I think when nothing is found and nothing is disclosed we all become a bit frustrated and start looking at other possibilities.

lisette I remember the Dateline hour and there was a bunkbed that both boys shared. That made me wonder if there was another "weekender" or if another boy lived with them full time.

I just can't figure this one out. What "if" Terri didn't do it. Then where are we?

Remember when the little girl went missing and her stepfather was suspected of abducting her. Jaycee Duggard. He was pretty much put through the wringer.

Turns out he was innocent. So I have to look at possibilities as I hope the police are doing unless they have a whole lot more.

I don't think Desiree or Tony had anything to do with Kyron gone missing but I find it strange we know nothing about the two of them. They have managed to keep their private lives pretty private for all the exposure this case has had.

Thread #1 - Kyron Horman: Missing for 9 Months/ Desiree believes Kyron is dead/ Supporters put pressure on Terri - Page 14 Empty Kyron investigators search where DeDe gardened on 6/4

Post by Nama Sun Aug 08, 2010 9:22 pm

On Sunday, investigators looking into the disappearance of Kyron Horman spent hours searching a large property where Dede Spicher was gardening on June 4th, the day that Kyron disappeared.

Investigators know that Spicher, a good friend of Kyron's step-mother, Terri, disappeared for more than an hour that day and has not been able to fully account for her whereabouts.

While she has been cooperating more than when Kyron's parents, Kaine and Desiree Young, released a statement imploring her to cooperate, sources - including people who have spoken with investigators - saId that it is believed that she still has more to offer.

This property is at least the third connected to Spicher that has been searched as part of the investigation. Investigators have also looked at her condo and a house belonging to relatives of hers.

While KGW is not revealing the exact address, we can tell you it is a heavily wooded area. It is also just about ten minutes from Skyline Elementary where Kyron went to school and where he was last seen. On Saturday, searchers were once again looking for signs of Kyron east of the school.

KGW has reported that Investigators have spoken with people who were on the property that day and how those people described being unable to find Spicher at one point, even trying - unsuccesfully - to reach her on her cell phone.

Investigators also know that Spicher, who met Terri and Kaine Horman some seven years ago at a gym in Beaverton, has been close to Terri, even moving in with her for almost two weeks after Kaine moved out.

And, as KGW first reported last week, DeDe was one of Terri's friends who helped her by buying cell phones they thought couldn't be traced.

Calls to Spicher's lawyer have not been returned.

Searchers scour woods for Kyron clues

By Bob Heye
Sunday, August 8th, 5:21 pm

Two vans of searchers looking for clues into Kyron's disappearance are off the Germantown roads west of Skyline.

PORTLAND, Ore. - We caught sight of searchers out for a second day along two roads near Skyline Boulevard.

Search teams spent all day Sunday combing areas off Northwest Germantown Road. The terrain there is difficult, and it gets even steeper and brushier the farther west you go.

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office would only confirm that the search is related to the Kyron Horman case - and that crews are following up on tips related to the missing boy.

Neighbors tell us this is the second full day of searching in the area - some of it in areas so steep that teams had to rappel down cliff faces in order to cover the ground completely.

They say officers also went door-to-door interviewing neighbors with many of the same questions asked after the search first began.

Indeed, neighbors say teams of searchers went through this same area shortly after Kyron went missing … during the first wave of massive searches.

This weekend, however, sources have told KATU News that the searchers are following tips based on information from Dede Spicher, a friend of Kyron's stepmother Terri Horman.

"All they did is they came to the door and said they were with search and rescue this morning and wanted permission to go on our land to check the streams," said
neighborhood resident Judith Emerson.

Some crews were using search dogs to go through forested areas along Germantown Road.

There is no indication yet whether the searches found anything significant that might be tied to Kyron's disappearance.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Crews returned to northwest Portlandon Saturday in the search for missing 7-year-old Kyron Horman.
FOX 12 has confirmed that a tip from DeDe Spicher -- a friend of Kyron's stepmother Terri Horman -- is what sparked the search.
Search teams were seen near a field off Cornelius Pass Road, about one mile south of Skyline School. Kyron was last seen at the school June 4 and his stepmother was the last person known to have seen him.
Crews were also seen in a field off Cornell Road on Sunday.

Thread #1 - Kyron Horman: Missing for 9 Months/ Desiree believes Kyron is dead/ Supporters put pressure on Terri - Page 14 Empty Reported Spottings of Kyron Horman Look-a-Likes

Post by Nama Sun Aug 08, 2010 10:55 pm

I'm not going to post a picture of the little boy here, but yesterday the Police were at the home of my son's girlfriend's family because someone had reported that Kyron was spotted in playing in the yard. Her brother looks just like Kyron (same haircut and wears glasses) and the family lives in Roseburg......the same town where Terri Horman is staying now with her family.....BJ

With all of Portland, Oregon looking for missing boy Kyron Horman, inclduing 21 billboards around town featuring his face, there are bound to be reported sightings of look-a-likes. And that is the problem facing several area families.

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office has had four reports of children who resemble Kyron, including one last week involving a woman and a boy spotted boarding a train bound for Portland International Airport.

Portland police and airport authorities caught up with the woman and determined the child wasn't Kyron, said Lt. Mary Lindstrand, a sheriff's office spokeswoman.

"That wasn't the first time she'd been stopped," Lindstrand said.

Don Nys was so alarmed by his son's resemblance to Kyron that he started carrying his son's school identification card in his wallet, just in case. Strangers have approached him, saying his son looked like Kyron.

"When you go into public, you get paranoid," Nys said. "What are people thinking? Are they thinking I have a missing child with me?"

This phenomenon is not restricted to Portland, or even the United States. Tarin Elliot, 9, lives in Vancouver, Canada, and he looks so much like Kyron, he's being stopped there. A couple of women spotted Tarin in a grocery store, and started whispering to each other about whether it was Kyron.

"It's not Kyron," Tarin's mother told the women, who apologized for any trouble they'd caused.

Tarin's father has had similar problems. A security guard at a Wal-Mart followed them into the men's room.

