Here is an article with more detail. The father just got out of prison in April.. hope they look into him!
ST. MARTINS, Mo. | Several hundred people were searching a rural, wooded area in central Missouri on Thursday for a 9-year-old girl who did not return home after visiting a friend a night earlier.

Cole County Sheriff Greg White said Elizabeth Olten left the friend's house around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday and was supposed to walk about a quarter mile to her home in St. Martins, just west of Jefferson City. She was reported missing around 7 p.m.

Elizabeth was listed as an “endangered missing person” and the FBI joined the case, White said. The sheriff said it did not appear that the girl had run away from home, but no Amber Alert had been issued because there was no evidence of an abduction or foul play.

Onna Adrian, whose daughter-in-law is Elizabeth's older sister, said Elizabeth generally walked home from the friend's house through neighbors' yards rather than along the two-lane county highway that runs past their houses.

Adrian said Elizabeth did not normally hide and, if confronted, would have screamed and tried to run away.

“She is very shy,” Adrian said. “She's not the type to get in a vehicle with anybody.”

Elizabeth, who has long brown hair and brown eyes, is about 5-feet, 2-inches tall and weighs 102 pounds. She was last seen wearing a pink scarf, sweater and T-shirt with butterflies, blue jeans and white shoes.

Adrian said the girl's mother did not want to talk to a reporter Thursday. Elizabeth's father, Dale Olten Sr., has been in a Missouri prison since April serving a four-year sentence for drug possession.

The search on Thursday focused on a section of woods about one-half mile wide and one-half mile long, which police zeroed in on by triangulating the girl's cell phone location, White said. But the phone battery had died by Thursday morning. An uneven terrain, high brush and soaking weather hampered the search effort.

About 200 volunteers showed up to help nearly 100 emergency personnel. White said several square miles had been examined. Vehicles filled the parking lot and crowded streets surrounding a Veterans of Foreign Wars hall being used as a command post.

David Wininger, a volunteer firefighter who helped look until early Thursday morning and returned after work, said it was “overwhelming” and “beautiful” to see the outpouring of assistance. Wininger, 51, said groups of searchers had spread out in lines across fields and woods to cover every square foot.

“It's very brushy. It's very hilly. There's a lot of rocks, trees and brush piles,” Wininger said. “It's a very rough place to be.”

Emergency vehicles from various agencies parked along the highway that runs past several houses in the search area. Among the nearby farm fields is a large, muddy brown pond. Dog teams from the Department of Corrections and an urban search and rescue team joined officials from the nearby fire departments and numerous state and local police agencies.

On Wednesday night, the Missouri State Highway Patrol searched for Elizabeth using a helicopter with a thermal imaging radar. But White said fall foliage hindered that effort. Around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, all but one search team broke.

Highway Patrol Superintendent Col. James Keathley said that helicopter wasn't being used Thursday because of the poor weather.
This makes me sad! I am sure that she is in the woods if her cell phone pinged those woods :( crying

I have to say that I have my oldest son carry a phone to school, he is 8 and it's only for emergency's, but also as a tracking device! I have programmed it so that he can only call out to 911 or the numbers I have programmed into it. He is aloud to have it turned on while he is on the school bus then has to turn it off once he gets there, then can turn it on again when he gets out of school. Hey, it's only an extra $9.99 a month, and it could save his life one day!

Missouri Girl, 9, Vanishes After Leaving Friend's House
Thursday, October 22, 2009

ST. MARTINS, Mo. — Dozens of people were searching a rural, wooded area in central Missouri on Thursday for a 9-year-old girl who did not return home after visiting a friend a night earlier.

Cole County Sheriff Greg White said Elizabeth Olten left the friend's house around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday and was supposed to walk about a quarter mile to her home in St. Martins, just west of Jefferson City. She was reported missing around 7 p.m.

Elizabeth was listed as an "endangered missing person" and the FBI joined the case, White said.

Adrian said Elizabeth did not normally hide out and, if confronted, would have screamed and tried to run away.

"She is very shy," Adrian said. "She's not the type to get in a vehicle with anybody."

The search focused on a section of woods several hundred yards in diameter, which police had narrowed by triangulating the girl's cell phone location, White said. But the battery had died by Thursday morning. An uneven terrain, high brush and soaking weather hampered the search effort.

