Cherylz, I can also see why when the children told their parents that he hurt them, they may have dismissed that because a doctor often does when he gives a shot or something.

Beebe responds to
published reports about Bradley

A statement from Beebe Medical Center says the hospital did not turn records over to investigators who were looking into complaints about Dr. Earl Bradley in 2005 because the matter was dropped.

“Beebe Medical Center understands we have a duty to report when we have knowledge of any circumstances that may impact a physician’s ability to practice medicine with reasonable skill and safety. In 2005, we had no knowledge of any issues requiring such reporting,” the Friday, Dec. 8 statement reads.

Bradley is incarcerated in connection with 33 counts of rape and child exploitation, which occurred at his Route 1 office near Lewes.

“The hospital’s oversight of a physician’s clinical practice exists only while the physician is in the hospital. The hospital has no knowledge of and, of course, no jurisdiction over what happens in the physician’s private office,” the statement said.

“Beebe Medical Center received a subpoena from the Delaware Attorney General on April 7, 2005. That subpoena asked for records of complaints and any disciplinary records for Dr. Earl Bradley. The purpose for the subpoena was a non-specific criminal investigation.”

“Upon receiving the subpoena, Beebe immediately responded to the Attorney General’s Office requesting additional information. Before any records were turned over, the matter was dropped. From the time that subpoena was received (April 7, 2005), until we received notification that the investigation was closed (October 5, 2005), we were never told the reason for the investigation. In fact, it wasn’t until this week that we learned the reason for the 2005 investigation in a report published by the News Journal.”

The hospital’s statement continues, saying, “In September 2005, we first heard vague rumors about alleged incidents concerning Dr. Bradley in Pennsylvania. And though we don’t generally operate on such rumors, out of an abundance of caution we felt it prudent to require Dr. Bradley to have a chaperone whenever seeing patients inside the hospital. He was notified of this requirement and readily consented.”

“The chaperone requirement was lifted in October 2005 when Beebe learned that the local investigation was terminated.”

Post by Nama Sat Jan 09, 2010 11:05 am

The Delaware Attorney General’s Office filed a motion in Delaware Superior Court to have former Lewes pediatrician Dr. Earl Bradley tested for the HIV virus.

Bradley is facing over 30 charges of rape and exploitation of young children.

Paula Ryan, chief prosecutor for Sussex County, said the motion was granted without opposition. The request to test is allowed under state law.

“It’s routine in cases involving sexual abuse allegations to have that testing conducted. It’s just one of the steps we take as part of the process to make sure we have all the information we need,” Ryan said.

She said Bradley’s test would be handled through the Department of Corrections, with correctional medical personnel obtaining his sample.

Today’s motion marked Bradley’s first appearance at the Superior Court in Georgetown but figures to not be the last. Bradley is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in the Court of Common Pleas in Georgetown, Thursday, Jan. 14. Department of Justice officials have stated after the preliminary hearing the next step is going to a grand jury for indictment.

Bradley faces possible life in prison if convicted.

Bradley's own sister, who worked for him as an office manager, told police she had complained to two officials with the state medical society, but again, nothing came of it. The society officials deny receiving any complaint from Linda Barnes.

Barnes told police in 2005 that her brother was bipolar and taking medication from the office, and that several parents had complained to her about Bradley inappropriately touching patients.

Every single evil thing that everyone does now is blamed on being bi polar. Why can't people just admit they screwed up? The whole world cannot be bi polar and use it as an excuse to commit murder and mayhem.

Yes, Critter, it has become a popular excuse for every evil thing the evil do, just like you say. Another one I am tired of hearing about is hormonal imbalances. There is such a thing as self-control no matter what is wrong with someone. The only ones who don't have self-control are the stark-raving-mad-insane and even insanity is now being used as an excuse. It is maddening, isn't it?

PS---Isn't bipolar the trendy word for the manic depressive of yesteryear?---Anyone know?

Wouldn't Bradley have to get HIV from an adult? OR, be shooting up with dirty needles? I doubt he is HIV positive. Although, at this juncture..nothing would really surprise me.

And Critter, I could not agree with you more. It's all about being bi polar or hormonal or manic. No one has to take responsibility for their actions anymore cause they just can't help it. BS

I want to clarify a little bit. There may be members who are legitimately bipolar or who are treating hormonal imbalances. My comments were not about them and they would only prove the point I made about self-control because they certainly don't go around hurting other people and then using their condition as an excuse. Nothing against those who are afflicted with these conditions, it is only the people who never try to control their actions and then blame it on these conditions that gets my dander up.

