-Miami Beach Police have detained an Airzona mother who is suspected of 'custodial interference' of her own baby boy.
Now the search is on for Elizabeth Johnson's 8 month old child.
Arizona authorities say that they know Johnson was in San Antonio, Texas from December 22nd through December 27th.
Her son Gabriel has not been seen since December 26th.
Police arrested Johnson Wednesday night at a youth hostel on Miami Beach.
Johnson was scheduled to appear in Maricopa County Superior Court's Family Court in Phoenix for a Dec. 28 custodial hearing. But authorities say she failed to appear and lost custodial rights to 8-month-old Gabriel Johnson.

why was Elizabeth Johnson, 23, was in San Antonio?
Police are looking for a missing Arizona boy last seen here with his mother on Dec. 26, according to the Tempe Police Department.
Authorities do not know why Elizabeth Johnson, 23, was in San Antonio over the course of five days with her son Gabriel, said Sgt. Steve Carbajal, a spokesman for Tempe Police. Police are concerned for the safety of the boy, 8 months old, because his mother made previous threats against him.
On Wednesday, Johnson was arrested in Miami Beach, Fla.,. Gabriel was not with her.
She left Arizona with her son on Dec. 18, arrived here on Dec. 22 and left around Dec. 27, according to a police press release.
Johnson failed to appear on Dec. 28 for a custody hearing in an Arizona courthouse and a warrant was issued for her arrest for custodial interference, Carbajal said.
Johnson's car has not been found, authorities said. It is a white, 1995 Oldsmobile Delta 88, with Arizona license plate AGZ4214, according to the release. Anyone with information is asked to call Tempe Police at (480) 350-8311 or Silent Witness at (480) 948-6377.

So, let me get this straight. The mother is from Phoenix. She split town with her child who she has threatened and came to San Antonio. However, she ended up being arrested in Miami Beach, FL and her son was not with her.
I have a lot of questions.
1)What specfically did the mother threaten the child with?
2)Where is the father?
3)How does LE know she was in San Antonio? Have they spoken to anyone who saw her?
4)She hot-tailed it to Miami Beach from San Antonio. No car is found. Did she fly? Did she leave her child in San Antionio? Where was she found in Miami Beach??

A- CBS4: This is not sounding good.
Miami Beach Police have arrested an Arizona woman wanted for allegedly kidnapping her own baby in a custody dispute; now, police are searching for her missing 8-month-old child.
Mother Elizabeth Johnson, 23, is not talking, according to Miami Beach police.
Sergeant Wayne Jones with the Miami Beach Police department told CBS4's Gwen Belton that, "interviews with her have not produced fruitful information; she has been very reluctant to give anything that will help us find this child."
Miami Beach police say when they arrested Johnson there was no sign she had been traveling with a baby.

Kimberly Guilfoile was hosting Geraldo last night. Her panel felt there were three options, she sold the baby, killed the baby or gave it away. The old, 'if I can't have the baby, no one can' state of mind.. Reminded me so much of the Trenton Duckett case.

As much as I like Kimberly Guilfoile, what other options would there be? A big "duh" on that one.
I think she did something to her child in San Antonio, but LE has NOT said how they know she was there or if she was seen with the baby in San Antone. I think she then hopped a plane to Miami Beach.
Adela, I agree. This is NOT looking good at all.

They dont say what she threatened him with. maybe she really did just sell him. Maybe that was the threat.
There are plenty of...er..decent, i wont say FANTASTIC, but decent and good fathers out there who want their children, only to have them with a woman who wants the baby to make $$$. I am following a case right now where a young mother took her daughter to utah to put her up for adoption, knowing that the father wanted to raise his daughter even if she didnt.
Maybe all this baby meant to her was money, and maybe she got what she wanted. One could hope anyhow that hes alive and well with a family who wanted him and paid for him. Maybe he can be found and returned to his father. I dont know wether i believe she HARMED him physically...but time will tell