"If you go to Iowa and look at a flat piece of farmland that's 140 acres, you go, `well it's not that big.' You translate that to Missouri and you use the same thing, you walk a long time to cover that same amount of land," White said. "It's muddy out there now. It's difficult terrain, it's difficult weather."

Emergency vehicles from various agencies were parked along the highway that runs past the houses. Among the nearby farm fields is a large, muddy brown pond.

On Wednesday night, the Missouri State Highway Patrol searched for Elizabeth using a helicopter with a thermal imaging radar. But White said fall foliage hindered that effort. Around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, all but one search team broke.

When the full search of about 60 people resumed later in the morning, a team with dogs used by the Department of Corrections joined officials from nearby fire departments and numerous state and local police agencies.

I heard that too Wrap, but I think he mispoke and meant the parents were suspicious of the phone being found in the woods as evidence she willingly went into the woods, because they said she would never go into the woods.

I want to know why no Amber Alert was issued either! She is only 9 years old, even if she were a run away, she is MISSING and too young to be hiding out somewhere. This reminds me the the Victoria Stafford Case, they waited too long to issue an Amber Alert for her too! We see this ALL too often! It's a disgrace. 🇳🇴

Authorities searching for a missing Cole County, Mo., girl have found a body and arrested a juvenile described as a “person of interest” in the case, authorities announced this afternoon.

The body of Elizabeth Olten, 9, of St. Martins was found deep in the woods away from the initial search area, Cole County Sheriff Greg White announced in a televised press conference. Authorities also recovered Elizabeth’s cell phone, he said.

The person of interest is an older juvenile who was acquainted with Elizabeth, White said. He did not provide the juvenile’s age or say how he knew Elizabeth.

Authorities asked for prayers for her family.

Elizabeth Olten, missing since Wednesday night, was found dead Friday.

Authorities announced that her body had been recovered in a heavily wooded area. This is an area that they have been searching since Wednesday.

Through physical evidence and some written evidence, officials said at a 3 p.m. news briefing, they determined a person of interest.

That person was interviewed and then led officials to the body.

A juvenile, apparently a friend of Elizabeth's, is involved in the case.

No other details were available immediately, and the case remains under investigation.

A written note by an unidentified person led police to a older teen. Police interviewed the teen, who then led police to Elizabeth's body.

Police have the teen in custody. The teen lives in the area and is not connected to the family.

I don't think it is the media's fault - but I do think it is law enforcement and parole offices who allow these perps out of jail freely.

I would wonder if the family knew the teenage murderer of Elizabeth. More to come for sure on this horrific story..and a side note. I wonder if the Ant's have helped in the search for one of these missing girls? I would say NO!

I wonder if in the case of Somer, if the Ant's have sent Ms. Thompson a note of condolences, considering they are part of Kidfinder's and how they brag about aiding in the search of missing children.

Elizabeth Olten - Body Found Friday
Posted on October 23rd, 2009

by Jan Barrett

I have to say I am writing this with tears so please forgive any typos I may make and miss correcting. It is times like this when I hate my job. For the second time in two days I sit here in front of my computer trying to report that the lives of two little girls have been taken. I never met these children but my heart goes out to the families of both. I can’t imagine what they must be going through.

Yesterday 7 year old Somer Renee Thompson’s body was found in a landfill in Georgia. One of her legs was sticking out from under a pile of trash. This precious little girl had been kidnapped and when who ever took her was finished with her they just threw her body away like she was nothing but trash. I pray they find out who did this and make them pay dearly. Personally I don’t think they deserve even a trial. They deserve just what they did to her or worse.

Not long after I reported Somer being found I heard about another little girl from Missouri missing. She is 9 year old Elizabeth Olten. Her mother says she was on her way home from a friend’s house when someone grabbed her. She was last seen around 6:15 pm when she left her friend’s house which was only a few houses down from her own. When she wasn’t home soon, her family started looking for her and notified the police by 7 pm. According to the neighbors Elizabeth knew the neighborhood well and wouldn’t have wandered off alone. In fact family members said she was afraid of the wooded area near their home and of the dark so there is no way she would be out there at night by her own choice.

