Casey Anthony Trial - The Aftermath - Page 8 Empty 2 Casey Anthony convictions set aside on double jeopardy

Post by Wrapitup Fri Jan 25, 2013 9:13 pm

5:05p.m. EST January 25, 2013

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A Florida appellate court on Friday set aside two of the four convictions Casey Anthony faced for lying to detectives during the investigation into her missing 2-year-old daughter.

Judges on the 5th District Court of Appeals agreed with Anthony's attorneys that two of the charges constituted double jeopardy, or being convicted or punished more than once for the same crime.

"We cannot conclude that the Legislature intended to authorize separate punishment for each false statement made during a single interview," the judges said in their ruling.

Anthony was acquitted of killing Caylee in 2011. Jurors convicted her of four counts of lying to detectives, and her attorneys appealed those convictions. Anthony was sentenced to time served for the misdemeanors.

She was sentenced to a year of probation after her release from jail for an unrelated case. Her whereabouts have been kept secret since she was released from state supervision last year.

Jeff Ashton, one of the prosecutors who tried Anthony and who was recently elected State Attorney in the Orlando area, said in a statement that he expected the case would be considered closed once the trial court drops the two counts.

Jurors determined that Anthony lied when she told detectives that she worked at Universal Studios, that she had left Caylee with a babysitter who kidnapped the girl, that she had told two friends about her daughter's disappearance and that she had received a phone call from Caylee.

The appeals judges ruled that the trial court was correct to allow Anthony's statements to detectives to be used during her murder trial. Anthony's attorneys had argued that she was in police custody at the time and hadn't been read her Miranda rights. They also had argued that Anthony should have been convicted of only a single count of lying because of the double jeopardy concern.

But the judges said there was a break in time between two interviews Anthony had with detectives.

"Where there is a sufficient temporal break between two alleged criminal acts so as to have allowed a defendant time to pause, reflect and form a new criminal intent, a separate criminal episode will have occurred," the judges said.

Casey Anthony Trial - The Aftermath - Page 8 Empty Two of four Casey Anthony convictions thrown out; she vows to 'keep fighting'

Post by Wrapitup Fri Jan 25, 2013 9:36 pm

By Mark Morgenstein, CNN
updated 10:28 PM EST, Fri January 25, 2013

(CNN) -- One of the most infamous defendants in U.S. trials of recent years took two big steps Friday toward clearing her name, and she vowed to "keep fighting."

Florida's 5th District Court of Appeal threw out two of Casey Anthony's four convictions of lying to authorities as they investigated the disappearance of Anthony's 2-year-old daughter, Caylee.

The appeals judges agreed with Anthony's argument that the multiple convictions amounted to double jeopardy. But the judges upheld the other two convictions.

In an internationally publicized and emotionally charged case, Anthony was tried in 2011 and acquitted of murder charges in the death of Caylee.

The child was last seen June 16, 2008, but was not reported missing until July 15, 2008, when Casey Anthony's mother tracked her daughter down and demanded answers regarding Caylee's whereabouts. Investigators searched for the child for five months, eventually finding Caylee's skeletal remains in woods less than a mile from her grandparents' Orlando home.

While she was acquitted in the death of her young daughter, Anthony was convicted of the four counts of lying to authorities. Those charges arose from statements Anthony made on July 16, 2008, to Orange County Detective Yuri Melich, who was investigating the disappearance of Caylee.

According to Friday's court filing, the appeals judges rejected Anthony's claim that statements she made before being read her Miranda rights should not have been allowed in the trial. And they rejected her argument that the state statute she was convicted of violating is unconstitutionally vague.

Anthony's lawyer, Cheney Mason, said when he called his client to share the ruling that two of the four convictions had been overturned, she said, "We keep fighting."

Anthony could appeal the remaining two convictions to the Florida Supreme Court next.

When questioned early in the investigation, Casey Anthony admitted to police that she hadn't seen Caylee for more than 30 days, and on July 16, 2008, she was arrested on suspicion of child neglect, filing false official statements and obstructing a criminal investigation. At that time, she made the statements to Melich, which led to her convictions.

After nearly three years of legal maneuvers, Anthony's capital murder trial began on May 24, 2011.

Prosecutors alleged that she killed Caylee by using chloroform and covering her nose and mouth with duct tape, and that she put her body in the trunk of her car before dumping it in the woods.

Defense attorney Jose Baez argued that Caylee drowned in the Anthony family pool on June 16, 2008, and that Casey Anthony and her father, George, covered up the death.

On July 5, 2011, a jury found Anthony not guilty of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and aggravated manslaughter of a child, while convicting her on the four "false information" counts.

Anthony was sentenced to four years in jail, to be served consecutively. But with her time in jail as she awaited trial counting against the jail terms, she was released 10 days after her sentencing, on July 17. Even though she exited shortly after midnight, about 1,000 people jeered her as police guards and Baez escorted her to a waiting SUV and drove away quickly.

Anthony still faces a defamation lawsuit from Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez, of nearby Kissimmee, Florida.
During Anthony's disputed July 16, 2008, statements to Melich, she said the last time she had seen her daughter was when she dropped Caylee off at Gonzalez's apartment.

Gonzalez filed suit in September 2008, claiming that Anthony ruined her reputation.

Last April, a judge ruled that the suit needed to go to trial by jury and denied Gonzalez's request for a summary judgment.