The father of a missing 8-month-old boy says he received a text message from the child's mother saying she had killed him weeks after she had tried to put him up for adoption.
During a news conference at a Tempe police substation on Monday, Logan McQueary said his ex-girlfriend tried several times in the past month to get him to give up his parental rights to the boy and then sent McQueary text messages last week saying she had killed their son.
Elizabeth Johnson, 23, was arrested Dec. 30 in Miami Beach, Fla. The couple's son, Gabriel, has not been seen since Dec. 26 when Johnson checked into a San Antonio hotel.
Johnson has invoked her right to remain silent and has refused to give investigators any information on where her son might be. She's awaiting extradition.
McQueary said Monday that he and Johnson lived together for two years but broke up early last month. She asked him to leave their Tempe home and then called him at work the next day, Dec. 9, telling him to sign over his parental rights to a couple who wanted to adopt the baby.
He refused and hasn't seen his son since.
In front of a panel of reporters and with his father, Frank, by his side, McQueary said he had been approached by the prospective parents, begging him to sign paperwork and insisting Johnson wouldn't come back until he did.
McQueary again refused.
The couple hoping to adopt are not speaking to police, and investigators have searched their home to be sure the child wasn't with them, said Sgt. Steve Carbajal, a Tempe police spokesman.
It's unclear whether the couple had a role in the boy's disappearance or whether charges could be levied in the future, he said.
In the meantime, police and family members don't know if Gabriel is alive.
The drama for police began last week when McQueary came to them with text messages sent from Johnson's phone Dec. 27.
After the breakup, McQueary filed for full custody. The couple had a court date set for Dec. 28. When Johnson failed to show up, McQueary was given full custody and a warrant was issued for her arrest.
After McQueary notified police about the texts, they began looking for the mother.
McQueary's father said his son "did his best to make a family with her and with Gabriel. She had some emotional problems. One day she would be happy and easygoing and good, and the next day not good, breaking things and yelling."
The elder McQueary said he believed Johnson was capable of hurting her son.
Logan McQueary said he has "a feeling" his son is still alive.
With tears brimming in his eyes, he said he misses his son, loves his son, and intends to raise him on his own if and when Gabriel is returned.
"She doesn't need to go through all this, put everyone else through all this," he said.
Police have witness reports that Gabriel was alive and with his mother in San Antonio on Dec. 26 at one or both of two hotels: Home Gate Studio and Suites, and Quality Inn Fiesta Park. She never formally checked out of either hotel but was scheduled to do so on the 27th. Police don't know where she was between then and Dec. 30, when she was found in Florida. There's also a possibility she may have spent time in Nashville.
Authorities are still looking for Johnson's car, a white 1995 Oldsmobile Delta 88 with Arizona license AGZ-4214.
Investigators are chasing down other leads, and the media have picked up the story in San Antonio and Miami.
Anyone with information is asked to call Tempe police at 480-350-8311 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.

Potential adoptive parents speak
Tammi and Jack Smith say they were looking out for the best interest of Gabriel Johnson when they started spending time with him and his mother, Elizabeth Johnson, nearly a month ago.
"We had a complete bond with him," said Tammi Peter-Smith.
The Smiths told CBS5 they are confident little Gabriel is alive. They were in contact with Elizabeth Johnson up until she was arrested, and they could hear Gabriel through the phone in the background.
"I heard the baby babble... I heard the baby cry, " Smith said.
They even received text messaged disputing the threats Elizabeth made about hurting Gabriel.
"Immediately after she sent him the text that said she killed the baby, she sent us a text saying that she did that to get back at the father and that the baby was fine," said Jack Smith.
The Smiths spent significant time getting to know Gabriel and have several pictures with the boy in their home, playing with their own four-year-old daughter.
They say they didn't involve the father, Logan McQueary in the adoption procedures because Elizabeth Johnson told them he was abusive.
"As soon as she got away from Logan and we had the baby, and he was not a part of her life, all of the sudden she had a bright cheery attitude about herself," said Tammi Smith.
But at an emotional press conference Monday, McQueary told CBS5 that after Gabriel disappeared, the Smiths tried to strong-arm him into giving up his child.
"When Gabriel disappeared, they said to me basically if you really care about your son and you want him back and you want Elizabeth to bring him back, than you'll sign the paperwork and she'll bring him back," said Logan McQueary.
The Smiths said they were only passing along the messages they were getting from Elizabeth. They also say they are cooperating fully with the investigation and no longer believe the adoption is possible.
"Now the father is so deeply into this that his ego would never allow him to sign papers," said Smith
But they still may have a role to play. The Smiths believe Elizabeth Johnson will tell them Gabriel's location Tuesday.
"She wants to talk to me tomorrow at 2 o'clock to see if I will help her with attorneys to gain custody of Gabriel. If she hurt the baby, I don't think she would be trying to get custody," Tammi Smith said.
If you have any information that could help investigators in this case. You are asked to call Silent Witness at 1-480-WITNESS.

