It's been almost six months since a Florida jury found Casey Anthony not guilty of murder in the 2008 death of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee. Since then, the court of public opinion has continued to question the verdict and the case the prosecution presented.
One very important person involved in that case was Dr. Jan Garavaglia, or Dr. G, as she's known to fans of her TLC series "Dr. G: Medical Examiner." Six months after the disappearance of Caylee, with only skeletonized remains, hair, duct tape and a few weathered objects to work with, Garavaglia concluded that "the cause of death will be listed as homicide by undetermined means."
It was Garavaglia's determination that allowed prosecutors to move forward and charge Anthony with murder, but many believe the "undetermined means" part of that also allowed the jury to return a verdict of not guilty.
According to NBC news correspondent Kerry Sanders, that may be because of what's called the "CSI"-factor, "an expectation among jurors today that a medical examiner will present high-tech, flashy, convincing forensic evidence."
But in an upcoming TLC special, Dr. G will try to piece the forensic case back together and explain why the jury dismissed some of her findings. She'll also fire back at a defense expert who, during the trial, took the stand and referred to the autopsy she performed as "shoddy."
"My job is not to determine who did it," Garavaglia explained during a Thursday morning interview on TODAY. "My job is to determine what happened. So I feel very strongly that we could say this was a homicide — death by the hands of another. My job is not to point the finger at one person or another."
But now that her job on the case is over, she is able to share her personal perspective on that.
"Well, obviously we always have to look at the last person who was seen with the child — the person who is legally, morally, ethically responsible for the child," she said, alluding to Caylee's mother. "What stories do they give? What happened? We never did get anything from (Casey) on what happened. Yet we found (Caylee) with duct tape, discarded in the woods. That tells a lot."
In her television special, Garavaglia intends to make the point that there simply wasn't more that the forensic evidence could have revealed.
"These were very dry bones," she explained. "Information that's coming out makes it seem like we could do this test or that test or that we could expect DNA. You wouldn't expect that. These are bones that don't have anything left on them."
Which is why, ultimately, she believes "we'll never know what happened until the perpetrator states what happened."
As for the information she'll present on "Dr G: Inside the Caylee Anthony Case," which airs Sunday night on TLC, Garavaglia wants to make one thing clear: she's simply providing information about the case, not profiting from it.
"First of all, I'm not making a penny off of it," she insisted. "I never wanted to. Anything I make from that show, because it's part of my regular series, will go to children's charities. I really just did it to get away from the hype and be able to explain why you could say that the duct tape was there in less than just little sound bites."

Caylee Anthony’s Medical Examiner Makes Smart -- But Shocking -- Decision
Caylee Anthony’s Medical Examiner Makes Smart -- But Shocking -- Decision
I suppose it was time. Six months may have passed since Casey Anthony was declared not guilty on charges of murdering her toddler daughter, Caylee. And now we're getting a whole TLC special on the case courtesy of Medical Examiner Dr. Jan Garavaglia, the woman who declared little Caylee's death was indeed a homicide.
And now for the big surprise up Dr. G's sleeve! You ready? I promise you're going to like it!
Garavaglia is refusing to cash in on the case. Every cent from Dr G: Inside the Caylee Anthony Case, will go to children's charities. She says that will enable her to shine a light on exactly how the medical examiner's process works while retaining her integrity. Now that truly deserves a Hallelujah!
Now . . . if only the medical examiner's very public refusal to take any money would prod other people to kill the greed? The backlash against people profiting off the tragic case began just about the second the Pinellas County jury foreman let loose the word "not" in the courtroom, but that doesn't mean people have listened.
A few months ago word leaked out that Anthony's ex-fiance was shopping a book around, hoping to get money by talking about the days he spent with her, thinking he was Caylee's father (a paternity test revealed he wasn't.). And just this week, Assistant State Prosecutor Jeffrey Ashton was on HLN hawking his new book: Imperfect Justice: Prosecuting Casey Anthony. Although Ashton has declined most reporters' requests that he reveal what he's doing from proceeds of the sale, he's now facing a legal challenge from Casey's camp. They say he revealed details ordered sealed by the court "for profit," and they want him held in contempt.
But even if they succeed in getting Ashton in trouble, the fact is there are still so many people in the public clamoring for Anthony dirt that the risk she'll get a big figure deal to show up on TV remains high. She could still profit off her daughter's death, something even the staunch holdouts on the side of innocence should have trouble stomaching.
And what of the general public? The people who would watch this sort of interview or who have already put up money for the creepy Casey Anthony Halloween mask or buying Ashton's book?
Being curious is natural, but Dr. G is proving that we can satisfy that morbid curiosity without feeling like we're dirtying the memory of little Caylee. I'm more than happy to support children's charities.

