Investigators said during a news conference they cannot release evidence that lead them to that conclusion.
State Police Superintendent Col. Steven Flaherty said an autopsy will be performed to confirm that the remains are Morgan’s.

The months-long search for Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington, who went missing outside an Oct. 17 rock concert in Charlottesville, appeared to have ended Tuesday when her remains were discovered on a farm several miles southwest of where she was last seen alive.

Police said they think the skeletal remains are Harrington's, the Associated Press reported late Tuesday. Police had not determined how Harrington died. Her remains were sent to the state medical examiner's office and police scoured the scene for clues.

For family and friends who had tirelessly searched and prayed for Harrington's safe return, hope turned to sorrow. They mourned the death of the vibrant 20-year-old who planned to become a teacher and was known for her eclectic taste in music -- she appreciated everything from Black Sabbath to Barry Manilow.

The night of her disappearance, Harrington got separated from friends at a Metallica concert in Charlottesville. The willowy blonde ended up outside the University of Virginia's John Paul Jones Arena and couldn't get back in. She talked to one of her friends by cellphone, saying not to worry, that she'd get home on her own. But she never made it.

Harrington was last seen about 9:30 p.m., walking alone on the Copeley Road railroad bridge near the arena, a site that has since become a shrine of sorts. She had a scratch on her chin, witnesses told police, but officers said they think it probably was from an accidental bump or fall, not an attack. Her purse and cellphone were found the next day in a grassy lot used for overflow parking.



After her disappearance, police reviewed surveillance camera footage and asked fans to check concert photos for signs of Harrington. Police and friends handed out missing-person posters. The family created a Web site to help in the search. But every avenue turned up empty.

Then, about 10 a.m. Tuesday, police were contacted by a resident who found human remains on his farm near Interstate 64 southwest of Charlottesville.

People from across the country, and even around the world, followed the search for Harrington as her parents, Gil and Daniel, chronicled their anguish in a blog, hoping someone would come forward to help them find their daughter. The Harringtons said they received notes of encouragement from as far away as Japan.

On Jan. 12, Gil Harrington posted this thought: "I remind myself that this is not in my hands and that the truth cannot be hidden forever -- it will out. I pray that the truth of this crime shows itself while Morgan is still alive. I have no interest in recovering a body. I would rather not know and always have some morsel of hope."

Morgan Harrington was close to her parents and visited their Roanoke house often. She also had a brother, Alex. Her family said Harrington had a close circle of friends. She loved to curl up with books. And she spent her high school summers working with children who have witnessed domestic violence.

Gil Harrington last saw her daughter the morning of the concert. Morgan Harrington tried on several outfits for the concert, with her mother offering fashion advice. They settled on a black Pantera T-shirt, black miniskirt, black tights and knee-high black boots. Harrington talked to her father by phone.

The 20-year-old bounded out of the house about noon, saying goodbye to her mother using the family's traditional greeting: "Two, four, one, Mama." Shorthand for: "I love you too much, forever, and one more time."

This is so sad but unfortunately, not surprising. Whoever did this to her made sure they hid her body well. They would have had to carry her for over a mile from the way the Anchorage Farms person spoke.

And, for the Harrington's to have to go out there and identify a skull and human bones is just horrific. How could they be sure? I don't think they could be.

Jeanne, I know you have been following this case down to the letter and I am sure this news is hard for you to hear. But, like the Harrington's are saying, at least they know.

I pray they find the person or person's who did this to Morgan. Artgal, you said it all. These teens and tweens need to be more careful. Heck, even we adults need to watch our backs!!

Someone would have to be rather familiar with this area wouldnt they to have buried her out there?

Morgan wasn't buried or even covered when her body was found. There didn't seem to be any attempt to hide her.

There seems to be a dispute about whether this was a hayfield or not. I heard it was very tall grass that had become flattened due to snow. I dont think someone could have carried her body in to that area- the theory is she walked in. Maybe she was forced in. That area is remote, even the farmer says he doesnt go there more than once a year - it has to be someone familiar with that farm.

A Gentle Tribute On Copeley Road

A body was found about seven miles from UVA's Copeley Road Bridge. That's the last place Morgan Harrington was seen October 17th, and the site of a make-shift memorial; a memorial that has new meaning for some now.

