Police: Mom Locked Boy, 2, In Closet

MESA, Ariz. -- A 2-year-old boy was found locked in a closet in a Mesa apartment Monday night, according to Maricopa County Constable Fred Arnett.
His mother, Corrina May Davis, 21, is charged with two counts of child abuse.
Arnett said he discovered the boy while serving an eviction notice at Del Coronado Apartments on South Longmore Street.
"I found the child laying there, basically in the fetal position," Arnett said. "It appeared that this (the closet) was this child's actual living quarters."
"The problem that I had was there was no visible water of any kind, there was no food. There was nothing this child could do to even sustain life," he said.
Court documents obtained by CBS 5 News say the child appeared to have suffered physical and sexual abuse.
The probable cause statement says the boy had "bruising of different colors on both sides of his face, a chipped tooth, a cut and a bruised lip, bruising to his ears, bruising to his hip" and blood coming from his genitals.
Arnett said he was most disturbed by the child's response to him.
"Any 2- or 3-year-old at least cries," said the father of two young girls. "This child wouldn't even cry. This child wouldn't laugh or smile to anything we would do. In any of our attempts to get a reaction out of this child, there was nothing."
"He was so floppy and lifeless. It's like he had given up. There was no fight in this child," said Arnett.
Corinna May Davis
In court records, Davis admitted to locking her son in the closet and leaving him alone while she went to work.
Davis denied abusing her son.
She told police he is "clumsy" and "walks into walls."
The boy is in CPS custody.
Arnett said he is grateful he discovered the child when he did.
"I can at least sleep better at night knowing he has to be in a better condition than he was last night," he said.

OMG! That poor little boy!! Thank God he's still alive and away from his lunatic mother. This is absolutely heartbreaking I can't begin to imagine how much he suffered in his short life.

Again, another young mother...apparently not wanting a child...with a child. Where are all of the "others" in her life? It seems as though so many are plain apathetic. What a poor child. And, who was sexually abusing him? Again, makes me ill.

MESA – 3TV is learning more about the Mesa mom accused of leaving her baby home alone locked in a closet.
This is not the first run-in Corinna Davis has had with law enforcement. According to court records, bruising to the boy's face was previously investigated. Davis said the bruises came from a fall down the stairs.
While she calls herself a proud mother on one website, another lists her as an escort. She calls herself “Barbie” on Myspace and in another ad on backpage.com filed under adult entertainment and escorts.
Davis also posted several pictures on the website, some are graphic in nature. The ad says she accepts donations and her rates are firm. She also claims she is not a prostitute but asks you to certify you are not a part of law enforcement.
Mesa police arrested Davis for allegedly leaving her 2-year-old boy home alone locked in a closet on Tuesday.
A constable serving an eviction notice was checking the apartment for occupants and reportedly found a chair braced against the bedroom door to stop someone from getting out. That is when he moved it and found the boy sleeping on a mattress in the closet.
According to court records the toddler had a chipped tooth, a bruised lip, bruising to his face, ears and hip.
His mom's excuse was that the toddler is clumsy and walks into walls. Davis admits to leaving her son home alone and says her boyfriend was supposed to be there 20 minutes after she left for work. She also admits to spanking her son but denies any further abuse.
Davis is on house arrest at her father's home and declined comment. 3TV spoke with her boyfriend in regard to the escort advertisement. He says Davis wanted to be a model and responded to an ad on Craigslist. He also says she was taken advantage of and is not an escort.
In the meantime her son is safe with Child Protective Services.

House arrest at her father's home? I won't even comment on the fact that she has been released. But I'd like to know how many people saw something was wrong and did nothing about it or how many times it had been reported and CPS didn't remove him.

There is noooo way she would be out already if she had done something like this to an adult. Heck, she'd be in more trouble if she had a dog found in that condition! What is going on? Why are children being treated like they are less than human? Treated as if they are dispensible! Not only are they being neglected and abused by people that should love them and that they should be able to trust, but the system fails them too.

The Escort
According to police, a male subject arrived at the apartment at approximately 5:30 p.m. and said he was there to take care of his girlfriend's son. He said his girlfriend, Corinna May Davis, left for work around 4:30 p.m. and left the child in the closet. The man told police he was stuck in traffic and it took him longer to get there than he expected, according to Wessing.
Police said Davis admitted to leaving her son in the closet alone, saying her boyfriend told her he would be home in 20 minutes. She also admitted to spanking her son with her hand and causing the bruises on his hip, but denied any other abuse.

Time and again I am utterly shocked at the light sentences for child abusers and child killers too.
The crime has to be so heinous that they cannot ignore it, then they will take a more severe approach.
The way that the child responded to his rescuer makes me wonder if the child will ever be "normal" again. One thing I do know, this woman needs to have her parental rights terminated and she needs a long sentence in jail. And whomever responded from DCF regarding this child previously needs to be investigated as well.

