INTERNATIONAL PEDOPHILE ALERT - PAUL RYAN, 27

A PERVERT who was caught with more than 47,000 sickening child abuse pictures on his computer escaped jail because the case was “hanging over him” for three years.

Loner Paul Ryan, 27, was picked up after Belgian police cracked a European paedophile ring linked to a Luxembourg-based website.

Interpol passed on the details of people who had downloaded child porn from the host site in March and April 2009 to local law enforcement.

Armed with his details, officers from Merseyside police’s child protection unit arrested Ryan, of Duke Street, Southport.

Chris Taylor, prosecuting, told Liverpool crown court Ryan’s computer was locked with 14 different passwords and forensic examiners could only access the illegal material after he gave them codes.


The court heard he also used a special program to mask his twisted activities.

Police recovered 47,162 indecent images of girls as young as four being sexually abused. They ranged from category one to category five, the most serious.

More than 300 films were also found.

When interviewed by detectives, Ryan – who lives alone in his town centre flat – admitted making the images and distributing 11 category one pictures by allowing the files to be shared.

He pleaded guilty to 21 different counts including making indecent images of children, distributing indecent images of children and possession of “extreme pornography”.

Rory McCormack, defending, asked for mercy for Ryan, who could have been jailed for two years.

He said: “I would ask the court to take an exceptional view and impose a community penalty on him.

“In effect the defendant is a very vulnerable individual for a number of reasons.

“He has been diagnosed with a personality disorder with depressive characteristics and has a history of self harm and suicide attempts.”

Judge David Boulton told Ryan: “I want you to understand that these photographs are photographs of sexual abuse being carried out on children.

“They are photographs of criminal offences being committed.


“They are photographs which show the childhood of innocent children being taken away from them.

“In particular one or two I have seen today I found very distressing indeed.”

He said although he could jail Ryan he was not going to, citing his early guilty plea, his previous good character and the fact his parents were standing by him.

He said: “These offences were committed more than three years ago. You have had this hanging over you all that time.”

He sentenced Ryan to 12 months in jail suspended for two years, a supervision order of two years and a sex offender treatment program.

Ryan was also ordered to sign the sex offenders register for 10 years.