In appeals court, Casey Anthony wins -- and loses
By Graham Winch

updated 2:12 PM EST, Fri January 25, 2013

Casey Anthony was found not guilty in the death of her daughter on July 5, 2011

She appealed four convictions related to lying to police
'We keep fighting,' she tells her attorney

A Florida appeals court on Friday upheld two of Casey Anthony’s convictions for lying to law enforcement. But she did get what she wanted on the other two, which the court struck down, ruling that they constituted double jeopardy.

Appealing four convictions related to the police investigation into her daughter’s death, Anthony essentially got a split verdict in her latest court case.

In July 2011, a jury acquitted Anthony of all the charges related to her child's death, but convicted her on four counts of lying to law enforcement. She was sentenced to four years. With credit for the time she served before and during her trial, she was released from jail later that month.

Anthony's attorneys appealed the convictions based on the double jeopardy clause of the U.S. Constitution, and whether Anthony was in police custody and was never read her Miranda rights before she made misleading comments to investigators.

The double jeopardy clause of the Fifth Amendment prevents the government from prosecuting someone for the same crime more than once. The appellate court agreed that the double jeopardy clause should eliminate two of her convictions. But on the other two, the court says the lying convictions stand, because Anthony was in police custody.

“We have no difficulty concluding that Appellant was not in custody at the time she gave a recorded statement to Detective Melich at the Anthony residence on the morning of July 16, 2008. First, Anthony was not summoned by law enforcement officers for questioning; rather the officers went to the Anthony residence in response to 911 calls. Second, the interview took place in a spare bedroom at the Anthony residence, not in the potentially coercive environment of a sheriff’s office,” the appeals court order reads.

Anthony’s attorney, Cheney Mason tells In Session correspondent Jean Casarez that when he called Anthony to tell her about the ruling, she was grateful that two of the convictions were overturned. She also agreed with her attorney to keep fighting.

Mason says he will discuss their next legal move with attorney Lisabeth Fryer, who was also on Anthony’s defense team in her criminal trial. Mason says he has concerns about what he calls “factual inaccuracies” in the appellate court ruling.

In Session's legal experts say Anthony's next step will likely be to ask the appellate court for a rehearing.

Thought nothing more could shock me about her but I'll be damned. No way did I think she would win this. She must think Cheney Mason is a god! The ONLY thing this does for her is it helps her criminal record. That's it.They can appeal till the cow's come home but those cow's left the barn years ago. my 2 cents

Casey Anthony Trial - The Aftermath - Page 8 Empty Re: Casey Anthony Trial - The Aftermath

Post by Wrapitup Fri Jan 25, 2013 11:13 pm

By Amy Pavuk, Orlando Sentinel
6:39 p.m. EST, January 25, 2013

A Florida appeals court has thrown out two of the four convictions that Casey Anthony faced for lying to law-enforcement during the investigation into her daughter's disappearance in 2008.

During her 2011 trial, Anthony was acquitted of murder and other serious charges in Caylee's death, but jurors convicted her of four misdemeanor counts of lying to law-enforcement.

One of the issues in the appeal was whether Anthony should have been charged with four separate counts of lying to law-enforcement when she told detectives what happened to 2-year-old Caylee.

Anthony's attorneys argued that double jeopardy principles precluded her from being convicted for more than a single violation, because her various lies constituted a single offense.

The state argued that each of Anthony's false statements constituted a separate offense, and so there was no violation of double jeopardy.

On Friday, the 5th District Court of Appeal ruled that it rejected both parties' arguments.

The appeals court found that Anthony could properly be convicted of two counts of providing false information to a law-enforcement officer.

The court said the four false statements were made by Anthony during her interview with Orange County Sheriff's Detective Yuri Melich at her family's home.

Two of the lies were repeated to Melich in a later interview at Universal Studios, where Anthony claimed she worked and took detectives.

"In light of the significant temporal break between Appellant's two interviews with Detective Melich, we determine that each interview in which false information was given (or repeated) constituted a separate criminal episode," the appeal court ruled.

But of the Anthony defense's two main arguments, the appeal court rejected one: That Anthony was under arrest when she lied to authorities searching for her daughter in 2008.

Though she had briefly been handcuffed and put into a Sheriff's Office vehicle, "we conclude that a reasonable person in [Anthony]'s position would not believe 'that his or her freedom was curtailed to a degree associated with actual arrest,'" the panel ruled.

In a statement issued in response to the appeal court's ruling, State Attorney Jeff Ashton said:
"We are pleased that they have affirmed the ruling of Judge Perry that the deputies of the Orange County Sheriff acted properly during their interactions with Ms. Anthony. We understand and respect the ruling of the court in connection with the multiple false statements made by Ms. Anthony."

The resolution of Anthony's criminal appeal is also notable to Zenaida Gonzalez, the Kissimmee woman suing Anthony for defamation.

Anthony has avoided questioning in the defamation case by citing her right against self-incrimination during the criminal appeal.

"This is significant because she is no longer able to avoid answering our questions by asserting her fifth amendment privilege. Meaning, she will be compelled to testify at trial," said Gonzalez's attorney Matt Morgan. "We look forward to getting answers to questions we have had since the summer of 2008. The wheels of justice grind slowly but exceedingly fine."

Jose Baez discusses Jodi Arias case with HLN’s Dr. Drew

posted by halboedeker on January, 25 2013 11:36 AM

Coming Monday on Dr. Drew Pinsky’s HLN show: Jose Baez will analyze the Jodi Arias case and explain what he thinks the defense must do to win.

“Dr. Drew on Call” airs at 9 p.m. Monday-Wednesday.

Arias is charged with murder in the 2008 shooting and stabbing of former boyfriend Travis Alexander.

Baez was Casey Anthony’s attorney when she was acquitted of murder in the 2008 death of her daughter, Caylee.

