Two months after a nationwide manhunt helped authorities track down kidnapped California teen Hannah Anderson, she's revealing new details about her conversations with the man who allegedly held her hostage and killed her mother and brother.

In an interview with NBC's "Today" show broadcast Thursday morning, Anderson described the moment she says she realized family friend James DiMaggio was kidnapping her in early August. He had just picked her up from cheerleading practice and took her to his home about an hour east of San Diego -- apparently, she said she'd eventually learn, with her mom and brother hidden somewhere inside.

Anderson says DiMaggio sat her down on a couch, handcuffed her, zip-tied her feet and revealed his plan to kidnap her and drive her to Idaho. The day quickly took an even darker turn, Anderson said, when DiMaggio encouraged her to play Russian roulette with him, using a real gun.

"When it was my turn, I started crying and, like, was freaking out," Anderson said. "And he said, 'Do you want to play?' And I said, 'No,' and I started crying, and he's like, 'OK,' and he stopped."

Anderson said DiMaggio told her that her mother, Christina Anderson, 42, and her brother Ethan, 8, were elsewhere in the house, alive.

Anderson, 16, said that she could hear Ethan.

"I heard him trying to yell upstairs, but he was gagged, so I couldn't do anything to help him," Anderson said. "I was yelling his name. I couldn't do anything."

She said after about two to three hours, DiMaggio drugged her -- with Ambien, she thinks -- and when she woke up, she found herself in Idaho with him.

That's when he told her, she said, that her mother and Ethan still were in the house's garage, and that he had set a timer that would ignite a fire at the home, many hours after DiMaggio and Anderson had left.

DiMaggio told her that he had left signs that would indicate to responding firefighters -- before the fire reached the garage -- where Christina Anderson and Ethan were, Hannah Anderson told "Today."

Authorities would eventually find the remains of Christina Anderson in the burned garage and Ethan's body in another part of the home. Christina Anderson was struck at least 12 times in the head; her right arm and both legs were fractured, and she had a cut on her neck, an autopsy revealed.

The woman's ankles were bound by a plastic cable tie, and duct tape was wrapped around her neck and mouth, her autopsy report said.

Ethan was burned beyond recognition. It was believed, according to the autopsy, that the boy died because of the fire.

After evading authorities for a week, horseback riders spotted DiMaggio and Hannah Anderson in the Idaho wilderness, nearly 1,000 miles from where the alleged kidnapping occurred.

Anderson said DiMaggio told her he'd kill the riders if she spoke to them. DiMaggio spoke to them, and they left, she said.

But those riders, feeling something was amiss and learning that an Amber Alert had been issued, contacted authorities.

When law enforcement teams closed in on the two August 10, DiMaggio was shot dead by an FBI agent and Anderson was taken to a hospital.

Recalling the moments before the shooting, Anderson told "Today" that she and DiMaggio were by a fire, which she said he'd set in an effort to signal for help. She didn't say why he was trying to signal for assistance.

She said she told him that she'd read in a book that firing a gun three times in the air also was a signal for help. So, she said, Anderson fired a gun once in the air, and then a second time -- but with a lowered aim.

"Then a bunch of guns went off. I looked and he fell on the ground," she said. "I kind of looked over, and I was like, 'Are you OK?' And then a bunch of, like, the FBI people came out, telling me to get down."

Anderson said she was told the next day, in the hospital, that her mother, her brother and DiMaggio were dead.

With tears, Anderson said she greatly missed her mother and brother.

"Sometimes it's like I wait for them to get home, and then they're not there," she said.

The nationwide manhunt for DiMaggio drew widespread attention and sparked intense speculation about the case.

Now, the author of a new book is criticizing the teen's behavior and claiming there are inconsistencies in her story, CNN affiliate KGTV reported. An Anderson family spokeswoman told CNN the family has no comment on the book.

Addressing letters between Anderson and DiMaggio that authorities found in his burned home, Anderson told "Today" that she had been writing to DiMaggio, a family friend, because her mother and father had split up.

"Me and my mom really didn't get along a year ago, so when I was having problems with her and I wouldn't have really anyone to talk about it with, me and him, instead of talking face to face if we didn't have time ... we'd just write letters back and forth, talking about, like, the situation and how to get through it," she said.

Her father, Brett Anderson, told "Today" that he and his daughter are working through the ordeal.

"We're getting help and talking with each other and trying to be strong (and) moving forward," he said.

Ok, here's problems I have with her story.

