The father of a Shasta County teen who went on the run with her uncle for over a month, has been arrested for sexual battery. 33-year-old Jacob Berlinghoff was arrested last night on a felony warrant of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14, annoying a child and sexual battery. The Shasta County Sheriff's Office says the arrest stems from an incident in the fall of 2008. No other information was given. Jacob's 15-year-old daughter went missing from her Redding home last month, and was found with her uncle, Charles Berlinghoff in San Francisco two and half weeks ago. He faces nearly 100 felony charges, including 30 counts of incest. We will bring you more information on Jacob Berlinghoff's arrest as soon as it become available.

The father of a Shasta County teen who went missing for 31 days in November and December was arrested late Thursday in connection with multiple sex-related charges.
According to the Shasta County Sheriff's office, Jacob Berlinghoff's was in the Shasta County Jail early Friday, facing charges include lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14 and sexual battery.
No word yet on what Berlinghoff's relation to the child may have been. However, the Sheriff's Office did report in a press release this arrest stems from an incident that took place in 2008.
The charges come as Berlinghoff's brother, Charles Berlinghoff, sits in the Shasta County Jail, facing nearly 100 charges, most of them felonies, for sexual acts with Jacob's daughter, many of which occurred during the teen's month-long disappearance with Charles.

Now I have to wonder........could these charges be false? If the minor IS Jean, could she be lying about her dad molesting her because she's angry at him. I need more facts.

I don't guess that it's going to be a very Merry Christmas at the Berlinghoff home since all the males are in Jail. Jean's parents are divorced and I think Jean lived with her father. Jean Berlinghoff’s mother, Heather Vega lives in Redding and is married to Robert Vega.

Could this all be for the publicity?
If arrested for a felony, the father would lose his financial aid for school.
Where he studies psychology.

All of this is too cut and dried to me.

"While staying involved in the search for his daughter, Jacob Berlinghoff said he’s been able to continue his online classes and one live class a week he takes as a full-time student at Simpson University. He said he’s taking 12 credits this term and is about half way to a bachelor’s degree in psychology, with aspirations to earn a PhD. in psychology from the University of San Francisco in 2013.

Jacob Berlinghoff said he earned an associate’s degree in psychology earlier this year from Shasta College, where he played football in fall 2009 for much of the season but didn’t get into many games as an “old guy” backing up all-region linebacker Zach Gibbons.

In addition to going to school, Jacob Berlinghoff said he’s self-employed as a movie maker, having been involved with about 50 projects. His own films, made under the screen name of Jake Daniels, include a pair of low-budget horror movies available for rent on Netflix. He said “Dark Woods” from 2006 and “The Deviants” in 2007 were shot for $5,000 each.

His filmmaking and his current situation make for an ironic twist in his story. Saddened by the disappearances of Tera Smith, 16, in 1998 and Heather Carpenter, 22, in 2003, Jacob Berlinghoff said he started looking into making a movie about them.

Smith went missing on Aug. 22, 1998, and has not been found. Carpenter’s body was found on Dec. 18, 2003, after she disappeared on Aug. 4 that year. Carpenter’s remains were found in a shallow grave in Keswick and her convicted killer, Patrick Michael Larmour, 25, is serving a life sentence at High Desert State Prison in Susanville.

Jacob Berlinghoff said his documentary’s script focused on Tera Smith’s case, which Hubbard, the sheriff’s detective looking for Jean, is still working. Wanting to make the movie appear much more professional than his slasher flicks, Jacob Berlinghoff said he had hoped to raise a few million dollars to make the film.

He said the project stalled after was able to line up only $300,000 in support from investors. Proceeds from the film were set to go to a scholarship fund in Tera Smith’s memory, per an agreement with her parents, Jacob Berlinghoff said.

Since his own daughter went missing, Jacob Berlinghoff said he’s talked once with Terry Smith, Tera Smith’s father.

That was two years ago. Why is this all the sudden coming up now? Something here is very hinky.

I have a feeling that Jean is the 'child' and she either just told LE about the abuse or else or she made the story up to get back at her dad.

The teen’s mother, Heather Vega, 33, of Redding, said the teen has been in her custody since she was reunited with her family in on Dec. 12.

“I’m trying to get her life back together,” Vega said.

She said the teen is set to celebrate Christmas with her family and is enrolling in a new school.

Teenagers themselves when their daughter was born, Vega and Jacob Berlinghoff were briefly married but then split up. They’ve both remarried since, with Jacob Berlinghoff actually marrying again twice and divorcing twice. He currently is set to wed again next year, he’s told the Record Searchlight.