Now, Gabriel's father Logan McQueary is speaking out.
She basically said, 'There is no way in hell you are ever going to see your son again,'" says McQueary. "She basically didn't want me to have him and wanted to put him up for adoption. That is what she kept saying."
Police say she threatened to harm the baby in the past. McQueary says Johnson also sent her text messages saying she killed their son.
The state of Arizona now has 15 days to pick up Johnson and return her to Arizona. Police are also looking for the car Johnson was driving: a White 1995 Oldsmobile Delta-88, with Arizona license plate AGZ4214.

Wow, I just hope like hell she didn't harm her son. She sounds like she may be bi polar with the mood swings and not on meds. I'm not a doctor so who knows?
Why didn't she simply give custody to the dad and stop this horse manure? She evidently has not a true care about the welfare of the baby.
Why do these mother's have children when they are not equipped either mentally, physically, emotionally or financially to take care of them? Get a tubal, use a condom, take the pill, don't have sex. It's just ridiculous!!!!

Possibly the adoption was for money. The adoptive couple don't sound too bright. They were begging the dad to sign adoption papers for a child that he didn't want to give up. What the hell? I doubt there was an attorney involved.by Wrapitup Today at 1:29 am Why didn't she simply give custody to the dad and stop this horse manure?

Johnson had a history of domestic violence-related incidents
“Before she left, she told me I was never going to see the baby again,” said McQueary, who has known Johnson since middle school. “I was scared when she first said it. When she told me she killed the baby, I tried not to believe the message. I didn’t want to believe it. I don’t know what makes her tick or why she would do this to me. When she had the baby, she was happy.”
Johnson also stated that the child, Gabriel Scott Johnson, was in a dumpster in a baby bag, and she described the baby as dead and blue colored. She also told McQueary that she was going to leave the United States, and she would tell him where the body was when she was gone, according to the court document.
“This has not been ruled out,” said Sgt. Steven Carbajal, a Tempe police spokesman. “But we are receiving conflicting information. We’re also hearing that she was trying to sell or give the baby up for adoption. She’s not helping us resolve that issue.”
Police also are continuing to search for Johnson’s white 1995 Oldsmobile Delta-88 with Arizona license plate AGZ4214.
Johnson had a history of domestic violence-related incidents and is in a diversion program for her actions, according to a Tempe Municipal Court spokeswoman.
A clerk at Tempe Municipal Court confirmed Monday that Elizabeth Johnson was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage in July involving an incident in which she is accused of causing $4,000 damage inside the Tempe apartment she shared with McQueary.
McQueary earlier had filed an order of protection against Johnson in Tempe Municipal Court because he said he was afraid Johnson would hurt him and Gabriel, but the order was later dismissed after McQueary tried to work things out with Johnson, McQueary stated in the court document.
In the July incident, McQueary told police Johnson tore a part a baby crib, took a knife and cut up baby clothes, McQueary’s clothes, the couch and smashed windows of the apartment and a television set. In another incident, Johnson later hid Gabriel but accused McQueary of taking him, according to a request for custody of the child McQueary filed with the Maricopa County Superior Court on Dec. 14.
The baby was found hours later at the home of one of Johnson’s friends after police conducted a search for him.
In the document McQueary wrote, “She has said several times in the past she doesn’t want the baby, has yelled and screamed at him when I would go to work, I would put him in his room, and when I would come back five hours later, he would still be in the room with no changed diaper and crying. I would ask her (Johnson) what she was doing, and she would just yell at me and say ‘shut that thing up.’”
Child Protective Services also has an open case against Johnson, investigating her for neglect of the child, according to the court document.
Johnson is being extradited from Florida to Tempe, according to Carbajal.
McQueary’s father, Frank McQueary, described the situation as very scary.
“We’re hoping she’ll come forward,” Frank McQueary said. “We need her to come forward and tell us what she’s done.”
Johnson was charged with custodial interference through a direct complaint filed by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office on Dec. 28.

