I think I read somewhere that LE identified and secured the landfills where trash was dumped from the areas she was in. Does anyone else remember that? I hope they did at least that much, but I agree, I think they should have searched immediately, as Wrap says, just to rule it out.

El Paso Investigator Takes On 'Baby Gabriel' Case

EL PASO, Texas -- The kidnapping case of 9-month-old Gabriel Johnson, better known as Baby Gabriel, now has an El Paso private investigator taking on the case.
J.J. Armes is searching for the now nationally known Baby Gabriel, taken by his mother, Elizabeth Johnson, from the Phoenix area to San Antonio in a custody dispute in December.
Johnson then claimed she killed the baby and dumped him the trash. San Antonio police are now scouring a landfill, but Armes isn't convinced.
"We're searching all over,” Armes said from his Lower Valley compound. “My insticts are that the baby is still is alive, because there has been no sighting of any blood or any cadaver.”
Johnson has been arrested and has since recanted her murder story. Instead she is now claiming she gave Gabriel to a couple in a San Antonio park, but has refused to say anything else.
With little faith in the San Antonio police, Logan McQuery, the baby's father has hired Armes to investigate.
"I've sent some agents out of town on some leads and they're pretty good, they're pretty believable," Armes said.
Armes said Gabriel may have been taken to Mexico, but he is investigating every possible situation.
"We're going to find them, I mean I have 40 years experience and we have 175 years experience working on this case, we'll find them one was or another," Armes said.
If you have any information that would lead to Gabriel Johnson, call your local police department.

Yes, they identified and "secured" (more like roped off) the parts of the landfill where trash was dumped from the areas she was in about 2 weeks ago. I agree, they should have checked it out right away. If that is where baby Gabriel is (and I pray it's not), he could have been laid to rest in a dignified and respectable manner instead of being left in a pile of trash.
Whatever happened to the statements that there were two ongoing side-by-side investigations going on--a missing person and homicide? I recall statements by LE they had two investigations because of the two conflicting stories, but now it doesn't sound like that was the case after all.

Withpurpose, love your avatar with Gabriel, so sweet.
About the two ongoing investigations, I believe HLN reported Sat. that there was only one investigation now, a homicide investigation.

facebookdel.icio.usbuzzdiggreddit›› Email›› PrintSAN ANTONIO, Texas -- New evidence that surfaced Sunday in the search for baby Gabriel shows there is a better chance that he may still be alive. It suggests it was Elizabeth Johnson's plan all along to adopt her baby away.
Johnson sits in a Maricopa County Jail on charges of kidnapping and custodial interference in connection with an attempted adoption and her son's disappearance.
The day started with Gabriel's father, Logan McQueary, hitting the pavement, stopping at spots Johnson was seen or captured on surveillance video.
He posted fliers and asked questions at the Subway next to her hotel, the Jack In The Box, and even a Papa Johns because Johnson's babysitter saw empty pizza boxes from the restaurant on her hotel room floor.
Everywhere he and his cousins, Lisa and Joe Peters, stopped, people listened to their story and wanted to help.
“I have three kids and I couldn’t even imagine. Good luck to you, really good luck. I’ll be praying for you all night,” said one man at the Subway where Johnson was spotted.
But the stronger clues came to the McQueary family later in the day through phone calls and emails.
“We came on this trip looking for any evidence and we’re finding a lot of it,” said Logan McQueary.
After talking to an adoption expert who helps the FBI in the world of underground adoptions, the McQueary family learned some startling connections.
The Homegate Hotel where Elizabeth stayed is well known in adoption circles. Agencies put girls up there for meetings with families and to complete paperwork.
“It just seems like it is a place that mothers go when they’re trying to give up their children,” said Lisa Peters.
The adoption expert, who didn't want to be identified, also had plenty to say about the San Antonio Six Flags.
“Often girls go to Six Flags to meet with the adoptive family. There’s a lot of people in and out there, and there’s also security there, and it’s a safe place for both the mother and the family to meet, often to bring the child, introduce the child to the family,” said Lisa Peters.
Elizabeth Johnson and Gabriel were spotted on surveillance footage outside the Six Flags on Dec. 26, the same day she took the last known photos of Gabriel in the Homegate hotel room. That was also just two days after she posted two comments on her MySpace page stating, "Where there's a will, there's a way" and "Excited to start my new life."
“I think on the 26th, she knew it was the last time she was going to see Gabriel, she took some pictures, she drove to Six Flags, somebody picked him up and she took off for Miami. And we just have to figure out who she met and where they are now,” said Lisa Peters.
The adoption expert also told the McQuearys that because of recent changes in Texas law, the state is now one of the easiest to remove parental rights from a biological father.
But despite the latest evidence, it is still possible that Elizabeth Johnson carried out her claim that she killed Gabriel and threw his body in the trash.
San Antonio police plan to search the nearby Tessman Road Landfill as early as Monday, but rain in the forecast could stall the beginning of that effort