It's quiet and cold along Copeley Road. For months this bridge has been a place for hope and comfort. Now with news that police may have found Morgan's body, students are stopping by to share their heartache.

Fresh cut flowers and heavy hearts line the Copeley Road Bridge. Elizabeth Wilkinson went to high school with Morgan Harrington and is now a fourth-year at UVA. "It's halfway a blessing and it's halfway really depressing just to see how many people care about her, " she says.

Tuesday night, cards and a single candle marked the spot where Harrington was last seen alive. As news spread that State Police are "fairly confident" they've found her remains, emotions were running high.

Wilkinson says, "She's my age, it's somebody that went through something terrible and it's hard to think of someone suffering so much."

The news hit hard on grounds. Women Morgan's age out pledging for sororities say it could have just as easily been one of them.

Elizabeth Cream is a UVA first-year. She says, "It's really, really, really scary, she was a smart, intelligent, woman just like all the girls here at UVA."

UVA first-year Katie Grubiak says, "It's definitely gone through my mind, it definitely could have been anyone, she was a girl just like me."

Posters and notes of hope for the Harringtons have weathered months of rain and snow along the bridge. Now Wilkinson hopes their storm is over, and that if police have in fact found Morgan Harrington, they may soon find peace.

Students have been stopping by the Copeley Road Bridge all night Tuesday. Just after 7:00 p.m. there were just a few items, but the memorial has grown quite a bit since then.

It's been 3 months since she went missing and the weather has been cold. Unlike Caylee whose body was missing for 6 months in very hot, muggy weather and lots of rain.

My point is I wonder if the forensics staff will be able to tell cause of death..even if she was already dead when she got to the farm or not.

I cannot imagine the parents having to go ID her body in that condition. My heart truly goes out to them.

I pray they are able to tell cause of death (I think either strangulation or drug overdose) and a suspect in this case.

Her poor family. Sad to say, at least they do have an answer of sorts, now. At least her parents can bring her home, get her out of the elements. Treat her remains with the respect that she deserves.

Upthread the farmer that found Morgan said there was no hair on the skull. Now we hear on NG and other places that the skull was covered with long blond hair? Which is it?
We know it is her, her black outfit was beside her and she was wearing her bracelet. I am so sad for this beautiful life, gone.

I think her skull was mostly bald with maybe some strands of blond hair. My God, that was so hard to type.

I wonder if she was drunk and passed out and the ass just left her drunk on that farm and she died of alcohol poisoning or a combination of alcohol and drugs.

I am just speculating.

I doubt that she was carried a mile and a half into the area where she was found. If she had a spiked drink, like with Roofies, she could have walked on her own into the field, not even knowing what she was doing. Since her clothes were there it leads me to believe that she was still alive in the field for a time. U R right, hard to write words like this about Morgan.

So, if that is the case and she walked on her own, what did she die of? I hope there are enough remains for an autopsy. God Bless her!!

Maybe the drugs wore off, she came to and was being raped, and started screaming. I imagine the same thing happened to her as to Natalee Holloway. I agree with Jeanne, stay in groups, stay in pairs!! Do not deviate, I do not care how cute the guy is. His face could be the last face that you ever see.

I am concerned about the complacency in Charlottesville. I am feeling a tendency to downplay Morgan’s abduction, to protect the idyllic reputation of the city. I bought into that idyllic image until my daughter was stolen there. I understand the reluctance to be associated with this crime. I myself would prefer not to be known as the Mom of a missing girl. Charlottesville would prefer not to be recognized as the location of abduction. But there is no going back. These roles have been thrust upon us. I don’t think it is correct to downplay Morgan’s abduction to the community. To explain that this abduction occurred because Morgan made herself vulnerable – so not to worry – Vulnerable to what? To the PREDATOR who was there on October 17, 2009 and was still there in November. A bad event happened in Charlottesville – be known as the place where this act was NOT tolerated, not dismissed, be relentless, be clever, be resourceful, and find Morgan. Protect people rather than reputations, they are infinitely more precious.

Thanks for sharing this Jeanne. Yesterday as I read up on this case, I got the funny feeling that this case wasn't being investigated as it should be. The biggest red flag I noticed was the comment made by LE (don't recall exactly who) that they were just about to start searching the area where the farmer found the body. What????? Didn't this happen in October? Why were they just starting to think about searching that area? My heart goes out to all these families.

