no longer investigating the homicide. The case has been turned over to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

“It was not a professional and unbiased investigation,” said Oklahoma City defense attorney Scott Adams, who represented a woman once thought to have a video of the killing and dismemberment. “That's why we're sitting here with the charges being dismissed.”

Adams' former client agreed to meet with Bethany police in July but never showed up because she “was scared to come forward.”

“She certainly said she saw a video,” Adams said this week. “But the problem with that is I never saw any proof of that and neither did police.”

To date, no video of the killing has surfaced.

Conflicting details
Saunders was reported missing Sept. 28, 2011. Her body parts were found in a duffel bag behind a Homeland Store on NW 23 and Rockwell in Bethany on Oct. 13, 2011.

Bethany detectives interviewed dozens of witnesses and followed hundreds of leads over the next 15 months, court documents show.

Adams said the investigation was flawed from the start and produced conflicting affidavits based on the statements of less-than-credible witnesses.

“I think they took some people who are suspect at best at their word, and they rushed to judgment,” Adams said.

Bethany police Chief Phil Cole said Friday he is not going to make any statements about his department's investigation of the slaying.

“It wouldn't be appropriate now that OSBI is handling the case,” he said.

Bethany police detectives Jack Jencks and Austin Warfield did not return calls for comment.

Jencks wrote the affidavit filed with Ruiz's murder charge.

The document revealed that a witness named Michelle Hanshaw told investigators she accompanied Saunders to a home on South Harvey and watched Ruiz beat Saunders, tie her to a table and torture her by sawing off her left foot and then trying to cut off her right foot before the saw broke.

Hanshaw said she then jumped out of a window to escape after witnessing the killing.

Jencks wrote in Massey's affidavit that a witness named Tia Downour said she was at the location before the killing occurred — a two-story house at 3500 S Harvey.

She said she left shortly after Saunders arrived with Hanshaw.

The locations on the affidavits differ.

“Neither one of them said it happened at the same house,” a source said. “If Michelle and Tia were there at the same time, why didn't they have the same address?”

Downour also told detectives she saw a video of the killing on Ruiz's cellphone and recognized him “as the person in the video cutting off the foot of Saunders,” according to Ruiz's affidavit.

Lack of corroboration
The account of Saunders' torture, however, appears to contradict details in the state medical examiner's report, a source said.

Jencks writes in Ruiz's affidavit that “injuries to body found during autopsy match injuries described by Hanshaw,” including ligature marks across the shins.

“Nowhere does it talk about ligature marks, nowhere does it talk about tool marks, which would be left by a saw,” a source said. “It doesn't say that because nobody ever saw that.”

Massey is said to have shared details of the slaying with two detainees while jailed on drug charges, according to the affidavit filed with his murder charge.

Massey admitted to kidnapping a woman and making her watch as Saunders was tortured and killed. Massey also described how Saunders' body was dismembered and left in a field behind the Homeland grocery store at NW 23 and Rockwell Avenue, court records show.

“His story was never corroborated,” a source said. “These guys had nothing to do with it.”

Adams said getting to the bottom of what happened is going to be “extremely difficult” now that so much time has passed since Saunders' remains were discovered.

Having a fresh set of eyes take a look at the case will be beneficial, he said.

Jimmy Lee Massey Jr., who was implicated in the dismemberment killing of Carina Saunders, was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in prison on drug charges.

Massey, 34, was one of two men charged with murder in the 2011 killing of the 19-year-old Mustang woman, whose body was found in a duffel bag behind a grocery store.

The charges against the two men were dropped by the Oklahoma district attorney's office because of insufficient evidence.

The other man charged, Luis Enrique Ruiz, 38, was released from jail after the case was dismissed on Feb. 22.
Charges can be refiled after further

OSBI offers reward in Carina Saunders' homicide case
Teenager's body found in field in Oct. 2011

UPDATED 7:44 PM CDT Apr 03, 2013

OKLAHOMA CITY —The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is offering up to a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the homicide of Carina Saunders.

The 19-year-old's body was found in the field west of the Homeland grocery store at the intersection of Rockwell Avenue and Northwest 23rd Street in Bethany on October 13, 2011. The Bethany Police Department worked the case until recently when it requested OSBI take over the investigation.

After a thorough review of the case files produced by Bethany police, the OSBI agent assigned to this case has determined more work can be performed -- through interviews, forensics, and other investigative tools.

However, the OSBI will need the public’s help in developing further leads and expanding current ones. Therefore, if anyone has any information, knows of any evidence in this case, they are urged to call 1-800-522-8017. The $10,000 reward is the maximum state law allows OSBI to offer.

OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma City police arrested a man who was once suspected of murdering and dismembering 19-year-old Carina Saunders.

On May 13, a police officer spotted a red Infinity at Interstate 40 and Meridian. The car had a Tennessee license tag. When the officer ran the plate, he discovered the car was stolen out of Knoxville, Tennessee.

The officer pulled over the car and identified the driver as 39-year-old Luis Ruiz. His passenger was 27-year-old Lauren Estephan. Both were taken into custody without incident, and booked into the Oklahoma County jail for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Ruiz was also booked for not having a state driver’s license.

Ruiz spent six months in jail after he was arrested in connection with Saunders’ murder. Her body was found dismembered and stuffed into a duffle bag in October 2011 behind a Bethany grocery store. Murder charges against Ruiz and another man, Jimmy Massey, were dropped in February due to lack of evidence.
