Christopher Valdez age 4 of Chicago beaten to death by mothers boyfriend on his birthday - mother concealed bruises with makeup
The mother of Christopher Valdez, the 4-year-old boy killed on his birthday last Friday in Chicago, has been charged alongside her boyfriend in her son's death.
Crystal Valdez, 28, was charged with the concealment of a homicidal death and endangering the life of a child, while her live-in boyfriend Cesar Ruiz, 34, was charged with first-degree murder, concealment of a homicidal death and for having a suspended drivers license, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Christopher was found dead by police when they arrived at Valdez and Ruiz's home on the 5100 block of South Trumbull Avenue in Chicago about 2:10 p.m. Friday. The boy was found to have died from multiple blunt force trauma and his death was ruled a child abuse homicide Saturday.
Police were alerted to Christopher's death when he was discovered by his aunt and her husband, who had come to investigate after a neighbor told them that Christopher was sporting a black eye when he attended Thanksgiving at their home the previous day, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Christopher was found with his bruises covered in makeup concealer, according to the Sun-Times. Christopher's family pointed out to the paper that the boy's mother had been convicted on Oct. 21 of domestic battery. An Illinois Department of Children and Family Services investigation had previously shown that she had neglected her child. Christopher had three other siblings.
Steven Valdez, the boy's great uncle, previously described Ruiz, his niece's boyfriend, as anti-social and violent, NBC Chicago reported. He said that two weeks before the boy's death, Ruiz beat a dog severely after it relieved itself in his home.
Both Christopher's mother and Ruiz are slated to appear in bond court Monday.

This case really got to me - we read so many horrific cases but this one just really did me in. If someone has reported the beating of the dog from the week before
maybe the child would have been saved. Life was cheap in that house & classic signs of a child in danger are when animals are abused. I HATE these people really really hate them.

Re: Christopher Valdez age 4 of Chicago beaten to death by mothers boyfriend on his birthday - mother concealed bruises with makeup
t was supposed to be a happy day for Christopher Valdez. He was turning four and his family was preparing for the celebration. Sadly, he did not make it through the day, and police are now accusing his mother of covering up marks left by the man suspected of beating him to death, her boyfriend.
Crystal Valdez, 28, and her boyfriend Cesar Ruiz were arrested for their parts in the death of Valdez’s 4-year-old son Christopher who police say was brutally beaten to death on his birthday.
Ruiz, 34, has been charged with first-degree murder and concealment of a homicidal death.
After examiners revealed that the bruises on Christopher’s body had been covered with concealer, the boy’s mother was arrested and charged with concealment of a homicidal death and endangering the life of a child causing death.
Last month, a Cook County judge allowed Valdez to avoid jail time after being convicted of battering the same child in July. She was told to take parenting classes and was given a conditional discharge.
ImageRuiz was described as being anti-social and violent, and is said to have savagely beat a dog that had urinated inside the house.
Friday, Valdez’s brother Joe and sister-in-law Katrine Valdez went over to the house after hearing from a neighbor that Christopher was seen with a black eye Thanksgiving Day.
When they arrived at the home, they had to force their way past the boy’s mother, to see the house in disarray, and Christopher’s 5-year-old sister laying in the floor next to a blanket. The boy’s uncle and Ruiz then got into an altercation, but he was eventually able to call 911.
When police arrived, it was determined that Christopher had already been dead for hours.
Prosecutors allege that his mother not only failed to call 911 herself, but that she helped Ruiz try to cover up the murder, as make-up concealer was found on all over his bruise-riddled body which had been wrapped in the blanket his sister was laying next to.
The Cook County Medical Examiner ruled that he death was caused by blunt force trauma.

Re: Christopher Valdez age 4 of Chicago beaten to death by mothers boyfriend on his birthday - mother concealed bruises with makeup
The mother covered his bruises with makeup to protect her boyfriend... stupid BITCH should have been protecting her CHILD instead!!! I'm glad that LE is holding her equally accountable!
and the part about his older sister laying next to the blanket her dead brother was wrapped in really got to me. Why was she there? Was she grieving and trying to comfort her little brother OR was her mother making her lay there as punishment with the threat that the same might happen to her?
Punish these people, they deserve it!

Re: Christopher Valdez age 4 of Chicago beaten to death by mothers boyfriend on his birthday - mother concealed bruises with makeup
A Southwest Side boy found fatally beaten on his fourth birthday had been abused repeatedly by his mother and her boyfriend, who used makeup to conceal the child's bruises, prosecutors said Monday.
Cesar Ruiz, 34, and Crystal Valdez, 28, were each charged with first-degree murder and concealment of a homicide in the death of Valdez's son, Christopher.
Bail was set at $2.5 million for Ruiz and $750,000 for Valdez by Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr.
Valdez bowed her head and sniffled during the hearing, sobbed loudly and then said, "I didn't do anything!" as she was led out of the courtroom to the lockup.
Last month, Valdez had been found guilty of domestic battery for a beating in July that left Christopher with a black eye, swelling and bruises, records show. In that case, she was sentenced to one year of conditional discharge and ordered to take parenting classes.
But Christopher was allowed to remain in his mother's care after an investigation by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services found in August that allegations of abuse were "unfounded," agency spokesman Jimmie Whitelow said.
The agency found "credible evidence" to support a finding of child neglect against Valdez, Whitelow said. He could not provide more specific information or say whether the agency took any action against Valdez as a result of the neglect finding.
On Thanksgiving, relatives noticed Christopher had a swollen eye and bruises on his body and was throwing up, Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Maureen Hughes said.
When Valdez's brother and sister-in-law went to Valdez's home in the 5100 block of South Trumbull Avenue on Friday, they found Christopher dead, under a blanket, with "bruises all over his body" that had been covered up with makeup, Hughes said.
"(Valdez) started yelling that (Ruiz) did it," Hughes said. "(Ruiz) then said he was sorry."
Ruiz admitted in a videotaped statement to police that he grabbed the boy, spanked him and hit him in the side several times, then covered the boy's injuries with makeup, Hughes said. Valdez also admitted that she hit her son and said she had seen her boyfriend hitting Christopher and "kneeing him in the stomach repeatedly" on Thanksgiving and again Friday.
DCFS placed Christopher's 5-year-old sister with relatives after the boy's death, according to Whitelow. Court records show Valdez has two other children, 11 and 10, who were already in the care of relatives at the time.
Ruiz's sister, Maria Castillo, said outside court that her brother was not a violent person. She said Christopher never should have been allowed to stay with his mother after her conviction.
"I can't sleep at night thinking about what happened to that child," Castillo said. "I'm so sorry for that."

Re: Christopher Valdez age 4 of Chicago beaten to death by mothers boyfriend on his birthday - mother concealed bruises with makeup
Well what do you know, finally - the mother was also charged with first degree murder - its about time that women that allow abusive boyfriends into their lives to torture and kill children get the same charge as the boyfriend. In this case, the mother was as abusive as the boyfriend. May they rot in hell.