Re: Tammi Smith and Elizabeth Johnson scheduled to go to trial Aug 9 to face criminal charges in the case of the missing Gabriel Johnson/ / Johnson said she killed her son Gabriel/ Audio of Elizabeth's call to Logan just released 12/14/10
such conflicting stories.....
It IS possible the mother disliked and didnt want her baby because the father IS abusive towards her. You hear stories like that all the time...usually the father is abusive to the child as well, but maybe she was 'jealous' feeling he favored the little boy over her...
I dont know, plane tickets at the last minute can be expensive. are we supposed to believe she just had that kind of money herself? i think she sold him, and i pray he is safe...matter of fact, if the family had alot of money he is probably being well cared for...
I dont know. Im torn. If the father really was abusive i kind of dont want him to have his son back either. If she sold her son to a well off decent family i kind of hope her little boy can stay there away from ALL the mess.

that sums it up..charminglane wrote:She reminds me of Casey.
but why didn't people act sooner?? why didn't the dad let that woman take the baby? it's obvious she didn't want him! how could ANYBODY in their right mind leave a baby alone for 5 FREAKEN HOURS WITH OUT A DIAPER CHANGE OR FOOD??? IMO if anything happened to this baby it's the father's fault too. sometimes we are too naive or ignorant or plain just don't care when the answers are right in front of us!

to me that just sounds like an excuse. Any mother in their right mind would love a baby no matter what.
then again she might have postpartum depression. she is sick and needs help

Someone in the family should have stepped in and taken that baby before this happened.

Why do these mother's have children when they are not equipped either mentally, physically, emotionally or financially to take care of them? Get a tubal, use a condom, take the pill, don't have sex. It's just ridiculous!!!!
you said it girlfriend! if we are "mature enough" to do the dirty, we have to be mature enough to handle a baby! any baby we give birth is our responsibility! both the father and mother..

Sorry ladies mental illness don't work that way. They don't use birth control because they don't think like a normal woman does. So what do we do as a Country to prevent this? Make all mentally ill women get sterilized? That is like trying to save the world. Impossible to do that. What we can do is increase awareness about signs of mental illness. Make laws that allow Grandparents or other family member to intervene and save the children from a life of hell. One of my biggest pet peeves is that Mental Illness is not covered well by our insurance companies. The old laws of having a person committed don't work either. This all needs to change if we want to protect innocent kids.

I think that when the mom is in the hospital with the newborn, it is up to the nursing staff to survey the parents or parent and look closely at the mothers (in particular) past medical history for any signs of mental problems.
Once that baby is handed over to the mom and is wheelchaired out the hosptial door, all bets are off.
Also, I know there are some State's that don't give grandparent's a lot of credence and some do.

BJ in OR wrote:Police are looking for a missing Arizona boy last seen here with his mother on Dec.
Jan.5th, 7:pm Car has been located abandoned in parking lot of a Motel 6 in San Antonio, Texas.
FBI and Law Enforcement are processing the vehicle at this time.

