FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Prosecutors and attorneys for a Fort Wayne man accused of bludgeoning a 9-year-old girl to death and dismembering her body three days before Christmas have told a judge they’re ready to go to trial next month.

The News-Sentinel reports (http://bit.ly/JEdxUG ) the attorneys said during a brief pretrial conference Tuesday morning in an Allen County court that they’re ready to proceed.

Thirty-nine-year old Michael Plumadore is charged with murder, abuse of a corpse and removing a dead body from the scene in the December death of Aliahna Maroney-Lemmon. Authorities say Plumadore fatally beat Aliahna with a brick.

Plumadore was a family friend who was caring for the third-grader because her mother was sick

The trial is scheduled to begin on June 18.

Suspect in killing of 9-year-old neighbor Aliahna

Rebecca S. Green | The Journal Gazette

FORT WAYNE – Michael L. Plumadore appeared for a brief hearing Tuesday morning as his murder case proceeds through the court system.

Plumadore, 39, is accused of killing 9-year-old Aliahna Lemmon and dismembering her body days before Christmas at the north side mobile home park where they both lived.

Like at four previous hearings, Plumadore said nothing unless asked a question directly, his eyes staring down at the table, hands cuffed and chained in his lap. His hair, long at the time of his arrest and shaved sometime afterward in the jail, is growing back but reveals a jagged scar near the top of his head.

Before Tuesday’s hearing began, Plumadore’s court-appointed attorneys, Anthony Churchward and Mark Thoma, talked to Allen Superior Court Judge John Surbeck at the bench while Allen County Deputy Prosecutor Stacey Speith waited to call the case.

Moments after the hearing started, Plumadore’s attorneys said they were ready for the five-day trial set to begin June 18. But that date could change if Allen County Prosecutor Karen Richards decides to seek the death penalty against Plumadore, who is charged with murder, abuse of a corpse and altering the scene of a death. Richards declined to comment Tuesday afternoon.

Aliahna’s mother told police she last saw her daughter Dec. 20. Plumadore said he saw her last the morning of Dec. 23.

Police, firefighters and others searched for days, and Dec. 26, Plumadore admitted he killed her Dec. 22. He said he bashed her repeatedly in the head with a brick while she stood on the stoop outside his mobile home, according to court records.

Police found the little girl’s dismembered body in trash bags, discarded in a trash bin at a nearby business, while her head, hands and feet were found in the freezer inside Plumadore’s mobile home.

Another pre-trial conference is scheduled for this month.

A man who confessed to bludgeoning a nine-year-old girl to death then dismembering her body three days before Christmas pleaded guilty today after prosecutors said they would ask for the death penalty.

Michael Plumadore, 39, from Indiana, also pleaded guilty to abuse of a corpse and removing a dead body from the scene in Aliahna Maroney-Lemmon's December 22 death at a Fort Wayne trailer park. He'll be sentenced June 18 to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Plumadore's attorneys and prosecutors had told the judge last week they were ready for his trial to start that day. But defense attorney Anthony Churchward said today that they agreed to the guilty pleas after prosecutors indicated they would pursue the death penalty if Plumadore was convicted by trial.

Plumadore was looking after Aliahna and her six-year-old sister because their mother was sick. He was a trusted family friend who had looked after Aliahna's dying grandfather at the trailer park where the family lived.

The grandfather - who died three weeks before the girl's death - was a convicted sex offender. The family moved to the trailer park - where 15 sex offenders lived - to take care of him in his final days.

Plumadore told police he repeatedly hit Aliahna in the head with a brick, chopped up her body with a hack saw, stashed her head, hands and feet in the trailer where he lived and dumped the rest of her remains nearby.

She weighed only 41 pounds when she died. The other girls weren't harmed.

Plumadore has previously been convicted of trespassing, assault and forgery in three different states and there had been a warrant out for his arrest 11 years before the murder. He was charged with battery of a first-responder in 2000 and was given felony probation.
But he failed to report to his probation officer, fulfill his community service hours or complete an anger management course. Plumadore was reported an absconder in June 2000.

