A longtime friend of Steven Powell said she had told police last year he had lots of pornography and had been "obsessed" with his daughter-in-law, Susan Powell.

Sandy Crain Anderson said she had given the information to West Valley City Police in January 2010, weeks after Susan Powell disappeared, The Salt Lake Tribune reported Sunday.

Anderson said she called police nine months later, after Steven Powell told her police had overlooked his porn collection as well as clothing and journals belonging to Susan at his Puyallup, Wash., home.

In July, Anderson said, police told her they had lost the information and asked her to resend it, and that may have helped lead police back to his home, the Tribune said.

The Tribune said police searched Powell's home Aug. 25 and seized items including allegedly voyeuristic and sexually explicit images of girls and women, including Susan Powell.

Anderson said when she figured out in January 2010 the Utah woman who disappeared from her home was Susan Powell, "I realized I at least owed a call to the police to say I was friends with this person who'd been obsessed all these years with Susan."

Anderson said he had been "hung up on her sexually, it seemed" in 2002 and in summer 2009 said he still had "that issue of being in love with Susan."

The Tribune said West Valley police did not return a call for comment.

PUYALLUP, Washington (Isabelle Zehnder reporting) – The man who wins the award for the most patience, perseverance, poise, and predictability in the case of missing Utah mom, Susan Cox Powell, is her father, Charles “Chuck” Cox.

For twenty-one months Chuck has painfully talked about a daughter he loves and misses so very much. He’s worked diligently with Susan’s friends and other family members to keep her name and picture in the media.

He’s faced the cameras during some of the lowest points of his life, fighting for his daughter, being her voice when her husband and father-in-law tried to discredit her.

Through not only attacks against his daughter, but attacks against him and his wife, Chuck stood tall and he stood strong.

Many have praised Chuck for his strength and dignity on Facebook pages set up in honor of his daughter, and through personal conversations. They now want to share their thoughts publicly.

Susan’s best friend, Kiirsi Hellewell, said, “In the past 21 months I have gotten to know Susan's dad, Chuck Cox, very well. He is a terrific person and human being--fair, honest, loyal. And a wonderful father: he loves his family with all his heart.

“It has been an added grief and pain to him that he has not been allowed to see his grandchildren for the past year and a half. They are a part of Susan, his missing daughter, and he has not been allowed to see them, make sure they're all right, spend time with them.

“One thing he's impressed on me from the very beginning is that we need to stay away from any kind of accusations towards anyone in Susan's disappearance. He has told me this over and over and over in the past 21 months .

“He has repeatedly asked me to make sure that the Facebook group and page for Susan Cox Powell stays friendly, positive, and accusation-free. He has even done this in the face of hurtful, false accusations of abuse and slander from Josh and Steve Powell towards him, his wife Judy, and others who love and care about Susan.

Patience and perserverance pay off

Patience and perseverance is paying off for Chuck. For the past 21 months he has worried about the wellbeing of his grandchildren who have been in the custody of his son-in-law, Josh, and living with his father, Steve, and three of Josh's adult siblings.

The Powell men have withheld the children from Chuck, which has been heart-wrenching for him and his family.

Chuck has known for years that Susan was uncomfortable around her father-in-law, Steve Powell, he just never knew why.

Now that Steve has been arrested on 14 charges of voyeurism and possession of child pornography Chuck is happy that his grandchildren are out of the Powell's custody and in state custody pending a hearing for temporary custody scheduled Wednesday.

Chuck and his wife will try to gain temporary custody of Charlie, 6, and Braden, 4 at that hearing. Chuck said they are ready, willing, and able to care for the boys mental, emotional, psychological, and physical wellbeing..

Within weeks of Susan’s disappearance in early December 2009, her husband Josh Powell moved their two young boys, then ages 2 and 4, from their home in West Valley City, Utah, to live with Josh’s father, Steve, at his Puyallup home. Josh remains the only person of interest in Susan's disappearance.

On August 25, police executed a search warrant on Steve Powell’s home and on Josh’s van. They seized several computers as well as boxes of items from the home and van. Detectives say that among those things were Susan’s teenage journals and Steve’s personal journals. Steve publicly announced that information found in his journals would be embarrassing.

Detectives found thousands of photos of women and young girls in various degrees of undress, some were nude, on Steve's computers. Some photos were of Susan. They say they’ve only gone through between 5 and 10% of Steve’s computer files.