Delaware's Criminal Justice Council has approved $145,000 to help potential victims in the case of a Lewes pediatrician accused of raping several patients.

The group meets monthly, but Lt. Gov. Matt Denn, who is chair of the committee, tells The News Journal of Wilmington that a special meeting was called Monday because the issues needed to be dealt with sooner.

Dr. Earl Bradley has been charged with raping nine girls and prosecutors say there may be as many as 100 victims.

The Department of Services for Children, Youth and Their Families, says the money will be used to train trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapists to deal with school-age children and to add a clinician for in-home assessments of children.

It will also be spent on monthly support meetings and serving affected members of Sussex County's Latino community.

Dr. Earl Bradley's name has become "Mudd" in Lewes for charges of rape and exploitation of young children, but nearly 20 years ago, another Dr. Bradley faced similar charges in State College, Pa.

Dr. William Bradley, Earl Bradley's uncle, faced similar circumstances in 1990 but was found not guilty of the most serious charges.

At the time William Bradley was 86 years old. He was accused of a series of charges - indecent exposure, open lewdness, indecent assault and involuntary deviate sexual behavior - which were consolidated for the courts. After a bench trial in the Centre County Court of Common Pleas, Bradley was convicted of three misdemeanor counts of indecent exposure, two counts of indecent assault and three counts of open lewdness, but he was found not guilty on the charges of involuntary deviate sexual behavior.

According to court documents obtained by the Cape Gazette, the first series of charges were for an incident in which Bradley was accused of exposing himself to three minor girls through the leg opening in his shorts as the girls rode their bikes past him. The incident occurred in August 1990 in a children's park area.

The second series of charges was for an incident involving a 4-year-old girl. Bradley was accused of taking the girl into his back yard, exposing himself and asking her to perform oral sex. He was found guilty of indecent exposure and two counts of indecent assault but found not guilty of involuntary deviate sexual behavior and two other counts of indecent assault in that instance.

Finally, Bradley was accused of exposing himself at an agricultural festival in the presence of a young girl. He was convicted of indecent exposure and open lewdness for that.

During his trial, Bradley read a statement in which he claimed his innocence and said he suffered from impotence and a lack of libido. He said he underwent a series of operations to prove his incontinence and impotence to the court. After the charges came to light, Bradley said he was evicted from his home and not allowed by court order to get a motel room or rent a house. He eventually was transferred to the Pine Ridge Nursing Home in Philipsburg, Pa., before moving back to State College.

In his statement, Bradley said he taught at the college level for 22 years, including Penn State University and Montgomery County Community College. He also taught 23 years at the high school level until 1990. Bradley said he had never had a complaint of misconduct filed against him in that time.

After the charges came to light, Bradley isolated himself from the public and said he received 28 anonymous phone calls, had mud thrown at his house and his car windshield broken.

"I feel that I'm being crucified for something I didn't or couldn't do to a child nor did I deliberately or intentionally expose myself," he said.

Bradley was placed on probation and was ordered not to have any contact with minor children. The judge also ordered an evaluation but said prison time was uncalled for.

Attorneys for Bradley attempted to appeal his convictions but his appeals were denied.

Dr. Earl Bradley faces life in prison on over 30 charges. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Georgetown Thursday, Jan. 14.

A Delaware pediatrician accused of sexually abusing possibly more than 100 patients has waived a preliminary court hearing and bond review.

Dr. Earl Bradley is charged with more than 30 felonies, including rape. Authorities have accused Bradley of videotaping attacks on some alleged victims, some of whom were as young as six months old.

Defense attorney Paul Kania says he met with Bradley for more than an hour before appearing before Judge Kenneth Clark on Thursday. Kania told the judge that Bradley was waiving his right to appear in court. Prosecutors said they would turn over a police report to the defense.

Kania told reporters that Bradley is ''very depressed'' and concerned about his family.

Bradley is being held on $2.9 million bond.

Nearly one year after his arrest, the criminal sexual molestation trial of former Tracy plastic surgeon Peter Chi is scheduled to begin Oct. 25, San Joaquin County Superior Court Judge Charlotte Orcutt ruled today.