Mom: I Gave My Baby To Texas Strangers
A Tempe woman arrested in Florida on suspicion of custodial interference said she gave her 8-month-old son to a Texas couple.
Watch: Exclusive CBS 5 News Interview With Elizabeth Johnson"
In an exclusive interview with CBS 5 News from her jail cell, Elizabeth Johnson, 23, said she met the couple in San Antonio while running away from Arizona.
“They approached me and came up to me,” she said. “I was alone with the baby at the park.”
Johnson said she knows little about the couple. She said she doesn’t know their last name, address or phone number.
“I trusted them,” she said. “I believed in my heart they were good people.”
Elizabeth Johnson had not revealed the whereabouts of her baby until now.
On Monday, the boy’s father said he received a text message from Elizabeth Johnson telling him she killed their son.
Asked why she would tell Logan McQueary she had killed Gabriel, Johnson said for revenge.
“He had ruined my life,” Johnson said. “He hurt me and I wanted to hurt him and that was the only thing I could say that would hurt him.”
“I was emotionally a wreck and was completely out of my mind and just upset,” she said.
Johnson said she regrets making the statement.
“We’re human and we make mistakes,” she said. “We say things we don’t mean.”
Johnson said she has told police everything about the Texas couple who has her son. She said she isn’t concerned who has custody.
Johnson said even though she did not harm her baby, she’s not worried about his safety now.
Asked whether she’s worried her baby is dead or alive, she said, “No I’m not.”
McQueary said his ex-girlfriend approached him about giving up his parental rights to their son, saying another couple wanted to adopt him. McQueary refused Johnson's request.
Elizabeth Johnson was taken into custody Wednesday by Miami Beach police.
Johnson was scheduled to appear in Maricopa County Superior Court's Family Court in Phoenix for a Dec. 28 custodial hearing. But authorities say she failed to appear and lost custodial rights to Gabriel Johnson.
The Tempe Police Department said it has been “working around the clock” to locate him.
Tempe police Sgt. Steve Carbajal said threats were made. "At this point there's no evidence those threats have been carried out, but we're obviously concerned when we don't know where the child is."

Authorities find missing car, not missing baby
2010 The Associated Press
Jan. 5, 2010, 7:59PM
SAN ANTONIO — Authorities have found the vehicle belonging to an Arizona mother who has refused to say where her 8-month-old son is.
FBI spokesman Eric Vasys says San Antonio police and FBI agents found the vehicle outside a San Antonio motel Tuesday night and are processing the car for evidence that might point to the whereabouts of 8-month-old Gabriel Johnson. There were no obvious signs of violence.
Johnson's mother, 23-year-old Elizabeth Johnson, was arrested in Miami Beach, Fla., last week after she failed to appear for a custodial hearing in Phoenix. The baby's father told authorities the mother had threatened the child.
She has refused to say where the baby is.

Seven months ago, Tammi Peters Smith saw a young, worn-out mother at an airport during a long layover.
Elizabeth Johnson, 23, looked tired and depressed as she held her newborn son, Smith said.
"I looked at that situation and said, 'She doesn't want that baby,'" Smith said, before walking over to Johnson and asking her if she was looking for someone to adopt her child.
"She said, 'yes, but the dad won't sign the papers,'" Smith said.
Now the baby, Gabriel, is at the center of a nationwide search.
Smith said she and her husband, Jack, wanted to adopt Gabriel and that both of his parents wanted to give him up at different times, though never seemed to be on the same page about it.
Logan McQueary, 25, told reporters Monday that wasn't the case, and said he felt extorted by the family.
Smith said neither parent is fit, pointing to McQueary's past run-ins with the law, including 2004 burglary charges, to which he pleaded guilty and served nearly four and a half years probation.
"Neither of them want the baby," said Smith, who lives in North Scottsdale and owns a colon hydrotherapy practice with several locations around the Valley. "Most likely she's left him with another family she's chosen like she had chosen us."
"We were the duped family between him and her and their problems," Smith said.
Smith also she and her husband had temporary guardianship of the boy in late November and early December for about 10 to 12 days while the couple was deciding what to do.
A Tempe detective was at the Smith home when they took in Gabriel and saw paperwork on the matter, though spokesman Sgt. Steve Carbajal said it's unclear if there the documents had any authority since they weren't court-issued.
Gabriel went back to living with Johnson, and she and the boy's father broke up on Dec. 8. He left the home where they were living together, and the next day she called him at work to ask him to sign over his rights, McQueary said at the news conference Monday.
He refused and he hasn't seen Gabriel since.
Smith said she and her husband spoke to Johnson and tried to coax her to return, but had little luck. They cooperated with police, but didn't offer any information on where Gabriel might be, Carbajal said, disputing earlier reports that the couple hadn't been talking with police.

