There may be a new investigator and team working with Billie Dunn on the Hailey Dunn case. According to the former investigator, Mac Sanford announced his withdrawal from the Hailey Dunn case today. Sanford became involved with the case for only about a month. We spoke with him Thursday to get more information and he directed us to call Hailey's mother, Billie Dunn.
Billie Dunn says they do not have a private investigator. Hailey went missing in December of 2010 in her hometown of Colorado City.

"Hope for Hailey" volunteers announced the vigil on Facebook and at least several people have already indicated that they would be attending.

The vigil will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday December 22, at Ruddick Park in Colorado City. It will be at the pavillion closest to the city pool.

The event is open to anyone who wishes to attend and people are invited to bring an ornament for the tree.

These missing cases like HaLeigh Cummings and Hailey Dunn are really getting to me because IMHO, both cases involve the parents and the good ole boy Sheriff's Office.

COLORADO CITY — The message Monte Wike had for group assembled at dusk Saturday afternoon for a candlelight vigil for missing teenager Hailey Dunn was in keeping with the holiday season.

"The greatest gift we can pass on is love," said Wike, the pastor of First Christian Church in Colorado City. "And that 's what this group does. Bless all that are in this search."

About 30 people met at the Ruddick Park pavilion to express their determination to continue the search for Hailey, who was 13 when she was last seen Dec. 27, 2010. They lit candles and hung purple ornaments on a 5-foot Christmas tree in honor of the missing girl. Many in attendance wore T-shirts with Hailey's picture and the words "Hope For Hailey" on the back.

Hope is what the group intends to hang onto.

"That's all you can do," said Mayor Carol Sue Dakan, who promised whatever help the city could give.

"The city is completely behind Billie (Hailey's mother, Billie Jean Dunn)," Dakan said. "We'll do whatever we can."

Billie Jean Dunn, who now lives in Austin, was at the vigil and spoke briefly to thank the crowd for showing up and remembering her daughter. Hailey's father, Clint Dunn, also was there but didn't speak.

Most people at the vigil were family and close friends of Hailey's, said event organizer Stacie Campbell, although some, like Campbell, had never met her.

"I can't wait to meet the child," said Campbell shortly before the vigil ended. "I want to hear that laugh I've heard so much about."

The actual anniversary of Hailey's disappearance will be marked by a "walk of faith" at 3:15 p.m. Thursday. People wearing pink flip flops, as Hailey did, will walk from the house where she lived to her father's house and then to her friend's house, where tracking dogs lost her scent. Holly Jenkins, who helped search for Hailey, said the walk takes about 20 minutes.

"Anybody can walk with us," she said. "And, then we go home and, of course, she (Hailey) doesn't."

Jenkins said the walk will be held each year "until we know something. She deserves for us to hope for the best."

Campbell made a bold prediction for Aug. 24 next year, Hailey's birthday.

"We'll have her for her 16th birthday party," she said. "I know she doesn't like pink, but a sweet 16 party for a girl has to be pink."

Campbell's optimism was not out of place Saturday as many spoke about the hope they have of finding Hailey, even after two years.

"You can't give up," said Wike. "When you give up hope, it's over."

"Hailey missing just short of two years is unthinkable. We never thought it could happen," said Stacie Campbell, the vigil organizer.

Thursday December 27th marks two years since the now 15-year-old Hailey Dunn went missing outside her Colorado City home. Friends, family, and supporters gathered at a vigil earlier this week to remember the day.

"We'll have her back for her 16th birthday," said one supporter.

"We're all here for the same thing," said Holly Jenkins, who helped search for Hailey. "We all just want Hailey home."

Hailey's mom Billie Dunn said this vigil is a chance to renew hope in finding Hailey.

"Just the hope factor, having hope that she'll come home. That way they're still out there looking for her and everybody needs to cling to that," said Dunn.

A letter from an inmate back in October of this year gave police a new angle to investigate, but so far no arrests have been made in connection with her disappearance. Still, her family and friends keep the hope alive.

"I think it's important for everybody to continue with the hope," said Dunn.

"I know that I have to stay strong and have hope," said Hailey's best friend Heather Ruth.