Vega said she was shocked to hear about Jacob Berlinghoff’s arrest. She entered “WOW REALLY!” as her Facebook status this morning.

In a telephone interview with the Record Searchlight, she said she didn’t know any details about why the sheriff’s office arrested Jacob Berlinghoff.

“I’m not real clear on everything going on with that,” she said. “…I don’t know who it involves.”

Vega said she shied from media while the teen was missing because she was on bed rest during a risky pregnancy. While still three months from her due date, she said she’s also focused on helping her daughter.

“No one will ever hurt her again,” Vega said.

The stunning new developments involving Jacob Berlinghoff‘s arrest on sex related charges surprised his ex-wife Heather Vega.
“It is very confusing and devastating. I found out last night and I’m still numb,” said Vega.
KRCR also went to the Shasta County Sheriff’s office to get information on how long they had been investigating Jacob Berlinghoff or what led to these charges but law enforcement officers would not give additional details.

I too think that Jean is the alleged victim in this charge...The question is: Is it true? She said she loved Charlie "more than an uncle". Maybe she is bitter toward her father for "breaking them up" and accused him. And if it IS true, how can it be proven now? Would they just take her word for it, considering what they know about the situation? Maybe she has evidence of some sort that she has saved: notes, emails, texts, pictures...I tend to think that there may be something since he has been arrested. IDK...

Maybe the police are dragging up past issues for the father because the story is hinky and they want to get to the truth?

A bizarre new twist in the case of a once missing Redding teen who went on the run with her uncle for more than a month. The girl’s father, Jacob Berlinghoff, is now in custody on sex-related charges.

Action news met with Jacob Berlinghoff just days after his 15-year-old daughter was found. This is what he had to say about his brother, Charles Berlinghoff's arrest: “I hope he is in prison for the rest of his life,” exclaimed Berlinghoff. “If you are going to be preying on children I don't think you should be in society anyway. Children are supposed to be innocent.”

A very ironic statement considering Jacob Berlinghoff now behind bars charged with lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14, annoying a child and sexual battery.

According to Shasta County Sheriff’s officials the arrest stems from an incident that happened in the fall of 2008. There's no word on what his relationship is to the victim.

This is just bizarre. I wonder who bonded him out and I'm surprised that the bond was set at $50K because if they thought he was a threat to children, or his children (since we don't know who he supposedly molested) I would think the bond would be much higher.
This girl, even thou' she says the sex was consensual, thank god our laws doesn't allow that so Uncle Charlie is probably looking at a long time behind bars.

After being arrested on sex-related charges Thursday, the father of the Shasta County teen who went missing for 31 days in November and December was released on bail on Christmas Day.
According to the Shasta County Sheriff's Office, 33-year-old Jacob Berlinghoff of Redding was arrested around 9:25 pm Thursday night. He was booked into the Shasta County Jail on three felony sex charges including lewd and lascivious acts with a child under the age of 14, annoying a child and sexual battery. He is being held on $50,000 bail.
As is common with crimes involving minors, the victim's identity is not being released. However, the Sheriff's office confirms the charges stem from an incident that occurred in the Fall of 2008.
Calls to Jacob Berlinghoff for comment have yet to be answered.

I'm also starting to agree with Charm about the "hinky" factor! The father (Jacob Berlinghoff) of the missing teen (Jean Berlinghoff) was making a movie about a missing teen/young lady, then his own daughter is abducted by her own uncle, and now he (Jacob) is being charged with molesting an underage girl! A Jan. 31 arraignment date has been set in Shasta County Superior Court for Jacob Daniel Berlinghoff of Redding, 33, who was arrested Thursday night on suspicion of sex-related charges.

While Charles Berlinghoff appeared in court today on the 31-day disappearance of his teenage niece, new details have surfaced in a separate case against his brother Jacob Berlinghoff, who faces charges of sexual misconduct stemming from an alleged 2008 incident involving a minor.

An investigative report on Jacob Berlinghoff's case alleges he made a teen drink alcohol as punishment, touched her inappropriately and threatened to shave her head as an apparent lesson against the dangers of drinking.

While his daughter was missing, Jacob Berlinghoff appeared on national television programs, was quoted in news reports and said he spoke daily with missing-child advocate Marc Klaas.

Jacob Berlinghoff now faces a felony charge of a lewd act with a child under 14 years, and misdemeanor charges of annoying or molesting a child and sexual battery.

