DALLAS (AP) — A 22-year-old mother was facing child abuse charges Friday after police say she glued her toddler daughter's hands to a wall, kicked her in the stomach and beat her over a potty training issue.

Joselyn Cedillo, 2, was on life support with multiple internal injuries at a Dallas hospital Thursday, The Dallas Morning News reported (http://dallasne.ws/pKJtEb ). A hospital spokeswoman told The Associated Press she had no information on the girl Friday.

The newspaper, citing police records, said glue and paint were stuck to Joselyn's palms, and that skin had torn away in places.

Joselyn's mother, Elizabeth Escalona, was crying and hysterical when she called her own mother Wednesday morning from her Dallas apartment, according to police records. The records show that when the grandmother arrived at the apartment, her granddaughter was unconscious on the floor. She took her to the hospital.

One of the girl's brothers said their mother kicked the child in the stomach and beat her with a belt and shoe, according to police records.

Another sibling said she couldn't sleep during the night because she heard her mother yelling and the girl crying. She said Joselyn had been having difficulty with potty training. She said Escalona dragged Joselyn by her feet from the kitchen to another part of the apartment, put glue on her hands and stuck them to the wall.

"This is beyond abuse," said Dallas police Sgt. Brenda Nichols. "This is torture."

A pediatrician said the girl had "severe life-threatening head and internal injuries" and was in a coma, according to police records.

Escalona is being held on $500,000 bond on a felony injury to a child charge that carries a sentence of up to life in prison. Her attorney didn't immediately return a phone call from the AP seeking comment.

Child Protective Services has taken custody of the girl and her three siblings, said agency spokeswoman Julie Moody. She said she could not discuss the family's history with CPS.

DALLAS - A two-year-old girl is in critical condition in the hospital and her mother is charged with torturing her and inflicting the damage that put her there.

Police said the abuse started with a frantic call from 22-year-old Elizabeth Escalona to her mother, saying something was wrong with her two year old daughter, Joselyn Cedillo.

When the child's grandmother got to the home she could see just what was wrong. The little girl was unresponsive.

A relative tells News 8 the child had broken bones, bruises and head injuries. The grandmother and other relatives desperately tried to help Joselyn and rushed her to Children’s Medical Center of Dallas.

“We just know we picked up the baby and she was hurt," the child's aunt told News 8.

According to police records, Joselyn suffered greatly.

According to police reports, Escalona dragged her daughter by her feet from the kitchen area to another part of the apartment. She then glued her child’s hands and stuck them to the wall until they bled. She then allegedly hit the girl in the stomach with a jug of milk, kicked her in the stomach and beat her with a shoe and a belt.

“Yeah she was extremely bruised," the aunt said. "She had a head concussion, she had a broken leg and broken ribs. We don't know how it happened, but she was covered in bruises."

Police said numerous people say they'd seen Escalona inflict pain on the child in the past. Now, the little girl may have extensive brain damage and countless injuries.

"She was a good kid," the aunt said. "She's playful like any other kid. Spoiled and she's like a little princess."

Police said the torture began because the little girl soiled in her pants, and this was her punishment.

Dallas police child abuse detectives arrested Escalona for injury to a child. Child Protective Services has taken custody of Joselyn and three other siblings.

Well its Texas and they have the death penalty and if anyone deserves it this thing does. I cant call her a person. Im sure there will be more on this
case its just so disheartening to wake up and read about these horrors inflicted on small children and to read that other people knew and no one did anything about it. When I was walking the dogs at the park last week
I saw a couple of women talking near the sandbox and then down the hill came a little girl walking toward the street by herself. I called out to her and said hey where are you going and she turned and walked toward the fenced in playground of the school. I went to the sandbox and asked the women is that your child and she said yes she walks around like that by herself all the time - she knows her way back. I was so furious I told her off - everyone at the park just stopped and looked at us. She didnt say a word didnt get up just turned her back on me.
No one else said a word either. I just stalked off but people were embarrassed and thats the problem with speaking up many people dont want the attention on themselves for making an issue of something even though its the right thing to do. I turned as I walked away and she had gotten up to go get her child.

WTF ? Those *numerous* people who've witnessed that poor child being abused should have reported this to LE!!!!! I hope they feel guilty for the rest of their lives for not reporting this!!!!
We need a law nationwide that stipulates it is a crime not to report abuse, even if people do it anonymously!

Mad because a 2 yr old soiled their pants? Good grief, in my family potty training doesn't even START till the kids are at least 3 years old. Trying to "train" a 2 yr old to use the toilet regularly is an exercise in futility. I'm sure some kids are ready when they are in their 2's- approaching 3-, but not many. JMO. And to PUNISH a 2 yr old for such a thing is ridiculous. Shows the level of maturity of the parent, IMO.