For Billie Jean Dunn, Thursday was an excruciatingly painful day because it marked two years since her daughter Hailey Dunn went missing. Billie Jean Dunn reported her daughter missing two years ago today.
“I broke down all day long,” the mother of the teen said of how she spent Thursday, recalling the day her daughter went missing. “It doesn’t get any easier. It has been worse lately especially because of the holidays.”

On December 28, 2010, just three days after Christmas, Hailey Darlene Dunn, 13, was reported missing by her mother. Shawn Adkins, Billie Jean Dunn’s then live-in boyfriend at the time, was the last person to see Hailey alive. He has been named the prime suspect in the case, but as yet, no arrests have been made.

In the two years since her disappearance, investigators from Colorado City, Mitchell County, the Texas Rangers, the Department of Public Safety and the FBI have followed countless leads but to no avail. And now, the FBI is officially the lead investigating agency in the case.

“We are still coordinating with Colorado City P.D., the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Rangers,” said Katie Chaumont, the spokesperson for the FBI. “This is an ongoing investigation but we are still working closely with local law enforcement.”

Ever hopeful, supporters, family and friends gathered at Ruddick Park in Colorado City last Saturday for one of many vigil’s that have been held to mark the time that has passed since the teen vanished.

“The vigil went better than I expected,” Billie Dunn said from her home in Travis County Thursday.

But she said she is tired of planning vigils — it is just too painful.

“It’s been two years of vigils,” Billie Jean Dunn said. “Every time we hope she’ll be home for a party and it never happens. I have to plan vigils instead of parties for my daughter.”

The case
Hailey Dunn was first listed as a runaway, but on Jan. 3, 2011, a task force including FBI investigators, local, area and state law enforcement took on the investigation.

According to affidavits from Mitchell County, Hailey was last seen by Adkins on Dec. 27, when he said she went to spend the night with a friend. But the friend’s family would tell police that Hailey never showed up there that night, affidavits state.

Investigators looked at family members first and both Billie Jean Dunn and Adkins would flunk a polygraph. Investigators cleared Hailey Dunn’s biological father Clint Dunn almost immediately after she was reported missing.

Early on, Billie Jean Dunn asked Adkins to move out of their home after he flunked a polygraph test. Police later confiscated a computer from Adkins’ mother’s home, which was found to contain almost 109,000 images of child porn, bestiality and deviant acts. Billie Jean Dunn and Adkins reunited briefly, but separated again in 2011, this time for good. (No charges were ever filed on Adkins for the images found on the computer.)Briefly????? I think NOT!

David Dunn, Hailey's brother who was 16 at the time, told investigators he returned home at about 4 p.m. on Dec. 27 and pounded on the door for about five minutes. Upon entering the residence through the window, David Dunn observed Adkins "standing in the hallway with a deer in the headlights look," according to the affidavits.

Adkins never gave any statements to any member of the media except the Associated Press, when he denied any involvement with Hailey’s disappearance.

New leads
Investigators, searchers and the media have followed every possible development in the case, including the more than 70 alleged sightings of the teen.

In March, investigators converged on a site near the Big Spring airport where human remains were found. The remains were determined to have been those of a man.

In late October, authorities confirmed a letter sent by federal prisoner to her sister in Abilene, which claimed that she witnessed a 15-year-old teenager from Colorado City being drugged in a mobile home somewhere in Odessa in January of 2011. The letter did not mention Hailey Dunn by name, but said the teen died of a drug overdose. The letter said the girl’s body was buried somewhere in West Texas.

Billie Jean Dunn said she was blindsided by the Abilene television reporter who presented and read the letter to her in person. Billie Jean Dunn said she had no idea the letter indicated her daughter had been kidnapped, killed and buried somewhere in West Texas.

“I didn’t want to hear it,” she said, at the time, adding that the reporter knew that Billie Jean Dunn and the private investigator working on the case “were still believing she was alive.”

Upon hearing about the letter, Billie Jean Dunn went straight to FBI investigators, who she said have conducted interviews with nine or 10 people in connection to the letter.

