MONTGOMERY COUNTY —
The mother of a 19-month-old child that died from blunt force trauma has been charged with murder.
The child’s mother, Crystal Laurel, and Dustin Rybak, who is not the child’s father, were arrested following the death of Takota Hasty. Laurel and Rybak were previously arraigned on felony charges of involuntary manslaughter, tampering with evidence and child endangering. Lauren appeared via video arraignment today on a an added charge of murder.
The case against Lauren and Rybak will next be presented to a grand jury for review. Charges against both suspects will be presented together since they are co-defendants.
Laurel’s son Takota Hasty of 157 Stafford Ave. in Harrison Twp., died April 8 at Children’s Medical Center of Dayton. The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office ruled that his death was a homicide and that he died from blunt force trauma to the head.
Law enforcement officials became aware of the toddler after a Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to the medical center April 6 on a report of possible child abuse, according to a sheriff’s incident report.
Medical center officials told sheriff deputies that Takota was covered in bruises and burn marks that were covered up with makeup and had bleeding on the brain, according to search warrant affidavit. These officials believed that some of the burns could have been from a cigarette.
Children Services started a case involving the couple after Takota’s biological father Justin Hasty brought a juvenile associated with Laurel to the medical center on March 31. The child had bruises and lumps to the head, according to the affidavit. At the time, a Children Services representative was told that the injuries to this juvenile were caused after Rybak allegedly pushed this juvenile’s head against a wall.
Rybak waived his preliminary hearing in the Takota case, so his case will go to a grand jury, according to a municipal court official.
