ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Orange County sheriff deputies say a 170-page manual is circulating around Central Florida. It shows people, step-by-step, how to molest children. It also includes where to find potential victims.
“I've never seen anything like it. It was pretty amazing when I first saw it just because how detailed it was,” said Detective Philip Graves with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (full interview). I have attached below

Deputies with the sheriff’s sexual offender surveillance squad have been aware of the manual for the past six months. The sheriff's office received it through an email listserve.

“We personally haven't worked a case on it, but it has been located within our region,” Graves said.

Graves told WFTV that sending the manual by email or possessing it is not a crime in Orange County. However, federal investigators are trying to track down where the manual initially came from.

"I was more amazed that someone would be as bold as to create an actual 170-page document that would detail how to do it," he said.

The author uses an alias in the manual. He calls himself "the mule." Deputies believe whoever is responsible may have committed crimes against children.

Turning now to a really grotesque story: there was growing outrage and disgust over a sex offender`s how-to guide. You heard me right. There is an actual molestation manual being circulated over e-mail. This handbook for sickos is 170 pages long.
Police think it`s been circulating for months now. It lays out -- are you sitting down -- the best places to find young victims, how to lure kids and how to keep them quiet.

DET. PHILLIP GRAVES, ORANGE COUNTY SHERRIF`S OFFICE: It`s very detailed. It shows very clearly how these acts can occur, how to begin them, how to end them. I mean, from point -- from the beginning to a point to the end. And if somebody is out there looking for this information, it is available out there. And that`s the sad thing especially with the Internet how available it is.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: For now, the author of this sicko manual -- sicko, sicko manual -- is a mystery. Police say he refers to himself as "The Mule". I have another term for him but we can`t say it on the air.
Get this. It`s legal for somebody to possess and distribute this how- to guide. So what can cops do about it?
Straight out to my fantastic expert panel. But I have to start with former prosecutor Robin Sax, author of "Predators and Child Molesters".
Robin, were you surprised to hear that a 170-page molestation manual is out there on the Internet?

ROBIN SAX, AUTHOR, "PREDATORS AND CHILD MOLESTERS": I am not surprised that this is out on the Internet. I`m not surprised as a prosecutor. I`m also not surprised as a parent. And I`m not surprised as a concerned member of society.
Right now online you can find how to do hate crimes, how to make a bomb, how to commit suicide. So it`s not surprising to find how to molest a child. But what is surprising is the amount of pages and energy, which is very consistent with the amount of time and energy a perpetrator will take to learn and study their craft in order to trap their prey.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, I am very honored to welcome someone who is my hero, Erin Runnion. Erin`s precious 5-year-old daughter Samantha was abducted and murdered back in 2002. Her killer was sentenced to death.
Erin, you started the Joyful Child Foundation in your precious daughter`s honor. You`re my hero for how you`ve handled this incredibly devastating life experience and turned it into something positive by working -- working around the clock to make sure it can`t happen again. And then you hear something like this that somebody has put out a 170-page manual to instruct other people, ok, on how to abduct and molest children. What runs through you?

RUNNION: Well, it`s infuriating. But at the same time, I`m really glad that you`re sharing this with the public because people, I think, don`t realize that most offenders are in fact groomers. They take a great deal of time and care into picking who their victims will be and how they`re going to molest them, how they`re going to gain access, trust of the family so they can gain access to that family.
A how-to manual that`s 170 pages kind of speaks to the kind of calculating person we`re talking about. And the vast majority of offenders are that way. It`s infuriating.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, it`s so bizarre because it seems like there`s one sicko trying to encourage others sickos to do the same thing. And that brings me to my big issue. Are pedophiles all members of some sick cult?
You don`t hear about murderers or robbers circulating how-to manuals. Why are predators, child predators different? I`ve got to bring in criminologist Casey Jordan. Why would a pedophile be so interested in encouraging others to also go out there and molest?