The skeletal remains found yesterday are now confirmed to be Morgan Harrington's body after dental records identified the remains found at Anchorage Farm. The Virginia Tech student's body was found in a hayfield, and the 20-year-old student went missing after a Metallica concert on October 17th.
Autopsy results are still pending after the remains were found by a farmer driving a tractor through the hay field at Anchorage Farm. It's about 10 miles from where Morgan went missing.

Farmer David Dass immediately called 911 when he saw the skull.

Morgan Harrington's family is now in the area and they are asking for privacy at this time.

We're hearing from the parents of a Virginia Tech student a day after her body was found on a remote farm. Morgan Harrington's remains were discovered three months after she disappeared from a concert at UVA.

Gil Harrington, Morgan's mother, said, "We weren't going to give up until we found Morgan but now we have Morgan so now is the time for mourning and black ribbons."

The parents of 20-year-old Morgan Harrington searched for three long, anxiety-filled months. Wednesday, dental records confirmed a body found Tuesday on an Albemarle County farm is their daughter's body.

"For the first time in 101 days, I am not thinking every minute what is he doing to my daughter now...what is she having to endure?" shared Gil Harrington.

The farm's owner discovered the skeletal remains in a hayfield in a remote area of his property. Police said the grass was waist high when Harrington disappeared from a Metallica concert at the sports arena at the University of Virginia last October.

The closest public road is a mile away from where she was found. Her father said he firmly believes someone familiar with such an obscure location is responsible for her death.

"This is not a random place that someone came upon accidentally," stated Dan Harrington. "This is known to someone here. It is a local person."

Morgan Harrington's body was found just nine miles south of campus. The autopsy will reveal exact cause of death but with the possibility of a killer or killers on the loose, there is a sense of unease among students at the University of Virginia.

"It is unsettling. I think I have to be more careful in terms of when I choose to walk by myself," UVA student Alexa Peyton told us.

UVA student Sophi Nossir added, "Definitely staying together is always really important."

As for the next step, Dan Harrington said, "We now need to find the person that did this and we will not stop until that person is brought to justice."

The Harrington family and the rock band Metallica are still offering a $150,000 reward for information that leads to the conviction of the person or people responsible for Morgan's disappearance.

Goodness sakes! Was anybody else watching Morgan's parents on NG tonight? I don't see how they can talk about this so dispassionately...I mean, I can tell that they are hurting, but Mom talking about "staring at the empty sockets in her cranium"!? I just can't imagine even thinking about my daughter like that, much less actually looking at her like that and then talking about it so calmly...

And now we know something about Alex.. maybe... I would love to think the photo is one he did as a prank, if not, looks like there are some issues there.

The girl who works for me who is 24 when she read about Morgan was surprised at her liking Metallica
which is a heavy metal band. I dont know if the four year age diffence between them makes a difference as to what kids like in music now days, but heavy metal is a whole other culture. So is Goth - which is what my sister mentioned as it was reported that Morgan was dressed all in black. I said I didnt think so, dressing in all black doesnt mean Goth necessarily. These interests dont necessarily signal anything on their own,
but sometimes they attract certain elements that arent desirable. My thoughts were that Morgan planned to get out of the concert on her own to meet someone. It doesnt make any sense that she would be so excited about a concert and then leave and not want to get back in to be with her friends. Also the fact that the tickets were bought far in advance also makes me think that whomever she met (possibly on the internet) was not local but visited the area frequently and was going to be coming there at the time of the concert. Just some thoughts on this terrible case.

I saw Gun's N' Roses and Metallica when I was in my early 40's. I really like some of their music so I don't think that means anything. I think she was definitely a Metallica fan but may have had something slipped in her drink or taken pills. It was also said that she was drunk.

As far as her brother, Alex, I don't know if the picture of him was a prank or not but I had heard on television that he was gay and living in NYC.

So its possible that she wasnt drunk - maybe lightly drugged that made them think she was drunk.
It still doesnt make sense to me that she would leave the concert after having looked forward to it for so long. But maybe she planned to meet someone there, someone who didnt live in the area and was going to come in and meet her at the concert who she wanted to leave with. Girls usually have friends they confide it, I would think if she was meeting someone she might have confided in one of her friends - unless
she was told not to.