SAN ANTONIO - The search for Gabriel Johnson, a missing Arizona baby who was last seen in San Antonio, has turned into a murder investigation. San Antonio Police Chief William McManus told News 4 WOAI on Saturday that police have officially opened up a murder case on baby Gabriel.
News 4 WOAI asked Chief McManus whether this turn in the case means police do not think Gabriel will be found alive.
Chief McManus paused before answering, “We are going to search that landfill and the question becomes why are you searching a landfill if it's a missing person case. So all hopes are that we will find the baby alive, but we are going to proceed with a murder investigation."
It’s a change in the case that is not discouraging Gabriel’s father, Logan McQueary. He arrived in San Antonio Friday night to begin his own search for his son.
"They can say whatever they want. Until they prove me wrong that Gabriel's not alive, I'm going to believe that he is alive," McQueary said.
Moments after arriving at San Antonio Int’l Airport, McQueary told News 4 WOAI he was frustrated by the pace of the investigation and was ready to confront San Antonio police officers. But those feelings changed Saturday morning after McQueary met with detectives for several hours.
"You know, walking into San Antonio I had a lot of questions in Phoenix while I was there. Why aren't they doing this? Why aren’t they doing that? But now meeting with them I think I have a better understanding and more confidence in them," McQueary said.
San Antonio police requested to speak to Gabriel's mother who was arrested in Florida but her attorney denied that request. Elizabeth Johnson's charges include kidnapping and child abuse.
Gabriel Johnson was last seen in San Antonio on December 26th. (Family of Gabriel Johnson, Associated Press) The child was last seen Dec. 26 in San Antonio with his mother, 23-year-old Elizabeth Johnson. She was arrested Dec. 30 in Florida and has been charged in Arizona with kidnapping, child abuse and custodial interference.
The case drew national attention when the child's father pleaded for his son's safe return on national TV.
The couple had been in a custody dispute when Johnson left Tempe with the baby Dec. 18.

Baby Gabriel's dad believes his son was adopted in S.A.
Inspite of all this Logan thinks Gabriel might have been adopted. Let's hope he's right and Gabriel is still alive. If so, whoever has him better come forward. This isn't a secret that can be kept forever. If more than one person knows something it's not a "secret" anymore.
Baby Gabriel's father says two locations in San Antonio where Elizabeth Johnson and Gabriel were last spot spotted lead him to believe that the baby was adopted.
Logan McQueary says the first spot is the Homegate Hotel, where Johnson stayed. The Mcqueary family says they've talked to adoption experts, who say that the hotel is a well-known location in adoption circles.
Agencies put girls up here for meetings with families.
The second clue that baby Gabriel may have been adopted is that Johnson and Gabriel were spotted on surveillance footage outside the Six Flags on one of the last days the baby was seen.
Despite these clues, the San Antonio Police Department plans to search the landnfill for the baby's body as soon as the weather cooperates.