She says Jim wanted her to play Russian Roulette, and handed her the gun. But before that she said he had handcuffed her. So you could hardly play Russian Roulette with your hands handcuffed. He may have handcuffed her on the way to Idaho, but I don't buy she was handcuffed at his house if she was holding a gun. Also if her feet were zip tied, how was she able to move around?

She says she heard Ethan yelling upstairs but she couldn't hear him very good because he was gagged. How does she knew he was gagged?

Also, her description of the shoot out is not how LE described it. She makes it sound like he was just firing in the air - and why would he be trying to signal for help? That makes no sense. And she was worried about him when he was shot and fell over and asked him if he was Ok. Hmmm.

She says after she was in the hospital and was told "they" died and Jim died too, "I thought about it for a second..." Really? A whole second? She starts wiping tears away.

When she is asked about the letters, her tears dry right up and she is talkative again.

Her dad just seems so unmoved by all of this also. I realize he was already separated from mom - either getting divorced or already divorced. But his son being murdered - you'd think that would tear him up more. He just sort of sits there like "are we done yet?"

And according to the LE reports mom's car was there, because that' where they found the DNA testing kit, inside her mom's car. So... yeah, lots of unanswered questions.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Two months after a manhunt helped authorities track down Lakeside teenager Hannah Anderson, she's revealing new details about the man who allegedly kidnapped her and killed her mother, Christina Anderson, and 8-year-old brother, Ethan.

In an interview on the Today Show, Hannah Anderson described when she first learned that family friend James DiMaggio had an evil plan for her. But the teen's interview also revealed apparent inconsistencies in her story.

Sixteen-year-old Hannah Anderson took to the national airwaves Thursday morning to speak again about her alleged kidnapping at the hands of DiMaggio.

"He seemed crazy, yeah. It was really scary. You could tell in his eyes… really scary," she said during the interview.

The teen said things got weird for her after the 40-year-old picked her up at a cheerleading camp and drove her to his Boulevard home in the late afternoon of August 3.

"The point where I realized that something was wrong is when we go to his house and my mom's car wasn't there," she said.

However, in this video reviewed by News 8, Christina Anderson's Chevy Blazer is at the Boulevard home, parked next to the main house, which DiMaggio allegedly set on fire using timed, arson devices. The vehicle's hazard lights are seen blinking in the video.

"He drugged me and I was out, then I woke up in Idaho," Hannah said during the interview. "So I don't remember anything between there."

Anderson said DiMaggio made her take couple of Ambien pills to knock her out during the long drive to Idaho. She said the last thing she remembers is being handcuffed and bound with zip-ties at the ankles on the couch inside DiMaggio's East County home. She said she did not remember getting into DiMaggio's vehicle.

But in a previous NBC, San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said both Hannah and DiMaggio were "awake" when they were captured on surveillance video as they passed through a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint in Pine Valley at midnight.
Sheriff Gore told Dateline NBC the surveillance images show, "him and her, kind of, reclining back in the seat; you know, awake. And at that time they were heading west."

Finally, just minutes before agents moved in and shot DiMaggio to death in the Idaho wilderness, Hannah said he was trying to create a signal, which seems to contrary for someone who had just spent seven days running from the law.

"He was trying to start a fire to signal for help. Then all of a sudden the fire wasn't working. So, I told him, I said well I read in a book that if you fire a gun in the air three times that means S-O-S. So, he went to fire it once and I was watching him. And, then he fired it the second time but he like lowered it. Then a bunch of guns went off and I looked and he fell on the ground," Hannah said.

In her interview, Hannah Anderson never explained who DiMaggio was trying to signal, or why.

Was Hannah Anderson heard rehearsing her story for the 'Today' show interview that airs today? According to one Pierre Hotel employee -- who wishes to remain anonymous for very obvious reasons -- she was. The hotel employee reached out to me privately and shared that she had been eavesdropping while Anderson's "newly hired PR person" coached her on what to say to Savannah Guthrie during their interview. To be clear, the anonymous tipster told me that she had witnessed a "very damning prep meeting."

The Pierre Hotel employee continued to say the following:

"Hannah was corrected numerous times [by her PR woman] to refrain from saying we planned and packed up our things to he and his things."

The anonymous employee of the famous hotel claims that Brett Anderson was present (along with Hannah's grandmother and friend Alan McNabb), but Brett kept getting up and walking away from the table. So what does this mean? If this employee of the Pierre Hotel is being honest, then she witnessed coaching that pretty much changed the tone of the story to try to make her seem more like a victim than she claims to be. If this is something that truly happened, then it is absolutely shameful. So the question to ask now is: Who else saw Hannah Anderson in this area? If she was at the Pierre meeting with her PR agent, then someone should be able to confirm this.