Greg Shumaker, one of 15 convicted sex offenders who lives at the park, recalled Aliahna's family moving to the trailer park to help take care of 66-year-old James E 'Shorty' Lemmon.

Mr Shumaker said he introduced Plumadore to Mr Lemmon shortly after Plumadore moved into the trailer park, and Plumadore moved in with Mr Lemmon a few days later.

Mr Shumaker said he knew Mr Lemmon because they were both sex offenders and were in jail together. Plumadore is not a registered sex offender in Indiana.

But Mr Lemmon had assured Ms Souders that there was nothing to worry about, Mr Shumaker said.

Paulette Hair, 45, a former manager at the trailer park who lives at a nearby trailer park, said she also knew Mr Lemmon was a sex offender. 'He stayed out of everybody's way,' she said.

Mr Shumaker said Plumadore briefly moved away, but returned when Ms Souders, 28, asked him to care for her father.

Aliahna's father, Dawayne Maroney of Centerville, Iowa, said he knew Plumadore through Ms Souders and had no reason to distrust him.

'I can't talk about it because I'm still coping with it. It's too hard to talk about,' he said. 'I had no reason to suspect anything.'

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- An Indiana man pleaded guilty Friday to bludgeoning a 9-year-old girl to death before dismembering her body, calmly describing the details of his crimes to a judge while the girl's parents and others watched in a hushed courtroom.

Michael Plumadore also pleaded guilty to abuse of a corpse and removing a dead body from the scene in the Dec. 22 death of Aliahna Maroney-Lemmon at a Fort Wayne trailer park. He'll be sentenced June 18 to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Plumadore's attorneys and prosecutors had told the judge last week they were ready for his trial. But defense attorney Anthony Churchward told the judge Friday that they agreed to the guilty pleas after prosecutors indicated they would ask for the death penalty if Plumadore was convicted.

Plumadore, whom relatives described as a trusted family friend who helped care for Aliahna's dying grandfather at the trailer park, where the family lived, had been looking after the girl and her 6-year-old sisters because their mother was sick. Authorities said Aliahna had been dead for more than 24 hours before she was reported missing two days before Christmas. The other girls weren't harmed.

When asked Friday by Allen Superior Court John Surbeck what he had done, Plumadore responded that he "repeatedly struck Aliahna in the head with a brick" and that she died as a result.

Responding to the charge of abuse of a corpse, Plumadore said, "I cut Aliahna up with a hacksaw."

Surbeck asked what happened next.

"I put parts in my freezer and took the rest down to the Marathon station and put them in a Dumpster," Plumadore said.

Assistant Prosecutor Steve Godfrey asked if those actions were intended to hamper any investigation, and Plumadore replied simply: "Yes, sir."

Aliahna's mother and stepfather sat in the front row with eight other family members and friends. Two women sat behind Aliahna's mother, Tarah Souders, with their hands on her shoulders for much of the 45-minute hearing.

Godfrey declined to comment after the hearing, and the family didn't speak to reporters.

Aliahna's stepgrandfather, David Story, told The Associated Press from Jacksonville, Fla., that he was pleased.

"A needle in the arm is too humane for him," Story said. "I'm glad there's finally some justice for her. In the end, it will never end. But it does give me some peace of mind."

Aliahna’s murderer admits guilt
Plumadore’s plea deal means life with no parole

Rebecca S. Green | The Journal Gazette
FORT WAYNE – His words offered nothing new Friday in Allen Superior Court, but for the first time in open court Michael Len Plumadore said he killed and then chopped up a little girl and threw the pieces away like trash.

He also pleaded guilty to murdering his 9-year-old neighbor, Aliahna Maroney Lemmon, in the days leading up to Christmas.

“I repeatedly struck her in the head with a brick,” he told Allen Superior Court Judge John Surbeck. “She died. … I cut Aliahna Lemmon up with a hacksaw and put the parts in a freezer. I then took the rest down to the Marathon station and put them in a Dumpster.”