If I was Logan I would not give up easy either. However LE did say new information has changed this from a missing person to a murder investigation. It is so confusing and I wish the media could get the story straight. Now what is not being said is if these girls that meet the families at that hotel are doing legal or illegal adoptions? Because if Gabriel was adopted it was done illegally and that could make all the difference in the information.

I agree Logan shouldnt give up because he needs to know either way, as all of us would want to know if we had a child missing out there.

They are just starting to search the landfills now? Almost two months after baby Gabriel was last seen? That will be like looking for a needle in a haystack! I can't imagine what a gruesome job that would be...

I saw a special about landfills. It's all mapped out and they can tell exactly where the garbage from any area of town on any given day has been dumped. It was amazing how much thought is given to "garbage".

Elizabeth many not have been alone in San Antonio, TX
There is strong evidence Monday that at least for one night on the run, Elizabeth Johnson was not alone with her baby Gabriel in San Antonio, Texas.
Johnson sits in a Maricopa County jail on charges of kidnapping and custodial interference in connection with her cross-country trip. Her son, Gabriel, disappeared the day after Christmas in Texas.
Tabor Morris, a pizza delivery driver at Papa John's, says he delivered food to Johnson while she was staying at the Homegate Hotel.
“She was real skittish, she kept the door closed. I think she gave me a $5 or $6 tip. Really nice lady. I think that’s why I pretty much remember her,” said Morris.
She may have soon slipped his mind if not for the flier posted in the restaurant. He produced a receipt to CBS 5 News from Dec. 21 with the name Elizabeth and her room No. 150.
“She pretty much handed me the money and didn’t let me look in the room. Didn’t let me look or anything like that. I could tell something was wrong. She was real skittish acting,” said Morris.
A second pizza order three days later may better help find Gabriel. The receipt, provided by Papa John's, also lists the name Elizabeth and room 150, but on Dec. 24, she ordered two pizzas, a medium and a large. They had a different assortment of toppings and seem to strongly suggest she was not eating alone.
The driver who delivered that order no longer works at Papa John's, but Morris said he wants to help track him down. If that second driver saw someone with Elizabeth, his testimony could help break the case.
“She’s crazy. The guy that’s looking for his kid, I understand that. That’s why I want to help him out however we can,” said Morris.
CBS 5 News passed along this new information to Gabriel's father, Logan McQueary, and he immediately called San Antonio police.
McQueary has a meeting with investigators Tuesday, and they asked him to bring the receipts.

I want to force this girl to tell the truth, if he is in that landfill for so long what will they be able to find? She stated in a text she killed him, they should charge her with murder with dp on the table for a conviction, if she did give him away maybe she will "remember" details and the baby can be found.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Police Chief William McManus says officers have begun excavating a landfill for evidence in the disappearance of an 8-month-old boy.
McManus said Tuesday that authorities "remain hopeful that baby Gabriel is alive."
The search at the landfill was expected to involve at least six days of excavating.
According to the San Antonio Express-News, debris up to 45 feet deep was examined at the Tessman Road Landfill in the 7000 block of Interstate 10. The debris was moved to a separate secure search area, where cadaver dogs and search teams will review it, McManus said.
San Antonio Fire Department hazmat crews were on hand to guard against caustic runoff, the paper reported.
The search will be conducted from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays.

Yes, lisette, I saw video of the search on national news this afternoon, complete with the big equipment there, digging, unloading scoop by scoop into dump trucks and the debris being carted away somewhere. So the digging and searching of the landfill in question has begun.

Search for baby centers on San Antonio landfill
By EVA RUTH MORAVEC
San Antonio Express-News