"Is that your boy?" the guard asked Tarin's father.

"Yes," said Marcus Elliott. "That's my boy. It's not (Kyron)."

Lindstrand said she hopes the families of Kyron look-alikes understand if they're approached by police. "It's safer to ask than not to ask," she said. "Better safe than sorry."

2nd person seen in truck while Terri at Kyron's school

by Colin Miner and Frank Mungeam, KGW.com Staff
Posted on August 9, 2010 at 4:56 PM
PORTLAND, Ore. -- KGW has learned that investigators are trying to determine the identity of a person who was seen sitting in the truck Terri Horman was driving the day Kyron Horman disappeared.
According to several sources in the Skyline community, including people who have spoken with investigators, the person was seen by at least two witnesses while Terri was in the school with Kyron.
Investigators have gone through Terri's cell phone and email records trying to establish who the person was.
“It's really significant if someone else was in there---and people are indicating it wasn't a child,” said C.W. Jensen, a former Portland Police Homicide Detective.
While Terri Horman has not been charged or even officially identified as a person of interest in the case, investigators have clearly focused attention on her, even telling Kaine Horman and others that they had probable cause to believe that she was responsible for Kyron's disappearance.
Investigators have also been focusing on the activities of Terri's friend, Dede Spicher the day that Kyron disappeared. On Sunday, KGW reported that investigators have been searching the property where Spicher was gardening on June 4. More: Home where DeDe gardened searched
Also, KGW has learned that at least three friends of Terri's, including DeDe Spicher, bought prepaid cell phones in the days following Kyron's disappearance, some using fake names. More: Friends faked names, bought pre-paid phones
According to these sources in the community, including people who have spoken with investigators, it is not known if Spicher was the one seen in the truck.

Acquaintance: Terri Horman upset before Kyron vanished

Story Published: Aug 9, 2010 at 5:17 PM PDT Story Updated: Aug 9, 2010 at 5:33 PM PDT

PORTLAND, Ore. - An acquaintance of Terri Horman, who asked to remain anonymous, said Monday Terri was very upset in the weeks before Kyron vanished because she said her husband, Kaine, was making her teenage son move out of the couple’s Portland home.

According to the acquaintance, Terri Horman came to a 24-Hour Fitness a month to two months before Kyron disappeared and said Terri was furious, and kept complaining to anyone who would listen, that Kaine was allegedly making her teenage son move out.

Terri’s son did move out of the home in March.

Friends, who worked out with Terri Horman at that 24-Hour Fitness, testified before a grand jury Monday.

According to sources, the friends were not extremely close to Terri but they were close enough that Terri often confided in them with issues from her home.

Three grand jury witnesses declined to speak with reporters outside the Multnomah County Courthouse Monday. But all three, according to sources, are members of that 24-Hour Fitness.

Meanwhile, more searches near Skyline School where Kyron disappeared on June 4, were conducted over the weekend.

The three sites that were searched all have connections to another friend of Terri Horman, DeDe Spicher, according to sources.

Lawyer and former Multnomah County sheriff’s captain, Bruce McCain, said the searchers could very well be looking for one of at least three cell phones friends purchased for Terri Horman under fictitious names.

“They’re looking for physical evidence,” McCain said. “Either something physically associated with Kyron himself, any kind of tools or implements that may have been involved in his disappearance - criminally, and also possibly a discarded cell phone that they’d like to retrieve and gather all the data from that,” McCain said.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the searches over the weekend were tied to the Kyron Horman case but it would not say what searchers were looking for.

Also, sources at the courthouse will not confirm the alleged rift between Terri Horman and Kaine or whether that is a possible motive.

No one in this case, including Terri Horman, has been named a suspect or person of interest. Police have not made any arrests.

In a press release Monday afternoon, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said it plans to hold a news conference on Wednesday, Aug. 11 at 11 a.m. to release details in the case in an effort to get the public’s help in the case. KATU.com plans to stream it live.

Deputies Plan To Release Details In Kyron Case
POSTED: 4:45 pm PDT August 9, 2010
UPDATED: 5:50 pm PDT August 9, 2010
PORTLAND, Ore. -- The lead agency investigating the disappearance of Kyron Horman said it will release details in an effort to gather more information from the public.
Multnomah County spokeswoman Lt. Mary Lindstrand said the sheriff's office will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Brookshill Historical Church in northwest Portland.
"Captain (Jason) Gates, as well as a member of the investigative team, will be present to provide information on the case to solicit the public's help and answer questions," deputies said. "No details will be released prior to the press conference on Wednesday."
Over the weekend, crews set up a base near Kyron's school and searched fields along Cornell Road. FOX 12 confirmed that a tip from DeDe Spicher -- a friend of Kyron's stepmother Terri Horman -- is what sparked the search of at least one area.
Deputies said Monday the search was related to the investigation, but did not provide details about what areas were covered or what prompted the search.
Kyron was last seen by his stepmother a few days before his last day of class at Skyline Elementary School, according to the sheriff's office.
At least two of Horman's friends have been called before a Portland grand jury in the past weeks, including Spicher. Spicher was subpoenaed two weeks ago but, according to her lawyer, did not testify.
Kyron's birth parents, Kaine Horman and Desiree Young, have stated they believe Spicher has been protecting Terri Horman instead of cooperating with investigators.
Last week, Chelsea Aleshire also received a grand jury subpoena. Aleshire said she spoke with Terri Horman the day Kyron disappeared, but that the conversation took place before Terri Horman knew the 7-year-old had vanished. She said the two women have not spoken since.
Kaine Horman filed a restraining order against his estranged wife in late June on grounds that police gave him probable cause to believe she tried to hire someone to kill him and was involved in Kyron's disappearance.
He was granted custody of the couple's toddler and moved back into the family's home in mid-July. Terri Horman has since relocated to Roseburg.
Authorities haven't named any suspects or people of interest in the case.