And with that, Plumadore, 39, committed himself to a life in prison without the possibility of parole, escaping the death penalty and preventing the community from hearing an expanded version of the gory details in a lengthy trial that had been scheduled for June.

With those admissions – to crimes of murder, abuse of a corpse, removing a body from the scene of a violent or suspicious death and to being a habitual offender – Plumadore brought the case of missing and then-murdered Aliahna to a near-end.

There will be a sentencing, tentatively scheduled for June 18, but what he faces is not a mystery because Allen County Prosecutor Karen Richards agreed not to seek Plumadore’s execution if he agrees to spend the rest of his natural life behind bars in the Indiana Department of Correction.

After she was reported missing just days before Christmas, Aliahna’s case drew national attention as local police, firefighters and other emergency workers searched on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, looking for the little girl who supposedly wandered out of a mobile home wearing a silver and white dress.

That’s what Plumadore told the police then – he said he was the last to see her alive. Maybe she’d sleepwalked away from his trailer, he said. He was caring for her and her two sisters while their mother recovered from the flu. She told police she hadn’t seen Aliahna since Dec. 20.

Emergency workers and volunteers looked everywhere around the Northway mobile home park. They used dogs and manpower; on foot, in boats and cars and in aircraft.

They found nothing. But on Dec. 26, when they brought him in for another interview, Plumadore told them what he did. Police found pieces of her 41-pound body in trash bags in a trash bin at a gas station a mile from her home. Her head, hands and feet were stashed in Plumadore’s freezer.

He told the sad story again Friday as Aliahna’s mother sat a few feet away, surrounded by family and friends.

“I put the parts of the body in the Dumpster down the street and I put the rest in my freezer,” Plumadore said.

Steve Godfrey, Allen County deputy prosecutor and chief criminal counsel, asked Plumadore whether he dismembered the body to hinder the criminal investigation.

“Yes, sir,” Plumadore said, a hint of a Southern accent in his voice.

Friday’s hearing seemed hastily called, not on the regular court schedule until later in the week and days before another hearing was scheduled. Whether he would plead guilty or Richards was filing a motion to seek the death penalty was unclear until the hearing began.

There were signs, though, that a guilty plea was in the works. As Plumadore sat next to one of his court-appointed attorneys, Mark Thoma, his other court-appointed attorney, Anthony Churchward, had him signing multiple pieces of paper. Churchward then disappeared into the hallway, and Thoma and Plumadore began to talk.

Aliahna’s family was also present. Most of them, including her mother, had not been present at the majority of Plumadore’s court appearances until Friday.

As the hearing began, Surbeck asked Plumadore whether it was his intention to plead guilty.

“Yes, sir,” he said.

As part of the plea agreement, Plumadore admitted to being a habitual offender – having committed two prior felonies, one in Florida and a forgery in Allen County in 2007.

After the hearing, Aliahna’s family was escorted out of the courtroom through the judicial doors by officers with the Allen County Sheriff’s Department, away from the assembled media in the gallery.

Richards and Plumadore’s attorneys declined to comment until the case is concluded.

I am GLAD he plead Guilty. There was No Way he would have been found innocent. And, he is young so to know he w/spend the rest of his miserable life in prison is IMHO far worse than the needle. That's too easy. Also, by him pleading Guilty, there will be no expense on a trial. I pray Aliahna was knocked out the first time he hit that poor baby w/a brick and she didn't suffer. And, I Still say..what the Hell is Wrong with this family that they would Allow this perv to "take care" of her? Especially during Christmas? I don't care HOW sick the mother was. There is NO excuse for this!! angry

A Fort Wayne man faces being sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for bludgeoning a 9-year-old girl to death before dismembering her body.

Michael Plumadore pleaded guilty last month to murder and other charges for the Dec. 22 death of Aliahna Maroney-Lemmon at a Fort Wayne trailer park.

He'll be sentenced to life in prison if a judge accepts his plea agreement during a court hearing Monday afternoon.

Prosecutors agreed to drop their bid for the death penalty in exchange for the guilty plea.