On Friday, the 5th District Court of Appeal tossed two of Anthony’s convictions for lying to police when they were investigating Caylee’s disappearance. It was the top story on noon newscasts. WFTV-Channel 9’s Kathi Belich reported that lawyers for Zenaida Gonzalez will push to question Anthony under oath. “Casey can no longer take the Fifth and refuse to answer their questions because she can no longer use the argument that answering their questions couldaffect her appeal,” Belich said. Gonzalez is suing Anthony for defamation.

WKMG-Channel 6’s Mike DeForest explained that the court found that Anthony’s lies ”were not four separate lies, as prosecutors believed, but they were not one, single, continuous lie, either, as the defense argued.”

On “In Session” Friday, Beth Karas asked whether Jodi Arias or Casey Anthony was a better liar. “Certainly both of them have a flair for the dramatic and a flair for fantasy,” criminal defense attorney Joey Jackson said. He added that the Anthony case didn’t have the same compelling evidence because Caylee’s body was found so late. Arias “has so much to overcome,” Jackson said.

“Jose Baez did a great job of keeping Casey Anthony away from any media. No interviews,” Karas said. “It’s coming back to haunt Jodi Arias.”

In an interview earlier this week, Baez told me he was limiting his TV analysis.

“I’m not sure how much it helps your business,” Baez told me. “To be able to give intelligent opinions, you have to really follow a case. I have to think it would upset some of my clients if I was out there following somebody else’s case.”

I also asked Baez how good an interview Casey Anthony would be.

“I think she’s a fascinating young woman,” Baez said. “I think a lot of people would be very surprised how intelligent and articulate she is. She has her flaws like everyone else, some might say even more so. But I think there’s a reason everyone is fascinated with her, and I don’t think it’s just because of some of the facts in the case. I think there’s more to Casey than what a lot of people speculate.”
BS I do not think so kick

Casey Anthony Trial - The Aftermath - Page 8 Empty Casey Anthony declares bankruptcy; talks exclusively to CBS 5

Post by Wrapitup Sat Jan 26, 2013 8:08 pm

By Adam Longo

Casey Anthony, the young Florida mother acquitted of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, filed for bankruptcy protection late Friday night in Florida.

This move brings all of Anthony's civil cases currently under way in Florida state court to a complete halt.

"This is the next step towards closure for me," said Anthony in a phone conversation Friday evening.

Anthony is listed as a defendant in three civil suits in Orange County, FL. The most notable of those being the suit brought by a woman named Zenaida Gonzalez. Gonzalez claims Anthony defamed her when Anthony told Orange County Sheriff's Deputies in July 2008 that a fictitious nanny named "Zenaida Fernandez Gonzalez" kidnapped her daughter Caylee.

The Gonzalez lawsuit, brought on behalf of the Orlando-based Morgan and Morgan law firm seeks unspecified damages.

"She needs closure in this matter in order to move on with her life," said Anthony's civil attorney, Charles Greene.

In a brief conversation with Anthony on Friday night, she told CBS 5 she was hopeful the Gonzalez case would have been behind her at this point.

The case was originally scheduled to go to trial earlier this month, but attorneys for Gonzalez were granted a continuance by the judge. No new trial date has been set.

"These are the things holding me back," said Anthony. "This is the key for me to move forward."

Shortly before the phone conversation with Anthony, Greene was adamant that Anthony would not discuss any of the details surrounding her open legal cases.

The bankruptcy was filed in the Middle District of Florida because Anthony has lived somewhere in central Florida for 180 days. Her parents' address is listed as her home address, though Greene says that she is not living with them. He says that address was listed because it was her most recent permanent address.

CBS 5 broke the story in September that Anthony had moved out of Florida, but Greene says she left only for a short time and then returned because of logistic and financial reasons.

The publication of this story marks the first time Anthony has spoken with a news reporter on the record since her daughter's death in 2008.

Despite a ruling from Florida's 5th District Court of Appeals, Anthony's 5th Amendment protections against self-incrimination still apply because her criminal team has yet to decide if they will file for a rehearing or appeal the outstanding issues to the Florida Supreme Court.

The appeals court Friday tossed out two of the four misdemeanor convictions against Anthony. She was convicted in July 2011 of four counts of lying to law enforcement.

"This (bankruptcy filing) has nothing to do with yesterday's decision by the 5th Circuit (Court of Appeals)," said Greene. "This document took weeks to prepare. Casey's legal team has deliberated over this since the trial was continued, and even before then." BS

The decision to file for bankruptcy does not mean Anthony's state court legal issues go away immediately. Attorneys for Zenaida Gonzalez - and others making claims against Anthony - would have to prove to a federal judge the damages they seek are "nondischargeable," meaning she would owe money despite the bankruptcy filing.

Additionally, according to the bankruptcy documents filed, the possible financial claims against Anthony include:

$500,000 – Attorney Jose Baez

$60,505 – Florida Department of Law Enforcement

$68,540 – Internal Revenue Service

$10,283 – Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation

$145,660 – Orange County Sheriff's Office

Anthony's total assets, according to the 60-page filing are listed at less than $1,100 and her liabilities total more than $792,119.

"All the civil cases and people making potential claims have put her (Casey) in a position where bankruptcy is the only option," says Greene.

The bankruptcy documents list nearly 100 names and organizations that could potentially pursue claims against Anthony. Many of the names included are the defense experts who testified on her behalf during her murder trial.

"The public doesn't know all the people who have come out of the crawl spaces attempting to make claims against Casey," said Greene. "There are other lawsuits, other potential claims and her freedom is restricted."

