HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The desperate search is on for a missing 4-month-old girl after Houston police issued an Amber Alert.


Police say Stephanie Lavette Phillips was taken from her mother before dawn at the apartment complex at West Bellfort near Fondren in southwest Houston where they live. The alleged abductor, Byron Gee, is the boyfriend of the baby's mother. He is not the child's biological father.

Early this morning, neighbors at the complex say they heard the woman screaming.

"Screaming, yelling, 'Bring my baby back! I'm going to call police!'" said one resident.

Police say Gee took the baby, then stole an SUV from a woman across the street who was leaving for work. The stolen vehicle Gee is in is reportedly a white 1999 Ford Expedition with Texas license plate DK3N645.

Police searched the apartment complex for the baby, but did not find her.

Gee is a 32-year-old black male who stands 5 feet, 9 inches tall and was last seen wearing black pants, black shirt and no shoes. Gee is also described as bi-polar.

Stephanie is African-American, 4 months old and she was wearing only a white T-shirt and diaper.

HOUSTON—Police in southwest Houston issued an Amber Alert early Tuesday after a four-month-old girl was allegedly abducted by her mom’s boyfriend.
The boyfriend has been identified as 32-year-old Byron Earl Gee, a convicted criminal.
According to the Houston Police Department, Gee took little Stephanie Lavette Phillips around 4:30 a.m. The Amber Alert was issued shortly before 7 a.m.
Police said Gee took the baby from the Brays Oaks Apartments in the 6400 block of W. Bellfort , then ran across the street to another complex. Witnesses said he was running door to door, baby in hand, trying to get someone to open up. When no one would, he went after one woman who was on her way to work.
“He told her to help him, to take him somewhere, but she told him that she had to go to work,” said Daisy Gomez, the woman’s sister. “He told her not to answer the phone and not to call nobody and, like, he saw that she pushed the green button to answer, that’s when everything happened.”
Gee then stole the woman’s white, 1999 Ford Expedition with license plate number DK3N645.
Another neighbor said Gee did not appear to be well when he saw him.
“He just looked throwed off, he looked throwed off,” said Herbert Wilson, neighbor. “I never talked to him or nothing and last night he had asked one of my home boys for a lighter to light a cigarette but, he just looked deranged.”
Baby Stephanie is African-American and was wearing only a white t-shirt and diaper when Gee ran off with her. Police said he is not her biological father.

HOUSTON -- Houston police say the 4-month-old baby girl who was allegedly taken by her mother's boyfriend was found safe at a hotel in Galveston Tuesday evening.

Police said they took the suspect, 32-year-old Byron Earl Gee, into custody just after 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The Amber Alert for Stephanie Lavette Phillips was cancelled after she was found at the Mariner Hotel in Galveston Tuesday evening.

The suspect was spotted with the infant in southeast Houston around 3 p.m., according to a police source.

A clerk in southeast Houston reported seeing Gee with the baby and the witness said the baby appeared to be in good shape, police sources said. Gee is a convicted criminal with bipolar disorder.