CASEY JORDAN, CRIMINOLOGIST: Well, in one sentence I would have to say there`s strength in numbers. It`s a little bit sick but they are very acutely aware of their aberrant behavior not being acceptable to society.
But if you find somebody else who thinks the same way you think, has the same fantasies and interested in the same disgusting pornography or activity, it makes them feel more normalized. They know society still rejects them so they just want to hang out with other people who are like them.
A manual like this can be not just a recruiting tool but also a way through the Internet of molesters finding one another to give themselves a sense of security. That they are not alone, there are others like them. And the more interest is in the manual, the more normal they feel.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Now, "The Mule", that`s what this sicko calls himself, obviously, a drug mule is slang for a drug trafficker. So Robin Sax, could this mule be someone who traffics children -- the person who is the author of this?

SAX: Well, that`s certainly the logical conclusion. And given the fact that sex trafficking is the second biggest crime here in the United States, it`s not just an overseas issues, and how easily the Internet is used, that, just the possession of that manual may tip people off to, oh, that`s someone who can be trafficking --

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Bold, brazen, and sick -- sick in the head. Tips on how to molest a child circulated by e-mail -- an entire molestation how-to guide; where to find potential victims, how to lure them, how to keep them from telling their parents they`ve been abused.
Some sicko actually took the time to write 170 pages on this subject.

Caller MARY ANN: Yes, I have two questions and one comment. One question is, is there any way they can track down by an ID number of the people who are visiting the site? I know that the one, probably, that put it on there is too smart, especially for somebody like me, to figure it out. But I`m sure there`s people out there that can find the people that are visiting the site. And is there any way that anyone can, like, their local sheriff`s department, make a, you know, a search warrant on their computer?

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes. Well, you raise a very, very interesting question. And I want to go to Ed Smart, president of Surviving Parents Coalition. And you are currently on a ride for your life, spreading the message of child safety. Your daughter, Elizabeth, was 14 when she was abducted from her bedroom at knifepoint. And thank God, she was found alive nine months later. One of her kidnappers pleaded guilty. The other hasn`t even been tried yesterday.
Ed Smart, what really disturbs so many people is that this is not illegal. You can write a 170-page molestation manual and distribute it. It`s not illegal to write it, it`s not illegal to send it.

ED SMART, RIDEFORTHEIRLIVES.ORG (via telephone): Absolutely. It`s just completely outrageous. I mean, this manual was one thing, but to think that we have online videos of how to do it makes it even worse and even more disgusting.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, I just don`t understand, if, let`s say a suspected terrorist is writing e-mails and they`re intercepted, where he appears to be planning a crime, that person can be arrested. But for some reason, Ed, this is covered under the First Amendment.

SMART: Absolutely. It`s, you know, to me, really it`s the means of child pornography and it should be illegal. I think we need to do something about that because it really is not right.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, it`s out of control. Erin Runnion, it occurs to me that perhaps there might be some way to redeem the situation if police are able to use it as an investigative tool. In other words, figure out who is getting this e-mail and that person, then, is on the radar as a possible sex offender.

RUNNION: Absolutely. And they can. They can track the IP addresses and even sometimes get the computer serial numbers, which give them a town to go to. So there are investigators who are very skilled at doing the computer forensics on the e-mail itself. But it`s hard to find the root source.

I'm sorry if my last post scared everyone away... I am just so fed up with hearing about men molesting children!! It just makes me SICK!! The frustrating part is not knowing what to do (other than pray, which is the best thing to do).

As much as I enjoy the Internet, and all it has to offer (ie. being a part of this website!), I am horrified at how it has become the downfall of many, many men & ruined the lives of even more children. There must be a way to monitor what is allowed on the Internet - I guess LE is trying, but it doesn't seem very effective! In the meantime, more lives will continue to be ruined... so very sad.

Consumers Call for Boycott of Amazon Over 'Pedophile's Guide'

Amazon is selling an e-book entitled "The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure," and shocked consumers across the nation now are calling for a boycott of the online retail giant.

The e-book, authored by Phillips Greaves, was published late last month, according to product details on Amazon.com. It sells for $4.79 on the company's Kindle Store.