Susan’s friends have long-said Susan did not want to be around Steve and that she told them he’d made sexual advances toward her.

Over the past few months things have heated up between the Cox and Powell families.

Steve and Josh made every attempt to discredit Susan at a time when she was unable to defend herself. It appears their goal was to lead people to believe Susan was mentally unstable, overly sexual, was sexually attracted to her father-in-law Steve Powell, and ran off with another man, to name a few.

The Powell men even published several pages from Susan’s teenage journals several months ago with the promise in July to publish many more. They claimed to have some 2,000 pages of Susan’s childhood and teenage journals in their possession.

Susan’s friends and family fought back letting the world know that none of what Steve and Josh were saying was true.

PUYALLUP, Wash. — Last week's decision to take Josh Powell's two young boys from their house was made by the Pierce County Sheriff's Office, according to state social services officials.

On Wednesday, Powell — the husband of missing West Valley woman Susan Cox Powell — and her parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, will square off in court for a hearing on the grandparents' petition to take custody of their two grandsons, ages 4 and 6.

The children were removed from the home Thursday night after Steven Powell, Josh Powell's father, was arrested and charged with possession of child porn and 14 counts of voyeurism. He remained in the Pierce County Jail Monday on a cash only $200,000 bail.

While state officials in Washington have the authority to ask law enforcement to remove children from homes that they feel pose a possible danger, in this case it was the sheriff's office that made the determination to remove the children, said Sherry Hill, communications director for the Washington Department of Social and Health Services' Children's Administration.

"They determined there may be some sort of harm to the children or they may need to be protected in some way. They chose to put the children in protective custody," she said without going into detail.

Hill was not allowed to talk to about any specifics of the Powell case. Calls made to the spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff Office Monday either rang without an answer or went to a voice mail that was full.

But in general, Hill said once a child is placed in protective custody in a foster home, the state has 72 hours to file a case in juvenile court. She said her department will conduct its own investigation and choose whether to file a motion there to continue protective custody.

KSL legal analyst Marguerite Driessen said she thinks Chuck Cox West may have a good chance of winning custody of the children. "If the choice is between grandfather Chuck Cox and foster care, his chances are pretty good," she said.

The Cox family's petition to gain custody of their grandchildren is a separate matter held in a separate court, Hill said.

It is likely the two courts will be communicating with each other to make sure conflicting orders aren't issued from each jurisdiction, she said. Either court could determine whether it's best to place the children back with the father, place them with their grandparents, with other relatives or keep them in foster care.

Susan Cox Powell has been missing since December of 2009. Josh Powell has retained custody of their children since her disappearance, rarely allowing his in-laws, Chuck and Judy Cox, to see them and at one point even filed a restraining order against Chuck Cox.

Steven Powell's arrest followed several bizarre interviews he gave to the media the month before when he hinted at an affair between him and his daughter-in-law. A late-August search conducted by West Valley police of the Powell home in Puyallup, Wash., resulted in thousands of pornographic images allegedly belonging to Steven Powell being seized. Many of the pictures and videos were of children. Some were of Susan, according to authorities, and appeared to be taken without permission.

Should Powell, who was fired from his job at the Washington Department of Corrections as a delivery driver after his arrest, make bail, a judge ordered that he cannot go outside the Seattle and Puyallup areas, cannot have contact with the alleged victims or come within 1,000 feet of their residence. He will also be prohibited from having any contact at all with children 18 and under and must stay away from schools and playgrounds.

If he returns to his home and Josh Powell retains custody of his boys, that could mean Josh Powell and the children would have to live elsewhere if exceptions to the judge's order aren't made.

Steven Powell's next court hearing is scheduled for Oct. 11.

Police continue investigating images seized from home of Steve Powell

Puyallup, Wash. • Investigators continue to sift through thousands of photographic images seized from the home of missing Utah woman’s father-in-law and a sheriff’s spokesman said Monday that more charges are possible.

Ed Troyer, spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, said one focus is whether anyone else who lived in Steve Powell’s home in the Country Hollow subdivision "knew about or looked at those photos."

"We haven’t ruled anybody else in or out," Troyer said.

Investigators also are reviewing whether any lewd images were emailed from computers taken from Powell’s home, which could bring additional charges, such as trafficking.