Well tonight I get a Google alert about Elizabeth Olten and when I went to it, I read that the search has come to an end for 9 year old Elizabeth and it really breaks my heart to say it is a tragic ending. The police say they have recovered the body of Elizabeth Olten in the wooded area.

Apparently they have brought in a juvenile “person of interest” and put them into custody. The Cole County Sheriff Greg White told the reporters that all he would tell them was that this ‘person of interest’ and Elizabeth were acquainted. Other than that all he would say was that the person of interest lived in the area west of Jefferson City and was older than Elizabeth.

Police said that her body was found just before 3 pm Friday. “We were able to obtain some physical evidence and through some analysis of some of the evidence and in all honesty some written evidence, we were able to develop a person of interest,” said Sheriff White. “Once we reached that person and interviewed them, ultimately they led up to where we’ve recovered Elizabeth’s body.”

White says he has spoken with Elizabeth’s mother and he described the family as deeply grieving. “I’m a parent too and I know how I would feel. I would simply leave it to you that they are grieving,” he said.

Simon and I send our deepest condolences to Elizabeth’s family. How does any mother or father or grandparent ever accept the loss of a child through natural death. It is hard I know because I have two sons buried myself that I lost in a premature delivery but to lose a child that someone took and murdered would have to be even harder. I know how hard it was for me in my case, I don’t know how I would handle it if someone killed one of my children or grandchildren but I do know I would be mad as hell and there would be no stopping me until the one responsible is behind bars for life. I know we are told we are supposed to forgive, but how can a parent forgive someone that brutally kills an innocent child. I honestly don’t have an answer for that one.

I will keep my prayers with Elizabeth’s family and with Somer’s family as well. I am still saying my prayers for Haleigh Cummings and Adji Desir and all the other missing children out there. God please help us find an answer on how to stop these innocent children from being taken from us.

For now I beg all you parents that have children out there to please keep a close eye on them. Please take all precautions not to let this happen to your children. I pray that tomorrow morning I wake up and find in my emails another Google alert telling me that Haleigh Cummings and Adji Desir have both been found alive and well. Wouldn’t that be the perfect thing to wake up too?

ST. MARTINS, Mo. – The body of a missing 9-year-old girl was found in a wooded area near Missouri's capital city on Friday, two days after she was last seen walking from a neighbor's home, police said.

Cole County Sheriff Greg White said a juvenile, described as a "suspect," was taken into custody. The juvenile was acquainted with the girl, Elizabeth Olten, White said.

The sheriff did not give any details on how Elizabeth died or about the juvenile in custody except to say that the person lived in the area west of Jefferson City and was older than the girl. Police said Elizabeth's body was found just before 3 p.m.

"We were able to obtain some physical evidence and through some analysis of some of the evidence and in all honesty some written evidence, we were able to develop a person of interest," White said. "Once we reached that person and interviewed them, ultimately they led us to where we've recovered Elizabeth's body."

Elizabeth, of St. Martins, was last seen when she started walking home from a neighbor's house on Wednesday evening, police have said.

White said had spoken with Elizabeth's mother and said the family is "deeply grieving."

"I'm a parent, and I know how I would feel. I would simply leave it to you that they are grieving," he said.

Elizabeth's family and friends have described her as a bashful fourth-grader — the youngest of five children — who loved cats but was afraid of the dark and would not normally have gone into the woods. Some of her family members had spent Friday making buttons with Elizabeth's photo, before learning of her death.

"She was a wonderful, happy, shy child. I never saw her argue with her mother, her sister or anyone," said Liza Adrian, the sister-in-law of Elizabeth's sister, who spoke on behalf of the family during a Friday night news conference.

Elizabeth's father, Dale Olten Sr., learned of her death while watching TV in prison, where he is serving a four-year sentence for drug possession, said family friend Nancy Hanks, who had aided in the search.

"On behalf of the Oltens, I guarantee they appreciate this community — all the outpouring of support — they worked hard" searching for Elizabeth, Hanks said.

Elizabeth's aunt, Vicki Olten, described her niece as an "angel" but declined further comment.