Dr Earl Bradley found guilty on 14 counts of first-degree rape and five counts each of second-degree assault and sexual exploitation of a child/ Sentenced to 14 Life Terms + 164 Years Without Parole/ Medical office to be DEMOLISHED - Page 3 0204chipeterbookingmug

Chi pleaded not guilty in November to 67 felony counts of alleged sexual abuse of former patients—50 counts of sexual battery by fraud, 16 of sexual penetration by foreign object while unconscious and one count of lewd act upon a child. The alleged victims’ ages range from 15 to 63.

Chi was absent from today’s proceedings at the Stockton courthouse, but Orcutt said Chi must appear in court when the trial begins in October. She said there’s no need for his presence at a scheduled Aug. 9 court date to review any motions filed, or at the Sept. 27 readiness conference.

Chi, a Livermore resident, had a cosmetic surgery practice at Beauty Renewed, 1770 N. Tracy Blvd., before Tracy police arrested him last Feb. Last year, Judge Roger Ross ordered Chi to turn over his medical license and passport to the court. He remains out of jail on $500,000 bail.

A gag order issued by Orcutt last year prevents anyone involved with the case from speaking with the media.

Post by Nama Fri Jan 22, 2010 10:43 am

A civil lawsuit has been filed against Lewes pediatrician Earl Bradley and his former employer, Beebe Medical Center.

The lawsuit accuses Bradley, 56, of sexually abusing a female patient, identified as "M. Doe," twice in December, 2009, according to the court filing. The suit, which also lists Beebe as a defendant, says "Beebe had information and reports of unprofessional conduct which endangered the public by defendant Bradley which were not reported to the Board."

The case was filed this week by Wilmington lawyer Bruce Hudson on behalf of two-unnamed parents in New Castle County Superior Court, Hudson said.

Bradley is accused of sexually assaulting or raping patients at his practice and remains behind bars. The Delaware Attorney General's Office has said there could be up to 100 victims.

Bradley worked as a pediatrician at Beebe from July, 1994 to November, 1997, and had staff privileges at the hospital until 2009, the hospital said.

Wallace Hudson, Beebe's vice president for corporate affairs, said he has not seen the case and could not comment.

Beebe denied knowledge of any alleged wrong-doing by Bradley in a statement released on Jan. 8, 2010.

"In September 2005, we first heard vague rumors about alleged incidents concerning Dr. Bradley in Pennsylvania," the statement said. "Out of an abundance of caution we felt it prudent to require Dr. Bradley to have a chaperone whenever seeing patients inside the hospital," according to the statement. The hospital said the requirement was lifted about a month later when a police investigation ended.

"If any of those knew or had reason to believe or suspect that there was sexual abuse of [a minor] by a doctor, they had a legal duty to report it," said attorney Bruce Hudson.

The lawyer said more parties could be named as defendants if it's determined that any alleged wrong-doing was not properly reported. Hudson said his law firm is currently interviewing other potential clients who could also file suit.

Both parties will have 20 days to respond after receiving the lawsuit.

Bradley's lawyer could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.

The first, but not likely the last, civil lawsuit against Dr. Earl Bradley was filed in New Castle County by the parents of a 2-year-old victim.
Representing the family in the suit are attorneys Bruce Hudson and Ben Castle of the Wilmington firm Young, Conaway, Stargatt and Taylor.
A criminal case against Bradley is ongoing, but Hudson said the suit was filed now due to a concern about the preservation of Bradley’s treatment records. He said Bradley was trying to destroy records during the day and a half between his first arrest Dec. 16 and his re-arrest Dec. 18.
Named as defendants are Bradley and Beebe Medical Center. The plaintiffs are parents L. and D. Doe and child M. Doe. The suit lists four counts against Bradley and Beebe; duty to report to sexual abuse perpetrated by Bradley to the state Board of Medical Practice; failure to report Bradley’s actions to the Division of Child Protective Services; all defendants acted in a reckless manner and are liable for punitive damages; Beebe committed medical negligence in failing to report Bradley to the Board of Medical Practice.
The suit says the child was harmed sexually, mentally and emotionally by the acts of sexual abuse perpetrated by Bradley and permitted by Beebe. It goes on to say the parents were damaged emotionally and mentally by the defendants’ actions. The family is demanding judgment against the defendants, as well as punitive damages.
Hudson said he also filed the suit now because the records and memories of Bradley’s victims are still fresh. He said the case was filed in New Castle County as opposed to Sussex because his firm’s office is there and more judges are available in New Castle.