"You sure hope that is not going to happen, but we’ll see," he said.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested Powell on Thursday on 14 counts of voyeurism and one count of possessing an image of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Those counts were based on images allegedly taken between 2006 and 2007, but Prosecutor Grant Blinn said in a court hearing last week that images were apparently taken over a 10-year span.

Among them were photos of Susan Cox Powell, who was married to Josh Powell, Steve’s son. Powell has acknowledged on national television that he was in love with Susan despite her marriage to his son, feelings he also apparently discussed with his daughter-in-law and a close friend.

Susan disappeared from her home in West Valley City on Dec. 6, 2009, and has not been found despite widespread publicity about the case and numerous searches stretching from Utah’s West Desert to Ely, Nev.

Powell, who had entered a plea of not guilty, is being held in the Pierce County Jail on a $200,000 cash or bond bail. Michael R. Kawamura of the Pierce County Dept. of Assigned Counsel, who is representing Powell for a limited purpose, filed a motion Monday asking that bail be reduced.

Powell declined a request from The Salt Lake Tribune for an interview. He is currently in the county’s main jail and, with the exception of his attorney, is allowed to meet with visitors for only one hour a week. Family members have already visited him, The Tribune has learned.

Troyer said Pierce County investigators have reviewed only 5 percent to 10 percent of the material seized from Powell’s home on Aug. 25. Those items included computers, videotapes and photographs.

The initial charges against Powell were filed quickly and he was arrested so "we didn’t have any other victims," Troyer said.

That’s also why police took Powell’s two grandsons, Charlie, 6, and Braden, 4, into protective custody, Troyer said.

"With what we found, the children were going to be removed," he said. "It wouldn’t have been prudent to leave them behind."

He added that Child Protective Services "put them in a good receiving home."

On Sunday, Troyer sent a message on his Twitter account asking the public to "keep the heat on and get that clue or break and help West Valley close the Susan Cox Powell Case with an arrest!"

"We want to keep everybody interested and if somebody knows anything to come tell," he said. "Obviously, one strange thing leads to another in this case."

I'm thinking more and more that Josh had been poisoning Susan and the fatal dose was the night she was last seen....with the "special" pancake recipe he got from his father that evening. It took him four hours to prepare pancakes and scrambled eggs. He served each person their own individual plates. I think that the wet spots that were being dried by the fans was from vomit. I do believe that Steve Powell dictated what Josh was doing and maybe even helped with the disposal of Susan's body. I really would like to know where Steven Powell was during that time.

Family members have visited Steven Powell..........maybe Josh had to talk to daddy about what to do next. Hope there is video and audio of their conversation.

Susan Powell, Missing Utah Woman Case Gets Stranger and Stranger

Susan Cox Powell, 28, a Utah mother of two small boys was last seen on December 6, 2009. Her husband, Josh Powell told authorities that he took their two children, then ages 2 and 4 out in the middle of a snow storm to go camping, later that night. He claims his wife wasn’t feeling well so she decided to stay home. She has not been seen since.

About a month after Susan disappeared Josh packed up his kids and moved from Utah to Puyallup, Washington where his father, Steven Powell lived. Josh and his father both claimed that they believed that Susan was alive and had run off to be with another man, but Susan’s family claims that Susan would never have left her sons like that.

Steven Powell claimed that his daughter-in-law was a very flirtatious, sexual being, trying to sell a totally different side of her than that known of her family and very close friends. The question remains, is Steven Powell speaking the truth or is this some sort of fantasy that he has about his daughter-in-law?

After a search of the Powell home in Washington, police discovered some disturbing information about Steven Powell himself. They found out how he liked using a telephoto lens to videotape and photograph young girls and women at area parks and even in his own neighborhood. The police say that Powell photographed his neighbors two little girls through his bedroom window even..

They have found thousands of disturbing images which include some of Susan after they confiscated Powell’s home computer in the search of his home.

Chuck Cox, Susan’s father told the police that although his daughter never gave him any details but she never wanted her children at her father-in-law’s home. He said she made it clear how uncomfortable it made her.

Steven Powell has been arrested and charged with voyeurism and child pornography and the two children have been removed from the home and put with strangers until there is a hearing for custody on Wednesday. Susan’s parents are trying to get custody of the children. A judge says even if Steven manages to get out of jail on bond he is not allowed to be with the boys.