Those individuals and organizations listed in the bankruptcy document would have to file a claim in federal court in order to get money from Casey Anthony.

Ultimately, that means a bankruptcy judge could be the person who decides the merits of the civil cases against Anthony.

"Casey hoped the (Zenaida Gonzalez) civil case would be over in January. This has been an ongoing battle for close to five years," said Greene. "Emotionally and physically, she can't go on for another year. She needs a clean slate from a financial perspective."

Anthony tells CBS 5 that although she values the close relationship she has with her attorneys, she does not like to be "joined at the hip" with them. She described her legal advisors to be "like family" to her.

"She (Casey) feels it's unfair for this process to drag on. We were ready to go to trial on Jan. 2, and there's no new trial date. She wanted be vindicated in the civil (Gonzalez) case," said Greene.

Anthony will be required to give sworn testimony in the bankruptcy proceedings, but Greene says the scope of questioning is limited to financial matters.

Greene says not to expect any surprises.

"There are no contracts, no movie or book deals," says Greene.

The goal for anyone going through bankruptcy proceedings is to give a person a "fresh start." The process from start to finish could take 90 to 120 days, or perhaps longer, depending on the number of people who bring claims against Anthony.

Casey Anthony files for bankruptcy, calling it a 'step towards closure'

By Desiree Stennett, Orlando Sentinel
8:19 p.m. EST, January 26, 2013

Casey Anthony, facing a mountain of debt and three civil lawsuits related to the disappearance of her daughter in 2008, filed for bankruptcy protection in Orlando late Friday.

Anthony owes nearly $800,000 but only has $1,084, according to a petition filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Florida.

"This is the next step towards closure for me," Anthony, 26, told a Phoenix TV station late Friday.

Anthony is named as a defendant in a lawsuit filed by Zenaida Gonzalez, a Kissimmee woman who is suing her for defamation.

Matt Morgan, the attorney representing Gonzalez, speculated that Anthony's latest move is an attempt to delay the defamation suit. That won't happen, he pledged.

"This most recent filing appears to be yet another calculated delay tactic. We are not deterred and will stay the course," Morgan said Saturday.

Anthony told detectives in 2008 that her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Marie, was kidnapped by a baby sitter named Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez.

Detectives said no such nanny existed, and Gonzalez eventually filed suit against Anthony.

During Anthony's murder trial, defense attorney José Baez said Anthony fabricated the story about "Zanny the nanny" and that Caylee accidentally drowned in the family's pool.

Anthony was found not guilty in July 2011 of murdering Caylee, aggravated child abuse and aggravated manslaughter.

Jurors convicted Anthony of four counts of lying to law enforcement. But the 5th District Court of Appeal in Daytona Beach tossed two of those convictions on Friday.

Roy Kronk, the former meter reader who found Caylee's body, is also suing Anthony, saying his name was severely damaged when Anthony's attorneys cast him as a possible killer after he found Caylee's remains. BS

A search ground called Texas EquuSearch is also suing Anthong, saying it spent more than $100,000 searching for a child who was never abducted or missing.

The petition lists her parents' home in east Orange County as her address. But a Phoenix TV station quoted her attorney as saying she doesn't live there. That attorney couldn't be reached Saturday.

The bulk of Anthony's debt – about $500,000 – is owed to Baez. ROFLMAO She also listed these other debts:

•$145,660.21 to the Orange County Sheriff's Office

•$68,540 to the Internal Revenue Service

•$61,505 Florida Department of Law Enforcement

•$10,283.90 to the Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation

Casey Anthony Trial - The Aftermath - Page 8 Empty Casey Anthony files for bankruptcy as she vows to 'keep fighting' legal issues

Post by Wrapitup Sun Jan 27, 2013 4:44 pm

By AnneClaire Stapleton and Holly Yan, CNN
updated 6:45 AM EST, Sun January 27, 2013

(CNN) -- Casey Anthony's fate keeps changing.

Two years ago, her murder trial for the death of her toddler riveted the country, ending with Anthony's dramatic acquittal. But she was convicted on four counts of lying to authorities.

On Friday, an appeals court threw out two of those convictions.

Now, the 26-year-old has filed for bankruptcy, citing almost $800,000 in liabilities.

And her legal struggles are far from over.

Bankruptcy motive questioned
Anthony sought Chapter 7 protection in a federal court in Tampa on Friday, soon after the appeals court ruling.
Such a filing is meant to allow one to do away with most existing debts and make a fresh start financially.
In the documents, Anthony says she owes almost $800,000 to about 80 creditors, and she has no income.
She is also defending herself against several civil lawsuits, including a defamation suit from Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez, who claims Anthony ruined her reputation.

In 2008, Anthony told an investigator the last time she saw her 2-year-old daughter Caylee was when she dropped Caylee off at Gonzalez's apartment.

Gonzalez's attorney, Matt Morgan, told CNN affiliate Central Florida News 13 he believes the bankruptcy filing is an attempt to postpone the case.
"This most recent filing appears to be yet another calculated delay tactic," Morgan said. "We are not deterred and will stay the course."

But an attorney for Anthony told the affiliate his client is distraught that she can't pay her legal fees.
"To some extent she feels, she feels bad BS that she's having to have all these legal services provided to her and she is unable to compensate anyone," Andy Chmelir said. "So she wants closure more than anything else."