"This is my attempt to make pedophile situations safer for those juveniles that find themselves involved in them, by establishing certian [sic] rules for these adults to follow," a product description reads. "I hope to achieve this by appealing to the better nature of pedosexuals, with hope that their doing so will result in less hatred and perhaps liter sentences should they ever be caught."

The content has led to hundreds of tweets criticizing Amazon for allowing the title to be sold. A Facebook page has been created calling for a boycott of the Seattle-based company.

" This is totally unacceptable," one Facebook posting reads. "This is not about freedom of speech. This is a HOW TO GUIDE FOR PEDOPHILES! Shame on you Amazon.com."

But Amazon is standing by the decision to sell the e-book.

"Amazon believes it is censorship not to sell certain books simply because we or others believe their message is objectionable," the company said in a written statement. "Amazon does not support or promote hatred or criminal acts, however, we do support the right of every individual to make their own purchasing decisions."

Child online safety advocacy group Enough is Enough says it isn't surprised that someone would publish such a book, but believes that Amazon should remove it. It says selling the book lends the impression that child abuse is normal.

That doesn't mean Amazon should be prohibited from selling it, counters Christopher Finan, president of the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression. He said that Amazon has the right under the First Amendment to sell any book that is not child pornography or legally obscene. Finan said Greaves' book doesn't amount to either because it does not include illustrations.

This isn't the first time Amazon has sold material that promotes illegal activity. It is currently accepting pre-orders for the hardcover version of "I Am the Market: How to Smuggle Cocaine by the Ton, in Five Easy Lessons" by Luca Rastello.

Nor is it the first time Amazon has come under attack for selling objectionable content in its store. In 2002, the United States Justice Foundation, a conservative group, threatened to sue Amazon for selling "Understanding Loved Boys and Boylovers." That title is still available through Amazon.

In 2009, Amazon stopped selling "RapeLay," a first-person video game in which the protagonist stalks and then rapes a mother and her daughters, after it was widely condemned in the media and by various interest groups.

I am having a hard time with this. I am no prude but Amazon needs to stop marketing this book. I don't give a damn about illustrations. It's the Content that is highly upsetting. Anyone who would purchase this book should be watched online by the Feds. Seriously. What other reason could there be for someone to buy it? Once again, this world is really something else. I shutter to think what it will be like for all of our innocent grandchildren.

It wasn't immediately clear whether Amazon.com Inc. had pulled the item, or whether the author withdrew it. Amazon did not immediately return messages Thursday.

The book, "The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure: a Child-lover's Code of Conduct," offers advice to pedophiles on how to make a sexual encounter with a child as safe as possible. It includes first-person descriptions of such encounters, purportedly written from a child's point of view.

The availability of the book calls into question whether Amazon has any procedures — or even an obligation — to vet books before they are sold in its online stores. The title is an electronic book available for Amazon's Kindle e-reader and the company's software for reading Kindle books on mobile phones and computers. Amazon allows authors to submit their own works and shares revenue with them.
Amazon issues guidelines banning certain materials, including those deemed offensive. However, the company doesn't elaborate on what constitutes offensive content, saying simply that it is "probably what you would expect." Amazon also doesn't promise to remove or protect any one category of books.

Once discovered Wednesday, the book triggered outrage from commenters on sites such as Twitter. Some people threatened to boycott the online store until Amazon removed the book. Two petitions on Facebook alone won more than 13,500 supporters.

On Anderson Cooper 360 last night, he was saying that CNN kept calling Amazon in Seattle and they would be transferred to "media" and it would go to voicemail. That was night before last they started calling. Then, today..they sent one of their reporter's to Seattle headquarter's. He was never seen by anyone in the press room after a two hour wait. Amazon finally took the book down. However, there is another book this idiot wrote and CNN wanted to know about that book as Cooper said it was quite similar to this new one. He said finally, about 6pm..Amazon called and said they had taken the 2nd book down...when asked any questions at all, their answer was "no comment."