I suspected early on that Terri got rid of Kyron because she was angry that James had moved out...Her perception was that it was Kaine's fault...In one of the interviews, however, Kaine said that Terri and James had more trouble than he and James did...That is his perception...He must have known if Terri was that upset about James moving out unless he is totally dense! I don't think that he has been totally honest about the tensions in that house...maybe he can't be honest with himself because he has to face the fact that he didn't take seriously how severe the feelings were and what they led to for poor little Kyron.

Interesting about the second person in the truck that day. It seems to me LE should have just come out and asked Terri Horman who that was by now. Maybe they did and that led them to question her friend De De? Something so simple as that could be cleared up so easily that it is hard to understand people like this who won't give out the facts for the sake of finding a little boy.

Thread #1 - Kyron Horman: Missing for 9 Months/ Desiree believes Kyron is dead/ Supporters put pressure on Terri - Page 14 Empty The Kyron Files

Post by Nama Mon Aug 09, 2010 11:23 pm

The 14 most important people and things to emerge from the Kyron Horman investigation.

Exactly two months have passed since 7-year-old Kyron Horman disappeared and put Portland at the center of a storm of attention.

After the largest search operation in Oregon history, a sprawling criminal investigation that’s pursued nearly 4,000 leads, and 16 press conferences by law enforcement, there remains no sign of the boy or any indication of an imminent arrest.

But there is one person who possesses two of the three elements investigators seek in making a criminal charge—means, opportunity and motive.

Stepmother Terri Moulton Horman, a former bodybuilder, had the means. And as the last person known to have seen Kyron before he vanished from Skyline School on June 4, she had the opportunity.

A motive is far less clear. In fact, it’s the reason for the national obsession with this case. For all the criticism of the story’s tabloid nature, there is nothing puerile about the desire to comprehend this crime and solve the mystery of what happened to this child. The attempt to do so leads us into some very dark places.

In an effort to understand and connect the growing list of players in this case, we’ve compiled profiles of the primary characters and their significance. Nine weeks after his disappearance, his family and authorities can only hope that continued focus on Kyron’s story will help to close this case.

The Father
Kaine Horman
Age: 36
Residence: Northwest Sheltered Nook Road

Thread #1 - Kyron Horman: Missing for 9 Months/ Desiree believes Kyron is dead/ Supporters put pressure on Terri - Page 14 Lede1

An Intel engineer with an analytical mind and awkward social skills, Kaine Horman has been through the unimaginable. First losing his son, then seeking to divorce his wife after learning investigators believe that she allegedly tried to hire someone to kill him. Kaine has said he’s racked with guilt that a person he trusted, Terri Moulton Horman, is possibly involved in his son’s disappearance. What he doesn’t address directly is what he feels about striking up a romance with Terri when his then-wife, Desiree Young, was eight months’ pregnant with Kyron. He does say he and Desiree had already agreed to separate although they were still living together. Nevertheless, the media have portrayed him sympathetically as a tortured father now single-mindedly focused on finding his son. When he’s not being briefed by investigators, consulting with his divorce lawyer, and caring for his 20-month-old daughter, Kiara, he squeezes in time for the media and a few hours of work from home. He also may have found ways of blowing off steam—neighbors report they’ve heard gunfire coming from the property for hours on end.

The Stepmom
Terri Moulton Horman
Age: 40
Residence: Parents’ house in Roseburg

Thread #1 - Kyron Horman: Missing for 9 Months/ Desiree believes Kyron is dead/ Supporters put pressure on Terri - Page 14 Lede2

If it turns out Terri Horman is not responsible for Kyron’s disappearance, she’ll be this decade’s Richard Jewell—the security guard at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics wrongly accused of planting a pipe bomb. Terri hasn’t been charged, but the red-haired mother of two is clearly at the center of the criminal probe. A California native, Terri was adopted and raised in Roseburg, where she opened a short-lived fast-food restaurant called Chubby’s after high school. She settled in the Portland area and earned a master’s degree in education from Pacific University, holding down jobs in restaurants and substitute teaching. She was twice divorced when she met Kaine around 2003. At least one of her prior marriages was marred by Terri having an affair. Kaine says he’s unaware whether Terri was sleeping around during their marriage—but he does believe Terri started an affair just days after Kaine filed for divorce.

Her Facebook entries caused the rumor mill to focus early on Terri. Some were suspicious when she uploaded pictures of Kyron almost immediately after leaving his school. Others thought it was odd for her to post an update about “hitting the gym” at the height of the search. Her Facebook posts written before Kyron disappeared reveal a woman torn between her own desires and the demands of domestic life. She writes about having to give up weightlifting because of her family. She was worried about “hitting 40” in March. Her No. 1 birthday wish was liposuction.

Terri has made no public statements since Kyron’s disappearance, and surely won’t now that she’s retained renowned criminal-defense lawyer Stephen Houze. The pressure on her has been immense. She did foil a sting operation set up to elicit a confession that she tried to hire a hit on her husband. But since Kaine and daughter Kiara left the house June 26, she appears to have unraveled and began making desperate moves—like publicly lying to reporters and allegedly plotting to kidnap Kiara from the gym where Kaine works out. With widespread reports that she failed two polygraph tests and can’t assemble a solid story of what she did the day Kyron disappeared, she continues to be the focus of intense speculation.

The Mother
Desiree Young
Age: 38
Residence: Medford

Thread #1 - Kyron Horman: Missing for 9 Months/ Desiree believes Kyron is dead/ Supporters put pressure on Terri - Page 14 Lede3

A mother who gave up custody of her son five years ago for health reasons and now faces losing him forever, Desiree Young appears to be the most tragic figure in this story after Kyron himself. Desiree’s breakdowns at press conferences have been the most heartbreaking public moments since Kyron went missing. She has also lashed out at those she and Kaine see as hindering the investigation, ramping up public anger at Terri and her friends.