I went with uncertain too, even though she seems highly suspicious to me. Not so sure she's an accomplice, as I agree with Wrap that she's lying by omission.

James Dimaggio had marijuana and prescription drugs in his system when he was fatally shot by the FBI during the Hannah Anderson kidnapping case, according to the Valley County, Idaho coroner.

Coroner Nathan Hess revealed the new information to CBS News 8 in a phone interview. It's a detail a Dimaggio family friend speculated might have affect Dimaggio's mental health before the murders of Christina Anderson and her eight-year-old son Ethan, and the kidnapping of 16-year-old Hannah.

While the manhunt was underway for Dimaggio and the missing teen, family friend Andrew Spanswick, who is also a mental health specialist, told CNN on August 8 that Dimaggio's marijuana use may have impacted his behavior.

"There's always the possibility with the potency of marijuana these days that people could have drug-induced psychosis that might relate to some of this behavior," said Spanswick.

Now month later, Idaho's Valley County coroner said THC, the active chemical found in marijuana, was found during Dimaggio's autopsy but he didn't know the exact amount.

"From my understanding if you smoke marijuana you could still test positive for it a week later. I don't know if was a recent thing," said Hess.

Hess said he also found legal prescription drugs in Dimaggio's system, most likely prescribed by a doctor, but didn't know what specific types of drugs.

"It would say that it is present. It wouldn't say this is doctor prescribed, this is illegal, it wouldn't say anything like that. It would just say, this what was in it," said Hess.

In Idaho, toxicology reports are considered medical records and are protected by HIPPA so there is not public access to the full report.

Despite the toxicology findings, the coroner said the results do not change Dimaggio's cause of death: bullet wounds.

"You could be drunk or stoned or however, it's still going to be—as far as my job--the cause and manner is still going to be multiple gunshot wounds, justifiable homicide," said Hess.

The coroner said Dimaggio died from six gunshot wounds to the head and chest. The FBI shot Dimaggio after tracking him and Hannah to a wilderness area in Idaho, where he fired a shot at investigators.

CBS News 8 spoke to Spanswick late Tuesday night. He said he was not surprised by the toxicology results. Dimaggio family member and representatives have given media interviews saying they believe Dimaggio is innocent and will continue to fight the San Diego Sheriff's Department to release evidence in the case.

Debunking the Myth of a Link Between Marijuana and Mental Illness

NBC News scored a series of scoops recently when its reporters conducted the first and only TV interviews with Brett Anderson and his daughter, Hannah, the California teenager who was abducted and whose mother and brother were murdered.

In TV parlance, the Andersons were big “gets.” The interviews on the “Today” show, “Nightly News” and “Dateline NBC” were hailed by NBC News’s new boss, Deborah Turness, as “a major coup” in a memo to the division’s employees.

But now NBC News plans to take its relationship with the Andersons a step further — into potentially questionable ethical territory.

The network confirmed Tuesday that it is in negotiations with the Andersons to produce “long-form” programming about Hannah Anderson’s abduction in August by a family friend, James Lee DiMaggio Jr. Sources at the network say the Andersons could receive more than $100,000 for their cooperation in the making of a documentary or some other nonfiction program. NBC won’t confirm the figure.

The would-be deal raises an age-old question: Is it ethical for news organizations to pay the people they cover?

This is not the first time a mainstream news outlet has cut a deal to pay subjects of stories; ABC News, for example, has done so in the past, but has since prohibited the practice, which is commonplace in Britain. But in the United States, paying the subjects is typically considered a breach of journalistic standards for several reasons: The money could entice a source to exaggerate the story; it could also compel a news organization to tell only its “partner’s” side of the story, ignoring information that impeaches or undercuts the dramatic tale in which the news organization has an investment.

“You don’t want to give your sources a motivation to distort the truth, and paying them could do that,” said Kelly McBride, an ethics specialist at the Poynter Institute, a journalism-education organization.

Further, readers or viewers might doubt a story’s credibility if they knew a key source had accepted money to be a part of it.

For these reasons, most mainstream news organizations prohibit what has long been derided within the profession as “checkbook journalism,” but which is practiced by such outlets as the National Enquirer, TMZ.com and Gawker.com.

