Amber Alerts and missing children cases: Brian Kenney found, Amber Alert canceled, mother in custody

An Amber Alert had been issued this morning for 3-year-old Brian Kenney by New Castle County, Delaware police. The Amber Alert was cancelled at 12:40 p.m., today after the boy was found. His mother is now in custody and is believed to be involved in the kidnapping.

Brian Kenney’s father, 24, contacted police at approximately 2:20 a.m., Tuesday morning, May 11, 2010, stating that he awoke and was pistol whipped by three men who were in his home. The father states that he was knocked unconscious and when he came to his three-year-old son, Brian Kenney, and Brian’s mother, Ashlie Stumbers, 24, were gone.

New Castle County Police Spokesperson Senior Corporal Trinidad Navarro said earlier, “The victim believes the mother may be involved in the abduction as she does not regularly stay with him and he has full custody of the child.”

An Amber Alert had been issued, but was later cancelled when police located Brian Kenney and his mother at an undisclosed location.

The gunmen remain on the loose. Authorities have not said if Brian Kenney has been returned to his father or not.

What kind of Mother kidnaps her child?

Police say 3-year-old Brian Kenney, who was reportedly abducted at gunpoint from his father's home, is now safe and back with his father.
New Castle County police say the boy's mother, 24-year-old Ashlie Stumbers, disappeared from the home at the time of the abduction and police are unsure if she was involved in the kidnapping or not. She was found in Wilmington and was released from police custody.

The investigation is continuing, and there are no further details available on how Kenney was located and retrieved by police.

Police say the 24-year-old father was awakened early Tuesday by three gunmen beating him with the butt of a handgun. He told police he had been beaten unconscious, and when he awoke, the boy and the boy's mother were missing. He told police he believed Stumbers may have played a role in his son's abduction.

The child and his father were reunited Tuesday afternoon. Delaware State Police issued an Amber Alert for Brian and canceled it at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday.

The suspects remain unknown, but according to the Amber Alert one of the gunmen was white and the other two were black.