Desiree’s backstory adds to the pathos. When the boy was 2 years old, Desiree suffered kidney failure she says was a result of taking a medication that was not FDA-approved—what medication, she won’t say. She went to Canada for treatment, but again has declined to give specifics. When she returned to Oregon, she tried to regain custody of Kyron and an older son from her first marriage. She was denied by Kaine and the other father, and never fought their decision in court. Desiree is now seeing a therapist to help deal with Kyron’s disappearance and has returned to work as an accountant at Lithia Motors in Medford.

The Stepfather
Tony Young
Age: 43
Residence: Medford
Not much attention has been paid to Tony Young, Desiree’s third husband and a detective with the Medford Police Department. Taciturn in public, he stays in the background while Kaine and Desiree take the stage during news conferences, or sits quietly in a corner when they’re interviewed. But having a cop close by has benefited the family, with Tony working as a bridge to investigators—helping determine when the family releases information they believe will help solve the case. He and Desiree met five years ago when she was working at a bank in Medford and reported a possible fraud. Tony was assigned the fraud case, and the two hit it off. He previously worked for the Oregon Department of Corrections and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

The Grandparents
Larry and Carol Moulton
Ages: 73 and 69
Residence: Roseburg
One of the questions to emerge is how Terri came up with the retainer she allegedly paid to hire Houze as her attorney. In court filings July 26, Kaine claimed to have learned “in a written communication to a third party” that Terri paid Houze $350,000, an amount Terri has claimed in court documents is incorrect. (As previously reported in WW, Houze has quoted at least one other potential client a retainer as high as $250,000.) Whatever the amount, Kaine says some people in his circle suspect the money came from Terri’s adoptive parents, Larry and Carol Moulton—both retired schoolteachers from Roseburg whom Terri moved back in with on July 16. The Moultons own a house in Roseburg worth $175,500, but the Douglas County Clerk’s Office said last week the last mortgage on the property was taken out in 2008. The Moultons have repeatedly declined to comment.

The Friend
DeDe Spicher
Age: 43
Residence: Tualatin
The drama around Kyron’s disappearance became almost operatic with the addition of DeDe Spicher, thrust onto the public stage as Terri’s loyal and, allegedly, conniving friend. An organic gardener and self-described fitness junkie who lives in a Tualatin condo, Spicher (sounds like “spicer”) met Kaine and Terri five years ago at 24 Hour Fitness in Beaverton. After Kaine left his house in June, Spicher briefly moved in with Terri. On July 22, Kaine and Desiree said Spicher had refused to cooperate with investigators, told others not to cooperate, and provided Terri with advice “not in the best interests” of Kyron. She was subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury July 26 but was not called to testify—a tactic longtime investigators say is used to rattle uncooperative witnesses. The key question for investigators is where DeDe was the day Kyron disappeared. The Oregonian reported she was working as a gardener at a Northwest Portland home and left the premises for about an hour and a half, but nothing else is publicly known about her movements that day.

The Love Interest
Michael Cook
Age: 37
Residence: Aloha

Thread #1 - Kyron Horman: Missing for 9 Months/ Desiree believes Kyron is dead/ Supporters put pressure on Terri - Page 14 Lede4

Michael Cook was a buddy of Kaine’s at Shorecrest High School in Shoreline, Wash., where they both played receiver on the football team. Cook gained his unwelcome 15 seconds of fame when Kaine accused him of carrying on an affair with Terri after Kyron’s disappearance—including “sexting” and exchanging explicit photos. Within days Internet snoops had dug up a bitter and embarrassing account by Cook’s ex-wife detailing their breakup before Michael met Terri, including allegations of cocaine use and sleeping around. The story was posted on Shannon Cook’s website, stoptoxicrelationships.com, as one of the reasons she’s qualified to advise other women in her job as a professional life coach. Shannon Cook took the blog down after Michael became a public figure in the Kyron case, but the text has been republished on multiple true-crime websites. The allegations of an affair with Terri came out in Kaine’s divorce filings. Michael Cook has acknowledged sexting Terri after Kaine left the house but denied they’d had sex. If Kaine’s allegations are true, Michael Cook’s only relevance to the case may be in establishing a pattern of impulsive behavior on Terri’s part.

The Landscaper
????
On July 4, The Oregonian published its big break in the Kyron story by revealing that Terri allegedly tried to hire a landscaper to kill Kaine about six months before Kyron disappeared. For the first time, the story supplied a possible motive for Kyron’s disappearance—that Terri wanted Kaine dead or, failing that, to hurt him by taking his son. Kaine himself subscribes to this view. The O didn’t reveal the name of the landscaper, but said he was cooperating with investigators, including a failed sting operation. On June 26, the same day Kaine left his house, the landscaper and an undercover cop posing as his buddy visited Terri at home. The story goes that the landscaper demanded $10,000 or said he’d tell police about the murder-for-hire plot. The trap failed—Terri instead called 911 to report a threat. Blinkoncrime.com, a website with no indication of its authorship, posted a story July 14 that said the landscaper was Rudy Sanchez, owner of R.S. Landscape Maintenance, a business registered to a P.O. box in Canby. Using address searches and property records, national and local TV crews descended on two rental houses in Milwaukie and Canby, but Sanchez wasn’t living at either address. If the murder-for-hire plot is true, then whoever the landscaper is, he now must live with the possibility that if he’d reported Terri six months ago, Kyron might never have disappeared.

The Neighbors
Angela Davis
Age: 34
Residence: Up the street from the Horman house
Angela Davis has endured more than most neighbors around the Horman house on dead-end Northwest Sheltered Nook Road. Residents put up with weeks of TV crews camped out on the road, taping every passing car, and occasional beeping late at night from news trucks backing up in neighborhood driveways. Davis, meanwhile, has a pile of human feces on her property where the cameramen who staked out the Hormans relieved themselves under her tree. Next to the turds and used toilet paper sits a pile of rotting grapefruit in a discarded plastic bag. But during the search for Kyron, some of her neighbors freaked out for a different reason. Many are growing marijuana on their isolated, densely wooded properties, and were spooked when search teams arrived. Deputies assured the nervous neighbors they didn’t care about the pot.

The Obsessed
Holly Delants
Age: 37
Residence: Littleton, Colo.