“The FBI in Abilene said there was no credibility in the letter,” she said, adding that this restored her hope that her daughter would be found alive. “They assured me they went over this with a fine tooth comb.”

Earlier in October, Billie Jean Dunn announced that she had hired Houston-based private investigator Mac Sanford to help with the case after there were reported sightings of the teen. But she has since cut ties with Sanford.

Billie Jean Dunn said Adkins is among those the FBI continues to investigate.

“They are not able to clear Shawn (Adkins),” she said. “But there are others they are looking at, too.”

Having Hope for Hailey
While family and friends close to the case try to remain hopeful, with the passage of time, it becomes more difficult.

Billie Jean Dunn has placed her faith in the FBI investigator who has contacted her numerous times and even attended the vigil last Saturday. FBI officials would not identify the agent due to the on-going investigation.

“He said he’s here until she’s home,” Billie Jean Dunn said Thursday.

Sweetwater attorney John Young who has been retained by the family, applauded the work of the FBI agent in the case.

“The assigned agent has specialized training in missing children cases — we are pleased by the decision of the FBI,” Young said.

While her hope wanes, Billie Jean Dunn said no matter what, the family wants closure.

“Somebody knows something and possibly they are a parent, too,” she said. “I am going to beg parent to parent. No matter what the outcome is, my family needs to know — we need closure. “

I received a Certified letter notice before Christmas, and picked it up today. It was a refund of money I had sent to the Hailey Dunn reward fund.
It was a Cashiers Check, signed by the Mayor of Colorado City. It was accompanied by a letter, dated 12/20/2012:

"At this time the City of Colorado City is dissolving the Hailey Dunn Reward Fund Account. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has
been designated as the lead agency in this investigation. All reward funds are being returned to the original donors.

The Search for Hailey Dunn Continues

Will Hailey Dunn ever be found? It's been since 2010, but a small pizza shop in Krum, Texas is holding onto hope while spreading awareness of the missing teen. Bobcat Planet Pizza is pasting her face with the words "Hope for Hailey" on their pizza boxes in hopes of getting more attention to her mysterious case.

Krum is located approximately 40 miles north of Dallas and about four hours east of Colorado City—where Hailey Dunn vanished in 2010. She'd be going on 16-years-old later this year, but she isn't likely alive as investigators have reportedly stated that they believe she is deceased. Meanwhile no arrests have been made, like ever, in her case and the most suspicious characters in her disappearance are living out their lives while she remains missing.

There is some hope that these pizza box flyers will help in spreading awareness of Hailey's disappearance, but a real breakthrough in the investigation is what's truly needed. Unfortunately that may never come until the discovery of the missing teen and it probably won't be a pleasant day.

A body was discovered Saturday afternoon in Scurry County, according to DPS officials.

Someone found the body in an area southwest of Snyder and reported it to the Scurry County Sheriff's Office, who then contacted the Texas Rangers and the Texas Dept. of Public Safety, said Trooper Sparky Dean of DPS.

Law enforcement personnel from all three agencies have been at the location attempting to recover the body since Saturday afternoon and were back at what they are treating as a crime scene on Sunday.

The body appears to have been there a while, judging from how much it has decomposed, and authorities have not been able to yet determine age or gender, Dean said.

After it is recovered, the body will be sent to the Medical Examiner's office in either Lubbock or Ft. Worth.

SCURRY COUNTY, Texas -
The FBI has joined the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers in a criminal investigation involving a body found Saturday in Scurry County.

“Authorities are back on scene today, searching for additional remains and any clues that may have been left behind,” DPS spokesman Sparky Dean said in an email. “This is being treated as a crime scene, so it is slow going.”

The body was found Saturday afternoon at or near Lake JB Thomas. The reservoir is off County Road 3236 and Farm to Market 1298. Scurry County Sheriff's Deputies had the entrance blocked off for hours on Sunday. However, authority vehicles drove in and out of Lake JB Thomas.

The age or gender has not been released.

According to officials, the body hasn't been sent for an autopsy and a decision on whether to send it to Lubbock or Dallas-Fort Worth had not been made.

An SUV from the 32nd Judicial District Attorney could be seen at the scene Sunday. The 32nd District represents Nolan, Fisher, and Mitchell counties.