He said he anticipates more lawsuits coming against Bradley and that the suit could possibly take two years.

Despite accusations of sexual assaults or rape of patients, Dr. Earl Bradley's medical licenses remain active in two states.

Bradley's license was temporarily suspended in Delaware on December 29, 2009, and his inactive medical license in Pennsylvania was temporarily suspended on December 22, 2009. The 56-year=old Lewes pediatrician was arrested by Delaware State Police on December 16 and December 18, 2009, and faces more than two-dozen felony charges.

However, officials in both New Jersey and Florida confirm that Bradley's licenses in those states remain active. In New Jersey, state leaders are aware of accusations against Bradley in Delaware but are still trying to discover if he ever practiced medicine in the state, said Department of Law and Public Safety spokesman Jeff Lamm.

So far, Lamm said officials in New Jersey have yet to find an office where Bradley may have practiced. Bradley does not have any public disciplinary actions against his license in New Jersey and future suspension is possible, Lamm said. Bradley's New Jersey medical license is set to expire in June, 2011.

It's also unclear if Bradley ever practiced in Florida, another state where he holds an active medical license. Disciplinary actions by other states or criminal convictions would likely not come to the attention of officials in Florida until a complaint is filed or when a license comes up for renewal, said Department of Health Deputy Press Secretary Eulinda Smith.

More than a month after the arrest of pediatrician Earl Bradley, a Lewes woman is calling for changes to the accused doctor's office so the community can heal.

Bradley's office, Baybee's Pediatrics, is easy to spot from Route 1 in Lewes. Bradley, 56, used toys, cars and decorations to cover his office and surrounding yard. In December, Bradley was arrested and charged with sexually assaulting or raping several of his patients. Court documents said Bradley videotaped some of the alleged acts on some victims no older than 6-months.

Margaret Drury frequently stands outside Bradley's office on Route 1 with a sign about an hour or two a day. She said the building can stay, but Bradley's toys and decorations need to go.

"I'm saddened," Drury said. "I'm here because I want people to come together in this community and be aware that this does go on."

Drury said she is a mother and former nurse who is disgusted by what police say may have happened inside. She also claimed responsibility for hanging black ribbons around the outside of the office in what she calls a sign of grief.

One of Drury's signs asks onlookers to pressure the Delaware Attorney General's Office to remove the items. Last week, Attorney General Beau Biden announced plans by the Justice Department to freeze Bradley's assets through a civil lawsuit.

Jason Miller, a spokesman for the Department of Justice, said the lawsuit puts a lien on Bradley's property but does not give the state the authority to remove any items.

Meanwhile, a Georgetown community group is conducting a massive outreach campaign to make sure Bradley's Hispanic patients don't get overlooked.

La Esperanza said it is notifying clients of the case and directing parents of former patients to authorities. The director said there is concern that the language barrier will prevent potential victims from coming forward. As part of its outreach, the center has a bilingual translator and can provide transportation services to affected families.

Post by Nama Fri Feb 05, 2010 2:23 am

At least six families have now filed lawsuits against a pediatrician accused of pedophilia and a Lewes hospital where he once practiced, seeking damages for child sexual abuse.

There are no names of victims named in any of the lawsuits -- all are listed as either "Jane Doe" or the parents of "Jane Doe," and the lawsuits offer almost no details beyond alleging that all were patients of Dr. Earl B. Bradley and were assaulted by him.

Attorney Bruce L. Hudson said more defendants are likely to be added to the complaints and more cases filed as investigations probe the conduct of Bradley, arrested Dec. 15 on 29 felony counts of rape and sexual abuse involving nine children since August. Officials have said more than 100 victims might be involved.

One family of a 3-year-old sued Bradley and the hospital earlier this month. The complaint accused the hospital of failing to report concerns about Bradley and failing to oversee his behavior, despite signs of trouble.

Five more lawsuits were filed last week on behalf of children ages 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7, all by the same pair of attorneys, Hudson and Ben Castle. The lawsuits accuse Bradley of "sexual abuse on various occasions" throughout the children's lives, and charged Beebe Medical Center with negligence and "wanton and reckless conduct" in failing to report Bradley to appropriate medical and social service agencies.

Officials with Beebe had no comment. The company issued a written statement earlier this month denying knowledge of accusations against Bradley before his arrest.