What she has and what she owes
Anthony listed about $1,000 in personal property, according to court documents obtained by News 13. The listed property values include:
2 Casey Anthony convictions tossed Attorney: Casey Anthony will be there Casey Anthony: Missed evidence?
- Cash on hand: $474
- Furniture and laptop: $200
- Jewelry: $200
- Clothing and accessories: $100
The documents also list people that might have a claim against Anthony, which includes her mother and consultants that helped in her criminal case, News 13 reported.
Claims listed in the filing include:
- Jose Baez, the lead defense attorney during Anthony's trial: $500,000
- Orange County Sheriff's Office: $145,660.21
- Internal Revenue Service: $68,540
- Cindy and George Anthony, her parents: Unknown amounts

The filing came the same day Florida's 5th District Court of Appeal threw out two of Anthony's four convictions of lying to authorities as they investigated the disappearance of Caylee.

The appeals judges agreed with Anthony's argument that the multiple convictions amounted to double jeopardy. But the judges upheld the other two convictions.

According to Friday's court filing, the appeals judges rejected Anthony's claim that statements she made before being read her Miranda rights should not have been allowed in the trial. And they rejected her argument that the state statute she was convicted of violating is unconstitutionally vague.

Attorney Cheney Mason said when he called his client to share the ruling that two of the four convictions had been overturned, Anthony said, "We keep fighting."

Anthony could appeal the remaining two convictions to the Florida Supreme Court next.

Caylee Anthony's death and the emotional trial
In an internationally publicized case, Anthony was tried in 2011 and acquitted of murder charges in the death of Caylee.

The child was last seen June 16, 2008, but was not reported missing until July 15, 2008, when Casey Anthony's mother tracked her daughter down and demanded answers about Caylee's whereabouts.

Investigators searched for the child for five months, eventually finding Caylee's skeletal remains in woods less than a mile from her grandparents' Orlando home.

When questioned early in the investigation, Casey Anthony admitted to police that she hadn't seen Caylee for more than 30 days, and on July 16, 2008, she was arrested on suspicion of child neglect, filing false official statements and obstructing a criminal investigation.

After almost three years of legal maneuvers, Anthony's capital murder trial began on May 24, 2011.

But with her time in jail as she awaited trial counting against the jail terms, she was released 10 days after her sentencing.

Casey Anthony Trial - The Aftermath - Page 8 Empty Casey Anthony: How did reporter get bankruptcy story?

Post by Wrapitup Sun Jan 27, 2013 4:54 pm

posted by halboedeker on January, 26 2013 10:31 PM

In breaking the news that Casey Anthony had filed for bankruptcy, Adam Longo highlighted that it was “the first time Anthony has spoken with a news reporter on the record since her daughter’s death in 2008.”

Longo also broke the news in September that Anthony had left Florida, although her time out of state was brief.

The Anthony camp obviously feels comfortable with Longo, who reported for WKMG-Channel 6 and later Central Florida News 13. He now works at KPHO, the CBS station in Phoenix. The Anthony team continues to reach out to him on the national story. (He will be featured on WKMG at 11 p.m. Saturday.)

“I have had multiple ‘off the record’ conversations with Casey, dating back to 2008 when I worked for Local 6,” Longo said in an email Saturday. “More on that will unfold as the week goes on,” he teased.

CNN’s Piers Morgan in June relayed comments from a phone conversation he had with Anthony.

“It’s my understanding from both Cheney Mason and Casey Anthony personally that the conversation with Piers Morgan was off the record, and she told me she was upset when she saw the program air where everything she said to him was paraphrased,” Longo said. “Based upon that, I felt comfortable saying this was the first time she authorized herself to be quoted for a news story.”

I asked Longo about getting the latest Anthony story.

Q. How long did you have with Anthony on the phone?

A. “I spoke to Anthony for less than five minutes. The majority of the conversation was off the record.”

Q. How many questions were you able to ask?

A. “It wasn’t an interrogation. I asked her a couple things about the bankruptcy and then made small talk. It had been made clear by her attorney she would not discuss anything to do with her active cases (including the criminal appeal). He, Chuck Greene, was adamant about that, and I respected that boundary.”

Q. How did she sound?

A. “She sounded eager to move on with her life. It’s clear that she has a fondness for her legal team, but at the same time she doesn’t want to be joined at the hip to them. She needs to be accessible to them constantly because of the multi-faceted legal problems she faces.”

Q. How quickly did this story come together?

A. “Attorney Charles Greene told me the process of getting this bankruptcy filing together took weeks. I wasn’t told about it until late Friday night.”

Q. Why do you think you were able to break the story?

A. “I think I’ve established a good rapport with all of the people involved in this story in some form or fashion, including with Casey Anthony herself. She and I have had multiple conversations over the years that helped to establish a trust and a mutual respect. I have been able to break multiple exclusive stories over the years because I stick to my word, and other sources trust me to quote them accurately and not break their confidentiality. There’s a lot of negativity directed toward the media in regards to this case, and that’s because certain ‘journalists’ have decided to make themselves the centerpiece of the story. Or they misrepresent someone’s intentions and actions. Or they break their word to sources who have trusted them. Attorneys and others, including Casey Anthony, know that I am completely objective, and I have no agenda other than presenting the facts in the most fair and straightforward manner.”

Q. Could you get the first televised interview with her?

A. “Who knows?”

The Florida woman who was infamously acquitted of killing her daughter, Caylee, has filed for bankruptcy in Florida. In the bankruptcy petition, she lists assets of $1,084 and debts of $792,119.23. She says she has no income – but she also lists no expenses for rent and utilities.

In a phone interview with Adam Longo, a reporter for CBS affiliate KPHO in Phoenix, Anthony says the move was necessary. "This is the next step towards closure for me," she said.