Thread #1 - Kyron Horman: Missing for 9 Months/ Desiree believes Kyron is dead/ Supporters put pressure on Terri - Page 14 Lede5

Holly Delants knows where Kyron is. In the mind of this mother of four from Littleton, Colo., he’s in a basement somewhere. His glasses have been removed to prevent his escape. But he’s plotting his getaway while replaying in his mind old episodes of his stepmom’s favorite show, CSI. “I’ve dreamt about it, too. He was parked in a car by himself, and I disconnected the batteries so they couldn’t leave,” Delants tells WW. She’s never been to Oregon or met Kyron’s family. But like hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people worldwide, Delants feels a connection to the case. “I’m completely obsessed,” she says. Now she follows every detail from 1,000 miles away, reading the news off the computer each night to her own 7-year-old son. She checks her cell phone constantly for updates, stays up past midnight Googling for news on the case and has plastered Denver suburbs with Kyron posters. She also wrote Kaine and Desiree a letter that’s laminated on the Wall of Hope set up for Kyron on a fence in front of Skyline School. “I can only imagine your pain and anger right now and how much your arms ache to hold him. And I know that is an actual real physical pain in your heart and your arms,” she wrote. “That is enough to bring me to tears every day.”

The Reporter
Elaine Aradillas
Age: 34
Place of residence: Los Angeles (locally, Hillsboro)
Every major national and local news outlet has dumped resources into the Kyron story—The Oregonian has seven reporters working the Kyron beat. But some of the best reporting has come from Elaine Aradillas, a 2004 Columbia Journalism School grad working for People magazine. Aradillas quoted Terri’s dad June 28 saying publicly for the first time that his daughter was at the center of the criminal investigation. Aradillas was the first reporter given access inside the Horman house, interviewing Kaine at his kitchen table. There were several aspects to Aradillas’ approach that set her apart. Instead of staying in downtown Portland hotels with other reporters, she bunked for a month in Hillsboro to be closer to places the Hormans worked, exercised and socialized in Washington County.

The CoatTailer
Bruce McCain
Age: 55
Residence: Northeast Portland

Thread #1 - Kyron Horman: Missing for 9 Months/ Desiree believes Kyron is dead/ Supporters put pressure on Terri - Page 14 Lede6

Nine weeks ago, Bruce McCain was a recently exiled captain from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office. After doubling as both the official agency spokesman and personal attorney for former Sheriff Bernie Giusto, it was clear McCain had no future in the agency after Giusto’s ouster amid an ethics scandal in 2008. So McCain—a staunch conservative who represented the Oregon Citizens Alliance in its efforts to petition for a statewide anti-gay-rights law in 1992—retired from the sheriff’s office into relative obscurity rebuilding his law practice. But since Kyron’s disappearance, McCain has jumped to national renown as an analyst for nearly every national outlet covering the story. Local TV has glommed onto McCain as well, even leading a nightly broadcast with the news that McCain believes investigators have sufficient evidence to make an indictment. More than anything else, McCain’s rise to prominence points to the dearth of real information about the case. Even McCain acknowledges the absurdity of it all. “How pathetic is that? I don’t work there anymore,” he says. Now the requests for interviews keep coming, and McCain spends up to 12 hours a day, starting at 4 am, in TV studios. McCain says he hasn’t been paid for the work but now hopes to somehow parlay his media shtick into a steady paycheck.

“I am not an armchair detective trying to solve this case,” he says. “It’s like any retiree with the prospect of a second career.”

Cell Phones
Cell phones have played a crucial role in the Kyron investigation. As first reported in WW, law enforcement sources say pings from Terri’s phone indicate she may have been on Sauvie Island the day Kyron disappeared—a location reportedly at odds with her own account of her movements that day. When they’re turned on, phones bounce a signal, or ping, off the nearest tower—even a specific side of that tower—allowing cops to isolate a person within a certain radius. Even better for detectives is when a subject carries a more advanced device like a GPS-enabled iPhone—then a subject’s movement can be pinpointed to specific coordinates. Investigators have not disclosed the type of phone Terri used. Records of calls and texts from Terri’s phone have also helped law enforcement in its efforts to pressure her. Investigators have provided information from Terri’s phone to Kaine—including evidence she was carrying on an affair, passed sealed court documents to Michael Cook and allegedly had paid her lawyer, Stephen Houze, $350,000. Kaine used all of that info to gain leverage in his divorce proceedings against Terri.
The Investigators
Typically in large-scale or long-term criminal investigations, there’s one person in charge. For example, in 2002, when Washington, D.C., suffered three weeks of sustained terror during the Beltway sniper attacks, the sprawling investigation had one clear leader and one public face. Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose (former head of the Portland Police Bureau) stood behind a lectern during daily news conferences to update the national TV audience. Fitting Portland’s more self-effacing style, the Kyron investigation has no publicly recognized spokesperson. Multnomah County Sheriff Dan Staton’s shop is nominally in charge of the investigation, but the painfully shy sheriff rarely takes the microphone, preferring to delegate speaking duties to a rotating cadre of command staff. The lead investigator, Sheriff’s Sgt. Lee Gosson, has never even spoken publicly on the case. Despite its low-key style and the fact it’s a relatively small agency, insiders say any suspicion that MCSO could mishandle the case is groundless—it has help from other members of the East County Major Crimes Team, which includes some of the most seasoned detectives in the region. The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office is also involved in steering the investigation; the person in that office who puts in the most hours on the case is Chief Deputy District Attorney Norm Frink, who likewise has made no public appearances.
Behind the scenes, it’s clear law enforcement has settled on a highly unusual strategy of relying on the family itself to release public information and bring pressure on those accused of being less than cooperative with investigators. First it was Terri who was singled out by Kaine and Desiree in news conferences, then DeDe Spicher and other friends. Kaine says investigators have never asked him outright to release any specific information, but when the family feels that doing so might help solve the case, they ask permission. Although they haven’t consulted lawyers of their own, they don’t fear any legal repercussions. “We haven’t done anything that’s exposed ourselves,” Desiree says. “We’ve been very safe about it.”