Bradley's attorney in the criminal case, Eugene Maurer Jr., said he is not handling the civil cases against Bradley and had no comment.

When arrested, Bradley operated BayBees Pediatrics, a medical office rigged with video cameras that police allege recorded Bradley committing vicious and sometimes enraged sexual assaults against infants and young children.

Delaware law requires doctors and other health care license holders, including hospitals, to report unprofessional behavior or misconduct by other licensees, with penalties for violators.

Post by Nama Sun Feb 07, 2010 11:15 am

A Magnolia bail bonds company has filed a motion in Sussex County Superior Court to be relieved of the bond posted for Lewes pediatrician Dr. Earl Bradley. However, the motion has stalled in court.
Axe Bail Bonds, which has offices in Delaware, Maryland and soon in Pennsylvania, wants to be relieved of a $36,000 surety bond posted in Bradley’s name because the company can no longer supervise Bradley, who is incarcerated at James T. Vaughn Correctional Institute in Smyrna. Bradley is awaiting indictment on over 30 charges of rape and exploitation of young children.
Dwayne Breeding of Axe Bail Bonds said, “All the judges have disqualified themselves. Anything to do with that case can’t go before any of the judges that disqualify themselves. That means we’re stuck on the bond until we get a judge that will do the case.”
Officials with the Superior Court prothonotary’s office said the motion is still pending until a judge can be assigned to the case. Judge E. Scott Bradley was assigned as judge in the case but has passed on the motion.
Breeding explained why Axe wants to be relieved.
“Say that the jail doesn’t transport him for some reason. Then we are still responsible for getting him into the court, but we can’t get him in the court because we can’t arrest him and bring him out. I can’t guarantee he’s going to get to the courthouse because if he doesn’t go, I can’t pick him up to bring him in,” he said.
After he was arrested on the morning of Dec. 16, 2009, Bradley was released later that night on $36,000 bond. Breeding explained what happened after Bradley was released.
“When I originally did this bond, it was a transfer bond. I didn’t know who it was, what it was, what was going on, anything. That night we ended up getting called down to Lewes where we met all the detectives and stood by with them while they were in the house looking for him,” he said.
Bradley was arrested on additional charges and turned himself in the morning of Dec. 18. Lawyers in a civil suit against Bradley and Beebe Medical Center in New Castle County have said Bradley tried to destroy records in the day-and-a-half before he turned himself in.
Breeding said Axe was called by an out-of-state bond agency on behalf of a member of Bradley’s family. A transfer bond was then arranged where the out-of-state company wrote the bond and then transferred it to Axe.
Breeding did not identify who the other company was or which member of Bradley’s family was bailing him out.
The bond was transferred to Axe and written as a surety bail. Breeding said that means the client gives the bondsman 10 percent of the bail.
That 10 percent acts as the bondsman’s fee for ensuring the defendant ends up making his court date. The bond is essentially an insurance policy to ensure the defendant shows up in court.
“You pay insurance on your car – you never wreck it, you never use it. You pay insurance on these people guaranteeing them to be in court – they don’t run, they don’t use it. As soon they’re sentenced and the case is closed, we’re done,” Breeding said.
After he was rearrested, Bradley had a new bail set at $2.9 million cash. The prothonotary’s office said new bond is assessed on every charge; the first bond stays on the case as long as charges are pending.
“We could write it again if we wanted to. We’ve actually talked about writing the $2.9 [million] But the only reason why we’re not going to do it is, we’re afraid that, one, we know he’s on suicide watch in the prison. If he gets out, he’s either going to kill himself or someone is going to kill him. Then it would be up to us to find the body within the time period that we have or we have to give up $2.9 million,” Breeding said. “We know he wants to kill himself; he’s actually stated he wanted to.”
He said if Axe’s motion to be relieved is granted, no more obligation to make sure Bradley shows up in court and keeps the money it has been paid.