The bankruptcy will affect at least one of the civil cases against her. A woman named Zenaida Gonzalez claims that Anthony defamed her when she blamed her daughter's kidnapping on a woman with the same name. With the bankruptcy declaration, the case will shift to federal court.

"This most recent filing appears to be yet another calculated delay tactic," says Gonzalez's attorney, Matt Morgan."We are not deterred and will stay the course."

Anthony tells KPHO that she just wants the civil cases to go away. "These are the things holding me back," she said. "This is the key for me to move forward." She also released two pictures of herself taken in August 2012 with her legal team.

Anthony – one of the most reviled criminal defendants in recent memory – has been living in a condo in Cape Canaveral, Fla., since late last year. In addition to regular contact with her mother, she has also reconciled with her father, George, who she previously accused of molesting her. (The condo was actually leased by George Anthony for his daughter to live in. The family attorney, Mark Lippman, had no comment.)

Creditors of Anthony – including her lawyers, the police, and the IRS – have 30 days to file a claim against her, or her debts to them will be wiped clean.

That was a long time ago. Dr. Phil contributed a large sum of money that was suppose to go to fund something for missing children. I believe this. Have heard rumblings that ever since Dominic Casey was looking in the woods, the Anthony's finally knew the truth and hired him to try to find her body. What I don't get is: why didn't the prosecution get DC's cell records to see who he was talking to? I also hear (this is rumor) that they came up w/the plan that George would "take the fall" (the sexual abuse allegations and finding Caylee dead in the pool) to save their daughter from life in prison or the DP. That is why Cindy got on the stand and perjured herself saying SHE is the one that searched for chloroform.

Well shut my mouth. I really didn't believe George was paying for anything for her and/or that he had reconciled with her. Cindy yes, George no.
Well they took in $500K from that Dr Phil interview that was supposed to go to that so-called (not) non profit Caylee fund so I suppose that's how the money is funneled. She's still got a life of hell before her which makes me happy and when she meets her maker I don't think it's going to be good and that makes me happier.

Casey Anthony Trial - The Aftermath - Page 8 Empty Re: Casey Anthony Trial - The Aftermath

Post by Wrapitup Mon Jan 28, 2013 7:18 am

From what I am gathering, the entire "Dad sexually abused me and my daughter and my Dad found Caylee dead/drowned in the pool and helped me dump her in the woods" was a ruse so she wouldn't get the DP or LIPWOP. I think there is a good chance there may be something to this and George was "talked into" to save his daughter. He'd already lost his granddaughter and did not want to lose his only daughter. Maybe that is why he tried to take his life in Jan., about a month after Caylee's body was found. Cindy seems to run that household and him so at this point, I put nothing past the ScamAnthony's. We will never really know what happened but one thing I w/say. During trial, when asked on the stand if he sexually abused either Casey or Caylee, he looked down before replying "No." Many body language experts said he showed some form of "deceit". I do NOT think he EVER sexually abused either but knew this was all a ruse and had no choice but to play this game to keep his daughter out of prison for life, or worse. And, I DO think and have always thought that Dominic Casey was sent out to those woods by the Anthony's.That's who he was working for. I think they knew their granddaughter was buried out there somewhere. Would love to know how TMLS explained Caylee's death. My take is she told them she Did drown in the pool and freaked out. IIRC, there are records of several calls to her parents cell phones and work phones the early afternoon of 7/16/08 but neither of them picked up the phone.

This is all conjecture but if you think about it, it makes sense. And is my 2 cents

We could speculate all day and it's not going to get us anywhere. I could make up a dozen different plausible scenarios.....all believable. I'm so bored and so done with this woman and unless someone can prove whatever it is they're saying (gimme a video) I could care less at this point but I do hope everyone of her creditors jumps right in and stops this bankruptcy and makes her life a living hell! That's all we have....her in a living hell.

Casey Anthony Trial - The Aftermath - Page 8 Empty Casey Anthony May Become a Paralegal, Attorney Says

Post by Wrapitup Mon Jan 28, 2013 8:58 pm

By CHRISTINA NG (@ChristinaNg27)
Jan. 28, 2013

Casey Anthony has become so experienced with the legal system since her daughter disappeared in 2008 that she may be considering a job as a paralegal, her attorney said today.

Anthony, 26, has been unemployed for the past four years and recently filed bankruptcy. She's almost $800,000 in debt but has less than $1,100 worth of assets, according to her bankruptcy filing. When asked what she may be interested in doing, her attorney Charles Greene said she might want to be a paralegal.

"I truly believe that she has a lot of skills," Greene told ABCNews.com. "She's better than many paralegals I know. She could be a paralegal or something like that right away. She is very organized, a very intelligent, very computer savvy person, so I think her skills and her desire may lie somewhere in that field."

Greene said Anthony "believes strongly in our justice system" and constitutional rights.

"I think she may be the type that ends up trying to work within our system to make our system better rather than being a person who's trying to break it down," he said.

Anthony was acquitted of murdering her 2-year-old daughter in 2011, but she was convicted on four counts of providing false information to law enforcement, stemming from her initial statements to detectives. Two of the lying convictions were overturned on Friday.

But Greene said that it will be a while before she can take any kind of job, saying that life will "never be normal" for the woman who still breaks down in tears at times.

"You don't go from the most hated woman in the world, according to some media outlets, to being a normal person or being able to live a normal life," Greene said. "I'm not saying she's not a normal person, but people do not perceive her as a normal person."

Greene said that Anthony still receives threats and lives in hiding, despite the fact that both her prison time and probation have both been served.