He was arrested on Dec. 23 and released from Shasta County Jail a day later, after his $50,000 bail was posted. He faces a Jan. 31 arraignment date.

Jacob Berlinghoff’s brother, Charles Berlinghoff, appeared in Shasta County Superior Court today, where he was assigned a public defender and did not enter a plea. Charles Berlinghoff faces almost 100 felony charges, including multiple counts of lewd acts with a minor, incest and oral copulation, stemming from his disappearance with his niece.

Shasta County Sheriff’s officials say Charles Berlinghoff and the teen spent time camping out, riding a freight train to Portland where they stayed in homeless facility, and eventually catching a ride to San Francisco. In San Francisco they were spotted by the teen’s adult cousin. Charles Berlinghoff was arrested and the teen taken into protective custody.

Charles Berlinghoff is being held in Shasta County jail in lieu of $1.6 million bail.

As for Jacob Berlinghoff, a sheriff’s investigation report points to an incident from September of 2008 in which a teen alleges that Berlinghoff provided her with alcohol and made her drink it as a punishment, threatened to shave her head, and inappropriately touched her breast and the inside of her thigh.

When the teen asked Jacob Berlinghoff what he was doing, the report alleges that he responded by saying “this is what happens when you drink.”

The teen is not being identified by A News Café because she is the alleged victim of a sex crime.

Friends and other family members of the teen interviewed in the sheriff’s report confirm that they were aware of the alleged incident prior to Jacob Berlinghoff’s daughter’s recent disappearance.

When questioned by investigators, Jacob Berlinghoff denied that he inappropriately touched the teen, the report says. Jacob Berlinghoff admitted he originally heard of the incident from the teen’s mother back in 2008, the report adds.

The report also states that after originally agreeing to meet with investigators to take a Computerized Voice Stress Analysis test on Dec. 16, Jacob Berlinghoff did not arrive for the test and did not return phone calls from sheriff’s detectives.

The report concludes that as a result of the investigation, the charges of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14 and annoying or molesting a child were requested because, “at the time of the (alleged) molestation the Victim was thirteen years of age and (investigators) suspect the molestation was done in a sexual nature based upon the circumstances and statement he made when he fondled the Victim’s breast.”

Ten hours after her 31-day disappearance with her uncle ended, a Redding teen told a detective that her father forced her to drink alcohol and fondled her as punishment in fall 2008.

The 15-year-old girl told Shasta County sheriff’s Detective Brian Jackson that her father, Jacob Daniel Berlinghoff, 33, of Redding, put his hand on her thigh and up her shirt after ordering her to drink until she nearly passed out, court records show. The teen said the incident was one of the reasons she ran away.

“The victim told me she did not want to go to ‘the law’ when it occurred but the incident played a part with her wanting to leave,” Jackson wrote in a report he filed Dec. 15.

Jacob Berlinghoff is scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 31 on one felony count of lewd and lascivious behavior with a child under 14, as well as misdemeanor counts of annoying a child and sexual battery. He is out on bail.

Jacob Berlinghoff appeared twice on national television, once while his daughter was missing to appeal for her safe return and once after she was found.

He declined an interview request with the Record Searchlight on Thursday afternoon, saying he was sorting things out.

“I have no comment at this point,” Jacob Berlinghoff said.

The teen first told Jackson of the accusations against her father during an interview just after midnight Dec. 12 at the Mission Station of the San Francisco Police Department.

At 2 p.m. Dec. 11, a cousin of the teen spotted had her and her uncle walking down a Mission District street and called 911, prompting the arrest of Charles David Berlinghoff, 44, on charges he kept the teen from her parents.

While telling detectives of her whereabouts during her 31 days missing, the teen revealed details about the alleged assault by her father. Jackson wrote that the teen said it was when she was 13 and was suspended from school after being caught with alcohol at school.

Along with giving her alcohol to drink as punishment, the teen said her father threatened to shave her head but never did. Jackson’s report doesn’t detail what kind of alcohol or how much the teen says she drank.

The teen did tell Jackson that she drank so much that she nearly passed out, according to his report. The teen told Jackson that her father then asked her to come to the couch, where she lay down. Once she was on the couch she said her father put his hand up her shirt, touching her left breast, and touched the inside of her thigh.

“The victim stated that (Jacob) Berlinghoff told her that this was what happens when you get drunk,” Jackson wrote.

The teen told Jackson that it was the only time her father touched her sexually, according to his report.