Caylee Anthony: Dr. G rips criticism that Caylee’s autopsy was shoddy
Caylee and Casey Anthony, Dr. G: Medical Examiner, Dr. Jan Garavaglia, Jose Baez, Orlando Sentinel, WFTV — posted by halboedeker on January, 1 2012 9:42 PM
In a TLC special tonight, Dr. Jan Garavaglia blasted the defense’s criticism of her work in the Casey Anthony case.
Garavaglia, the chief medical examiner for Orange and Osceola counties, ripped Dr. Werner Spitz’s complaint that she had conducted a “shoddy” autopsy on toddler Caylee Anthony.
The special, “Dr. G: Inside the Caylee Anthony Case,” noted that the child’s skull fell apart when defense expert Spitz opened it.
“He broke it. He caused a fracture and it fell it apart, and then he has the nerve to call my work shoddy?” Garavaglia asked incredulously.
“There was no reason to open that skull,” Garavaglia said. “We could clearly see in the skull.”
Casey Anthony was acquitted of murder in her daughter’s death. Garavaglia said that she doesn’t deal with guilt or innocence in her work, yet she seemed incredulous at the outcome.
“I don’t understand people who think Elvis is still alive. I don’t understand people who think we never landed on the moon,” Garavaglia said. “I don’t get those people. So I don’t get these people either,” she said of the jury.
The special offered the star of “Dr. G: Medical Examiner” a chance to answer her critics. She was forceful and energetic in her remarks. The program also featured former prosecutor Jeff Ashton, who has announced that he is running for state attorney; attorney Bill Sheaffer, an analyst for WFTV-Channel 9; and Amy Pavuk, a reporter for the Orlando Sentinel. The Anthony defense team was represented in clips, because this was, after all, Dr. G’s forum.
Sheaffer said the defense was not able to shake Garavaglia on the point that the child’s death was a homicide.
“I can tell you it was a homicide,” Garavaglia said as the program ended.
In her work, Garavaglia said she focuses on facts, and she reiterated that the manner of Caylee’s death was homicide because of circumstances. She based that opinion on “everything — the body, the scene, the history.”
She highlighted that Caylee was thrown in a plastic bag and hidden. Garavaglia reminded viewers that Casey Anthony didn’t report the child was missing, then said Caylee was kidnapped and later revised the story to say the child drowned.
“There is no reason for a 2-year-old child to decompose in a field in a plastic bag with duct tape over its face,” Garavaglia said.
Garavaglia said she doesn’t speak for the state, police, lawyers or defendants. “I speak to try to find the truth,” she said.
During the trial, defense attorney Jose Baez complained that Garavaglia’s conclusions were not science.
“The conclusions were scientifically defensible,” Garavaglia responded to Baez in the special. “That is not a principle that I make up. It’s not because this was a high-profile case that I wanted to do a thorough job. This was a 2-year-old little girl that was found in the woods.”

I had programmed it to my DVR a few days ago so I did see it. It just pissed me off all over again at the jury and the nerve of that lying defense. BUT I have the upmost respect for Dr. G and loved her getting her shots in at Dr. Werner Spitz.