I actually worked with Elizabeth while she was pregnant at a CVS/Pharmacy. She would always complain and almost brag about how her boyfriend was on the run from the police and how they had no money. She stated, multiple times, that she did not want her baby and wish she had gotten an abortion sooner. She left CVS during her pregnancy due to medical complications. Basically, her and the father were running away from the cops (while she was pregnant, let me remind you!) and she hurt herself, so the doctor's were afraid for the baby's life. I feel disgusted that I know her.

SORRY... it's our nature to want details and because of this we sometimes have the tendency to overwhelm newbies with questions!

Welcome, tat2dmomsara!!
Was this a CVS in Arizona? Have you heard of or spoken to her since? You may want to call the police and let them know what you shared with us. Anything could help.
I read Logan's rap sheet and he was on probation from 2004 through 2007. Gabriel is only 8 mo. old so unless there are some other charges we don't know about, why would they have been on the run?
Thank you for coming here and telling us what you know. If you think of anything else, please share it. By the way, since you worked with this girl, what do you think? Do you think she sold her child? Your thoughts are more than welcome!!

All the TV channels in SA are reporting from the Motel 6 about the abandoned car. Right accross the street is a Tornado bus station.

Nite, I don't get the SA stations. I only get Austin. Do you get both??
So, she probably hopped the Greyhound to Miami thinking she would live the good life there sans her son. What a sick and twisted girl she is!!! Waterboard her!!!!

I don't get Austin channels.
I did hear that the car had been parked in the back lot of the motel for several days. And it wasn't a Motel 6 employee that report the car abandoned there. well who in the hell reported it then?
I've always said that they should allow other people besides LE to do interrogations. You, Me and Joe Blow don't have to deal with that whole Miranda thing.
We can ask the hard questions.
I by the way have a few.
*Was the baby's car seat in the car?
*Did Elizabeth have a cell phone?
*If she didn't have a job, how did she get gas for her car? money for a bus ticket?

All very good questions, Nite Spinner!!!! I would bet that yes, Elizabeth had a cell phone and No, the car seat was not in the car, and maybe she sold either food stamps or her body for money. This is all speculation. Obviously. :lightning:

Johnson's white Oldsmobile was found at a San Antonio motel Tuesday. A baby seat and other items were inside, and there were no obvious signs of violence, said FBI spokesman Eric Vasys.by Wrapitup Yesterday at 11:56 pm All very good questions, Nite Spinner!!!! I would bet that yes, Elizabeth had a cell phone and No, the car seat was not in the car.

OMG, glad noone bet me. This is like another Casey Anthony saga. She refuses to say who has the baby. I just pray that whoever has him (I do NOT think he is dead) is not some nut job and is taking good care of him; however..why wouldn't she have given them the car seat? And, this couple or person has GOT to know that they are in the wrong, have basically aided and abetted. That is why I fear she gave her child to sex offenders or crazy people. Who just takes a child?
If a young girl came up to any of you with a baby and said, "I DON'T WANT MY BABY..WILL YOU PLEASE TAKE IT." What would you do?? I know what I would do. I would first ask her why she doesn't want her baby. I would try to befriend her. I would then take the baby try to keep an eye on her and call 911.