Jackson wrote that he asked Jacob Berlinghoff about the accusations at 5:15 p.m. Dec. 14 and he said he’d never touched his daughter. He said he remembered punishing her in September 2008 after she was caught with alcohol at school and suspended. He said he poured out all the alcohol in the house, didn’t force the teen to drink and didn’t touch her.

He told Jackson that in early 2009 the teen got in trouble for smoking marijuana in the house and that is when she first accused him of getting her drunk and molesting her in fall 2008.

In addition to talking to the teen and her father about the incident, Jackson said he interviewed the girl’s mother, Heather Vega, 33; Anna Ramirez, one of Jacob Berlinghoff’s ex-wives; and the teen’s sister.

He wrote that Vega told him that she wasn’t sure if her daughter was making up the report of the assault after getting in trouble.

“Vega told me she was just trying to handle the situation with the family and since the victim told Vega about the incident ‘so late,’ she was hesitant to report it,” Jackson wrote. The teen told Jackson that she waited months to tell her mother about the reported assault and did so only after she told a friend, who urged her to tell her mother.

Vega did not immediately return voice mails from the Record Searchlight on Thursday afternoon. Vega, whose marriage with Jacob Berlinghoff was annulled in the 1990s, has said she’s been taking care of the teen since she was found.

Ramirez said that while she was getting a divorce from Jacob Berlinghoff in fall 2008, she was close to the teen, Jackson wrote. Ramirez told him that the teen told her about the reported assault shortly after it happened and that the teen said she’d already told her mother about it.

Jackson wrote that Ramirez was upset during their telephone interview Dec. 16.

“I could hear that she was sobbing over the telephone about not acting on what was reported to her in 2008.”

While the teen’s name was publicized during her disappearance from Nov. 10 to Dec. 11, the Record Searchlight stopped using it after learning of sex-related charges against her uncle. The paper does not publish the names of reported sex-crime victims.

Charles David Berlinghoff, 44, the teen’s uncle, faces nearly 100 felony charges, including 30 counts of lewd acts with a minor, 30 counts of incest and 15 counts of oral copulation. He pleaded not guilty to the charges Wednesday and remained at the Shasta County jail today in lieu of $1.6 million bail. He’s scheduled to be in court Wednesday.

In a report separate from Jackson’s, sheriff’s detective Mark Haslam wrote that the teen told him that she had a sexual relationship with her uncle.

“I love him, more than an uncle,” the teen told Haslam.

You all were right. She is accusing her father. I don't believe it. I think she made it up, I think she is a rotten brat that was smoking pot and drinking and when her father caught her, she threatened to say he was being sexual toward her.

I also think she DID "fall in love" with her uncle, that the sex was consensual and he was most likely feeding her pot and booze. MOO!

I knew the abused was going to be Jean. I knew it, I knew it! She told LE about the abuse when she was taken into custody in SF, but she had already told her mother and step-mother earlier. This is a hard one to call. I don't know what Jean's motivation is......if she's telling the truth or if she's lying because her father was trying to keep her on the straight and narrow. If her mother believed Jean, way back when, why would she have allowed Jean to continue to live with Jacob? Why didn't the mother or the step-mother contact LE immediately? Whether they believed Jean or not they should have contacted LE and let them handle it. We have to believe our children and protect them even if it's going to be embarrassing for someone that might be proven innocent in the end.

Maybe she has had a problem not being honest before is why her Mom/Step Mom hesitated to believe her? I can't think of any other reason no one stepped in and did something about the accusation. Maybe uncle pervert told her to tell LE that her Dad molested her to throw the heat off him?

There is a minister in this town that I heard did the same thing with his daughter when she was caught drinking in high school. He made her drink so much, with him, until it make her violently ill. I am not so sure that is going to always solve the problem though.

My thoughts have been the same with thinking that Jean was just accusing her father out of spite.

I think the same thing about it being so hard on the poor person being wrongly accused. I really feel sorry for some, certainly not all, teachers today. They are an easy target to be wrongly accused in the sexual advances/acts today. Yes, there are way to many that are proven guilty.

That is the most stupid thing to do is make a kids smoke or drink as punishment for smoking and drinking. I heard about this kind of punishment many moons ago when I was a teenager. I think it is dangerous and to punish a teenager that way.

The father of a 15-year-old girl who was missing for a month with her uncle pleaded not guilty this morning to charges that he fondled her in 2008.

Jacob Berlinghoff, 33, entered the plea during an arraignment hearing before Shasta County Superior Court Judge Wilson Curle. Berlinghoff faces a felony count of Lewd of Lascivious Act with a Child Under 14 years and misdemeanor counts of Annoying or Molesting a Child and Sexual Battery.