It still pisses me off that the jury didn't understand their responsibilities to Caylee. The cause of her death remains a mystery, but there was no doubt that Casey caused it and in my opinion the State proved this with overwhelming circumstantial evidence. The Jury didn't review even one item of that evidence and that's negligence as far as I'm concerned.
If there was even one shred of an idea that George was involved in Caylee's death then Prosecutors would have gone after him too or instead of Casey. How on earth is it possible that 12 complete idiots ended up on the same Jury?
How Dr. G's testimony was so blatantly slandered and disregarded is mind boggling. The Defense put Werner Spitz up there to testify that Dr.G did a shoddy job because she didn't open Caylee's skull. And then in a fleeting statement he says when he opened the skull it "FELL APART"
Shocking.
The Defense suggested that the duct tape was wrapped around the plastic bags instead of Caylee's face as the Prosecutors claimed. But no one questioned that there was no plastic from the bags found on the tape... only Caylee's hair remained attached.
CRAP... like I said it just pisses me off all over again.

Dr. G reveals secrets of Caylee Anthony's autopsy
On Tuesday night, Dr. Drew talked to the medical examiner who rocked the Casey Anthony trial with her revealing testimony about Caylee Anthony.
“Dr. G., is it your opinion that Casey got away with murder?” Dr. Drew asked Dr. Jan Garavaglia at the opening of the interview.
“That`s not my call, Dr. Drew.” Dr. Garavaglia responded. “My call is to state what happened and to state my opinion on the manner. And I still feel very strongly that this is a homicide.”
Dr. Drew mentioned how lead prosecutor Jeff Ashton had argued vigorously that the duct tape was an indication of the means of death. “Was that something you adhered to?” Dr. Drew asked.
Dr. Garavaglia responded, “it certainly could be. I never stated it wasn`t. The problem is, I couldn`t say scientifically that it was definitively over the nose; over the nostrils. It certainly could have been. But I couldn`t really defend that. But we certainly see homicide victims with tape over just the mouth to keep them quiet. So, I just didn`t feel like that was scientifically defensible. And there was probably other things going on with this little girl to cause her death besides just the tape.”
Dr. Drew interjected, asking what she was speculating during that time.
“Oh, now, people don`t understand that just because we didn`t find chloroform and because we didn`t find drugs in her bones, does not mean that they were not there,” she explained. “I think there was some indication that that was a real possibility. Certainly, she`s in a plastic bag. She could have been in the trunk. There`s some indication of that. So, there are a lot of different possibilities. I just couldn`t say for sure how that all fit together. But, clearly, we can say that the pieces fit together as a homicide.”
Dr. Drew later asked what her response was to those who criticized her for not opening Caylee’s skull.
“It was not needed," she said. “It wasn`t needed there then. You know, that was an anthropologic exam. You know, I have never done an autopsy where I haven`t opened the calveria to take the brain out to look inside. These were completely disarticulated, completely dry bones. And I had two very prominent forensic anthropologists working every moment with me on those bones. And we never - none of us felt that that needed to be done.”