SAN ANTONIO — Contractors on Tuesday began excavating a landfill in search of missing Arizona baby Gabriel Johnson, who was last seen in San Antonio the weekend after Christmas.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said he expects excavators will need at least six days to remove 1.8 million cubic feet of debris from a section of the Tessman Road Landfill in the city's east side before reaching the depth in which the baby's remains could be.
McManus said they are targeting that section because it's tied to a trash container at a hotel on San Pedro Avenue, where Elizabeth Johnson, 23, claimed to have suffocated her baby, placed him in a diaper bag and disposed of his body.
Johnson spent seven days in San Antonio in December before leaving for Florida, where she was arrested. She is jailed in Arizona on charges of kidnapping, custodial interference and child abuse. She is no longer speaking to authorities but previously claimed to have given 8-month-old Gabriel to a couple in a San Antonio park.
San Antonio police have been searching for Gabriel under a missing person's case that was opened Jan. 9, McManus said, and a concurrent homicide investigation began Feb. 6.
“Let me say this, that we do remain hopeful that Baby Gabriel is alive,” McManus said.
He added that the section of the landfill currently being excavated has been cordoned off since Dec. 27, the day that Johnson allegedly sent a text message to Gabriel's father, Logan McQueary, saying she killed the boy.
“We are chasing down every lead that we've come across, and we're chasing (them) down very vigorously,” the chief said. “The San Antonio community is a very tight community, and it takes very, very personally crimes against children.
“The community will not tolerate this, the police department will not tolerate this, and we're doing everything that we can to try to track down Baby Gabriel, and hopefully we'll find that baby alive,” he said.
Once the 1.8 million cubic feet of debris has been removed from what police call the “search zone,” crews will begin searching for evidence of a homicide, McManus said. Contractors will move the debris from the search to a separate secure site at a location that police declined to disclose, and search teams with cadaver dogs will then sift through the potential evidence.
McQueary continues his own search in San Antonio, where he is retracing Johnson's steps. He has repeatedly turned down newspaper reporters' requests to be interviewed. McManus said investigators continue to update McQueary on the two cases in private meetings.
Another Scottsdale woman, Tammi Smith, 37, was arrested in connection with Gabriel's disappearance on charges of custodial interference, conspiracy to commit custodial interference and forgery. Smith had told authorities she wanted to adopt the boy.

"The first time someone shows you who they are, believe them." This statemet is so true in so many ways. I know that the world prays for this beautiful little boy to be alive. To be honest I pray for that as well. However my gut instinct and the psychologist in me feel that this little boy is no longer among us. I keep going over Elizabeth first statement and the text message she sent to the boyfriend. Her words were so cold and unnerving, no emotion or guilt. The only thing I saw in the words she wrote was a women that finally won and Logan would not have his son. All she cared about was her freedom and the fact she had control. She didn't want her son but was going to make sure that the father didn't get him. I believe the reason she texted Logan that she killed their was her way of not only hurting him but releasing herself of the guilt of what she had done to Gabriel. The inconsistentcies of her stories and the fact that she is making no effort to help in finding her son. makes me even more sure that this baby is dead. The rumours of an illegal adoption just seem unlikily to me and as much as I want to beleive it I just can't. Even if this was and illegal adoption as much news media coverage their is, that couple would have to feel very scared and unsure because someone could recognize that baby at any given moment. So with that being said, I would like to think that the couple would contact the authorities. Realizing that they could become in trouble with the law themselves. But that hasn't happened in this case, so I really don't think she gave the child away to a couple. This is just my opinion and I pray that I am wrong and Gabriel is found safe and brought back to his father.

Gabriel Johnson's Family Fears Missing Baby Was Sold in Underground Adoption
February 10, 2010 6:00 AM
Since Feb. 2, McQueary has been retracing a road trip that 8-month-old Gabriel Johnson and his mother, Elizabeth Johnson, took last December from Tempe, Ariz., to San Antonio, Texas - the last place the little boy was seen alive.
Elizabeth Johnson, 23, told a TV station she gave the child to strangers in San Antonio, allegedly told McQueary that she killed the baby and threw him in a trash bin, and hasn't told the police much of anything.

Arizona police have her locked up on charges of kidnapping, child abuse and custodial interference.
But McQueary has kept hope alive.
On Sunday, he and his family met with an adoption expert who often consults with the FBI in the world of underground adoptions, and learned some startling connections, according to CBS affiliate KPHO.

