Travis Alexander Arrest Record Questioned; Police Checking If Brother Was Actually In Custody

Authorities in California are scrambling to determine who they actually had in custody following a theft and battery arrest that court documents attribute to Travis Alexander, the ex-boyfriend Jodi Arias is charged with murdering.

On Monday, The Huffington Post reported that Alexander's record shows a previously undisclosed conviction for fighting with a security guard and shoplifting in Riverside in 2002. But his brother Dennis Alexander immediately claimed that he was the actual culprit.

"We're glad [The Huffington Post] brought it to our attention. We're trying to verify if that's him or not," deputy Alberto Martinez, of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, told HuffPost Tuesday afternoon.

Martinez provided HuffPost with a mug shot taken in connection with the theft and battery case. Like Riverside County court records, the police department's files attribute the arrest to Travis Alexander, said the deputy.

The booking photo (seen above this article next to a photo of Travis Alexander) resembles other pictures of the victim. But the sheriff's department is taking seriously the claims that Dennis Alexander committed the crimes and used his brother's name when he was caught.

Police are comparing the fingerprint records from the arrest in question with prints on file from Dennis Alexander's other arrests. The department hopes to complete the verification process this afternoon or evening, Martinez said.

The outcome could affect the public image of Travis Alexander. Arias' defense team throughout the trial has tried to portray him as an abusive boyfriend. If Riverside police determine his brother was arrested in the theft case, it could restore Travis Alexander's reputation as a man without a violent past.

Travis Alexander was killed on June 4, 2008. His ex-girlfriend, Jodi Arias, is being tried for first-degree murder in the case. Prosecutors allege Arias that in a jealous rage shot Alexander in the head, stabbed him 27 times and cut his throat from ear to ear in his Mesa, Ariz., home. Arias claims the killing was self-defense. She could face the death penalty if convicted.

According to court documents obtained by The Huffington Post, Travis Alexander was convicted of a 2002 theft and misdemeanor battery.

Alexander's brother said Monday that the records are incorrect.

Dennis Gregory Alexander, told HuffPost that he committed the crime and falsely identified himself to arresting police officers as Travis Alexander, then later passed himself off in court as his brother.

"That was a time in my life when I was addicted to drugs and was a real mess," Dennis Alexander said. "I was stealing Sudafed, an ingredient in manufacturing methamphetamines … It's something that I am ashamed of. I have been clean for almost 10 years and it's something Travis forgave me for a long time ago."

Dennis Alexander said the incident detailed in court documents took place in March 2002, at a store in Riverside, Calif. He said he was attempting to leave the store with drugs when he was confronted by a security guard.

"They tackled me and beat me up pretty good," he said. "I was already on parole and would have went to prison, so I used Travis' name and information. When they arrested me, they fingerprinted me, and put it in the computer and found out who I was. They sent me to prison for a parole violation."

Martinez said Dennis Alexander has a prior arrest record with the sheriff's department and officials there have compared the mug shot attributed to Travis Alexander to one on file for Dennis Alexander.

"Comparing [the photo attributed to Travis Alexander] to the person we booked under Dennis, it does look like it could be Dennis," Martinez said. "There’s a good chance that Dennis used Travis' information and that's the way he was booked, under Travis' name.

"We are doing checking the fingerprints to make sure if we had same person or different people," Martinez said. "We do have two people who are booked -- Dennis Gregory Alexander and then Travis Alexander, so we sent it to our records people [and asked them] to do it as soon as possible."

I seem to remember at some point, maybe pre-trial I don't know, but at a much earlier point Jody said that after Travis was shot in the face (by the 2 ninjas) she said Travis said something like "I can't feel my face" or "my face is numb". I have never heard it played on any TV show other than the first time I allegedly saw it on TV.

Does anyone else remember this happening???? If no, I will chalk it up to having dreams about this case.

Authorities in California have confirmed Travis Alexander, the man Jodi Arias is charged with murdering, was the victim of an identity theft that resulted in a mistaken criminal record.

"We were able to confirm via fingerprints that the person in [the police report] is not Travis. It is Dennis Alexander ... [The] booking photo is of Dennis, using Travis' name," Sgt. Lisa McConnell, of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, told The Huffington Post Tuesday evening.

On Monday, HuffPost reported that court documents in Travis Alexander's name show an arrest and conviction for fighting with a security guard and shoplifting in Riverside, Calif., in 2002. Arias supporters had also obtained copies of the court documents and were posting the information online, in an apparent attempt to show that Alexander was prone to violent outbursts, as Arias alleged in court earlier this month.

Contacted by HuffPost, Dennis Alexander, Travis's brother, did not hesitate to take responsibility for the arrest. He told HuffPost that he committed the crime and falsely identified himself to arresting police officers as Travis Alexander, then later passed himself off in court as his brother.

The sheriff's department took Dennis Alexander's claims seriously and worked diligently Tuesday to determine whether he was telling the truth. After comparing photos of Dennis Alexander to the booking photo for the 2002 arrest, authorities ordered the comparison of fingerprint records from the arrest in question with prints on file from Dennis Alexander's other arrests. The department completed the verification process Tuesday evening.

"[Travis] has never been arrested in Riverside County," Deputy Alberto Martinez, of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, told HuffPost when he received the results.

McConnell released a copy of the original mug shot and police report Tuesday evening. A spokesperson for Travis Alexander's family told HuffPost they are happy the issue has been resolved.

They still think it was Travis even though LE compared fingerprints and cleared Travis' name regarding that arrest. There are some there who are actually taking credit for HLN toning down the coverage on the trial. OH REALLY? HLN has a new show with Vinnie coming on at night designed to cover the trial.

I too believe that Jodi deserves to be fairly judged by a jury of her peers. She has repetitively lied to everyone concerning Travis' murder, including the Jurors. She's been slandering him from the beginning with no proof of her accusations against him. The people posting at your site say you're all about the truth and facts, yet there are none to back up your theories about her crime. You're basing your opinions on the words of a pathological liar.
You may choose to believe her and it is your right to do so, just as it is my choice not to. You are all entitled to your opinions about her innocence just as I am entitled to mine... that she is guilty.

You views definitely reflect my opinions Nite! Jodi is guilty as sin and her lies will catch up to her, in fact with the jurors I think they already have. She does deserve to have a fair trial just as much as Travis deserves to have the truth told about him, whatever that may be. Obviously the criminal record has been ruled out. Jodi has been on the stand more days than I can count, she's had the stage all to herself and there's just no way she can later say she wasn't allowed to tell her side of it.

How will Jodi Arias fare during day two of questioning by the jury?

Jodi Arias will take the witness stand for her 18th day of testimony Wednesday, following a five day hiatus in her first-degree murder trial.

Prosecutor Juan Martinez is expected to re-interrogate Arias about the more than 100 questions that were presented to her by the jury last week. Arizona is one of three states that allow jurors to pose questions to witnesses.

Arias, 32, is accused of the June 4, 2008, slaying of Travis Alexander inside his Mesa, Ariz., apartment. The prosecution contends Arias stabbed Alexander 27 times, shot him twice in the face and slashed his throat in a jealous rage. Arias told jurors she killed her ex-boyfriend in self-defense during an argument over a dropped camera that followed his escalating sexual demands.

The questions presented to the defendant by the jury covered subjects that included her sex life and the murder. Martinez now gets to follow-up on Arias answers to those questions.

Arias has presented many faces throughout previous questing by Martinez. Will she, as she has been in the past, appear combative with the veteran prosecutor, or will she again play the role of victim and appear meek on the witness stand?