And ITA we need a nationwide law that stipulates it's a crime to NOT report abuse, or even suspected abuse.

JVM has this story on -they showed a previous case where a mother
duct taped a child to a wall and the mother got 3 months and 2 years probation. Whose fault is that? Is the justice system so crazed that this is the most punishment we can give for torture?

Post by Wrapitup Fri Sep 30, 2011 11:47 pm

A Texas toddler whose hands were glued to a wall is out of the hospital, but her mother remains jailed.

DALLAS (September 15, 2011)--A Texas toddler is out of the hospital a week after her mother allegedly glued her hands to a wall.

The 2-year-old was in a coma for two days after the incident on Sept. 7.

Dallas police say the girl’s mother was mad about the youngster's potty training problems.

The toddler was also kicked repeatedly in the stomach, police said.

Elizabeth Escalona, 22, remains jailed on a charge of felony injury to a child.

At a court hearing Wednesday, a Dallas County judge ordered the toddler and her three siblings to remain in foster care.

Some of the mother's friends told WFAA-TV that Escalona snapped under the pressure.

KDFW-TV reported that in 2007, Escalona was ordered to take parenting classes and undergo counseling, but Child Protective Services didn't remove her children.

So, she survived. Out of her coma, out of hospital and in Foster Care? This article lacks many details. Does she have any brain damage? Is she in special foster care w/a nurse? Are all the kids together???

DALLAS -- During a court hearing on Wednesday, a judge ruled to keep two-year-old Joselyn Cedillo and her siblings in the custody of Child Protective Services.

The Dallas girl, who police said was tortured by her mother, will be released from the hospital on Wednesday too. Police said they were amazed that the little girl survived considering what they said was done to her by her mother.

Dallas police arrested Joselyn’s mother, 22- year-old Elizabeth Escalona last week. Police said Escalona glued her daughter’s hands to the wall until they bleed and then beat the toddler until she stopped breathing. She faces felony charges.

Cedilla was on a respirator for several days, but has since recovered.

In court Wednesday, the judge not only made the announcement that the little girl is recovering, but her father could not take custody of her just yet. A home study must be done first to determine what is best for them. The father of her other siblings was given the same court order in order to gain custody of the children.

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – It looks like a severely beaten two-year old Dallas child could soon be released from the hospital.

When Joselyn Cedillo was first admitted to Children’s Medical Center a week ago she was in critical condition and there were doubts she would pull through.

Now officials with Texas Child Protective Services (CPS) confirm the toddler has recovered enough that she may be released as soon as Wednesday afternoon.

The little girl’s mother, Elizabeth Escalona, is accused of gluing her daughter’s hands to a wall, kicking her in the stomach and beating her. The child’s grandmother found her unresponsive, and took her to the hospital.

Escalona, 22, remains in jail on $500,000 bond, facing felony charges of injury to a child.

A hearing was held Wednesday morning to decide what will happen to the injured toddler and Escalona’s other three children.

“The judge decided that the two-year-old girl and her three siblings will remain in foster care for now,” explained Marissa Gonzales, with CPS.

There are two different fathers among the four children and both have made custody inquiries. “We will be doing home studies on each of the fathers, so that the judge can take a look at them and decide whether of not the children might be able to be placed with them sometime in the future,” Gonzales said.

Background checks are also being performed on the men.

CPS officials said they were not aware of any other reports of abuse involving the children.

DALLAS - Her recovery is being called amazing. Two-year-old Joselyn Cedillo left Children’s Medical Center of Dallas Wednesday afternoon. The child was in a coma for two days after police said she was tortured by her mother.

A hearing was held Wednesday in the courtroom of Dallas County Associate Judge Christine Collie. She ordered Joselyn and her three siblings remain in foster care.

On the morning of Sept. 7, the day Joselyn was rushed to the hospital, her mother, Elizabeth Escalona, changed her Facebook profile picture to a picture of her and Joselyn and posted the following, “Why does God put obstacles in my life?"

Escalona now sits in jail accused of torturing her daughter by gluing her hands to the wall, hitting her in the stomach with a milk jug and stomping on her.

In court, the girl's father and other family members asked a judge to let them have custody of Joselyn and her siblings. But Child Protective Services and Collie agreed the children are better off in foster care for now.

“The plan is to put them all together right now, until we can figure out family placement or placement with dads," said the guardian ad litem for the children, Tony Olvera.

Joselyn's father, Israel Cedillo, left the courtroom in tears.

News 8 asked him if he would comment on his daughter, but he said he was too emotional to talk. However he said he does want custody of her and his son, Israel Jr.

The father of Escalona’s other two children also wants custody of them.

As for Escalona, family and friends said they don't excuse what she allegedly did, but say the 22-year-old mother was an abused child herself and had her first baby at the age of 14.