Meanwhile the search goes on for the young mother in the deserts in Utah around Topaz Mountain. During the search investigators located about 100 pieces of charred wood that was taken from what they claim to be like a shallow grave that had been disturbed. A Salt Lake City forensics expert has a lot to say about the charred wood found.

“If the wood is only partially burned, for instance—or didn’t burn that long and wasn’t that hot – and it was in direct contact with biological materials, then it is possible to get a DNA profile from that,” said Tim Kupferschmid said, who is the executive director of Sorenson Forensics. He said there is a concern about how much of the DNA has degraded but it will not result in misidentification.

“No chance in the process does the DNA degrade and turn into someone else’s DNA,” he said. “It’s either going to be a match or you’re going to get no results or inconclusive results.”

The police say that Josh Powell has been named as a person of interest in this case, but no arrests have been made. Personally I think they should look at not only Josh but his father too. Steven Powell apparently had an obsession with his daughter-in-law that was definitely out of the ordinary. This is only my opinion of course but perhaps he is involved in this too.

As much as I would love for Susan Powell to be found alive and well somewhere, I seriously doubt she will be at this point. I do hope one way or another that she is found so this family can move forward. I pray for Susan’s two son’s Charlie who is 6 now and Braden, who is 4 now. Being placed into a foster home has to be hard on them. I am sure they don’t understand what is happening and I think they have been through enough. Having the family fighting over them must have been very emotional for them both. I pray that they will be able to lead a normal life once this is all over. Please God watch over these two little boys.

If steve is guilty in Susan's disappearance (I think that is a very tiny if), I would not be surprised if he took and kept incriminating photos. I hope LE will look in every possible hiding place he might have.

The husband of Susan Cox Powell went before a judge here Tuesday morning to explain why he should retain custody of the couple’s 4 and 6-year-old sons.

The hearing in Pierce County Superior Court, originally scheduled for Wednesday, began at 9 a.m. PST and is ongoing.

The boys were taken into state custody last week following the voyeurism and child pornography arrest of their grandfather, Steve Powell. The children had been living in Steve Powell’s home with their father, Josh Powell, since last year.

Police have said they are still investigating who else may have seen or known about Steve Powell’s activities. Representing himself before Judge Katherine J. Nelson, Josh Powell said Tuesday he had no knowledge of any wrongdoing on his father’s part, nor did any of his siblings who live in Steve Powell’s home.

Attorney Stephan Downing made arguments Tuesday on behalf of Susan Powell’s parents, Chuck and Judy Cox. The Coxes are seeking custody of their grandsons and are publicly accusing their son-in-law of having a role in their daughter’s disappearance or death.

Downing argued in court that Josh Powell "has never done one thing to look for Susan. My clients have never stopped looking for Susan."

Josh Powell countered that his wife disappeared on her own.

"I did not harm her. I did not have anything to do with her disappearance," he said.

Josh Powell also told the judge his oldest son cried and asked him when he could come home during a supervised Monday visit.

The husband of a missing Utah woman is the subject of a voyeurism and pornography investigation and may have had some involvement in his father's child pornography case, a Washington state prosecutor said in court Tuesday.

Josh Powell denied any knowledge of or involvement in the case of his father, Steven Powell, who is in jail after police arrested him last Thursday. He is accused of possessing hundreds of sexual images of women and girls taken without their knowledge.
The new information came up as Josh Powell and his in-laws, Chuck and Judy Cox, appeared in Pierce County family court in a custody battle for Susan Powell's two young sons. The state granted temporary custody of the two boys to Chuck and Judy Cox.

I too am so relieved those boys are out of the Powell's grasp and with the Cox's. Hopefully there hasn't been anything done to them psychologically that will be impossible to un-do.

Josh Powell Investigated on Child Porn Charges

The children of missing Utah mom Susan Cox Powell were placed in the custody of her parents today after a state attorney said that their father, Josh Powell, is being investigated on the same voyeurism and child porn charges that his father was arrested on last week.
The two boys had been living with Josh and his father, Steve Powell, since Susan’s disappearance in 2009. But when a police search of the Powell’s Puyallup, Wash., home allegedly turned up thousands of images of naked women and young girls taken without their knowledge, Steve Powell was arrested and the children were placed in protective custody.