Aliahna's relatives described the 39-year-old Plumadore as a trusted family friend who had helped care for the girl's dying grandfather. He was looking after Aliahna and her 6-year-old sisters because their mother was sick. The other girls weren't harmed.

I hope the mother is in court. To this day, it is Her fault for allowing this psycho to not only watch her daughter but allow her to spend the night with him, and on Christmas? I wouldn't care what my physical condition was. No way would any of us spend Christmas w/out our child. She makes me sick!!

Rebecca S. Green | The Journal Gazette
Michael Len Plumadore will spend the rest of his life in prison.

On Monday afternoon, Allen Superior Judge John Surbeck accepted Plumadore’s guilty plea to charges of murder, abuse of a corpse, removing the body from a scene of a violent or suspicious death, and being a habitual offender.

In May, Plumadore, 39, admitted to killing 9-year-old Aliahna Lemmon, for whom he was babysitting, and dismembering the body. In exchange for his guilty plea, Allen County Prosecutor Karen Richards did not seek the death penalty against Plumadore and asked for a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The sentencing brings to an end a grisly case which drew national attention to Fort Wayne around the holidays as emergency crews searched for Aliahna, whose mother reported her missing on Dec. 23.

While Aliahna’s mother recovered from the flu, she left Aliahna and her sisters in the care of Plumadore, a trusted family friend and neighbor who lived in the same mobile home park off North Clinton.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. June 18, 2012 (AP)
A Fort Wayne man was sentenced to life in prison Monday for bludgeoning to death and dismembering a 9-year-old girl he was baby-sitting just days before Christmas.

Michael Plumadore last month pleaded guilty to murder, abuse of a corpse and removing a dead body from the scene in the Dec. 22 death of Aliahna Maroney-Lemmon. Prosecutors initially called for the death penalty but agreed to life in prison without the possibility of parole in exchange for the guilty plea.

On Monday, a judge accepted that plea deal and added a further 36 years to the sentence: three more years for abuse of a corpse; three years for moving her body; and 30 years more for the murder charge because Plumadore is a habitual offender.

The day Aliahna died, Plumadore was ostensibly looking after the third-grader and her 6-year-old sisters at his mobile home because their mother was sick. Aliahna's family and Plumadore lived in the same trailer park in Fort Wayne. Aliahna's relatives described the 39-year-old man as a trusted family friend who had helped care for the girl's dying grandfather.

Police found the girl's head, hands and feet in the freezer at the mobile home where Plumadore had lived with Aliahna's grandfather, who had died about three weeks earlier. The other remains were thrown into trash bags and discarded at a gas station.

The other girls weren't harmed.

At last month's hearing, Plumadore told the judge he killed Aliahna by repeatedly striking her in the head with a brick, then he cut her up with a hacksaw.

"I put parts in my freezer and took the rest down to the Marathon station and put them in a Dumpster," he said.

Plumadore has criminal records in Florida and North Carolina including convictions for trespassing and assault, and an Indiana conviction for forgery.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — An Indiana man who admitted to fatally bludgeoning and dismembering a 9-year-old girl he was baby-sitting just days before Christmas was sentenced Monday to life in prison.

Michael Plumadore last month pleaded guilty to murder, abuse of a corpse and removing a dead body from the scene in the Dec. 22 death of Aliahna Maroney-Lemmon. Prosecutors had considered the death penalty but agreed to life in prison without the possibility of parole in exchange for the guilty plea.

Calling the case the "worst of the worst," Allen Superior Court Judge Allen Surbeck accepted that plea deal Monday and added an extra 36 years: three more years for abuse of a corpse; three years for moving her body; and 30 years for the murder charge because Plumadore is a habitual offender.

Plumadore, who wore shackles and an orange-and-tan striped jumpsuit, expressed remorse for the girl's death during the hearing.

"I am sorry for the pain and sorrow I caused so many people. ... I'm truly sorry for the crime I committed and the pain I caused," Plumadore said. "No one should be exposed to the things I have done."