According to the expert, who asked not to be identified, The Homegate Hotel, where Elizabeth Johnson stayed in San Antonio, is well known in adoption circles. Agencies put girls up there for meetings with families and to complete paperwork, the expert said.
The last known photos of Gabriel were taken at the hotel. In one of the images, the boy is holding a prescription drug container. In another, his eyelids are eerily half closed.

On Dec. 26, the same day the photos were taken, Johnson and Gabriel were spotted on surveillance footage outside a Six Flags amusement park in San Antonio.
The expert told the McQueary family that this too fits the bill of many underground adoption he's seen.
"Often girls go to Six Flags to meet with the adoptive family. There’s a lot of people in and out there, and there’s also security there, and it’s a safe place for both the mother and the family to meet, often to bring the child, introduce the child to the family,” the expert said according to Lisa Peters, McQueary's cousin who has been accompanying him on his search.
That was also just two days after she posted two comments on her MySpace page stating, "Where there's a will, there's a way" and "Excited to start my new life."
San Antonio investigators have said that they are now classifying the case as a kidnapping homicide because it allows them to search for a dead body as well as looking for a missing person.

To me, that text to Logan was just full of spite and malice. I don't think it could have done anything to relieve any guilt she may have been feeling--JMO. She wanted to hurt him. I do think EJ is capable of doing it. However, IMO, In cahoots with TS this young woman (EJ) definitely had a plan on how she could keep Logan from getting the baby and not have to raise him herself. If she did in fact kill Gabriel, I think it was because the deal went sour or she just lost control. As far as someone identifying the baby if another couple had him, I'm not sure that'd be the case. If I had a baby that everyone was looking for, I wouldn't be out and about with that baby or having guests over and so on. If Gabriel has been illegally adopted, I expect those new parents won't be going out much for quite some time. As far as well child care, they can get that taken care of pretty easily providing very little information, especially if they pay out of pocket. And a year from now, most people are going to have forgotten all about this and the couple can safely come out of their "hiding" with him. Although I continue to hope and pray Gabriel is alive, if he's not, I hope they find his body so he can be laid to rest and his family can have some closure.

If the deal went sour do you think she just panicked once she realized there went her "cash cow", now everyone in America knew what he looked like, would be hard to have him adopted at that point.

EJ was seen in a video outside of Six Flags a place
that girls go to meet possible adoptive parents.
Apparently there is realy belief that she gave the child to a couple who promised that no one would ever know. If thats the case, then I wonder if nothing turns up at the landfill exactly what the police will eventually charge her with.

Artgal, you mean it is a well known spot for illegal adoption trade? Wonder how the girls all know to hang around there? By golly, if I gave my child to a couple I believe I would be compelled to save my sorry life (if I were her), and tell the truth, that Gabriel is alive. If the DP was on the table I think she will tell the truth, if the truth is he is alive and well and with a family. If she murdered him I hope she tells the truth to save her own life.

with your post. Just like the in Caylee Anthony case we all wanted to believe a Mother could not do that to her child. Just like in the Caylee Anthony case many people believed KC that there was this Zanny the nanny that took Caylee. Just like in the Caylee Anthony case if Gabriel was killed it was out of spite.

All I know is that if I visit Texas, I will be avoiding that Homegate hotel and Six Flags. I don't want anyone thinking they can buy my babies!
Just kidding. What really bothers me about this is that LE has never mentioned this. Logan had to start his own search and travel to Texas to learn this!

Thanks BJ for posting that info on where possible adoption meetings might take place. Illegal adoptions that is. I just saw a picture online of a smiling Gabriel and I wanted to cry. If he was adopted I hope that they love him and take care of him forever, if they arent going to turn him in - and EJ stays in prison
for a long long time.

If they have EJ at 6 Flags WITH the baby, they are keeping some things close to the vest.
What date and time was she seen at 6 Flags?
What time did she leave 6 Flags?
Did she have Gabriel with her when she left?
If not, do they have tape of who she handed him off to?
Apparently, they don't have much coverage at 6 Flags or they would NOT be searching landfills, correct?