An attorney for Child Protective Services told the court today that Josh Powell, too, is being investigated on the charges, though he could not divulge any further information, according to ABC affiliate KOMO-TV in Seattle.

Josh Powell told the court he never saw any pornography at the house in Puyallup, and that there was no “clear and present danger” to his children, KOMO reported. He also said that he would be moving out of his father’s home and that the family would not post bail for Steve Powell.

Josh Powell is the only named person of interest in his wife’s disappearance, and the Cox’s attorney told the courtroom today that his clients believe he is solely responsible for their daughter’s disappearance.
Josh Powell denies any involvement in whatever happened to his wife.

“I did not harm her, I did not have anything to do with her disappearance,” Josh said at today’s court hearing. “I love my wife. I have looked for her in my own private way.”

Assistant Attorney General John Long made the surprise allegations during a Tuesday custody hearing where Josh Powell told the judge handing his two young sons over to their grandparents would cause "irreparable harm" to the boys.

Long also said investigators are reviewing 15 computers taken from Powell's home on Aug. 25. Powell denied the accusations, saying he didn't know anything about the videos and photos.

Detective Ed Troyer, with the Pierce County Sheriff's Office, confirms that Josh has not been ruled out.

"The only people that we've exonerated 100 percent are the two children that were in that house. Other than that, we have 90 percent of the material to still go through. We're going to need to go through that and determine if anyone else is involved," Troyer said.

Josh Powell told the judge handing his two young sons over to their grandparents would cause "irreparable harm" to the boys.

I think these 2 boys have already suffered "irreparable harm" by losing their mother and living with a perv, a possible perv, and a murderer.

I fear the same thing, wrap. They are young, but old enough to remember and be affected by the words and actions of those around them. I think it will be a tough road ahead for them. I know the Cox family will do everything in their power to help and support the boys. Love is a strong medicine.

Josh Powell Now Subject of Child-Porn Investigation

Following last week's arrest of Steven Powell – the father-in-law of missing Utah woman Susan Powell – on child-porn possession and voyeurism charges, Steven's son and Susan's husband, Josh Powell, is also the subject of a child-porn investigation, according to Washington state assistant attorney general John Long.

Josh and his two sons had been living in Steven's house. The accusation about the child porn drew an immediate denial from Josh. "I have had nothing to do with any kind of illegal pornography," he said in a court hearing Tuesday.

Steven, 61, was arrested in his Puyallup, Wash., home and booked on suspicion of 14 counts of voyeurism and one count of possessing depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Some of the subjects in the images were videotaped without their knowledge and were as young as 8 and 10, said prosecutor Mark Lindquist.

Steven Powell has pleaded not guilty.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer told Tacoma's News Tribune that everyone in Steven Powell's house is a person of interest. "We have not eliminated anybody and we are not at the point of arresting anybody else," Troyer said.

Sons with Maternal Grandparents
Following Steven's arrest, the state Children's Administration removed Susan and Josh's 4- and 6-year-old sons from his home. The boys have been placed in the home of Susan's parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, until further court notice, said Sherry Hill, a spokeswoman for the Children's Administration,reports Fox News.

"The Cox family has had a very good and very strong relationship with these children," Chuck Cox's attorney, Steve Downing, said Tuesday afternoon. "They had a joyous reunion and that's all I can say."

According to Fox, the attorney also told Judge Kathryn Nelson that the children were at risk because they had never received counseling about their mother's 2009 disappearance, they possibly were exposed to their grandfather's alleged inappropriate videos, and they had been estranged from their maternal grandparents without explanation.

"Those kids may know something, and he sure as the dickens doesn't want them talking to anybody," Downing told the court, reports the Associated Press.

Josh Powell insisted he's a good, loving father, no harm was coming to his kids, and there has been no exposure to any pornography. He also stated that his family would not be posting the $200,000 bail for his father, and should Steven Powell return home, Josh and his sons would check into a hotel.

"There is no clear and present danger to my sons," he said.

Josh Powell initially told investigators he last saw his wife the night of Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at their then-home in West Valley City, Utah, southwest of Salt Lake City, when he took their sons for an overnight camping trip. He has since refused to talk to authorities, and has suggested his wife ran off with another man.

The second day of a custody hearing over the sons of missing Utah mother Susan Cox Powell began Wednesday morning but has stalled over media access issues.