Web Site: Mom Advertised As Escort
Sarah Buduson Reporter, KPHO.com

UPDATED: 8:50 am MST January 28, 2010
MESA, Ariz. -- The mother accused of locking her 2-year-old son in a closet, Corrina Davis, 21, advertised herself as an escort named “Barbie” on a Web site called backpage.com.
Her ad includes a pornographic picture and lewd language. Her ad says, “...both girls and guys are welcome to call me I can take care of both. I promise you won’t be disappointed. I am available all day.” The ad goes on to say, “This is not an offer of, and/or for solicitation or prostitution. Fees charged are for time spent only.”
On her MySpace page, Davis posted a video that gives a how-to lesson on making a “bleezy,” or a marijuana-filled cigar. She also appears to be smoking a bong in one of her pictures.
The Web page also shows Davis has a softer side. It says she is a “Proud mother of one little boy.” There are several videos of her son, who looks healthy, running around and dancingg.
She also writes, “I'm not much of the party girl . . . that all came to a halt when I got pregnant. I don't like having my son babysat so that mommy can go out and party.”
Maricopa County Constable Fred Arnett said he found Davis’ 2-year-old boy locked in a dark closet Monday night. Arnett had gone to the apartment to evict Davis.
He said the boy was covered in bruises and had a lot of tooth decay. Arnett also said it appeared the boy was forced to stay in the closet on a regular basis. “It appeared that this was the child’s actual living quarters,” he said. “The problem that I had was there was no visible water of any kind, there was no food. There was nothing this child could do to even sustain life.”

Tooth decay @ 2 yr. old! One of the previous articles also stated he had evidence of sexual abuse.
So she was a pot-head, a prostitute and who knows what else. Oh, a child abuser.
And, it sounds as though she was somewhat close to her parents...again...where were they? Why did they not intervene?

My parents live 1,000 miles away, but I can guarantee if there is something going on with one of my kids--even the 2 year old--they pick up on it. If they're upset because mommy made them pick up their toys, my parents will pick up on it. If they are sick, they pick up on it. I really don't see how the grandparents can not notice something like this--and even worse, not act on it. If I did anything like that to one of my children, they would come down on me like a hurricane--and rightfully so.

Looks like she is another pathetic drug user, obviously a liar, and as for her being a Mommy.. BULLSCHIDT! There needs to be a place for people like her. This country should buy an island a good long way from any civilization and dump these people there and let them do what they will do to one another. (After a sterilization procedure of course)

Blood coming out of his genitals almost made me throw up breakfast. Chipped tooth, dental decay, that must be from lack of healthy foods and vitamins. This crazy a$$ witch ought to be locked in a small dirty, smelly closet, with no food, no water, in a fetal position and catatonic. If I hear that she has gotten custody back of him, I am losing all sense of right with the justice system. Think of the people that would love to have had that two yr old child and not have treated him worse than you would treat an animal.

Where is the child now? will they give him back to her eventually? Whats the max sentence she can get?
This type of abuse can last a child a lifetime= why dont they consider that? That a child can be hurt throught his entire life because of this? I want to know who the prosecutor is - I want to write a letter stating this woman needs to be prosecuted to the fullest extend of the law and her parental rights be terminated. None of this bull about going to "parenting classes" You cannot teach these monsters anything.

this boy had no fight in him whatsoever
Constable Fred Arnett says he's never seen anything like what he saw Monday. Arnett found the 2-year-old boy locked in a dark closet while he was serving an eviction notice on the Mesa apartment.
"What was disturbing was right when I walked in the entire property was completely overrun with trash. There was a dog in there and there was dog waste all over the entire apartment," he says.
Arnett entered to change the locks, and found a chair lodged against the outside of a bedroom door.
"I then noticed that the closet was also shut and had a handbag and some other weighted items to keep that from being opened… that's when I found the child in the fetal position basically lifeless."
According to police, the boy had no access to food or water, and there were bruises all over his body.
"Finally as I went to touch him his eyes briefly opened and he looked up at me and just gave a little kind of a groan… this boy had no fight in him whatsoever," recalls Arnett.
"It's a sick feeling and nobody likes to see a child being neglected by that… the dog that was in the property seemed to be cared for above this child."
The little boy is in protective custody, after getting checked out at a hospital and released.

Artgal, I like your idea. Tomorrow, I'll check to see who the prosecuter is assigned to this case.

Have not been able to get the specific prosecutor or prosecution team (although I would think it's been assigned by now), but here is the information on the county attorney that filed the complaint of 2 felonys on Friday. Perhaps he will be taking this himself?

Cousin Talks About Boy Locked In Closet

PHOENIX -- A cousin the 2-year-old boy found locked in a closet feared the child was in trouble. “I did kind of see it coming,” said Lena Harbison. During Christmas, Harbison said she and other relatives noticed the boy seemed to be developmentally behind other kids his age. "He wasn't as advanced. He wasn't even putting words together in sentences,” she said. She also said the boy’s mother, Corrina Davis, 21, seemed detached from her son. "She didn't seem right as a mother. She didn't seem like she was comfortable being around him,” Harbison said. Harbison said she never saw any evidence the boy was being abused or saw Davis engage in violent behavior, but said Davis was investigated for child abuse allegations last year after the boy’s father complained to Child Protective Services about unexplained bruises.
Harbison also said no members of their family knew Davis was advertising herself online as an escort. She lists herself as "Barbie" on a Web site called backpage.com.
Davis was arrested last week after a Maricopa County constable found her son locked in her bedroom closet. In court documents, Davis admitted leaving the boy there while she went to work. However, she denied she caused the bruises that were found on the boy’s hip, ears, lip, and face. The boy is in CPS custody. Davis has been charged with two counts of child abuse. She is under house arrest.

I'm sure this cousin and other family are feeling really horrible right now. This is a very good example of why we should "investigate" when things don't seem quite right with a child. Everyone's so afraid of falsely accusing someone that these children continue to suffer. Although I feel for the family, I also think that if they knew she had been investigated for child abuse before then they certainly should have started asking some questions at Christmas when they noticed things didn't seem right. I wonder where the bio dad is in all this--according to the article he's the one that reported her last year.