She is the target of a number of civil lawsuits, which also prevents her from moving, Greene said.

He will not comment on Anthony's whereabouts, but her last known location was in Florida and it is likely she is still in the area, due to her ongoing legal matters.

"We think that once the lawsuits are over she'll be able to go where we think she is going to ultimately end up and then start about the process of getting a job," he said. "She's going to be 27 in March. She's still a young person and she's basically in a virtual prison based on her inability to move. So she would like to get a job, I can assure you, but she can't work at McDonald's. People would be looking at her instead of at the menu."

The few glimpses of Anthony since her July 2011 release from jail have been a few leaked video diaries and some unconfirmed sightings and photos of her in Florida.

Greene is adamant that Anthony has a story to tell, but that telling it right now is "not even under consideration except to say no."

"There will be no tell-all book, there is no tell-all movie," he said. "Her ability to progress and to grow up and to even be at her normal age was thwarted by what's happened to her in the last few years and what we believe happened to her in her earlier life, but that's her story to tell one day."

"The events are very private and Miss Anthony is still yet to come to terms with them and they're still so emotional, so emotionally traumatic for her," he said. "There's just moments she breaks down and starts crying when she starts thinking about it. It's nothing she's going to talk about. She's a very private person and she won't let people see that side of her either. She'll put up a tough face."

Anthony's bankruptcy filing includes 15 pages of people who have made claims, including legal consultants, media consultants, authorities, the IRS and Anthony's parents. The most sizeable claim is from Anthony's former defense attorney Jose Baez who is says she owes him $500,000.

The filing details Anthony's personal property, which includes some 10-year-old furniture at her family home, a laptop, some clothing, a pearl necklace, family photos, books, a sapphire and opal ring, two digital cameras and a bike. The total value of the items is just over $1,000.

Greene said that bankruptcy offers Anthony a fresh start and the ability to start with a clean slate, debt-free.

"She is the perfect candidate because she has more bills than she can pay and they continue to increase and she can't go on and start any sort of road to normality until she puts all this behind her," he said.

Greene said he receives letters weekly from people trying capitalize on Anthony and hopes that the filing will deter people by showing "there's not money to be had."

Casey Anthony Trial - The Aftermath - Page 8 Empty Casey Anthony spotted in Brevard County, with legal team

Post by Wrapitup Tue Jan 29, 2013 9:58 am

Posted: 9:50 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Details were released about what Casey Anthony has been doing since she was acquitted of killing her daughter, Caylee Anthony.

Reports show Anthony reconciled with her father, who has been paying for her to live in Cape Canaveral.
Anthony, 26, was photographed by a Phoenix television station with her legal team and reading a book on the beach.
Yet, there is NO picture.

Casey filed for bankruptcy on Friday.

Her attorney, Charles Greene, said she isn't looking to make money off of her story.
"It's not something that she's looking to capitalize on. This is still a very, very sad saga," said Greene. BS
Casey is also at the center of three civil lawsuits.
WFTV found out the bankruptcy filing would stall the lawsuits, and, a federal judge instead of a jury could decide if the suits are legitimate.

Casey Anthony's attorney talks with WDBO

By Jonathan Beaton

WDBO sat down with Casey Anthony's civil attorney and talked about her bankruptcy, death threats, an unexpected friendship and her future in the workforce.
"People are trying to collect hundreds of thousands of dollars from her, yet she has less than $1,000 dollars’ worth of assets," said Charles Green.
He tells WDBO that while the former mother doesn't have a job, he's confident she'll be able to find work once her legal woes are over, maybe even in law.
"She has the skills and now the legal knowledge, where I think she would make a great paralegal," adds Green.
As far as their relationship he considers Anthony to be a client and a friend.

"Our conversations range from her liking the Florida Gators to me liking the Florida Seminoles," said Green.
He also tells WDBO that since he’s taken the 26 year old woman on as a client, there’s been a constant flow of death threats.
“I will tell you we have very serious security precautions and somebody better think twice before coming after me.”

Casey Anthony Trial - The Aftermath - Page 8 Empty Re: Casey Anthony Trial - The Aftermath

Post by Wrapitup Tue Jan 29, 2013 10:19 am

Anthony attorney: Casey trapped in Central Fla.
ORLANDO, Fla. -
The civil attorney for Casey Anthony, who filed bankruptcy documents on Friday, told Local 6 on Monday that Anthony is trapped in Central Florida because of the lawsuits filed against her.

"Her ability to move is restricted by the lawsuits," said attorney Charles Greene. "She has to be accessible to me."

Recent photos obtained by Phoenix CBS affiliate KPHO show Anthony spending her time with her legal team and the occasional trip to the beach. Although it's not clear where Anthony is staying, People Magazine reported Anthony is at a condo in Cape Canaveral.

Local 6 spoke to some residents at the Ocean Woods Condominiums who said they have seen a woman resembling Anthony on the property.

"She walks a dog, she usually has a body guard with her," said Monica Vandevender. "My husband has seen her out here before too."

Although it's not confirmed Anthony is living in that Cape Canaveral condo, in Anthony's video diary, which surfaced in late 2011, Anthony said she adopted a dog.

Anthony hasn't been able to work since her July 2011 acquittal of the death of her daughter, and Greene says that by filing for bankruptcy, Anthony hopes she can move away and find a job.

"She's a virtual prisoner still by her circumstances," Greene said. "She can't work at McDonald's because people would be looking at her instead of the menu."

