Fort Morgan Police Department officials reported the boyfriend of missing teenager Kayla Chadwick of Fort Morgan has been arrested on four counts of perjury, one count of tampering with physical evidence and trying to influence a public servant.
The arrest of Ivan Torralba,19, of Fort Morgan actually happened on Nov. 8 about 1:22 p.m.

He is being held in the Logan County Jail on $250,000 bond.

Kayla Chadwick was reported missing in March.

It was reported that Chadwick was last seen after an argument with her boyfriend.

A grand jury was convened to investigate her disappearance.

As a result, Torralba was arrested as a result of the "investigation" part of the disappearance, but not necessarily connected with the disappearance itself.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited children has listed Chadwick as an "endangered runaway" after months have passed since her disappearance.

This is exactly what Ive been waiting for! I just knew he did something to her! Now I just hope they find her and it gives her family some peace. Ive followed this case very close and her family especially her mother has been so victimized.

Maybe she told him she doesn't want to marry him and he flipped out on her.

STERLING -- The bond for the boyfriend of missing Fort Morgan teen Kayla Chadwick was lowered Thursday in Logan County District Court.

Eighteen-year-old Ivan Torralba, of Fort Morgan, faces charges of tampering with physical evidence, attempting to influence a public servant and four counts of first-degree perjury.

Attorneys disclosed scraps of information about Torralba detailing his personal life, criminal history and the grand jury investigation against him before Judge Michael Singer moved discussion to a conference room.

When they emerged, Torralba's $250,000 bond was reduced to $75,000 and the court set a status conference for Jan. 24, 2013.

Kayla Chadwick, 18, was last seen in late March after an argument with Torralba. A grand jury convened to investigate her disappearance and later found there was probable cause to believe Torralba had interfered with the investigation by destroying, tampering or removing evidence.

In this case, according to court arguments, the grand jury found evidence the defendant may have moved or hidden a gun used as evidence.

They indicted Torralba, and he was arrested Nov. 8.

Defense attorney Thor Bauer requested a bond reduction, citing the suspect's local ties to northeast Colorado, his low financial means and the fact that the top charges he faces -- the perjury counts -- are only a class 4 felony.

He described Torralba as a lifelong Colorado resident, born in Greeley, whose whole family lives within either Weld County or Morgan County. Torralba graduated from Fort Morgan High School with honors, he added, held a position as a welder at Delta Oil Field and takes care of his 13-year-old sister when his mother works night shifts.

Assistant District Attorney Brittny Lewton objected to a reduction, arguing that Torralba had a lengthy juvenile criminal history, including once being caught possessing a weapon on school property, two prior probation violations and three minor in possession charges.

She also cited the gravity of the allegations against Torralba and the danger he posed to the community.

"He lied to a grand jury," she said. "The proof of that is fairly significant."

Bauer said the defendant had been "completely cooperative" with investigators and had made several statements.

Because the information involved in the grand jury investigation is secret -- and because the investigation is ongoing -- Singer requested additional information about Torralba outside of the courtroom. The exact reason for the bond reduction wasn't disclosed after the conference, but Lewton said $250,000 was a "very high bond" for a class 4 felony and that she wasn't surprised by Singer's decision.

Torralba would also be monitored with a GPS tracker as a condition of the bond.

Though the investigation continues, evidence has not yet shown that Torralba committed a crime against Kayla Chadwick or is linked to her disappearance.

Case moved for missing Fort Morgan teen's boyfriend

STERLING -- At least half of the Logan County Justice Center courtroom flashed neon green in support of missing Fort Morgan teen Kayla Chadwick Wednesday.
But the looks on their faces remained blank as the case for 18-year-old Ivan Torralba, Chadwick's boyfriend and the last person to have seen her, was continued another two months to a final disposition hearing on May 22.

Torralba, appearing on a $75,000 bond wearing jeans and a plaid shirt, needed roughly five minutes for the court to address his case.

His attorney Thor Bauer said he was trying to review $750 of information from the grand jury investigation into Chadwick's disappearance, which led to Torralba's charges of perjury, attempting to influence a public servant and tampering with physical evidence.

He last appeared for a disposition hearing in January when his case was first continued. At that hearing the court had just received transcripts from the grand jury but was awaiting more information.

"Let the record reflect that we made this information available quite some time ago," said District Attorney Brittny Lewton, who didn't object to the continuance.

She said that Chadwick's mother had expressed to her that she was unhappy with the course of the hearings.

District Court Judge Michael Singer said he agreed with those concerns.

Kayla Chadwick was first reported missing almost exactly one year ago, having last been seen after an argument with Torrabla.