News 8 has learned she is now pregnant with her fifth child.

On her Facebook page, a friend defended her saying "[Escalona] always loved those kids."

A family friend also told News 8 Escalona doted over her children. An Facebook post by Escalona said she was happy her kids had fun after school one day.

Those close to her said the young mother snapped under the pressure.

They will take the fifth child as well. Many years ago I had to take my step-grandchildren away from my stepson and his girl friend -they had twins. My step son was later arrested and went to jail and his rights were relinquished but the girl did fight us for custody.
She showed up for a hearing about one year later (in L.A. thats how long it takes for these things) and she had a baby in a stroller which she told me was my step sons - I knew it wasnt true and I sat down and talked to her and told her the right thing to do was to let us keep the twins as I knew she and also her mother who was a mess, couldnt care for them. She agreed and we got custody. She eventually gave up the little boy I saw that day. That was 17 years ago and the twins which were taken care of by their grandmother my husbands exwife are now getting ready for college and are wonderful. The girl eventually got her life on track got married and has two boys and is in touch with the boy she gave up. If they would just realize that things can change if they have the courage to stop getting pregnant and give the children up if they cant take care of them, they have a chance but family members must get involved to help them understand what has to be done.

So well put, Art!! I think that these girls keep getting pregnant because they think the "baby daddy" will "come around" and be with them. I call it "magical thinking".

That is why they don't give the baby up for adoption. When they finally see that the dad wants nothing to do with them, many do turn to a family member to pick up the pieces and raise the child. I find this to be despicable and selfish. I think it's Extremely selfish to bring a child into this world with no forethought or readiness to be a real mother to a child. They don't stay babies forever.

Art, what you did was very humble. You did the right thing. You're a great person!! Thanks for the story. Couple Hugging

A mother who admitted that she glued her toddler’s hands to a wall faces a sentencing hearing today in a Dallas courtroom.

Elizabeth Escalona, 23, pleaded guilty to injury to a child in July. She faces up to life in prison for her crimes but is also eligible for deferred adjudication probation.

State District Judge Larry Mitchell will decide her sentence following testimony at the Frank Crowley Courts Building.

Police say she was frustrated with 2-year-old Jocelyn Cedillo because of a “potty training issue.” Besides using super glue to stick her to the wall at their Love Field-area apartment, she also kicked her in the stomach and hit her with a milk jug.

The abuse in September 2011 left the little girl in a coma for two days at Children’s Medical Center, with extensive bruising, brain swelling, fractured bones, swollen intestines, bruised lungs and an injured liver.

On the day Jocelyn was injured, Escalona wrote on a Facebook page: “Why does God put obstacles in my life?” and changed her profile photo to one of her and Jocelyn.

One of the Jocelyn’s siblings described the girl “pooping in her pants” before Escalona dragged her by her feet from the kitchen to another part of the apartment, police records show.

Police records show that Jocelyn’s siblings told investigators that their mother kicked the girl in the stomach, hit her with a jug of milk, a belt and a shoe. They said Escalona then put glue on Jocelyn’s hands and glued them to the wall.

Escalona’s mother rushed Joselyn to the hospital after Escalona called her, crying and hysterical, according to police records. The woman found Joselyn unresponsive on the floor beside a bed at a northwest Dallas apartment.

The girl has recovered from her injuries. She and her siblings were taken into state custody after their mother’s arrest.

UPDATES:

Evidence photos shown this morning show little Jocelyn with bruises, cuts and bite marks all over her body shortly after she was brought to Children’s Medical Center Dallas.

Some of her hair had been pulled out and there was glue in her eyelashes and on her hands.

Also on her hands was white paint chips that came off the wall from which she was glued. Chipped blue nail polish could be seen on her fingers

Rulers were used to measure the injuries and the size of the toddler. Jocelyn’s back measured just six inches wide.

Dr. Amy Barton, a child abuse pediatrician who worked at the hospital at the time, testified about the injuries.

Asked what was remarkable about the injuries, she began to cry.

“The entire picture was very shocking,” Barton said. “I see a lot of children and this was one of the most shocking things that I’ve seen.”

As a Dallas police detective testified later in the morning, evidence photos were shown of Escalona’s apartment. The photos were taken during a search of the apartment after Joselyn was hospitalized.

On the kitchen counter, police spotted a green container of super glue. On a nearby wall, they photographed two small handprints.

Investigators cut the section of wall out and it was presented here in court today.

She has a total of 5 children the smallest a baby which her grandmother takes care of. I think that is a huge mistake - they should have found another home for them.

That poor child's eyes look dead in the picture on her mother's Facebook. This beating wasn't her first beating.

Does anyone know if the child has any lasting brain damage? The article said that she has "recovered". What does that mean?