If a bankruptcy judge approves Anthony's claim, Anthony may still owe the IRS more than $68,000 in taxes for money she made selling her daughter's photos. But other debts, like the nearly $146,000 she owes the Orange County Sheriff's Office and the $500,000 she owes Attorney Jose Baez could be forgiven.

With the bankruptcy, all the lawsuits are immediately put on hold, including the defamation case filed by Zenaida Gonzalez, which was recently postponed.

"After it was continued, we sat back and said 'Can we take another year of this?'" Greene said.

Any plaintiff of an unresolved lawsuit who believes they should be eligible for money would need to put in a request with the bankruptcy court. If the bankruptcy court sides with the plaintiff, Greene believes the trial will be held in bankruptcy court, instead of state court where it was originally filed.

In addition to being sued by Gonzalez, Roy Kronk, the meter reader who found her daughter's body, and by Texas EquuSeach, which helped looked for Caylee Anthony are also suing Casey Anthony.

Gonzalez's attorney Matt Morgan says the bankruptcy filing won't stop him from seeking damages from Anthony for his client.

"We're going to get justice. We're going to have Casey Anthony held accountable and we're not gonna let her get off easy," Morgan said.

Morgan told Local 6 he believes he can convince the bankruptcy judge that their lawsuit should continue, even if the trial is held in bankruptcy court instead of state court.

"Casey Anthony does not want to talk us, but she will have to," he said. "And if she doesn't she'll be held in contempt of court."

Morgan also said he believes his client should get the proceeds from Anthony if she were to profit in the future.

Earlier this week, the 5th District Court of Appeal set aside two of the four convictions Casey Anthony faced for lying to detectives during the investigation into her missing 2-year-old daughter.

""She's a virtual prisoner still by her circumstances," Greene said. "She can't work at McDonald's because people would be looking at her instead of the menu."
She should consider herself lucky and it should have humbled her. But she seems to feel entitled and now wants the legal system to bow at her feet. Either way you look at it she killed Caylee and that is what counts instead of all this 'me, me, me' stuff she's doing'. I could go on and on but I'm over it. Caylee is dead and her Mother killed her and by the luck of the draw she got that idiot jury'. Karma is a bitch. MOO.

She could work in the back room flipping burgers where no one could see her. I've worked at many jobs where no the public couldn't see me. Gimme a break! She doesn't want to work ANYWHERE!

Trust me..you are NOT a "virtual prisoner" at Ocean Woods. It's a private beach and it's VERY nice there. They even have peacocks running around. Very serene, tennis courts, 2 pools..it's beautiful there.

I think even working flipping burgers the workers would not like her..and if word got out she was working at a certain place, it would be mass chaos. But, I agree. she does not want to work.

She owes the IRS a lot of money. They don't care about bankruptcy.

And, this thing about she was "at the river, not the beach.' The river is less than a mile away.

That's all we have....her in a living hell.

I hear you BJ. All we have is her living in hell. But I don't think she is. I think she enjoys her notoriety. The only person she cares about is herself. She is a sociopath/psychopath. It's all about her.

Wow. There is so much in this article I take issue with. If he thinks she is so great, then he should hire her. I hope he's ready for all her lies.

Casey Anthony: Craigslist post offers $50k on her whereabouts

THE CREDIT REPORT WITH BILL LEWIS
JANUARY 31, 2013

Craigslist scam or really a bounty on the whereabouts of Casey Anthony in her Ocean Woods gated community in Cape Canaveral, Florida?

A $50k reward was renewed to Craigslist late Wednesday in an effort to gain information on the acquitted murderess and now bankrupt Casey Anthony.

I am a national-media investigative reporter who lives in Cocoa Beach. Casey Anthony is living in the Ocean Woods gated community in Cape Canaveral. I am offering as much as $50,000 to anyone who can deliver the actual address to me -- or any sources who have been eyewitnesses to her whereabouts and/or activities here. I am particularly interested in eyewitness accounts of the incident that happened at the Sandbar restaurant recently. (The Sandbar restaurant is in Cocoa Beach, directly on the beach. You can sit inside or outside. It's really nice, layed back, full bar, bands, great food) ~wrap~
I will also pay $$$ to anyone who can lead me to actual sources who have real information -- and will pay them as well. THIS IS A SERIOUS OFFER.
Quite the busy news week for Casey Anthony. She not only won her appeal before a Florida appellate court, filed bankruptcy to discharge almost $800,000 in debt, is said to be considering a new career as a paralegal, but was photographed on a central Florida Beach.

"She'll be dogged and tortured the rest of her life by her own unrelenting conscience and by an unforgiving and merciless society that will always reject and ostracize her," Fort Lauderdale criminal defense attorney John Contini, author of several real-life crime dramas including Danger Road and Feeling the Heat, told this Examiner. "No need to dog her and pile on, as she'll suffer enough under all that self condemnation and public rejection."

Since its inception, Craigslist has become one of the most popular websites in history. While not as big as E-Bay, they do have twice the page views of Amazon.com.

As Craigslist does not verify or certify listings, they have become a favorite landing place for scam artists. In a buyer-beware and seller-beware market, it is highly doubtful that the $50k reward on Casey Anthony's current location is legitimate.

"The justice system has spoken and Casey Anthony has been acquitted," stated Fort Lauderdale criminal defense attorney and Fox/CNN legal contributor Eric Schwartzreich. "It's time to allow Ms. Anthony to live in peace."

Craigslist scam or hoax? Maybe the now bankrupt Anthony can claim her own reward and use it to pay her creditors.

"Let's face it, none of us know the real truth - only God knows who really did what and while we're busy being judgmental, Christ said it best: 'Let he who is without sin cast the first stone," concluded Contini.