A grand jury convened to investigate her disappearance, later finding there was probable cause to believe Torralba had interfered with the investigation by moving or hiding a gun used as evidence.

They indicted Torralba, and he was arrested Nov. 8, 2012.

FORT MORGAN - Human remains found on June 27 in a rural area north of Fort Morgan have been positively identified as Kayla Chadwick, a Fort Morgan teen who was reported missing on March 28, 2012.

The remains found in the 19500 block of Morgan County Road W were identified through DNA analysis on Wednesday by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. The location where they were found is about a mile east of Highway 52 and the Fort Morgan Municipal Airport.

This memorial to Kayla Chadwick marks the area where the missing Fort Morgan teens remains were found last month. A memorial service for her is scheduled for Tuesday, July 16 at 11 a.m. at Life Fellowship.
The family of Kayla Chadwick is devastated by the recent discovery and identification of her remains but confident justice will be served.
Chadwick's remains were found June 27, and her identity was confirmed July 3 by DNA analysis.

A memorial service is slated Tuesday, July 16 at 11 a.m. at Life Fellowship Church at Barlow Road and East Eighth Avenue. Following the service, family members plan to go to the site where she was found along Morgan County Road W about a mile east of the Fort Morgan airport to observe a moment of silence.

Kayla was reported missing March 28, 2012, at the age of 17.

A missing person report was filed after she disappeared following an argument with her boyfriend, Ivan Torralba.

He and his mother, Luclia, were arrested for allegedly hiding a gun reportedly brandished during the argument and lying to police about it. Their cases are pending in Logan County District Court in Sterling.

Kayla's mother, Robin Adams, is "devastated," said family spokesperson Christine Ferguson, Adams' sister. "She's barely getting by."

Ferguson added that she does not know how Adams is processing knowing that Kayla was killed and buried in the middle of nowhere.

"She's grateful that she knows where Kayla is now," Ferguson said.

"I'm confident there will be justice," she added.

Several searches for the missing teen in the weeks and months following her disappearance came up empty, despite law enforcement personnel combing the area with dogs, all-terrain vehicles, horses, boats and even a helicopter.

Rumors persisted that Kayla had run away, but friends and family members insisted that she had not.

Kayla was about to graduate from high school and had bought a prom dress -- which, Ferguson pointed out, she never got to wear.

She had also enrolled in the nursing program at Morgan Community College and spent about $700 on textbooks -- which Adams still has, Ferguson said.

Those are not, Ferguson said, the actions of someone about to run away.

FORT MORGAN, Colo. (CBS4) – Police haven’t named any suspects in the death of Fort Morgan teenager Kayla Chadwick who went missing 16 months ago, but they are focusing on her former boyfriend and his mother.

CBS4 Investigator Rick Sallinger obtained statements Chadwick’s boyfriend, Ivan Torralba, and his mother, Lucila Torralba, made to a grand jury. Investigators say the statements aren’t true. Both have been charged with lying to the grand jury

Chadwick had a fight with Ivan Torralba in which he claimed she pulled a gun on him and struck him, drawing blood. She was charged and a warrant was issued for her arrest in part to get her home if it turned out she was simply a runaway. District Attorney Brittny Lewton now calls the gun a weapon of interest in the case.

Before Chadwick’s body was recently found in a field a grand jury had been investigating her disappearance. Ivan Torralba was indicted, accused of tampering with physical evidence involving Chadwick and lying to the grand jury on several questions the prosecutor asked him.

“Prior to March 27, 2012 (when kayla disappeared), did you ever possess a .357 revolver?” the prosecutor asked Ivan Torralba.

“No, I did not ever possess a .357,” he replied.

“Did you go to Rainbow Park with Slava and Jose to retrieve this .357 gun, revolver on the 28th?” the prosecutor asked.


“No, we never went to look for a gun,” Ivan Torralba said.

In each answer prosecutors say Ivan Torralba lied.

CBS4 Legal Analyst Karen Steinhauser says the charges are serious.

“Perjury and attempt to influence a public official are charges that go to the heart of our entire system,” Steinhauser said.

Ivan’s mother Lucila is also charged with lying to the grand jury.

“When was the last time you saw Kayla?” the prosecutor asked her.

“It would probably be like Saturday,” she answered.

Prosecutors believe she lied.

Ivan Torralba’s attorney said in no uncertain terms that his client is not involved in a homicide. He said Torralba is cooperating and assisting in the investigation. The district attorney said that is true only on occasion.

FORT MORGAN - A memorial service was held Tuesday for a Fort Morgan teen whose body was discovered at the end of June. Kayla Chadwick, 17, had been missing for over a year.

The cause of death is unknown, and no one has been charged with the crime.