Earlier Friday, about 70 people had searched for Elizabeth on horseback, with all-terrain vehicles and on foot while another 70 investigators checked leads, White said. Several hundred people had joined the search Thursday despite a steady rain and rough terrain.

Police focused their search area after they figured out roughly where Elizabeth's phone was located. White said the phone was later found but declined to say if it had turned up evidence.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol searched by helicopter with thermal imaging radar, and the Missouri State Water Patrol checked ponds in the area with sonar.

Highway Patrol Superintendent Col. James Keathley said he wishes the outcome was better.

"It's been quite an ordeal for the last few days. There's a lot emotions involved in this. It's been tough on everybody involved in this case," Keathley said.

David Schulte, who lives nearby, said Elizabeth typically would walk through his front yard about 30 or 40 feet away from the road on her way back home from the friend's house. Schulte said he didn't know Elizabeth well but that she had come through the neighborhood to sell cookie dough for a school fundraiser.

Schulte, who had helped with the search, said the area around where the phone was transmitting signals was about one-quarter of a mile away from the county highway and in the middle of the woods. He said it is easy to get turned around and difficult to hold straight search lines because the terrain is all "ridges and valleys" along with brambles.

"You'd have to want to be back there," said Schulte, before police announced that Elizabeth's body had been found.

Cole County Prosecutor Mark Richardson did not immediately return a call seeking comment Friday.

Authorities have charged a 15-year-old with first-degree murder for the death of 9-year-old girl in central Missouri.
Cole County Juvenile Court Administrator Michael Couty (koo-TEE’) said Saturday that the 15-year-old is being detained for the death of Elizabeth Olten. Police did not release the teen’s gender or name.
Elizabeth’s body was found Friday — two days after she went missing — after the suspect led police to a wooded area near her home west of Jefferson City. Cole County Sheriff Greg White said Saturday that the girl was found in an area that had previously been searched but she had been “very well concealed.”
White said Elizabeth was acquainted with the suspect but declined to elaborate.

The authorities have asked for a certification hearing to determine if the 15 year old can be tried as an adult or juvenile.

If courts determine in a closed hearing that the child should be tried as an adult, more details will be made available to the public.

Sheriff White says the investigation is continuing.

He met with Elizabeth’s mother Saturday morning. She expressed deep gratitude for all the efforts to find her daughter, who had been reported missing on Wednesday evening shortly after she failed to return home from a friend’s house.

White said an autopsy is being conducted today. White did not discuss possible causes of death.

Authorities think that Elizabeth’s original encounter with the suspect occurred about the time she was reported missing.

White had originally said since Wednesday night that no evidence of foul play had turned up. He said today that had been true until late Friday morning, shortly before authorities announced they had found Elizabeth’s body in the woods near her home.

The juvenile suspect remains in the custody of Cole County Juvenile Authority.

15-year-old charged with First-degree murder of Elizabeth Olten/ hearing for the suspected killer of Elizabeth Olten will be open to the public. Empty Missouri law

Post by Nama Sat Oct 24, 2009 2:46 pm

Under Missouri law, children as young as 12 can be charged as adults with first-degree murder. But the case must start in the juvenile court system while a hearing is held on whether to transfer it to an adult court. Juvenile court records generally are closed under Missouri law unless a judge grants an exception.

Cole County Juvenile Court Administrator Michael Couty said the suspect was in the custody of the juvenile justice system and would undergo a background and psychological check. Couty planned to request a hearing next week before a family court judge to determine whether the suspect should be tried as a juvenile or as an adult. That hearing would be closed to the public.

Police would not say Saturday whether there had been a confession, nor would they describe the teen's demeanor or offer more details about written documents that led them to the suspect. White also declined to say whether calls had been made from Elizabeth's cell phone, which was found "very, very close" to her.

Police narrowed the primary search area after tracing the phone's general location, but the phone's battery had died by Thursday morning.

It seems strange that LE in this case is being so very careful to NOT release anything other than discovery of Elizabeth's body, and that a "person" is in custody. So very careful to not even say if the "person" is male or female.

COLE COUNTY -- Cole County Prosecutor Mark Richardson Monday talked about the Elizabeth Olten case and the charges the suspect faces.

He said the fact that the sheriff wants first degree murder charges shows that the sheriff believes Elizabeth's murder was premeditated.