Post by Nama Wed Feb 10, 2010 7:13 pm

A spokeswoman for the Medical Society of Delaware says the organization did hear about concerns related to accused pedophile Dr. Earl Bradley, but the situation did not involve inappropriate behavior with patients.
Wendy Gainor, Medical Society of Delaware’s senior director of professional services, said Bradley’s sister, who at one time was the doctor’s office manager, brought concerns about the doctor’s finances and spending habits to the society’s attention.
Bradley has been in jail since December when authorities arrested him in connection with more than 30 felony counts of rape and exploitation of young children who had been the pediatrician’s patients.
“She was concerned about him as an individual and concerned about his family. No one ever brought concerns about pedophilia to us,” Gainor said.
Bradley’s license to practice medicine has been suspended by the Delaware Professional Regulation - Board of Medical Practice.
Gainor said the medical society is not an extension of the Board of Medical Practice.
“We’re not a licensing body. We don’t issue licenses, and we don’t have any control over whether a physician is licensed in the state. That’s the Board of Medical Practice’s role,” Gainor said.
Gainor said membership in the society is voluntary. She said Bradley was a member of the society, but since the criminal investigation into his alleged wrongdoing began, his membership has been suspended and is pending.
“Just like the American Medical Association nationally, we’re an advocacy and education organization. Physicians decide whether they want to become a member or not,” Gainor said.
She said the society’s purpose is to help physicians operate their medical practices by providing continuing education, business information assistance and other programs.
She said if the Board of Medical Practice thinks a physician should be monitored or counseled, the society’s role is to help make that happen.
For example, Gainor said if a doctor has a mental illness or some other problem that doesn’t affect competency or patient safety, the society has a program that physicians can voluntarily participate in to receive help they need.
“If there was anything that would come to the physicians who serve on the society’s Physicians’ Health Program that a physician would be required to report, they know they have to go to the Board of Medical Practice about it,” Gainor said.
“Just like everyone else, we’re waiting to see what happens with the Bradley case,” she said.

An announcement was made by prosecutors yesterday (Monday) that the 56-year old Delaware paediatrician by the name of Dr. Earl Bradley, has now been indicted on 471 felony counts in the alleged sexual abuse of his young patients.

According to a recent report at cnn.com, the Sussex County grand jury indictment accuses Bradley, who has had a practice in Lewes in Delaware for over 10 years now, of victimizing a total of 103 children, with all but one of the patients being girls.

The charges against Bradley, who was originally arrested in December, apparently range from rape and sexual exploitation of a child, to assault and endangering child welfare. Beau Biden, Delaware Attorney General said that the indictment is based on both video and digital evidence.

The evidence is question was said to have been seized from both Bradley’s home and medical practice, back in December. Bradley also holds medical licences in Florida, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Officials have been contacted in those states too.

Mr Eugene Maurer Jr., who is Bradley’s attorney, says that he will base his client’s defense on his mental health. “Most of the evidence in this case comes from videotapes – it’s kind of hard to argue with videotapes,” Maurer said.

The 160-page indictment alleges Dr Bradley was videotaping sexual exploitation of his patients at his office in Lewes, Delaware as far back as December 1998.
Many victims were allegedly assaulted repeatedly, some on consecutive days.
One girl was allegedly raped more than a dozen times over a period of more than a year.
The indictment contains a gap from October 2004 to June 2006, during which no alleged crimes are listed.
Authorities would not say whether they think Dr Bradley videotaped all of the alleged assaults or whether there could be more victims.
Beau Biden, Delaware's Attorney General, broke down in tears as he described the alleged offences.
He said: "These were crimes committed against the most vulnerable among us, those without voices. I expect that we will add to this indictment with new charges over the coming months.
"The charges in this indictment are unique in the history of the state of Delaware as far as I can tell."
He said that while there have been other cases around the US involving the alleged abuse of multiple children, "I know of no other that has this many victims."
Dr Bradley was arrested in December after a two-year-old girl allegedly told her mother that the doctor hurt her when he took her to a basement room of his Baybees paediatric office after an exam.
His medical licence was permanently revoked by the state Board of Medical Practice last week.
Prosecutors did not say how many of the alleged victims on the videos had been identified.
Dr Bradley's lawyer, Eugene Maurer, said the "real battleground" in the case will be Dr Bradley's mental state, not what is seen on the video tapes.
He said: "The issue in this case is going to come down to his mental health at the time."

I just heard about this case for the first time on JVM today! I can now see that it has been in the news since December 2009, and on this thread since January 2010.

I, like all of you, am sickened, horrified, and at a loss for words. Most of all I am heart-broken for the girls who were victimized by someone they trusted... it was so tragic & preventable. And it raises so many questions that need to be answered:

How long has this "monster" been doing this? Is this what led him to become a pediatrician? Does he have a wife, and if so, was she not aware of this? It says he has children... were they also victimized by him? Why were the parents so trusting of someone who looked so scary?

