Organizers say Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Hudson will be there
Trayvon Martin was killed on Feb. 26, 2012
On the one-year anniversary of Trayvon Martin’s death, the organizers of the “Million Hoodie March” are asking people to show their support once again.
The group has been Facebooking and tweeting the names of children killed by gun violence since Martin’s death -- children from around the country, like 15-year-old Dakota Bright from Chicago, Illinois, or 3-year-old Julio Segura-McIntosh from Tacoma, Washington.
Organizers have asked people to put their “hoodies up” -- in remembrance of what Martin was wearing when he was killed -- and gather at 6 p.m. ET in Union Square in New York City, with a moment of silence planned for 7:17 p.m. ET. Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Hudson are reportedly planning to be in attendance -- rain or shine.
More than 1,000 Trayvon Martin supporters took to the streets during last year’s march. They wore hoodies and some carried Skittles, the candy 17-year-old Martin bought on the night he was fatally shot while walking to the house of his father's fiancee in Sanford, Florida.
A petition asking that George Zimmerman be charged with Martin’s death received more than 2 million signatures. The state of Florida has since announced it will be bringing second-degree murder charges against Zimmerman, who says he shot the teen in self defense.
Zimmerman’s “Stand Your Ground” hearing is set for April 22. If Zimmerman’s attorneys are successful at the hearing, their client could walk out of court a free man with immunity from prosecution. However, if they don’t convince the judge, Zimmerman will face a full criminal trial on June 10.