They might also be searching landfills for other evidence besides a body, like paper receipts, phone numbers scribbled down by EJ, anything discarded that might still have some evidence attached to it. Maybe.

TerryRose,
Chief McManus sort of dropped a hint and said receipts and items from the hotel room.
How would LE know what was in the hotel room you ask?
There are a whole lot of things visible in the background of the pictures that were taken of Gabriel.

Critter, I am afraid that they will never do so (if they exist) because serious charges await them at this point in time. Would you? If doing so meant you would spend years in jail as opposed to loving a child that you have wanted and welcomed and providing a good home for him to grow up in?

I agree with you TR, I strongly doubt that if this mystery couple does exist that they would ever come forward and face the music! They know that in a couple years this baby will have no recollection of who his real NOT mom and Daddy are and will think of this couple as his parents. His looks will have changed, so they won't have to hide him as well either
Poor Logan! I hope they do find this baby alive and NOT in the landfill! :pale:

Oh my, for the first time ever, I disagree with TerryRose, a little. I think a loving couple who only wanted a child to love would surely not face serious charges. If this baby was "given" to a couple, I don't believe it would be a loving couple only interested in giving a child a good home. Would could cause a couple to pursue an underground adoption? I think there may be something underground going on here and probably involves the smiths, but I don't think it is a simple loving and innocent couple. If the scenerio TerryRose describes is accurate, yes, I would turn myself in and the child over as I think any loving and caring couple would do. jmo

Some VH legal eagles might be able to answer the question of what, if any, serious charges could await the mystery couple? What I do know is that, often times, legal adoptions are expensive and also many good people do not qualify under archaic, stringent rules, such as their ages, how big their home is, their income, etc. Love has nothing to do with these rules unfortunately and since everyone wants to adopt a baby, they usually have a very long wait, and are strongly advised to take an older child since older children are in abundant supply. The hard facts of life is what, IMO, prompts couples who desperately want to adopt a baby to go the alternate route. It has been this way for generations. JMO.

Re: Tammi Smith and Elizabeth Johnson scheduled to go to trial Aug 9 to face criminal charges in the case of the missing Gabriel Johnson/ / Johnson said she killed her son Gabriel/ Audio of Elizabeth's call to Logan just released 12/14/10
Sources have revealed to KENS 5 that when Elizabeth Johnson vacated her hotel room at the Homegate Inn & Suites in late December, she left behind all of her son's personal belongings.
But there reportedly was one item investigators could not find: a green diaper bag that belonged to Gabriel Johnson. Of course, the 8-month-old was missing too.
A joint investigation involving authorities in San Antonio and Arizona led to a portion of the Tessman Road Landfill being roped off.
Johnson reportedly sent the baby's father, Logan McQueary, a text message saying she had killed their child, placed him in a bag and put his body in a dumpster. Trash from her hotel would come to the area where San Antonio police are currently searching.
That's where sources said police are looking for a green diaper bag or suitcase that could contain the child's body.
San Antonio police have called the case both a missing person case and a capital murder investigation.
Sources said the young mother's text to Gabriel's father declared she would direct him to their child's blue body if the garbage does not take him prior to that alert.
Johnson allegedly came to San Antonio trying to elude child custody issues with McQueary. Sources said she wanted to adopt little Gabriel to Tempe, Arizona couple Jack and Tammi Smith.
KENS 5 has learned that police have evidence of communication between the Smiths and Johnson while she was in San Antonio.
According to sources, they allegedly were discussing ways to conduct an illegal adoption. But police reportedly have not been able to conclude that such an adoption ever happened.
Sources said police did find witnesses who saw Johnson shopping without Gabriel the day she abandoned her grandfather's vehicle at a south-side Motel 6.
Investigators say that's when she used a fake last name to buy a bus ticket to Miami, Florida. Sources said the child did not make the trip. Johnson was arrested on child custody charges in Florida.
Police have said the mother was uncooperative. She reportedly said Gabriel was given to a couple in a San Antonio park.
But sources said subsequent questioning of the toddler's mother revealed inconsistencies in her story. Plus, investigators allegedly believe the missing child's story garnered so much national media attention that it's peculiar that they have not received any reports of sightings of Gabriel.
As a result, investigators reportedly think the child really could be a capital murder victim and unthinkably was tossed away like garbage.