In my opinion, people "idolize" doctors waaay too much - they are human just like us! We all need to be much more vigilant in the future!! NEVER leave your child alone with a strange man (or woman, unfortunately)... ESPECIALLY if he/she is a doctor!! And... LISTEN TO YOUR CHILDREN!! If they complain about inappropriate behaviour (kissing, touching, etc.)... TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY!!!

In my opinion, we ALL need to "wake up & smell the coffee"... there is a war on children going on right under our noses & we as mothers, grandmas, aunts, sisters, etc. need to start fighting to protect them! This may even include your favorite doctor, uncle, coach, etc.

It just apalls me that this "monster" (who disguised himself as a doctor) had the gall to actually videotape his assaults on the children. To me, this shows that he had no fear of being arrested - he felt "invincible"!! Well... thank GOD he is in jail now & I hope that he stays there for the rest of his life (with a big tough guy who will perform "examinations" on him)!! angry

Post by Nama Wed Feb 24, 2010 9:36 am

The indictment of former Lewes pediatrician Earl Bradley could be described as novel-like in length and scope -- a seemingly endless series of charges.
The more-than-160 page indictment lists 103 child victims, including one boy, and 471 total counts, describing a continuing pattern of abuse over 11 years. Most of the charges are for first-degree rape, second-degree rape, unlawful sexual contact and sexual exploitation of a child.
Other charges include four counts of reckless endangerment, four counts of second-degree assault and nine counts of continuous sexual abuse. The charges were based on evidence contained in 13 hours of video files, computer hard drives and digital media files seized from Bradley’s home and office, BayBees Pediatrics on Route 1 in Lewes.
The earliest incidence of abuse listed in the indictment is alleged to have taken place on or around Dec. 10, 1998, with the most recent case on Dec. 13, 2009. Bradley was arrested on Dec. 16, 2009.
Forty-four counts relate to a single child, who was raped several times over a period of more 13 months. The indictment alleges, on June 7, 2008, Bradley forced this victim to perform oral sex on him, denying her sufficient ability to breathe to the extent she appeared on the videotape to lose consciousness or stop breathing.
Another young girl, who the indictment says had not yet reached her sixth birthday, was part of a video allegedly edited by Bradley into at least two clips that showed the doctor performing and forcing the child to have oral sex.
Attorney General Joseph “Beau” Biden III said at a press conference Monday, Feb. 22, he expects to add more charges to the indictment over the coming months.
“I’m committed to prosecuting this case to the fullest extent of the law. I remain committed to doing so,” he said.
Delaware State Police opened an investigation of Bradley in December 2008 in response to allegations of abuse. Police attempted to get a search warrant in 2008 but were denied. Police continued the investigation until Bradley's arrest last year. The timeline of the alleged abuses shows 48 victims were abused during 2009.
Biden said the indictment opens the next phase of the prosecution of the case: an arraignment. Biden did not say whether the Bradley case was the largest case of child abuse in United States history, but he did say he knew of no other case that had this many victims.
“It is difficult to talk about sexual abuse, and its even more difficult to acknowledge that sexual abuse of young children takes place in our state, let alone Lewes, one of the most beautiful places our state has to offer,” Biden said. “The charges in this indictment, are unique in the state of Delaware. These were crimes committed against the most vulnerable among us.”

Five girls who "appeared to lose consciousness" during sex assaults are shown in video recordings seized from Earl B. Bradley's home and pediatrics office in Lewes, according to a 471-count indictment handed down Monday by a Sussex County grand jury.

"Our worst fears have been realized," said one stunned woman, whose two girls were Bradley's patients several years ago. The new details emerged in the indictment, which accused Bradley of raping or sexually abusing 103 children.

Told that the indictment said some victims appeared to become unconscious or stop breathing during the attacks, the woman was at first speechless.

"Oh my God," she finally said. "He's just pure evil. No one with a conscience could do this."

Now being compared with the worst pedophiles in U.S. history, Bradley was originally charged with raping nine girls in December. Many had been waiting to see how many victims would be found from video recordings seized from Bradley's home and office in Lewes after prosecutors said there could be as many as 100 victims. Attorney General Beau Biden said more victims are being identified through interviews with parents and children.

"Unbelievable," said Patricia Tedford, director of Contact Lifeline, a group that helps abuse victims and families in Delaware and has offered counseling to Bradley's alleged victims. "It kind of gives our lovely state a bad reputation. Not that I don't think this occurs elsewhere, but the scope of it is so unbelievable."