That "boy" book is still up on Amazon, according to Anderson Cooper. I applaud CNN for their perseverance!

Pedophile Guide' Author Arrested on Obscenity Charges

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The author of a self-published how-to guide for pedophiles that was pulled from Amazon.com last month after widespread outrage has been arrested on obscenity charges.
Phillip Ray Greaves, a 47-year-old retired nurse's aide in Pueblo, Colo., was arrested at his home by sheriff's deputies from Florida's Polk County and charged with violating Florida's obscenity law.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said his office was able to arrest Greaves on Florida charges because Greaves sold and mailed his book -- "The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure: a Child-lover's Code of Conduct" -- directly to undercover Polk deputies. Greaves even signed the book, Judd said.
"He very proudly sold us his personal copy," Judd told The Associated Press. "I was outraged by the content. It was clearly a manifesto on how to sexually batter children ... You just can't believe how absolutely disgusting it was."
Greaves told FoxNews.com last month that nearly 300 copies of his self-published e-book were sold on Amazon.com's Kindle Store in 24 hours prior to its disappearance from the site on Nov. 11. He said he also received more than 3,000 complaints about the $4.79 e-book, which seeks to make "pedophile situations safer for those juveniles that find themselves involved in them," according to the product description that was posted while the book was available for sale.

Greaves said he does not promote pedophilia, but that it "is something that I have sympathy for because of my own childhood."
Greaves said he was exposed to sex when he was 7 years old. "I was not molested, but I was exposed to sex at an early age … Sometimes those relationships are positive. No, I do not advocate pedophilia. I just feel that I understand it."
Pueblo Police Chief James Billings told FoxNews.com last month that his department would conduct a "cursory review" of Greaves' material.
"We have no indication that a crime has been committed," Billings said last month. "But we are looking at the situation to have a better understanding of what this book is all about and to see if there's something we should be concerned about."
On Monday, Laurie Shorter, a spokeswoman for the Pueblo County Sheriff's Department, said Greaves would be held in the county jail on the Florida charge. He was being booked Monday morning and it was unclear if he has an attorney. Judd said Greaves could be in Florida as early as Monday night.
"If he will waive extradition, it's my goal for him to eat processed turkey on Christmas Day in the Polk County Jail," Judd said.
Denver attorney David Lane, who has handled several high-profile First Amendment cases, said Florida could have a hard time extraditing Greaves, who is charged with distribution of obscene material depicting minors engaged in conduct harmful to minors.
He is entitled to a hearing where he can argue he should not be sent there to face charges.
"The main question is whether what he's accused of in Florida would be a crime in Colorado," Lane said. "Obviously, it's not a crime in Colorado because he hasn't been arrested here."
Writs of extradition -- the paperwork necessary to send somebody to another state -- are routinely signed by Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter, a former Denver district attorney. But Lane, who is not affiliated with this case, said it involves a different set of issues.
"Most of other extradition cases present clear-cut cases, the defendant was dealing drugs in that other state or some other crime that is also illegal here," Lane said.
Ritter's spokesman, Evan Dreyer, did not immediately return a message.
Greaves has no criminal record, but his self-published book of advice on how to make sexual encounters with children safe caused a flap when it showed up on Amazon in November. The book was later removed from the site.
Judd, known throughout Florida as a crusader against child predators, said he was incensed when he heard about the book and that no one had arrested Greaves for selling it.
"What's wrong with a society that has gotten to the point that we can't arrest child pornographers and child molesters who write a book about how to rape a child?" Judd said.
The book included first-person descriptions of sexual encounters, purportedly written from a child's point of view.
Greaves argues in the book that pedophiles are misunderstood, as the word literally means to love a child. He adds that it is only a crime to act on sexual impulses toward children, and offers advice that purportedly allows pedophiles to abide by the law.
Judd said he and his detectives got Greaves to sell the book to them for $50; he sent it through the mail and told officers it was his last copy.
"If we can get jurisdiction ... we're coming after you," Judd said. "There's nothing in the world more important than our children."