This comes at the same time that a Multnomah County grand jury continues to meet, with a 9-year-old classmate of Kyron's being the latest to appear. The mother of the boy said she was not allowed inside and did not ask him about the secret proceeding. Her son and Kyron were scheduled to perform together in the school talent show the afternoon of his disappearance.

This is the first that I had heard about Kyron and another child performing together at the talent show (supposed to).

BJ, thanks for this interesting update on the key "players" in this on-going drama! Although, I had to laugh at the above quote (TMI - too much information)! I never thought about what the cameramen/reporters would do about their toiletries, but... now I know!! :lol!:

On a more serious note, the main character in this "drama" is missing: Kyron. I am continuing to hope & pray that soon he will be found!

BJ you are the very "bestest"! Invaluable...

I read the whole thing and a lot of questions answered.

Desiree does have a son from a previous marriage and she is an accountant. I always thought she might be an educated woman with a good position somewhere.

I was thinking after I finished reading could it be that Terri and Dede were in a "relationship" more than friendship?

Thread #1 - Kyron Horman: Missing for 9 Months/ Desiree believes Kyron is dead/ Supporters put pressure on Terri - Page 14 Empty E-mails: Stepmom sensed suspicion on her day after disappearance

Post by Nama Tue Aug 10, 2010 10:27 am

Long before the alleged murder-for-hire plot and sexting affairs, it seems Terri Moulton Horman knew suspicions settled on her, according to e-mails written by Horman and obtained by KATU News.

“They are blaming me in the blogs. I just want to scream,” she wrote in one e-mail to a KATU News source the day after her stepson, Kyron Horman vanished from Skyline School during a science fair. Investigators say Terri Horman was the last person to see Kyron.

“The teacher thought I said I was going to take Kyron with Kitty for a doctor’s appt.,” she wrote on June 5, 2010. “I said I was going to look at other exhibits - how do you mess that up? His coat and backpack were still at school. I left the school at 9 and he was seen with a man ‘chaperone’ and 2 girls after I left. There were no men on the chaperone list. That and it was highly chaotic - had to been 300 people running around - no coordination ...”

The reference to her daughter’s doctor visit not mentioned again in a follow-up e-mail sent later that day:

"I didn't just drop him off, I spent time with him, took pictures and he was in safe hands I thought as I watched him walk down the hall.

“Kids saw him after I left. Teacher put him as absent at 10am. Someplace between 9-10 is when we think it happened.

“I have a receipt showing I was checking out at Fred Meyer 7 miles away at 9:12am. I went to another FM looking for meds for Kitty they didn't have at the first FM. Then I was trying to get Kitty to sleep in the truck for a few minutes, but no go, so off to the gym at 11:20. Out at 12:20. Home at 12:45. Kaine home at 2. Bus at 3:30. That was my day - they keep asking me. Now on my 5th interview with them ..."

Horman went on to talk about Kyron’s recent behavior.

"The past 2 weeks he's been acting really weird. Staring off into space. Can't remember anything. Walks into the room and then back out, stopping to stare and then move on. The doc thinks that he is having mini seizures and I made an appt on Thursday for next Friday to have him checked out."

That contradicts what multiple sources have told KATU News. In the days before the science fair, Terri informed Kyron’s teacher he had the appointment that day, June 4, which is why no one expected he would be in class and was marked absent.

Meanwhile on Monday, an acquaintance of Terri Horman said Terri was very upset the weeks before Kyron vanished because she said her husband, Kaine, was making her teenage son move out of the couple’s home.

Also on Monday, friends of Terri who worked out with her at 24-Hour Fitness testified before a grand jury.

According to sources, the friends were not extremely close to Terri but they were close enough that Terri often confided in them with issues from her home.

The Oregonian reported on Monday that investigators are trying to learn if another adult was sitting in the white pickup truck that Terri Horman drove to Skyline School on the day Kyron disappeared.

The newspaper reports the person may have been in the truck while Terri was with Kyron at the science fair.

Lt. Mary Lindstrand, spokeswoman for the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, said Monday night she cannot comment on details of an open investigation.

In a press release Monday afternoon, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said it plans to hold a news conference on Wednesday, Aug. 11 at 11 a.m. to release details in the case in an effort to get the public’s help in the case. KATU.com plans to stream it live.

Thread #1 - Kyron Horman: Missing for 9 Months/ Desiree believes Kyron is dead/ Supporters put pressure on Terri - Page 14 Empty Terri writes about Kyron's recent behavior

Post by Nama Tue Aug 10, 2010 1:23 pm

Terri Moulton Horman claims Kyron Horman was seen with a male chaperone and two girls after she left Skyline School on June 4, the morning the boy disappeared.

In personal emails obtained by KATU, Moulton Horman vents to an unidentified person about being targeted by bloggers who suspect she played a role in Kyron's disappearance. "I just want to scream."

The emails were written June 5. She details her schedule on the day of Kyron's disappearance, saying she went to two Fred Meyer stores, then headed to the gym for an hour. She claims she was home by 12:45 p.m.

"Kaine home at 2. Bus at 3:30," she writes. Then, in an apparent reference to her police interviews, she writes, "That was my day -- they keep asking me. Now on my fifth interview with them."

Moulton Horman also writes about Kyron's recent behavior, saying the boy had been "acting really weird" in the previous two weeks.

"Staring off into space," she writes. "Can't remember anything. Walks into the room and then back out, stopping to stare and then move on. The doc thinks that he is having mini seizures and I made an appt on Thursday for next Friday to have him checked out."

Interesting reading about Kyron the days leading up to his disapperance. Was she giving him something?

Did she call Desiree and inform Kaine of Kyrons strange behavior?

This case just gets more intense as days go by.