NBC News said it didn’t pay 16-year-old Hannah Anderson or her father for their cooperation in the interviews it aired in August and October. “NBC News never pays for interviews,” said Ali Zelenko, a spokeswoman, in an interview.

But an NBC News subsidiary, Peacock Productions, is working out final details of a financial agreement with the Andersons. Peacock produces documentaries and specials, featuring NBC News journalists. Among others, it was behind a recent MSNBC program called “Hubris: Selling the Iraq War,” hosted by Rachel Maddow, and a chronicle of actress Valerie Harper’s struggle with cancer, “Valerie’s Story,” hosted by Meredith Vieira on NBC.

NBC News said it saw no journalistic issues in securing the Andersons’ cooperation for a documentary. The network said it isn’t paying the father and daughter for interviews on the project. Instead, the representative said, the network is compensating them for the use of “footage and personal material.”

Despite a stated ban on paying sources, network news operations often find other ways to secure the exclusive cooperation of newsworthy subjects. A typical technique is to pay a source to “license” his or her personal photos or home movies. CNN, for example, was among several news organizations that paid a Dutch tourist $18,000 for cellphone images of the arrest of the alleged “underwear bomber” who tried to blow up an international jetliner on Christmas Day in 2010. CNN aired an interview with the tourist, Jasper Schuringa, who helped subdue the alleged bomber. The network said the interview was unrelated to its payments for Schuringa’s photos.

Such “licensing” agreements — which are almost never disclosed to viewers — enable news outlets to claim they didn’t pay for interviews.

That appears to be what NBC News is doing with the Andersons, said Kevin Z. Smith, the chairman of the ethics committee of the Society of Professional Journalists. “No matter how they couch it, they’re offering money in exchange for an exclusive story,” he said. “The networks have figured out new and different approaches” to paying sources.

In fact, NBC News and ABC News acknowledged that they paid the families of three rescued Chilean miners who were featured on “Good Morning America” and the “Today” show in 2010. The networks didn’t disclose how much they paid but said on the air that they had “licensed” home video footage used in their stories.

Lawyers for Casey Anthony, the Florida woman acquitted of killing her young daughter, revealed during a court appearance in 2010 that ABC News paid $200,000 for her cooperation in its coverage of the story.

ABC News subsequently said it has banned the practice of paying for stories, a position it reiterated again this week.

Hannah Anderson said she was abducted by DiMaggio, who police say killed Hannah’s mother and younger brother in Southern California before fleeing with the teenager to a remote corner of Idaho. After a multistate manhunt, DiMaggio was killed by FBI agents. Anderson wasn’t physically injured.

It’s unclear when NBC’s documentary on the case will air, or on which network. (NBC’s parent company, Comcast Corp., owns multiple channels on cable and broadcast TV, and Peacock often sells programs to unaffiliated networks). A spokeswoman for the Andersons did not return calls and e-mails seeking comment.

Hannah Anderson has given two “exclusive” interviews to NBC, the first conducted in San Diego in August shortly after DiMaggio’s death and the second in early October in New York, with her father seated by her side. An NBC representative said she agreed to speak to the network because “we were the only news outlet that offered Hannah an opportunity to thank the rescuers before her mother and brother’s funeral.”

McBride, of the Poynter Institute, noted that fierce competition for big “gets” — particularly among the network morning shows — creates incentives to offer money to news sources. But if the practice can’t be eliminated, she said, the next best step is to disclose it to viewers.

“They could be transparent about the decisions they’ve made,” McBride said. “There are ways to create transparency mechanisms,” such as a network Web site that discloses how much was paid to which source and for what purpose.

Of course, she added, such disclosures might have the perverse effect of driving up the value of interviews and photos for the networks and others.

A petition is now live that is demanding the release of detailed evidence from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, regarding the alleged kidnapping of Hannah Anderson. The petition is on Change.Org, and it directly addresses San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore before going into a detailed list of information that the public deserves to know about the murders of Christina and Ethan Anderson as well as information surrounding the alleged kidnapping of the 16-year-old girl.

The petitions asks for:
*Fingerprint evidence associated with the alleged murder weapons.
*Whose DNA was on the condoms found in DiMaggio's garage?
*What evidence was taken from the campsite where Jim DiMaggio was shot dead?

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department refuses to release a host of evidence associated with this case, such as the contents of letters that Hannah had written to the man accused of killing her mom and brother. They've refused to provide the evidence to the conclusion they made that "Hannah Anderson is a victim in every sense of the word."
