A Cincinnati Bengals cheerleader and former high school teacher has been indicted for allegedly having sex with a teenage student, and her mother, a principal at another school, is accused of tampering with evidence in the case.

According to indictments filed in Kenton County, Kentucky, on Thursday, 26-year-old Sarah Jones is charged with first-degree sexual assault and unlawful use of electronic means to induce a minor to engage in sexual activities. She and her mother, 55-year-old Cheryl Jones, have been released on bond.

Prosecutors and police declined to speak about the specific evidence in the case Tuesday, but the Kentucky Enquirer reported that the alleged victim’s relatives were in court for the arraignment Monday to show support for them. The Joneses’ attorney, Charles Lester Jr., told the paper that the families are friends.

Lester did not return calls seeking comment on Tuesday. In a statement to WCPO, he said, “Sarah has maintained her innocence. The indictment of her mother is completely baseless.”

A spokesperson for the Cincinnati Bengals told HLN that they are monitoring the case, but it would be inappropriate to comment on Jones or her status with the team until the legal case is resolved. She is still listed as a captain of the Ben-Gals on the team’swebsite.
Sarah Jones resigned from her position as an English teacher at Dixie Heights High School last November. The indictment alleges that she, as a person in a position of authority, had sexual contact with a child under 18-years-old between October 1 and December 31, 2011. Cheryl Jones is the principal of Twenhofel Middle School, but she was reportedly put on leave after the indictments were announced last week. Court documents do not indicate what alleged activity led to her evidence tampering charge.

Sarah Jones had filed a lawsuit against the gossip website thedirty.com in 2009 for defamation over posts claiming that she had sex with every player on the Bengals team and had sexually transmitted diseases. That case is scheduled to go to trial in June.

“To 15-year-olds, if it's in, if it's on the internet, it's true to them. And I think that I hit rock bottom when I had a student say that she would never learn from a slut like me again,” she said on ABC’s “20/20” last year.

Sarah Jones admitted in court to relationship with student

Former Cincinnati Bengals cheerleader and former high school teacher Sarah Jones has pleaded guilty to custodial interference and sexual misconduct for having a sexual relationship with one of her teenage students.

Jones was sentenced to five years of supervised probation. She doesn’t have to serve any time in jail, and she will not have to register as a sexual offender.

During a hearing Monday in Kentucky's Kenton County Circuit Court, Jones entered her plea of guilty and admitted to having the relationship.

The plea deal allows Jones to avoid a trial that was set to begin Wednesday.

Jones resigned from her position as an English teacher at Dixie Heights High School last November. The indictment alleged that Jones, as a person in a position of authority, had sexual contact with a child younger than 18 between October 1 and December 31, 2011.

As part of her plea deal, Jones is not allowed to seek a career in teaching.