Pierce County Superior Court Judge Kathryn J. Nelson at 11:30 a.m. MST took a recess to consider a television station’s request to live stream the hearing over the internet.

Attorneys representing Child Protective Services (CPS) temporarily placed the boys, ages 6 and 4, with Susan Powell’s parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, on Tuesday. Wearing a purple shirt — a color that has come to symbolize the search for the missing woman — the sister-in-law of Susan Powell said during the recess she visited with the boys Tuesday night at the Coxes’ Puyallup home.

They read stories and played games, said Jennifer Graves, who traveled to Washington from her Utah home.

"The boys really warmed up to us quickly," Graves said. "They were really happy to see us."

Chuck Cox spoke briefly to The Salt Lake Tribune about the boys, saying "They are with us and they’re doing fine."

Graves said allegations by her estranged brother, Josh Powell, that his sons don’t know their grandparents or other relatives is "ridiculous."

"They were "over at our house almost weekly," she said. "The idea they don’t know us is silly."

Discussing sex with kids, porn part of Steve Powell's divorce

The father-in-law of a missing Utah woman was once accused of inappropriately discussing sex with children and keeping pornography in his home against the wishes of his wife, according to court documents.

A 1992 divorce case reviewed by The Associated Press shows Steve Powell's ex-wife accusing him of damaging his children's respect for marriage. Powell was charged this month with child pornography and voyeurism after authorities investigating the disappearance of Susan Powell searched his home him Puyallup.

Susan Powell's husband, Josh, has been named a person of interest in the case, and he was recently living with Steve Powell.

In the court documents, Terri Powell wrote that Steve Powell talked of teaching his children about birth control methods when they were as young as 9 years old. Terri's sister, Becky Mulcahy, wrote in the documents that Steve Powell told her that he had shown his youngest children books about sexual intercourse when they were 6 and 8 years old.

Terri Powell said her husband viewed people as animals and that they should be able to have sex with anyone at any time. She recalled a conversation in which Josh referred to a girl his brother, Johnny, liked. "All she is good for is her body, right Dad?" Terri recalled Josh saying.

"Yeah, that's right," Steve Powell replied, according to the declaration.

Terri Powell also said Steve Powell kept hardcore pornography in the home and that he visited pornography shops.

Jennifer Graves, Josh Powell's sister, said in an interview with The Associated Press that she broke off ties with her father in part because of his problems with sex and pornography. She recalled going on a business trip with her father when she was about 11 years old and that he viewed a pornographic video while she was with him.

"Looking back, I wonder if he was willing to do that with a 10-12 year girl - his daughter- in the room, what else would he be willing to do?" she said.

Steve Powell has pleaded not guilty to 14 charges of voyeurism and one of possession of child pornography. He remains jailed on $200,000 bail. Prosecutors said that for at least a decade, he had been secretly filming women, including Susan Powell, and that he shot footage of two young neighbor girls as they took baths and sat on the toilet.

Susan Powell's family is now seeking custody of her children, a request Child Protective Services has temporarily granted. A Tacoma judge spent Wednesday morning considering whether to allow cameras in the courtroom for the custody dispute and plans to revisit the case issues in the afternoon.

The estranged sister of Josh Powell said Wednesday that she believes her brother is responsible for Susan Powell's disappearance, and she is glad the couple's children are no longer in Josh's care.

"They were really happy to see us," Jennifer Graves said of the two young boys. "It was so fun. We read stories, we played some games, they warmed right up to us."

Graves was at Pierce County Superior Court on Wednesday where a judge ruled that it was not safe for the kids to be returned to Josh Powell.

Child Protective Services granted temporary custody to Susan's parents following the arrest of Josh's father, Steven Powell, but Josh had been fighting to keep the children.

Steven is facing charges of child pornography and voyeurism, and in court on Tuesday a state attorney said Josh Powell was also a subject of the investigation.

Josh vigorously denied the allegations and said he never saw any pornography at the house he shared with his father in Puyallup. But his sister said she doesn't want to see the children back in his home.

"I think he's responsible for his wife's disappearance," Graves said. "More than ever, I'm convinced that (the boys) shouldn't be with Josh, and they certainly never should have been with my dad."

Police have named Josh Powell as a person of interest in Susan Powell's disappearance, but he has never been arrested or charged.