The sex attacks caught on video files seized by investigators in December began in 1998 and continued through Dec. 13 -- three days before his arrest, the indictment said. Most occurred over the last three years. All but one was a girl, and court records have said one was as young as 3 months.

The indictment and other court records accused Bradley, who had offices in Lewes and Milford, of fondling the children and forcing them to engage in oral sex and intercourse, at times with youngsters screaming and trying to escape.

Prosecutors are still trying to identify many of the children on the tapes.

Bradley, 56, who is awaiting arraignment while being held at the state prison near Smyrna in lieu of $2.9 million bail, will be pursuing a mental illness defense, his lawyer, Gene Maurer, said. Bradley's medical license was revoked last week.

Before his arrest, prosecutors had twice investigated him for improper behavior with patients -- excessive kissing and improper vaginal exams -- first in 2005 and then in 2008, but neither investigation led to an arrest or a report to the Delaware Board of Medical Practice, which disciplines doctors. One pediatrician and former colleague, Dr. Lowell Scott, even told police he referred to Bradley as "a pedophile," though Scott told The News Journal his remarks to a detective were taken "out of context."

"There's a black cloud over this area," said the mother, a Rehoboth Beach business owner who spoke on the condition of anonymity but doesn't think her two daughters, patients several years ago, were victims. "Instead of joking amongst themselves that he was a pedophile, his colleagues should have been turning him in. They dropped the ball."

'Ready access to victims'

While doctors have been charged with abusing children in other states, authorities in Delaware and elsewhere struggled to recall another case of serial pedophilia by a physician or any other person on the scale of which Bradley has been charged.

Biden said he has never heard of a case with so many victims.

Seth L. Goldstein, a lawyer and former police officer who heads the nonprofit Child Abuse Forensic Institute in California, said it's not unheard of for pedophiles to have so many victims. He said one study in 1982 found that the average pedophile has nearly 70 victims, but could not recall any specific cases with so many.

Goldstein cited the ongoing prosecution of California psychiatrist William Ayres, but that doctor was charged with abusing six boys.

Goldstein also mentioned the infamous McMartin case in California in the late 1980s, when several members of a family that ran a day care were charged with 321 counts of abuse involving 48 children. That case, which did not provide prosecutors the benefit of video-recorded attacks, ended without convictions after children's accounts proved inconsistent.

In Ohio, two twin brothers who were pediatricians, Scott and Mark Blankenburg, were sentenced recently to long prison terms for sex and drug crimes against six teenage boys.

While Goldstein stressed that he has no specific knowledge of the Bradley case, he said the Delaware doctor fits the profile of someone with a predilection toward abusing one sex and "places himself in a situation where he had ready access to victims." He compared Bradley to abusive priests, scout leaders and teachers who enter professions where children are easy targets.

Pedophiles sometimes make video recordings, Goldstein said, as trophies of their conquests as well as a means to fantasize about and "relive their experience."

In one pedophile case he followed, Goldstein said, the predator labeled video recordings with the date, child's age and sex act and other details of the assault.

"They go to great lengths to make records, mostly for their own use, but when they find themselves in contact with others, which is not hard to do with the Internet, they share and exchange files," Goldstein said.

Though Biden has said the investigation is ongoing, authorities have not indicated Bradley shared the files with other pedophiles.

Tedford said video-recording by child predators "is not a one-time act. They continue to do it until they get caught," she said. "It just grows and grows until it becomes bigger than they are. There is no sense of right and wrong or the harm they are doing to their victim."

While digesting the latest revelations, Tedford and others said they are bracing themselves for further charges and accusations.

"You don't want to believe it, and there's a natural human reaction at first that it can't be," she said. "Nobody wants to believe that it's been going on."

Another woman who said she spoke to police around 2005 about an alleged attack against her young daughter years earlier expects that prosecutors will ultimately find Bradley had hundreds of victims: "This is only the tip of the iceberg."

I guess it's just luck that someone finally paid attention to the accusations against this pervert, criminal, yuck of a person. How did this mother manage to get this guy investigated, was she just more persistant or did she just talk to the right LE person? She and her daughter are heros in my eyes. It is disgusting that other pediatricians called him a pedophile and joked about it...WTF...in what circumstances could that possibly be funny!!??