Before the 15 year old can be formally charged there must first be a certification hearing to determine if the teen will stand trial as an adult.

If the teen is tried as an adult, it would be held in open court and evidence will be made public.

Missouri law does not allow the death penalty for anyone younger than 16 years old facing a first degree murder charge.

The maximum sentence would be life in prison without parole.

Volunteers, officers thanked for help in Olten case

By Bob Watson
bwatson@newstribune.com
Sheriff: 'This is a good area, with good people'

Published: Sunday, October 25, 2009 2:17 PM CDT

They came out by the dozens -- law enforcement, firefighters, first responder-types and just citizen volunteers -- all with the hopes of finding a missing little girl.

Even after officials discovered Friday that Elizabeth Olten had been murdered, her family still was thankful.

"I met with Elizabeth's mom before I came here," Cole County Sheriff Greg White told reporters Saturday morning, during a briefing at the St. Martins VFW Hall. "As you all know, anyone walking through this is going through just a horrific grieving process. It's a very difficult time for the family. ...

"(But) they asked me to share that they had deep gratitude for all of the efforts that were put forward."

White and Maj. Ron Replogle of the Missouri Highway Patrol's Criminal Investigations Bureau praised and thanked the many trained emergency people who came to help with the search Wednesday night, Thursday and Friday.

"Obviously, this was a case that needed the resources of many different agencies," Replogle said. "It was tremendous to see how all the agencies worked together, and brought this case to the results that we have today."

White said he felt "deeply blessed and pleased with the volunteers that we've had and shown up and worked with us. They're incredible."

But perhaps the biggest surprise, to some, was the response from mid-Missourians who came out just to help.

"I've gotten calls from all over the country -- people were astounded that we had more than 50 volunteers -- much less the 300 when we cut it off," White said. "This is a good area, with good people (who) desire to serve."

The sheriff acknowledged some were unhappy they were turned away, after volunteering to help.

"No fault with any of the people that couldn't work with us, but really wanted to," he said. "If you've never worked the concept of search-and-rescue before, you have to truly have coordinated effort.

"And, if you let people just run through an area, you lose that coordinated process. ... The fact is, there's a saturation limit to how many people we can use at a given time (and) we had reached that saturation point."

More help came from the FBI.

"If you had a kidnapping, the FBI has jurisdiction," White said, so their presence -- at least in part -- was doing basic work that would be useful if the Olten case had been a kidnapping.

"We have a very close working relationship with our (local FBI) office and the supervisory special agent," White added. "I contacted him early (and) he did some checking and said that resources were available if we desired them ... and they have some depth, certainly, from across the nation that's more than we can generate."

White also noted he got phone calls from Gov. Jay Nixon and U.S. Rep. Ike Skelton, both voicing concerns and pledging support if it were needed.

Police served a warrant at a neighbor’s house just hours after finding the body of a 9-year-old Missouri girl.

The Cole County Sheriff’s Department served the warrant Friday night just several homes south of where Elizabeth Olten lived in St. Martins. Records don’t indicate the type of warrant, and the department refused to comment Monday.

Authorities are seeking a first-degree murder charge against a 15-year-old. Police previously said the suspect lived near Elizabeth but did not release the teen’s name or gender.

A person who lives in the vicinity and spoke on the condition of anonymity said Monday a 15-year-old girl lives at the house where Elizabeth was last seen. The individual didn’t want to be identified to avoid jeopardizing the investigation.

The suspect in Elizabeth’s murder is a GIRL. OMG!

Juvenile Authority Director Michael Couty held a press conference this morning at the Prenger Juvenile Center announcing the certification hearing will be held on Nov. 18 at 8 a.m. for the 15-year-old girl suspected of killing Elizabeth Olten.

The certification hearing will determine if the 15-year-old will be tried as an adult or as a juvenile. If a judge determines that the 15-year-old should be tried as an adult, more details about the suspect will be made available to the public.

For some reason, I believed it was a girl from the beginning - they usually will put a male juvenile
or 15 year old male in their reports - this time they did not until they revealed it was a girl. My god, I guess
we all should be aware not to profile for males only.
Truly its become a dangerous world.