Graves said she hopes the children might be able to help find Susan, who disappeared in December 2009.

"I think if there is something there maybe the boys could shed some light on it if we get them before some psychologist and things," she said.

Josh Powell said he last saw his wife before he left with their two boys, then ages 2 and 4, to go on a midnight camping trip in freezing temperatures on the Pony Express Trail, about 80 miles west of Salt Lake City.

Police spent days searching for Susan in the desert in Utah and Nevada, but she still has not been found.

In court, Josh Powell insisted he was not involved in his wife's disappearance.

"I did not kill my wife as has been alleged," he said. "I love my wife. I want my wife back."

Graves said she's worried that her brother might also be involved in the pornography case that has already led to her father's arrest.

"I don't know how you could be in that house and not know about some degree of it," she said.

Prosecutors said that for at least a decade, Steven Powell had been secretly filming women, including Susan Powell, and that he shot footage of two young neighbor girls as they took baths and sat on the toilet.

Court documents showed that pornography was also a major factor in Steven Powell's 1992 divorce.

"I've known my dad's character for a long time. That's why we chose to stay away from him," Graves said. "We chose our children not to have a personal relationship with him. We made that decision a long time ago and, let me tell you, we're really really grateful that we did."

At the custody hearing on Wednesday afternoon, Josh Powell said the children were in no danger in his care. But Judge Kathryn Nelson ruled that the children cannot be safely returned to him at this time.

The images, taken from 15 computers confiscated from the home in August, were available to everyone living in the home, Long argued. Josh Powell and his sons have been living with Steve Powell since last year.

Long also said Josh Powell admitted to CPS workers that he has taken photos of people’s legs without knowledge and that some of his father’s information may be on his computer.

Josh Powell countered in court that he did not go through his father’s personal belongings and also said his career as a software developer has no link at all to his father’s crimes. Most of the 15 computers were old and in disuse, he said.

Powell said CPS asked him if he ever took any photos, and he acknowledged taking landscape photos and photos of his sons. In public places, Josh Powell said he stays far away enough to avoid capturing people’ faces and has never taken shots of body parts.

Josh Powell also reiterated what he told the judge Tuesday: that he had no knowledge of his father’s activities, that he wants his wife back, and that he had nothing to do with her December 2009 disappearance from their West Valley City home.

"I love my wife, I know my wife loves my children," he said. "I want my wife back as much as anyone else wants her back."

Josh Powell on Tuesday told the judge he is willing to move out of his father’s home if Steve Powell posts bail, set at $200,000.

A judge declined to allow Josh Powell to have custody of his two sons Wednesday and is hearing arguments about whether to allow them to live with their grandparents or remain in foster care.

Judge Kathryn Nelson said the children could not be safely returned to their home with their father, who prosecutors say is a subject in a voyeurism and pornography investigation.

Josh Powell argued that the boys, ages 4 and 6, should remain in foster care rather than live with his in-laws, Chuck and Judy Cox.

John Long, who is representing the Washington state Children's Administration, made additional arguments Wednesday about why the children should not be living in the home with Josh and Steven Powell. He said Josh's mentally disabled brother has answered the door in the nude in the past and is often nude inside the home.

Long also told the judge that Josh Powell has admitted that he takes photos of people's legs in public without their knowledge.

But Josh Powell denied both allegations and argued there was no reason for anyone to believe his sons would be at risk in his home.

"My brother is a decent, modest person," he said. "My sons are safe, they have everything they need. They have all of their needs met."

In arguing that the children should be removed from Josh Powell's custody, the state cited the child pornography found on Steven Powell's computer during the Aug. 25 search of the home and the fact that Susan Powell remains missing.

The state also cited the condition of the home on Sept. 22 when Steven Powell was arrested. When they made the arrest, police found one of Josh Powell's brothers, who is developmentally disabled, naked. The state also said a hangman's noose was found, as well as a poster on the wall with a sexually violent image of a woman with a sword.
Josh Powell responded that the hangman's noose was a rope used for weightlifting. And he said he did not believe there was a sexually violent poster in the house. He said the brother who was naked during the arrest had just gotten out of the shower and the family had not been able to attend to him as they were were caught off guard by the raid.

Police said the boys were not involved in the child pornography.

How do they know this? I thought they had only viewed 5 or 10% of the porn that was found.