Plumadore met Aliahna after her mother, Tarah Souders, moved her three daughters to the rundown trailer park where he lived to help take care of her dying father. The park, which holds about two dozen homes, was teeming with convicted sex offenders, and neighbors say Souders asked her father if any of them — including Plumadore — could be a threat to her children.

Her father assured her the children would be safe.

The day Aliahna died, Plumadore was looking after the third-grader and her 6-year-old sisters at his mobile home because Souders was ill.

At last month's hearing, Plumadore told the judge he killed Aliahna by repeatedly striking her in the head with a brick. He said he then he cut her body up with a hacksaw.

"I put parts in my freezer and took the rest down to the Marathon station and put them in a Dumpster," he said.

Police found the girl's head, hands and feet in the freezer at the mobile home where Plumadore had lived with Aliahna's grandfather, who had died about three weeks earlier. The other remains were thrown into trash bags and discarded at a gas station.

The other girls weren't harmed.

Aliahna's death drew scrutiny to her mother's decision to move to the trailer park and leave the girl in Plumadore's care.

Elizabeth Sepponen, a spokeswoman for the family, told Plumadore at the hearing that the family suffered not just the pain of the murder, but the judgment of the community.

"My cousin Tarah will forever be judged," she said. "You have put a rift in Fort Wayne that I hope someday can be healed."

Surbeck said the death penalty would have been justified because of the dismemberment and the victim's age, as well as Plumadore's criminal history. Since 1992, Plumadore has criminal records in Florida and North Carolina, including convictions for trespassing and assault, and an Indiana conviction for forgery.

"Any time you have a case where your client could face the death penalty, the goal is to save his life," said Plumadore's attorney, Anthony Churchward.

Prosecutor Karen Richards said Aliahna's family asked her not to seek the death penalty. She said she thought they needed finality.

"I can't think of a more horrific crime I've seen involving a more innocent victim. I think it transcends our entire community," she said.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Yep, Tarah will forever be judged. More to the point, Tarah will forever be blamed for Allowing her innocent young daughters to be exposed to this madman.

I would like to know how she can sleep at night. How could she have let those girls stay with that degenerate for days on end w/out checking on them? How sick was she? Was she on drugs? Flu, my ass!!

This case makes me Livid! And, I would also like to know why Plumadore did this. WHY? What was his motive? Sex? Did Aliahna put up a fight? Is that why he killed her? And why did he NOT hurt the other sister's? I don't understand and I wish he would have given some explanation as to Why he did this. And, to chop her up and distribute her remains all over the place is Exactly what Zahra Baker's stepmother did and would bet that is where he got the idea.

I hope someone takes him out in prison just like he took out that poor little girl! He does not deserve to live.

Prison is too good for that POS. I hope word gets out fast in the prison about the crime he committed, he won't last long after it does, the inmates will take care of him.
I wonder where that POS Mother was? Did she just send a 'family spoke-person' or was she there? Yeah, she'll be forever judged and she should be for allowing her daughters to stay day and night with that POS SO. She does not deserve to keep her other daughter.

Drew Blair
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - The family of a young murder victim has expressed concerned over what it calls an inappropriate use of the deceased’s name and picture.

Tarah Souders, mother of Aliahna Lemmon, said her daughter’s identity has been misrepresented on various profiles and pages on Facebook.

Several pages were created shortly after the nine-year-old was murdered in December 2011.

A profile with the name “Aliahna Lemmon-rip” was active starting Monday. The name was later changed to “Katty Brown.” The profile listed WANE-TV, NewsChannel 15 as an employer which was a false claim. Requests were made to the user(s) to remove that information.

The user(s) behind the page had also posted information about a fabricated event said to be scheduled for Friday in honor of Aliahna in downtown Fort Wayne.

Below are posts copied from the profile which has since been deleted.