Although officials are being tight-lipped, Hailey Dunn – a teen who has been missing since Dec. 27, 2010 – was from Colorado City (Mitchell County).

She was 13 at the time she disappeared.

Snyder - The family of Hailey Dunn are on their way to Snyder this afternoon.

Spokespeople for Hope for Hailey tell CBS 7 that the family will be in town by tonight.

They offered a statement saying, "We ask everyone to come together and pray for the family of whoever this body belongs. We are praying that it is not our Hailey. We appreciate the outpouring of kindness and prayers over the past two years."

Investigators from local and state law enforcement are still processing a crime scene where a body was found in Scurry County over the weekend.

DPS officials tell CBS 7 the body is decomposed to the point that they cannot determine an age or gender of the remains.

The body will be sent off to either Lubbock or Ft. Worth for an autopsy.

DPS officials say it could take anywhere from a few days to several weeks before an identity is released.

Have had too many incident w/HaLeigh where we all thought she had been found (dead) for me to personally get too excited about this. Also, we went through this last year in this case IIRC.MOO.

Help Find Hailey Dunn
According to KTAB: "Law officers are currently searching the area for skeletal remains that had been scattered by wildlife." Once all of the remains have been gathered, they will then be sent to either the Lubbock or Ft Worth medical examiner for age, gender and possible identity.

Please continue to keep Hailey's family and the families of other missing persons in your prayers. This will more than likely be a lengthy process and all involved in waiting for results will need prayers of strength, comfort and patience.

Investigators say they aren’t sure if human remains found Saturday afternoon among the cacti, mesquite trees and brush of a Scurry County field are from a man or woman, a youth or an elderly person.

Texas Department of Public Safety Senior Trooper Sparky Dean said Monday afternoon the Texas Rangers, Scurry County Sheriff’s Department and FBI are investigating the found remains, scouring the area for any other evidence that could give clues as to who the person was and how the body ended up in the field south of Snyder.

Investigators are treating the area as a crime scene, though it’s not clear if a crime occurred, and are conducting a thorough search of the area that could last several more days, he said.

“We want to do this right,” he said.

Dean said investigators have little to work with other than the remains, which will be sent to a crime lab for an autopsy eventually.

“Decomposition has occurred — there is no flesh on the bones from what I’ve been told,” Dean said.

But it’s too soon to tell how long the remains were in the field, Dean said, adding authorities are unsure if further examination will take place in Lubbock or Ft. Worth.

FBI spokeswoman Katherine Chaumont said an FBI evidence response team from Dallas has been in Scurry County since Sunday, collecting and processing evidence.

Both Chaumont and a spokesperson for the Scurry County Sheriff’s Department referred all questions about the investigation to Dean.

Dean declined to pinpoint the location where the body was found, but said it was well off the beaten path and out of cellphone range.

A person reported finding the remains in the area about 1:10 p.m. Saturday, Dean said.

When asked if there have been any reports of missing people in the Scurry County area that might be related, Dean said he didn’t have any reports pointing to that.