Kyron police flier shows photos of Spicher, asks questions

by Teresa Blackman and Colin Miner, kgw.com staff
Posted on August 10, 2010 at 12:54 PM
Updated today at 4:36 PM
PORTLAND – Police are circulating a new flier as part of the investigation into the disappearance of Kyron Horman and this time it has photos of his step-mom’s close friend, DeDe Spicher.
The police flier shows three photos of Spicher and asks, “Did you see DeDe Spicher anywhere in the area on June 4, 2010?”
It also contains more photos of Kyron’s step-mother, Terri Moulton Horman and her white truck, as well as questions about both.
The fliers were handed out to people who live near Skyline Elementary School, where Kyron was last seen on June 4.
A previous police flier featured Terri, but this was the first time investigators have zeroed in on Spicher in this way.
Sources within the community, including people who have spoken with investigators, have told KGW that Spicher was gardening at a home near Skyline Elementary School when Kyron vanished. The sources also said that Spicher left the area where she was gardening at 10 a.m. and was unaccounted for until 1 p.m., despite efforts to reach her by cell phone.
In addition, on Monday KGW learned that at least two people told police that they saw a second person with Terri in her truck on the day she took him to school and he vanished.

Meanwhile, the grand jury continues to subpoena people to testify about Kyron's disappearance. Sources told KGW that the investigation has been especially difficult because Terri told different people different things, which has created some confusion.
For instance, the sources said that while Terri told some friends that her now-estranged husband, Kaine forced her teen son, James to move out of their house, the opposite was actually true. The sources told KGW that back in March, it was Terri who sent her son to live with her parents, not Kaine. They said the decision was made, in part, so Terri's son could be closer to his father.

Thread #1 - Kyron Horman: Missing for 9 Months/ Desiree believes Kyron is dead/ Supporters put pressure on Terri - Page 14 100810_horman_flier_405

Investigators working on the Kyron Horman case released a new flier Tuesday that asks residents near Kyron's elementary school if they saw his stepmother, Terri Horman, and her close friend, DeDe Spicher the day he disappeared.

The two-page flier includes pictures of Horman, Spicher and the white pickup truck Horman was driving on June 4 the day Kyron vanished, and in it police ask residents if they saw the two or the pickup between the hours of 9:45 a.m. and 1 p.m. that day.

Former Portland police detective C.W. Jensen said investigators in this case are obviously trying to establish a connection between Horman and Spicher.

“They’ve told us through the family that they thought DeDe Spicher was linked to Terri Horman, and of course Terri Horman is linked to the disappearance,” Jensen said. “I think this is a real solid way to get that information to the community and say if you didn’t hear what we were saying before, if you saw DeDe Spicher, we want to know about it.”

Neither DeDe Spicher nor Terri Horman have been named suspects in Kyron’s disappearance and no arrests have been made.

The grand jury continued to hear testimony in the case Tuesday. Two women who work at a Starbucks Horman allegedly visited the morning Kyron disappeared are currently testifying. They have been doing do for more than two hours.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office plans to hold a news conference Wednesday at 11 p.m. to release certain details in the case and again ask for the public’s help in the investigation. KATU.com plans to stream it live.

Just watched the press conference...LE seemed awfully nervous and stumbled on words a lot...Hope that just means that they are uncomfortable in front of the cameras and not bumbling in their investigation.
It did sound like they have information from a witness that they would like confirmation on from other witnesses about where the truck was parked at school that morning...It seems like it might have been moved from one location to another...In the pictures it seemed that one of the locations might have been a little road that went close to one of the exits...LE refused to answer the question if that was the reason they were interested in that location...Oh well, not very enlightening, but I do think that they are being very meticulous in the investigation...Also, LE said again that they have no evidence that Kyron is no longer alive, but I have serious doubts about that...

Thread #1 - Kyron Horman: Missing for 9 Months/ Desiree believes Kyron is dead/ Supporters put pressure on Terri - Page 14 Empty Sheriff's office: Did you see Terri at Fred Meyer June 4?

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office held a press conference Wednesday morning revealing questions they still have into the case of missing 7-year-old Kyron Horman.

They are looking for witnesses who saw the white truck in the photos on or near Northwest Springville Road, Skyline Road, Germantown Road, Northwest Old Germantown Road and Newbury Road on the morning of Friday, June 4. They also are looking for anyone who may have seen Kyron's stepmother, Terri Horman, or the white truck at a Hillsboro or Beaverton Fred Meyer store that day.

A spokesperson said at least one witness has come forward providing the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office with information involving the truck at those locations, and the sheriff's office is looking for more witnesses.

They have a major crime team working on Kyron's case full-time throughout the week. He did not give a time line for when he thinks the investigation could be complete.

We have posted details of the press conference, in real time, on KATU.com's Twitter page.

"We don't have any evidence that Kyron is not alive," said Capt. Jason Gates of the Multnomah County sheriff's department. "We do not have any evidence that suggests that."

The tip line for this case is (503) 261-2847. There is a reward of up to $50,000 for tips leading to Kyron's recovery.

Other than the truck, I didn't really feel that we learned anything new. I was hoping for an arrest or something compelling.

side note: That pic with the white truck: the area is beautiful. BJ, how far or close do you live in relation to the area they are talking about?

LE has nothing - thats the problem. Unless they can find a body or someone can testify to something really damaging they cant arrest her. Isnt it amazing what you can get away with now days?

I just had a thought: Terri says that after she dropped Kyron off at school, she went to two Fred Meyer stores & then drove around with her young daughter trying to get her to sleep. However, I don't recall her mentioning her daughter when she dropped Kyron off at school. Did she bring her in with her, or leave her in the truck? Just curious...

I live about 20 miles from where Kyron went missing. When I was still working I was in and out of those two Fred Meyer stores all the time. I wonder why did she go to both?

BJ on JMV show they said Terri went to one FM store and could not get what she wanted so she went to another one. I think it was something for the little daughters ear ache.

I was thinking after this press conference. I can't remember who I saw at the grocery store yesterday. Or who parked by us at church on Sunday.
So how in the heck are people going to remember a white truck from two months ago.

I am sure if anybody knew anything they have called it in by now. Surely they have camera surviellence from those stores. They are huge.