Casey Anthony: I don’t care about her behavior now, Dr. G says

Anderson Cooper wants to know Dr. Jan Garavaglia’s reaction to Casey Anthony’s behavior in YouTube clips released last week.
“I really was concerned about her behavior those 31 days that that girl was missing, and I really don’t care about her behavior now,” the star of “Dr. G: Medical Examiner” says in an interview Tuesday on “Anderson.”
Cooper seems incredulous. “You really don’t care about her now? What do you mean?” he asks.
“It doesn’t affect me. It doesn’t have anything to do with me,” Garavaglia says. “The trial is over. Her behavior was very much a part of calling this a homicide those first 31 days, but I don’t follow her. I don’t really care what happens to her.”
“Anderson,” Cooper’s daytime talk show, airs at 2 p.m. weekdays on WESH-Channel 2. Garavaglia’s interview could be a relief for anyone weary of the latest turn in the Anthony saga.
The testimony of Garavaglia, the chief medical examiner for Orange and Osceola counties, was one of the most memorable parts of Anthony’s murder trial. In July, Anthony was acquitted of murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee.
“I think the prosecution did a pretty good job,” Garavaglia tells Cooper. “I think it was really confusing for some people. I think they expected more ‘CSI’ kind of whiz-bang things. I think people don’t understand that it was circumstantial, that you had to put the pieces together. I think the defense did a lot of spin. I think they introduced things that had not any basis in fact.”
Beyond saying that Caylee’s death was a homicide, Garavaglia has no scenario about what happened to the toddler. “There was nothing I can scientifically prove,” Garavaglia says. “I don’t ever guess. I really don’t like guessing, I don’t like speculating because that’s not my job. My job is to see what the body can tell us and what it can’t tell us.”
Cooper wants to know what Garavaglia says to people who believe the undetermined cause of death was the reason Anthony was acquitted.
“Well, I can’t make things up,” Garavaglia says. “We certainly think that the duct tape probably had something to do with her death. You know, she’s in a plastic bag, there’s the question of chloroform, there’s evidence she was in the back of a trunk. So I couldn’t stay for sure that that tape was to shut her up or suffocate her if another means was used.”
Cooper asks: “It’s possible the duct tape was put on even after she died?”
Dr. G replies: “There’d be no reason to do that. We know the duct tape was there before any significant decomposition occurred.”

Caylee Anthony was murdered 'without a doubt', says doctor who examined her body
By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
Last updated at 9:13 AM on 10th January 2012
Caylee Anthony was 'without a doubt' murdered, according to the doctor who examined the two-year-old's body.
Dr Jan Garavaglia said that homicide was the only explanation for Caylee's death, and criticised the legal team of her mother Casey Anthony for making arguments in court which did not have 'any basis in fact'.
She added that the way Anthony behaved after her daughter went missing was 'very much part' of her decision to brand Caylee's death a murder.
'Without a doubt': Dr Jan Garavaglia is certain that Caylee Anthony was murdered
Dr Garavaglia made her comments to Anderson Cooper while being interviewed on his syndicated talk show, Anderson.
They come at a time when Casey Anthony is back in the news after the release of two videos which appear to show her talking about her life since being acquitted of killing Caylee.
A friend of Anthony's said the 25-year-old was 'doing good', was attending church regularly and had found a new boyfriend.
Caylee: The two-year-old girl was found dead after being missing for six months
New life: Casey Anthony recently filmed herself talking about her life in hiding
When asked what she thought of the revelations about Anthony's new life, Dr Garavaglia told Mr Cooper: 'I really don't care about her behaviour now.'
She added: 'The trial is over. Her behaviour was very much a part of calling this a homicide those first 31 days but I don't follow her, I don't really care what happens to her.'
Asked if she had thought of a possible scenario to explain Caylee's death, she replied: 'It doesn't matter, there was nothing I can scientifically prove. I don't ever guess. I really don't like guessing, I don't like speculating because that's not my job.
'My job is to see what the body can tell us and what it can't tell us.'
Mr Cooper asked: 'And what her body told you was what?'
Dr Garavaglia replied: 'It was a homicide... Without a doubt.'
Interview: Dr Garavaglia's comments come from an appearance on Anderson Cooper's talk show, Anderson
Questioning: The doctor told Mr Cooper that she was not interested in Anthony's current behaviour
She also said she thought that while the prosecution in Anthony's trial had done 'a pretty good job', they were hindered because some people 'expected more CSI, kind of whizz-bang things', whereas in fact the evidence was 'circumstantial'.
Dr Garavaglia criticised Anthony's defense team, saying they 'did a lot of spin and 'introduced things that [did not have] any basis in fact.'
The doctor, known as 'Dr G', is Chief Medical Examiner for Orange and Osceola counties in Florida, and presents her own television show, Dr G: Medical Examiner, on Discovery Fit & Health.
Her interview with Anderson Cooper will be aired on Tuesday.