This unfortunately points to more clues that the child might have been killed. Why only the diaper bag missing? Also its possible that the adoptive couple
might have only wanted to dress the child in new clothes but then why not have a new diaper bag?
I think the evidence is piling up that there was no
couple - and that she killed the child. Maybe she was discussing it with the Smiths but it was taking longer than she liked or became too complicated. That could have spurred her to end it fast by killing Gabriel.

I have to say the above post by Artgal gave me the chills. All of his items were left behind, except for that diaper bag that she said she put him in. That cannot be accounted for? I don't like the sounds of that.

Cost to search landfill
We are learning new information about the search for a missing Texas baby.
The search for baby Gabriel at a San Antonio landfill has paused, and now we are learning the price tag for the search.
San Antonio police say the excavation at the landfill will ring up at more than $100,000.
The police department has received help from a dozen local companies who have agreed to donate time, equipment and resources to find the missing 8-month old boy who is possibly buried at the landfill.
Baby Gabriel was last seen with his mother. The boy's mother is now in police custody.

Elizabeth Johnson should be billed for all of this.....not that she has any money, but IF she ever gets out of jail, paying for the search for Gabriel should fall on her. It didn't have to be like this. All she needs to do is tell the truth.

Rain Halts Landfill Search For Baby Gabriel
http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local_news/Rain_halts_East_Side_landfill_excavation.html

Rain on Thursday halted the excavation of an East Side landfill where officials have been searching this week for evidence in the disappearance of an Arizona infant.
“The excavation has been suspended for the day because of the inclement weather,” said San Antonio Police Department spokeswoman Sandy Gutierrez. “But we hope to resume Friday.”
Police Chief William McManus said at a news conference Tuesday that the landfill was targeted because it's tied to a trash bin at a hotel on San Pedro Avenue where Elizabeth Johnson, 23, claimed to have suffocated Gabriel Johnson, placed him in a diaper bag and disposed of his body.
Police continue to investigate a separate missing person case on the 9-month-old because Johnson also claimed she gave him to a couple in a San Antonio park.
Private companies have donated more than $100,000 worth of personnel, equipment and services for the excavation, which began at the Tessman Road Landfill Tuesday. It will take several more days to remove a total of 1.8 million cubic feet of debris that officials have estimated sits atop a layer where police believe the baby's remains or evidence could be.
The particular section of the landfill has been cordoned off since Dec. 27, the day Johnson allegedly sent a text message to Gabriel's father, Logan McQueary, saying she killed the boy.
Vicky Waddy, a spokeswoman for Zachry Construction Corp., said her company's work has also temporarily halted at the site, but five employees have been operating an excavator and three dump trucks in the dig since Tuesday.
She estimated the cost of the employees' work, which includes loading dump trucks with debris and unloading the dump trucks at another section of the landfill, is $30,000. But that amount could change if rain continues to fall, complicating the operation.
“The problem isn't just the rain coming down, but whether there's a stable foundation for our excavator,” she said.
A spokesman for Yantis Co. said a crew is on standby to help police in the second phase of the landfill operation, which includes sifting through debris for evidence. That process, which costs an estimated $30,000, will begin once the landfill site has been excavated to 45 feet, police said.
Yantis employees will then use equipment, including two excavators, to move the debris to a nearby secure site, which police have declined to disclose, to allow for the arduous process of searching through the trash. Police will use search teams and cadaver dogs, McManus said.
“Right now, we're waiting for the Zachry crews to finish their part,” said Yantis spokesman Paul Basaldua. “We hope to start sometime next week, pending weather. If it continues to rain, it's harder to sift through that material because it becomes more compacted and claylike.”