Maybe she was not as excited about the concert as she was about a planned meeting with someone...I'm sure that her computer has been analyzed, so if that were true, it looks like LE would have a prime suspect...unless she (maybe by direction) took pains to conceal these contacts...all speculation, of course.

I hope the cameras do not roll over and re tape after a certain amount of time. Morgan's friends said she liked all music, from hard rock to Barry Manilow.
I thought that she went to the bathroom and went out the wrong door and could not get in. Called her friends inside. makes NO sense. If I got locked out, I would call my friends and have them bring my ticket down to the will call desk. That is another issue for me....why did SHE NOT have her ticket? Does LE know that for sure? Have they seen her ticket? Who gives their ticket to a friend?

This is what I think may have happened. She spiked her coke or sprite with alcohol. Maybe took a pill or two. Was in the concert and started to get sick. There was a huge line to the bathrooms so she ran outside and up-chucked. Still feeling the affects, she asked to be let back in. I am not sure if she had her ticket or not, but for some reason, the ticket person would not let her in. Maybe it's a rule if you walk out (ticket or not) you cannot come back in.

So, she is out of it. Tries to call her parents, drops her phone and the battery goes flying. She is too wasted to find it and it's dark out. She starts thumbing for a ride, (something she would never do sober) gets picked up by someone who does her in.

I do NOT think she went there to meet anyone. I would love to have more information from the ticket person who saw her wanting to come back in.

Also, a woman who came to pick up her son from the concert said she heard and saw a blond girl dressed in black and a young man arguing but didn't do anything about it.

and p.s. Yep, Morgan sounds like she had a huge range in good music, everything from Metallica to Barry Manilow (seen him twice in concert) to Barbra. She was truly a beautiful girl and looked just like her mother.

I do have to say that I am a tad blown away how utterly calm they are when interviewed.

Wrap, I think your theory makes sense, EXCEPT, you don't mention the friends. Why did they not do something to try to get her back into the concert? Why did they leave after the concert without calling her parents or the police if they didn't know where she was? Did the friends spike their drinks and pop a pill or two also and did they know Morgan did so? Why would she leave, even in a drunken stupor, why would she leave without some destination in mind?

I think her parents are in a state of shock, totally numb and disassociated from the reality of the situation, probably the only way they can endure it.

Good questions, Laga. And I would have to say that YES, they were all messed up and don't want the police to know that. It's the only viable explanation that I can come up with as to WHY they didn't at least call her parents. I bet they have a lot of guilt inside of them now.

As far as the parents, it is almost like they are robotic. I realize Mr. Harrington is a Psychiatrist but seriously, when Mrs. Harrington was talking about being able to see her daughters cranium, I had to turn the channel. Neither of them seem "normal" to me. But, on the flip side..they are not junkies or pill pushers or in and out of the clinker.

Clouds were mottled, purple bruises over the Blue Ridge as we drove over Afton Mountain to reclaim the skelontinized remains of our precious daughter, Morgan Dana Harrington.

We had tried to prepare ourselves for this eventuality for three months, but the reality of it is sharp and disorienting. How could someone have erased so much of what Morgan was and reduced her to a jumbled heap of bones? What a waste, what a desecration, a gross injustice.

Who would ever have thought it would be mine to see every image of Morgan’s life – from her first faint shadows on fetal ultrasound to the gaping orbital hollows in her skull? An abomination to witness this ending.

And yet there is growing peace. We realize Morgan has been dead for some time. Perhaps even since the day of the concert, October 17, 2009. Morgan Dana Harrington has been at peace, beyond pain and suffering, knowing that brings us some peace also.

Once her body is restored to us and put to rest, we can finally begin the hard work of grieving and growing strong as a triangulated family. Bless all of you who have held us up on this journey. My Darling Morgan!

I am sorry I have neglected all of you. I have been consumed with finding MOrgan. And as posted her body has been found. On a 700 acre farm that is not accessable except by a four wheeler or tractor. Amazing that this young beautiful girl laid out in the elements with the leaves and snow covering the beautiful person that was Morgan.
I can't say what drew me to Morgan. Some of the similarities are that her father Dan and I are both from WVA. Her father works at the university and my uncle was a professor. Her mother is a nurse and makes trips to Africa to tend the sick and dying. They have one child remaining a brother, Alex who is beyond devastated.