Curle set a preliminary hearing for March 8. A pre-preliminary conference was also set for March 3.

Berlinghoff’s brother, Charles Berlinghoff, 44, faces nearly 100 sexually related charges in another case stemming from the girl’s disappearance. Charles Berlinghoff, of San Bernardino, is due in court on Friday.

Reached by phone, Jacob Berlinghoff’s attorney Eric Alan Berg said he’s hopeful that when all the facts of the case are brought to the surface, the District Attorney’s office will dismiss the charges against his client.

“When she was missing, (Jacob) spent 31 days trying to get people to help find his daughter,” Berg said. “He loves his daughter. Today we plead innocent to all the charges.”

An investigative report on the Jacob Berlinghoff case alleges that back in 2008 he made the teen drink alcohol as a punishment, touched her breast inappropriately and threatened to shave her head as an apparent lesson against the dangers of drinking. The girl was in the eighth grade at the time of the alleged incident.

While his daughter was missing, Jacob Berlinghoff appeared on national television programs and was quoted in news reports almost daily.

Shortly after the teen and her uncle were discovered in San Francisco, the teen told investigators that one of the reasons she ran away was because of the 2008 incident.

The investigative report details interviews with several people who say they were aware of the 2008 incident prior to the teen’s disappearance in November. Those who were aware of the 2008 incident included two of Jacob Berlinghoff’s ex-wifes (one of whom is the teen’s mother, Heather Vega), the teen’s sister, and one of her friends, the report says.

He was arrested on Dec. 23 and released from Shasta County Jail a day later, after his $50,000 bail was posted.

Deputy District Attorney Curtis Woods said investigations are continuing on the matter, but thus far only the three counts are pending against Jacob Berlinghoff.

Charles Berlinghoff, who was arrested on Dec. 11, originally faced 21 counts, but that expanded to 96 counts after the DA office gathered more information about the case. Charles Berlinghoff’s charges include incest, lewd acts with a minor, oral copulation, child stealing, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, providing lewd material to a minor and arranging a meeting with a minor for a lewd purpose.

Though Jacob Berlinghoff plead not guilty, Berg indicated that the defense team has work to do prior to March preliminary hearing.

“We still need to do a thorough investigation in the case,” Berg said.

I agree, Wrap! I wonder if her uncle/lover talked her into this story, in order to implicate his brother as well? This whole case is just weird & sick!!

The Redding attorney who removed himself as the defender of Jacob Daniel Berlinghoff earlier this week helped Berlinghoff’s brother clear his record of an exposure case conviction nearly a decade ago.

It’s unclear whether that’s the conflict of interest that Eric Berg cited when he quit as Jacob Berlinghoff’s attorney Monday. Berg told the judge that he had earlier represented a witness in Jacob Berlinghoff’s case, but didn’t name the witness.

While the teen and Charles Berlinghoff were missing, Jacob Berlinghoff said he learned his brother had kept his conviction in the Tehama County exposure case a secret from his family. Had he known about the case, Jacob Berlinghoff said, he wouldn’t have let his brother stay with him and his young daughter during a weeklong visit last fall.

The Tehama conviction required Charles Berlinghoff to register as a sex offender. In the case, Charles Berlinghoff pleaded guilty to one of the counts in a deal to have four others dropped.

Charles Berlinghoff exposed himself to four girls while they were walking to school in Corning on April 1, 1998, according to Tehama County Superior Court records. The girls were walking as separate pairs. When the first pair passed, Charles Berlinghoff said “hi.” The girls said he wore only underwear and was on the floor masturbating near his open front door. When the second set of girls passed Charles Berlinghoff was naked and sitting in a recliner masturbating, they said. He again said “hi.”

He was sentenced to serve 60 days, three years of probation and pay a $200 fine. The court records also show that Charles Berlinghoff was convicted of indecent exposure in Shasta County for exposing himself while in a car on March 19, 1993. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail and 36 months probation in that case.

In his 2002 filing to have the Tehama County conviction expunged, Berg cited two letters from therapists who said Charles Berlinghoff didn’t pose a sexual threat to children.

“In my professional opinion, Charles Berlinghoff would not (repeat, NOT) pose any danger, sexual or otherwise, to young boys or to young girls either, for that matter,” Joseph Busey, a Red Bluff psychologist, wrote in a letter to the Tehama County Probation Department.

Busey said today privacy laws prevent him from saying whether Charles Berlinghoff was a patient.