Monday: aliahna lemmon memory's on friday at 9am to 9pm all is welcome and who can't make god bless you parking is 2.00 for 4 people 4.00 for 8 people 6.00 for 12 people wayne st and barry st and clay st will be close just for aliahan lemmon wane tv 15 be there nancy grace and more tv people just for little girl

Tuesday: namcy grece friday night live with country music stars faith hill and jo dee messina and lee ann womack and shania twain sing for aliahna lemmon

Souders said she has given permission to only one individual to use Aliahna’s name for specified purposes such as fundraisers, etc. The individual is associated with the group titled "Wings of Innocence - In Memory of Aliahna Lemmon." The permission was granted through a notarized document.

I am dumbfounded! Who CARES if the media or whoever fabricated events said to be scheduled for Friday in honor of Aliahna??? That would be the LAST thing on my mind. OMG!! Plumadore, the mother's 'dear friend' Sarcasm was just sentenced to life plus eternity for killing and dismembering her daughter at Christmas while she 'had the flu'. And, she's focusing on her daughters name being in the media?

Hey, Souders the egg donor, try this on for size: The general public cares more about your daughter than you. And, her name is Aliahna Lemmon!!

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – An Indiana man who admitted to fatally bludgeoning and dismembering a 9-year-old girl he was baby-sitting just days before Christmas was sentenced Monday to life in prison.

"I can't think of a more horrific crime I've seen involving a more innocent victim. I think it transcends our entire community," she said.
There are two others that come to mind. Zahra and Jaren. But, at least Jaren had some semblance of a life. Zahra had nothing..no peace..and was beating cancer.

I know I harp on this particular case, but this is the mother's fault for allowing not only her daughters to walk through Plumadore's door but allowing them to SPEND THE NIGHT(S)!!!

It's been one year since Aliahna Lemmon's life was tragically taken.

Tonight community members gathered at the Fort Wayne elementary school she attended to honor her life.

A local group dedicated to keeping Aliahna Lemmon's legacy alive organized a vigil to remember and celebrate her life.

"I didn't know her family but it's important to keep the awareness going so this doesn't happen to other children," said Tina Cavanaugh, a member of wings of innocence.

Nine-year-old Aliahna Lemmon was murdered one-year ago by Michael Plumadore who was supposed to be babysitting.

For many, the vigil brought back the horrific details from a year ago.

"It was just heart wrenching because we all held on to hope and there was no hope to be held on to. It sickens me to know that somebody could harm a child," said Cavanaugh.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP/WANE) -- The Northway trailer park where 9-year-old Aliahana Lemmon was slain and dismembered is now home to more convicted sex offenders than it was when she died just a few days before Christmas last year, state records show.

The online state sex offender registry currently lists 17 sex offenders living on lots at the address of the trailer park where Aliahna Maroney-Lemmon was killed Dec. 22, 2011 , compared with 15 who lived there at the time.

The development's popularity among sex offenders is apparently due to its location far outside the 1,000 feet offenders are required by law to live from any school, day care or public park.

The park's owners didn't return a phone call from The Associated Press seeking comment Sunday.

Michael Plumadore was sentenced to life in prison in June after he pleaded guilty to murder, abuse of a corpse and removing a dead body from the scene. Prosecutors had considered the death penalty but agreed to life in prison without the possibility of parole in exchange for the guilty plea.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Plumadore told police that he repeatedly hit Aliahna in the head with a brick, then used a hacksaw to dismember her body , hid part of her remains inside of his freeze in the trailer where he lived and dumped her other remains nearby.

Relatives said they had considered Plumadore, who was not a convicted sex offender, to be a trusted family friend.

At the time of Aliahna's death, the Northway mobile home park became a focus of public criticism for being home to a seemingly large number of registered sex offenders, although none of them were accused in her killing.

The owners tried unsuccessfully to sell the park earlier this year and have since changed its name to Dupont Triangle, The Journal Gazette reported.

A woman whose granddaughter was friends with Aliahna helped organize a group called Wings of Innocence, which held a candlelight vigil in the girl's honor Saturday night.

Karen Hughes told the newspaper that the group is seeking a law strengthening penalties for child abuse in Indiana.

Probably because of the below, most likely it's legal.

Yea, I know. So, they put them all together. I get that. There should be a law that there are no children allowed to live in this trailer park. I am certain this is just not in Indiana. 🇳🇴
