Toddler Toni Gwynn sat restrained in a car seat, gagged with a blanket the afternoon she died, according to arrest warrants issued for her parents.
Antonio and Heather Gwynn were in Rockingham District Court Wednesday to face charges in Toni’s death. She died last week in Eden.
Antonio Gwynn, 22, is in Rockingham County Jail on a $3 million bond. He faces second-degree murder and felony child abuse charges.
Toni’s mother, Heather Gwynn, 22, is being held on a $1 million bond. She faces a charge of felony child abuse.
Arrest warrants provide details about Toni’s last day — July 11.
Antonio Gwynn’s warrant said he restrained her in a car seat for more than 15 hours without food or water.
After 12 hours, he pushed a blanket into her mouth “to stop child from crying and thus restricted the airway causing the child’s death,” the warrant said.
Heather Gwynn caused Toni “serious bodily injury,” according to the warrant.
The parents were arraigned in court at 2 p.m. Wednesday with Judge James Grogan presiding.
Courtroom D was silent as Heather Gwynn arrived in an orange jumpsuit. Her face was pale as Grogan explained her rights.
Her next court date is Aug. 6.
A few moments after she left, husband Antonio Gwynn entered wearing a tan jumpsuit and limping on his right side.
The couple’s other children, a four-month-old and a 4-year-old, have been in the custody of Rockingham County Department of Social Services since Thursday, when Toni was found lifeless at the family’s Prospect Street home.
Larry Johnson, director of social services, said the county had no interactions with the family until Thursday night.

EDEN — Caswell County sheriff’s deputies and a state trooper arrested an Eden couple Tuesday in connection with the death of their 17-month-old daughter.
“I love my kids,” Antonio Maurice Gwynn, 22, told reporters as he was brought into the Eden Police Department on charges of second-degree murder and felony child abuse in the death of Toni Maurie Gwynn.
Heather Gwynn, 22, was in tears as she walked into the police station. She faces a charge of felony child abuse.
Eden police said they found Toni lifeless at the family’s house at 503 Prospect St. on Thursday. They are not saying how the child died and are awaiting results from an autopsy the state medical examiner’s office performed on the baby Friday.
The couple were arrested in Caswell County, where police said they were staying at the vacant home of a relative, who alerted officials to their whereabouts.
Antonio Gwynn ran from law enforcement officials and was found about 45 minutes later in the woods a short distance from the house, police said. He arrived at the police department shirtless.
Eden police were called to 503 Prospect St. at 2:18 p.m. Thursday, where officers found the child was not breathing. Paramedics performed CPR on Toni at the house. She was taken to Morehead Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Police said detectives interviewed the parents concerning the circumstances around the death of their daughter. They asked the couple to re-enact the events that lead to the baby’s death.
While the department conducted its investigation, the couple moved out of their house, police said.
When the police went back for a final interview, they discovered the two were missing. Arrest warrants were issued after the Gwynns didn’t show up Tuesday for a meeting with the Rockingham County Department of Social Services.
The couple’s other two children — a 4-year-old and a 4-month-old — are in the custody of the DSS.