They have not arrested anybody. They are waiting for DNA to be analyized.

Then if an arrest is made of course the man or women that caused this beaufitul womans death will be read all his/her rights and it will begin.

What a shame that a life so beautiful is gone. The potential for somebody to do good things in this world of ours is gone.

Her parents are grieving for their beautiful inside and outside Morgan.

I know it sounds strange to find comfort knowing that Morgan had been out in that field, but it is true that she was better off there safe with Mother Nature while this time passed. It is just very rare to hear those feelings so shockingly expressed. it is very sad...

Morgan's mother, Gil, reminds me a bit of Sharon Rocca, strong in the face of such evil. Her words really struck me, anyone of us here with a child could have had the sad task of writing those words. WE could be Morgan's parents in this violent society.
We do have grieving parents here at VH, I admire their strength, every day.

A memorial mass for Virginia Tech student Morgan Dana Harrington will take place Feb. 5 at 3:30 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in the victim’s hometown of Roanoke.

Harrington, 20, was reported missing Oct. 17 after leaving a Metallica concert at John Paul Jones Arena. Morgan Harrington's killer unwittingly offered a clue to his identity when he chose to leave her in a remote hayfield of an Albemarle County farm, according to state police investigators. They now say they believe he is someone familiar with the rural terrain.

The streams, fences and rugged landscape of Anchorage Farm, where the 20-year-old Roanoke County woman's body was found last week, would have deterred anyone who did not know the farm or surrounding land, said state police Lt. Joe Rader on Thursday.

"We don't believe those are challenges someone unfamiliar with the area would confront," Rader said, adding that the body's location is the "most significant" aspect of the investigation so far.

At a news conference Thursday afternoon in which he expressed confidence that investigators would solve the case, Rader said the person who left Harrington's body in waist-high grass on the farm passed up "more convenient and accessible" locations.

"Investigators believe the person may have traveled, worked, recreated, visited or periodically passed through the farm or nearby area," Rader said. "You could not have just walked in there without having to be able to negotiate things. You had to be familiar with the layout."

So important is the location to the investigation that police have set up a new tip line, 434-709-1685, specifically for residents of the area to report anything notable or out of the ordinary they might have seen or heard. Other callers are still being urged to use the original tip line, 434-352-3467.

Harrington, a student at Virginia Tech, disappeared Oct. 17 after leaving the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, where she had gone with friends to hear the rock band Metallica. She was last seen south of the arena, trying to hitch a ride on the Copeley Road bridge.

The owner of Anchorage Farm, David Bass, found Harrington's skeletal remains Jan. 26 while riding a tractor across his 742-acre farm, which is in the rural North Garden area of Charlottesville, about 10 miles south of where the young woman was last seen. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond has ruled her death a homicide.

On Thursday, Rader said criminal profilers, both in and outside Virginia, have helped investigators come to six conclusions:

The person responsible for Harrington's death was familiar with the farm or the immediately surrounding area.
"Past experience" at the farm may have "inclined" the person to come there with Harrington during what was likely a time of great stress.
Residents of the area "through no fault of their own" know the person, or know someone who passed through at a crucial time.
The person has "specific knowledge" of the area and is comfortable there.
The person chose the farm site instead of other areas considered less risky, such as the side of a road.
"This particular location would have been a high-risk location unless you're familiar with that area," Rader said.
State police said the discovery of Harrington's body has generated tips, but investigators hope for more clues from residents who might have previously considered information they have too inconsequential to report.

"We will solve this," Rader said. "It's really going to be important that we listen to people who know the area."

A beautiful memorial service for Morgan at the Catholic Church St. Andrews. Quite a few in attendence considering the snow storm outside. There is a video of the service on line. The end was lovely. Gil and Dan Harrington both spoke of the love of their daughter. Quite moving and touching.

They are still trying to find the killer. There is a SO that lives very close to where the body was found. I think the must have some kind of air tight alibi that they have not arrested him yet and the Det. Redar is almost pleading with neighbors to tell what they know.

They have been blogging about him but have shut some of those conversations down. Probably interfering with his rights if they arrest him.