I just don't know about this case. I think LE is working very hard but I have to agree that I don't think they have anything and they are trying to develope something.

Even JMV said tonight this case beats the Casey Anthony case.

Well at the very least it ranks right up there with the Casey Anthony case. I am sad that LE has nothing. LE has tried hard to solve this bizarre case. I have not given up hope quite yet. Kyron needs to be found soon. It took 6 months to find Caylee so I can't give up on him being found. I don't think it will be alive.

I have to agree that the LE on this case have worked their butts off. How bizarre is this one. I bet they scratch their heads too. But I am amazed at how hard they are working this case.

I have to sigh and think about Morgan. If VSP would have worked as hard as this Oregan unit maybe they would have found Morgans killer by now.

Sorry I drifted off.

Thread #1 - Kyron Horman: Missing for 9 Months/ Desiree believes Kyron is dead/ Supporters put pressure on Terri - Page 14 Empty Terri Horman e-mail provides insight into family tensions

Post by Nama Thu Aug 12, 2010 3:45 am

Two months before Kyron Horman vanished, his stepmother, Terri Moulton Horman, sent an e-mail to a KATU News source regarding her biological son that provides new insight into the tension that may have been brewing in the Horman household.

Throughout the two-and-a-half month search for Kyron, his older stepbrother, James Moulton, has stayed out of the spotlight. In March, James went to live in Roseburg, but the reason why depends on who is asked.

It seems his mother, Terri Horman, has told different people different things and sources say it has added to the confusion.

One version - in Horman’s own words - was recently forwarded to KATU News.

“I had my son go to live with my parents so he would be happy - went from D’s to straight A’s within one month of being away from Kaine,” she wrote in an April 6 e-mail.

That’s consistent with what James’ father, Ron Tarver, told Willamette Week, adding the 16-year-old had been acting out and butting heads with his stepfather. But Kaine Horman told The Oregonian their relationship was typical and that Terri and her son were the ones who didn’t get along. Kaine said he was often the mitigator between the two of them.

But that’s not what Terri’s friend from 24-Hour Fitness, who testified before the grand jury Monday, said they heard. In the weeks before Kyron disappeared, that person said Terri was upset, telling the friend her husband forced her son to move out.

It’s statements like that that former Portland police detective C.W. Jensen says investigators will be interested in.

“People want to know what would be the motive for someone to do something to a child like this,” Jensen said. “And what we’ve seen in the past in cases like this where someone hurts a child, they’re doing it to get back at their spouse.”

Sources at the courthouse will not confirm whether they’re looking at this alleged rift between Terri and Kaine as a motive for Kyron’s disappearance.

E-mails to James’ father and to Kaine Horman have not yet been returned.

Investigators have not named any suspects or persons of interest in the disappearance of Kyron, and they have not made any arrests.

In other developments in the case Wednesday, investigators held a news conference and asked for witnesses to talk to them who may have seen the Horman family’s white Ford F250 pickup truck on the morning of Kyron’s disappearance.

They said they want to know if someone saw the pickup parked directly in front of Skyline School - on Skyline Road - and also a second location up the gravel road in front of the school about 60 feet from Skyline Road between 8:15 a.m. and 8:45 a.m.

Additionally, they’re hoping to talk with people who saw the truck at the Fred Meyer in Hillsboro on Imbrie Drive around 9 a.m. and at the Fred Meyer on Walker Road in Beaverton at 10 a.m.

After that they said there are specific areas they believe the truck may have traveled.

“We’re looking for witnesses who observed the white truck we’ve been talking about on or near Springville Road, Skyline Road, between Springville and Newberry to include Germantown and Old Germantown,” said Rod Underhill, Multnomah County’s chief deputy district attorney.

The grand jury looking into the disappearance of Kyron had Wednesday afternoon off after hearing other cases in the morning. They should start questioning other witnesses Thursday.

I'm not understanding this. Did Terri send an email to someone at KATU or did someone forward her emails to someone at KATU?

Thread #1 - Kyron Horman: Missing for 9 Months/ Desiree believes Kyron is dead/ Supporters put pressure on Terri - Page 14 Empty Attorney: DeDe Spicher cooperating with police

Post by Nama Thu Aug 12, 2010 4:02 am

Terri Horman’s friend, DeDe Spicher, is cooperating with the police and is telling them the truth, her attorney Chad Stavley said Wednesday outside the Multnomah County Courthouse while working on an unrelated case.

The lead prosecutor heading the Kyron investigation said he is still trying to work with Spicher through her attorney but said he did not want to comment on whether he believes she is telling investigators everything.

“According to her lawyer she’s cooperating and yet within days of that statement she appears side by side on a Terri Horman quasi-wanted poster,” McCain, Bruce McCain, a former Multnomah County sheriff’s captain and current attorney, said.

While Spicher and Horman have not been named suspects in the disappearance of Kyron, they both have been questioned over and over about what they did the morning the 7-year-old vanished.

“This is going to be up to the district attorney to look at DeDe Spicher and figure out what her criminal culpability is in this whole affair and decide, is she worth giving up in order to get someone else?” McCain said.

By giving up, McCain means forcing Spicher to testify and give up her right to silence. So far she has not given one word of testimony to the grand jury investigating Kyron’s disappearance.

“DeDe Spicher will not testify before the grand jury now without a grant of immunity from the lead prosecutor,” McCain said. “That’s becoming more and more clear as each day goes by.”
If Spicher is forced to testify to the grand jury she will be granted immunity.

So DeDe is not testifying? Doesn't she have to? No wonder her picture is on that poster. I find it amazing that an innocent woman would not do everything possible to help find a missing little boy. Unless she is guilty of something???

My other thought is this. Can they call James as a witness before the grand jury? I know he is 16 but if they are looking for motive I would think it important to ask him why he left the house??? Seems both parents told different stories.

If DeDe won't testify without immunity, she MUST be involved in this somehow! In cases like this, I am all for waterboarding or whatever it takes to get the truth...when a child has been abducted or harmed, those that have info should be FORCED to tell what they know!!