Several law enforcement agencies converged on a location near Lake J.B. Thomas Monday after human remains were found there Saturday afternoon, officials from the Department of Public Safety reported.
Human bones were found at a location south of Snyder near Lake J.B. Thomas, Senior Trooper Sparky Dean reported Monday.
Investigators said they have not identified the remains at this time. But speculation has already begun about whether the remains are those of missing Colorado City teen Hailey Dunn.
Billie Jean Dunn, the mother of the missing teen, was in contact with investigators following the discovery of the bones.
Dunn reported her 13-year-old daughter missing Dec. 28, 2010, from the family’s home in Colorado City. Since then, there has been very little evidence uncovered involving her disappearance. Shawn Adkins, the then live-in boyfriend of Billie Jean Dunn, is the only person identified as a suspect by Colorado City police. No arrests have been made in the case.
The remains were found near the lake about 22 miles west of the community of Dunn, where Adkins lived with his grandmother following the teen’s disappearance.
Dean did not know what types of bones had been discovered. However, Billie Jean Dunn said via text message investigators said that “as soon as they can compare dental records they (investigators) will let me know.”
An FBI evidence-response team has been at the scene of where the remains were found since Sunday and remained through Monday, Katie Chaumont said, the FBI public affairs specialist out of the Dallas division.
The Texas Rangers requested the FBI’s assistance, which is routinely done because of the FBI team’s expertise on processing and collecting evidence, Chaumont said. The team was expected to leave Snyder by Monday evening.
When asked if the FBI agents were on scene because of the possibility it could be Hailey Dunn, Chaumont could not speculate and referred to the local law enforcement. She did say that the evidence-response teams are called at the assistance of local law enforcement.
The bones were found by an individual who immediately contacted the Scurry County Sheriff’s Office, Dean said. Scurry County investigators enlisted the assistance of the Texas Rangers and the DPS.
Because of the extreme decomposition, investigators have been unable to determine the gender and age of the bones, including whether the remains are that of an adult or child. Billie Jean Dunn said investigators did not tell her whether clothing was found near the remains.
Dean said the remains will be sent to a medical examiner either in Lubbock or Tarrant County.
“We are treating this as a crime scene,” Dean said. “We want to make sure that we preserve any evidence that may have been left behind.”
An expert in identifying human remains, Dr. Roger Metcalf, who works in the Human Identification Laboratory in Tarrant County, said that with skeletal remains there’s no way to tell how long it might take to identify a person. And it’s possible that the skeletal remains might never be identified, he said. Metcalf was speaking generally and not specifically about the remains found in Scurry County near Snyder.
The probability of identifying a person with just a skeleton is elevated if they’re part of the DNA database, or if they can be linked through their dental records with the person’s dentist, through X-rays or other internal tracking signs such as the serial number on a hip replacement, he said.
Hailey Dunn’s mother Billie Jean Dunn said that she submitted DNA to law enforcement following her daughter’s disappearance. DNA from Hailey’s grandparents and her biological father, Clint Dunn, was also submitted, Billie Jean Dunn said.
“Encourage your readers that if someone goes missing to get DNA submitted … it’s the best shot,” Metcalf said. “With skeletal remains it’s really hard to get an estimate. It could be a day or two, and some don’t ever get (identified).”
Almost one year ago to the day, on March 20, 2012, police in Big Spring found human remains near the McMahon Wrinkle Airport. FBI, Texas Rangers seek to identify body in Scurry County
Investigators say human remains in advanced state of decomposition

Investigators have raised more questions than given answers about human remains found in Scurry County in the vicinity of the J.B. Thomas Reservoir.

Authorities will say the decomposed body was found Saturday, March 16, among the cacti, mesquite trees and brush of a Scurry County field. A person reported finding the remains in the area about 1:10 p.m. Saturday.

But they won’t say if the remains are those of a man or woman, or about what age.

Texas Rangers, Scurry County Sheriff’s deputies and agents from the FBI have joined forces on this case.

Authorities continue to scour the area for other evidence and clues as to who the person was and how the body ended up in the field south of Snyder, about 80 miles from Lubbock, said Sparky Dean, a senior trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The search in that area could last several days. It’s unclear if a crime occurred, but investigators are treating the area as a crime scene, he said.

“We want to do this right,” he said.

Investigators have little to work with other than the remains, which will be sent eventually to a crime lab for an autopsy, Dean said.

“Decomposition has occurred — there is no flesh on the bones from what I’ve been told,” he said.

Authorities are uncertain if further examination will take place in Lubbock or Ft. Worth. It’s too soon to tell how long the remains were in the field, Dean said.

FBI spokeswoman Katherine Chaumont said an FBI evidence response team from Dallas has been in Scurry County since Sunday, March 17, collecting and processing evidence.

Both Chaumont and a spokesperson for the Scurry County Sheriff’s Department referred all questions about the investigation to Dean.

Dean declined to pinpoint the location where the body was found, but said it was well off the beaten path and out of cellphone range.

Dean said investigators at the scene were “quick to point out (the body) doesn’t have anything to do with the lake.”

The reservoir is at 1 percent capacity but investigators do not believe remains were close enough for the low water level to reveal the body, he said.
